So, I'm going through every link I can find, trying to find Sebastian
Bach's web page, because I apparently never bookmarked it. (Can anyone
help me out, btw?) And as I'm going from page to page, I'm seeing a lot
of pages that purport to have famous musicians' e-mail addresses. How
people would collect this knowledge, I don't know. Then I saw Carl
    Cadden-James' e-mail address (whether it's right or not, I don't know),
and I figured, well, at least the designer of this page has taste. So,
I'm scrolling down, and what do I see, but an e-mail address for none
other than Mike Portnoy. Wow, I think, I didn't know the general world
knew his address. Then I look at what the address actually is:
    durnik@indirect.com.

Wrong address, *and* wrong Mike. I hope Mr. Bahr isn't getting a lot of
    mail because of this. :)

FW first: new album in June: does it contain anything BESIDES the 21
minute track, or are they pulling a black aria on us??

    About the blurb below....
"Attracted to guitar while watching a neighborhood band in action
and inspiried by Iron Madien, Black Sabbath, Rush, and Yes, and later
Steve Vai, AL DIMEOLA, and Allen Holdsworth, Dream Theater's
    JP taught himself to play......"

that DiMeola guy is a freakin' GOD.....saw him play the other night, a
show with him, Paco De Lucia and John McGloughlin.....beyond my meager
vocabulary to describe how awesome a show that was.....from seats sorta
high in the Michigan Theater, sometimes I couldn't distinguish fingers,
those three were moving 'em so fast....McGlouglin's strum hand looked like
some wicked protoplasm most of the night, he was shaking it quite
quickly (the others' hands' prolly looked the same at another angle)

I really liked how they played the show....first, each of them came out
and did a solo piece, then, they did duets (paco and al, al and john, paco
and john).....about 1:10 for that.....after intermission, they came out
and did trios for another hour plus.....

Now, I had deliberately held myself back from getting a preview of these
guys, and my impressions were that I like DiMeola best, De Lucia second
and McGlaughlin third--but it may have been because of the
arrangements of the pieces played).....if any McGloughlin fans would like
to argue, please send yer recommendations to ahtrap@umich.edu

    p.s.: i'm back.....anyone care? :)

My thoughts: First: Brian (?), excellent job of your group putting this thing together! It was probably quite monsterour, but well worth it!!!! quick HI: IMO, Tony MacAlpine stole the show! He was the only person besides the headliners (Van Halen, Sheeahan, Torpey, Lukather) to get the crowd to pump fists, cheer during songs and scream for MORE! He was awesome and just performed with class! The best there was! Billy Sheehan was killer! quik lows: - Time between acts.....sometime no interlude music (makes the wait seem longer).....my back started hurting by hour 6 of being on my feet in one spot....Van Halen fans who were so fucking rude to constantly call "Eddie!" while other acts were on stage---classless buttholes....other stuff, maybe. Bottom line was it was worth the money and really pulled on the heart strings when video of Jason wa shown. If you can learn anything about ALS and support the fight (or at least ANY fight), do so. I think this benefit was outstanding! STeve

    Comments, mostly about guitarists:

Bafu nailed it where Eric Johnson is concerned. EJ is phenomenal not because he does everything, but because the man never runs out of ideas. Stylistically, he's more flexible than he's being given credit for here, I'd say, but he's of more value as a unique voice than a jack-of-all-trades. Zappa, I think, is one of the few guys who could qualify as both....though I'm still not sure he was quite as strong as any of the guys playing on G3.

Kirk Hammett is awesome. He's basically defined a new style of guitar playing. Remember that when "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride The Lightning" were released, there wasn't any formula for soloing over thrash rhythms. Now, if you listen to any band working anything like a thrash/speed style, you can usually hear at least a little Hammett in it. "Fade To Black" is "Stairway To Heaven" for the thrash generation, right down to the amazing solo.

Eddie Van Halen is most important, probably, as an innovator. Even if you credit Steve Hackett with tapping, Van Halen really brought a whole new approach to the table. His soloing is, obviously, impressive....Alvin Lee, even more wound-up. I get off more, though, on his rhythm playing, which has always been phenomenal.

Vito Bratta's another good one, though you can really hear him working through a Van Halenesque style. Still, I think his sense of melody alone makes him a unique voice...and he was able to kick in another gear where a lot of guitarists don't have one.

    Well, though for now....

I am very glad I went to G3. It turned me on to Satriani, who I'd already vaguely liked in a noncommittal way. Then this weekend, I bought my first Eric Johnson CD and I fell in love. Would I be right in thinking he's from England? What does the music in "Cliffs of Dover" have to do with the actual cliffs of Dover? I've been there - they're cliffs...white chalk cliffs with some water at the bottom. I dunno, man...:-) Ann

Yes of course that would be cool, but now I'm just waiting for the new DT album :-) However if DT would do opera, I think there must be a good orchestra with them. And orchestra's part must be almost dominating, otherwise it would not be opera = then it would be just another DT song. ...Did you get it?

..Well I have never heard about "Ayreon" CD's but if someone is lookin' for good metal opera (symphony) that is WALTARI's "YEAH! YEAH! DIE! DIE! Death metal symphony in deep C". Anyone heard about this???

Sorry, it's on the 12th. It was originally scheduled to be on the 13th, and was changed after the date had been announced, which is what led to the confusion. I haven't heard a reason as to why the date was changed, but I have a hunch that somebody involved with the show is superstitious (doesn't want to risk having it on Friday the 13th).

I must agree here. I have Ayreon's 'The Final Experiment', it goes off in a big way. Set in medieval times, 15 singers and 13 musicians, ranging from Death to Opera, its well worth a listen.

Have they done anything beside The Final Experiment? anyone?

First of all, Dusty asked about the new Nevermore, "The Politics of Ecstasy." I am actually listening to it right as we (well - *you*) read... It is defintely going to rate among the best cds of the year, if not *the* best in *my* poll. (BTW, it's coming, Syrinx) This cd is heavy, complex, and every other adjective you can think of (not *you* Bafu - you'll make some shit up) with regard to thrash/prog/power metal. Warrell Dane once again shows his mastery of the vocal realms. The cool thing about this cd is that you don't *get* it all right away. One (/me assumes grey poupon smirk) must listen, and listen again. I haven't even come close to catching all of this stuff yet. On a lyrical note, the songs tend to deal with media manipulation, lsd (like usual) and other stuff. But, you see, THIS SHIT PACKS A CRUNCH! Enough of that descriptive imagery.... The cool thing about it is that you can listen to it as background and it rocks. But if you *pay attention* your jaw may scrape the pavement. Ah. A segue. Jen talked about how to introduce someone to Dream Theater (the music, wise-asses), and mentioned the "Music as a Background" method. I am not sure I agree with this. Dream Theater, in specific, and prog music, in general, strikes me as a band/style to which one must pay close attention. There have been instances where I have been driving in the car with my wife, and Fates or DT or whoever plays in the background. Holding a conversation and *casually* listening to the music, I get the impression that the music is aimless and unpleasing to the ear. Of course, alone in the car on the way to work each day, volume up (a variable I am not even going to touch), I can focus, and the intricacies become apparent. I think this may be why the average music listener, who listens to music as *background* instead of *focus* tends not to enjoy progressive/intricate music so much as easy-to-digest popular pap. But I could be wrong. Itchy! You post too much about polls, you goon. ;-)
