that must've been a misprint. the new Fates Warning album is supposed
to be one song, somewhere from 45-57 minutes long. it's supposed to be
real time, containing the person's though over that period of time.

    and it's gonna kick ass

They were practically checking jock-straps when you went in. Though
still some cameras got it.....and were quickly detached from the
         owners.

As far as taping would go, about 1/4th of the acts had some really bad
sound. Too much base, not enough vocals, etc.

I think Chicago-boy Dave Urich did a cool thing bowing his guitar with
his whammy bar and using volume control to play his chords (how's that
for technical speak? :) ). He had Michael Angelo as a guest. This
guy was all runs and no real solo. Fast, but not extremely impressive
         as a complete player.

Hi all members of the Ytsejam I'm new here but I'd like to say that I look
forward to seeing some of you at the Providence show which is like ten
inutes away from where I am at college. My name is Greg and I'm an 18 year
old music major at providence college who plays guitar. Well I just thought
I'd introduce myself to you all because I'm really happy to be part of this
    . Thanks for your time.

    >Kirk Hammett is awesome. He's basically defined a new style of guitar
    >playing.

Uhm, this is sure to start some discussion :) Hammett has done some
    impressive stuff over
the years, but I never found his playing very extraordinary. As far as
defining a new style of guitar playing....I don't think defined is the right
word. Maybe provoked is the more appropriate term :)

    >Remember that when "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride The Lightning" were
    >released, there wasn't any formula for soloing over thrash rhythms.

This is arguable, but basically all I saw in his solos were souped up
Richtie Blackmore licks mixed with a lot of straightforward rock/blues licks
involved. Hammett's solos were the first real solos I ever learned because
they're pretty simple and not too difficult technically, and although not
terrible interesting or original, they generally sound pretty good.

However I've lost most of my respect for Metallica for obvious reasons. Not
to mention their isn't a real Hammett solo to be found anywhere on Load...

    >Now, if
    >you listen to any band working anything like a thrash/speed style, you can
    >usually hear at least a little Hammett in it. "Fade To Black" is "Stairway
    >To Heaven" for the thrash generation, right down to the amazing solo.
    >

I don't hear any Hammet in Marty Friedman's playing on Rust in Peace.

    >I am very glad I went to G3. It turned me on to Satriani, who I'd already
    >vaguely liked in a noncommittal way. Then this weekend, I bought my first
    >Eric Johnson CD and I fell in love. Would I be right in thinking he's from
    >England?

Glad you like him, I do too :) However, you're wrong in thinking that he's
    from England,
he's from Austin, Texas. Just listen to the 5th and 8th songs on Ah Via
Musicom and you'll hear the Texas boogie influence.

Let me just tell you that the new NEVERMORE just totally kicks ass!

If you're a fan of the older Nevermore albums, than you will be very pleased
with their latest collection of songs.
The music is a lot heavier than the "In Memory" EP and a little faster than
    their debut album.

The music IS very thrashy, while the vocals are very catchy and very intense.
Musically, this album is very progressive sounding. Nevermore has managed to
use some cool odd time measures and some very complicated sounding
    arrangements.

Anyone that is a fan of old school thrash and modern day progressive metal,
you must get "The Politics Of Ecstacy." You will not be disappointed!!

PS- Is anyone out there into MEKONG DELTA or WATCHTOWER?

    If so, let me know!

    Later on!

Hey! As you all well know by now, me and 6 of my friends are going to the=
Providence show on the 12th. However, none of us have ever been to the S=
trand before. In fact, none of us even live in Rhode Island. This gets in=
teresting when you consider that we'll be coming from several different s=
tates, and have no idea where to meet. I have everyone's tickets (or, I w=
ill when Next sends them to me). Is there someplace nearby the Strand whe=
re we could meet, to hand out the tickets? Or perhaps some sort of landma=
rk at the Strand? Just telling them to meet me at the front door, in a cr=
owd of 1000 people, is going to be a hassle. Any help you guys can give m=
e, as always, will be appreciated.

DTC - I've seen "Waiting for Godot" and "The Tin Cup" posted as titles
for the new album. Before my dumb ass realized that maybe they weren't
really true, I read "WfG" for the first time. Pretty neat play. I'm
gonna read it again. I assume that no one outside the DT circle knows
what the title really is yet.

YT>First of all, Dusty asked about the new Nevermore, "The Politics of
    YT>Ecstasy."

My band, Big Swifty, was defeated at Springfest '96 in Pensacola, FL, in
the Battle of the Bands competition by a band called Nevermore. I didn't
get to see them or meet them. This probably isn't the same band, but
    could someone confirm this?

YT>not sure I agree with this. Dream Theater, in specific, and prog music, in
YT>general, strikes me as a band/style to which one must pay close attention.
YT>There have been instances where I have been driving in the car with my wife,
YT>and Fates or DT or whoever plays in the background. Holding a conversation
YT>and *casually* listening to the music, I get the impression that the music
YT>is aimless and unpleasing to the ear.

Hmmm...I was listening to the tape I got in the mail today (Thanks,
Brian Kirk! You da man!) as a result of my participation in the prog
tape swap that was organized on here this summer. I was trying to
replace a 4 ft fluorescent light fixture in my room by myself while the
tape was playing. Some of this stuff that I'd never heard before drew my
concentration away from the task at hand so abruptly that the light fell
on my head a few times and caused me to shout obscenities at the top of
my lungs. I was trying to *casually* listen to the music, but I
    couldn't. Maybe I've got a birth defect...

Someone posted earlier about how Zappa was probably inferior to the
guitarists on the G3 tour. I'm not gonna argue with that. But a thought
crossed my mind when I read it - Vai (and possibly the other 2) would
probably disagree. Modesty? Maybe. I just thought it was neat.

You 9 hundred and thirty-something people are great :)

I am still kind of reeling. On Sunday night, I went to the
Pacific Rim Drum Invitational in Vancouver B.C. where Gregg
Bissonette, Russ McKinnon, Dennis Chambers, and Mike Portnoy
did their repsective clinics. Bafu Vai was kind enough to drive
all the way up there and back through some seriously funky
weather conditions -- skies that would turn green for no immediately
apparent reason, cloud holes shaped like major constellations,
and buttloads of snow that seemed to radiate from a single point
    and SPIRAL toward the windshield.

The event was held at the prestigious Michael J. Fox Theatre (sic)
in the Burnaby Municipality. Russ McKinnon (Tower of Power) started
off the event with some extraordinarily tasteful latin grooves and
    solos.

Mike was next and he'd let his hair down and his goatee was in full
force. He came out and played like the frentic madman that he is.
After the solo he explained his philosophy regarding odd time drumming
and played the middle section of Metropolis. Halfway through it he
stopped because he actually broke a fucking bass pedal. After the
repair, he continued -- flawlessly. He also played along to Just
Let Me Breathe (w/ vox) and Raise the Knife (w/o vox) as others
have reprted. He rounded it off with Erotomania.

The real kicker of this invitational was Dennis Chambers. This man
can play singles faster than I can roll my tongue. He was just as
impressive as when I saw him perform with John McLaughlin and Joey
    De Francesaca.

Gregg Bissonette played some interesting stuff as well -- clave,
Beatles tunes, a Hendrix tune, and the obligatory solo. Wow.

The end of the show featured all four drummers on stage together
jamming. Bafu and I had managed to get to the front row by this
point and wathcing four of the coolest drummers jamming five
feet in front of us was absolutely amazing. Dennis started it
off with a funk groove that would make your ass bleed. The other
three mimicked it and as three of the drummers played the groove,
one would take a solo for twelve bars or so, followed by the next.
I think they were all too excited to be together because evryone
was playing way too loud. They obviously couldn't hear each other
and the time went to shit. Mike made the first real effort to calm
things down -- but to no avail. It was still fun to watch though.
Especially when Mike got up from his kit and traded drumsets with Gregg
right in the middle of the whole thing. Then Dennis traded with Russ,
Mike traded with Dennis, etc. Fun to watch but no one was playing
    in time.

    No here's the cool part.

There was a post show party at the Hard Rock Cafe. We decided to
head down there as well and see what we could see. The two of us
sauntered in a bit early and took seats upstairs where the get
together was supposed to take place. We got upstairs, ordered
food from the unnecessarily friendly waiter, and waited.

    And waited.
    And waited.

Finally the drummers show up. Mike waved to us then went and sat down
in the section reserved for important people. We caught Gregg and
Russ on the way upstairs both of whom were wonderfully polite.
I talked to Gregg at reasonable length - a very approachable, outgoing,
and friendly drummer. We finished our food just as Perfect Strangers
came up on the stereo. This was the perfect time to approach Mike, though
I was a bit shy at first to do so. We walked over and were greeted
with smiles. I got him to autograph my ACOS CD. We again talked
for a bit and went on our way because the house band was about to
play. These guys were crazy. Their guitarist went to Berklee and
it showed. They played Erotomania with Mike sitting in on drums
and they played it flawlessly -- exactly the same as what is on
the album. Mike later commented to them that he'd sat in with other
cover bands (though this band had their own material) and they'd
messed up a few of the tricky bits. But these guys did not. They
also played Satriani's war with Gregg sitting in.

What an evening. A phenomenal clinic followed by meeting some of
my drumming idols. This post is way too long so I'll end on this

By saying "pure" guitar playing what I usually mean is removing that silly plectrum from the right hand and replacing those silly metal strings with cat intestines! That's how it was done originally, that's what "pure" guitar playing is! STRUM THOSE SWEET ENTRAILS!! MEOW MEOW MEEOOOOW!!

"Pure" has nothing to do with sound or what sort of melody you construct because there are no rules as to what's "allowed" on any instrument. If someone does something on an electric guitar that you don't consider "guitar music," you are invited to create a new name, perhaps "impure guitar music," but denying sound is futile. Medusa hasn't gotten to me yet, so I still can't tell when something was written based on how it sounds.

    > I'd love to see Vai or Satch do an improv solo without their whammy > bar, because people often occuse them of using it as a "crutch".

This is usually do to the fact that these people can't understand the technique, or do understand and are furious that they can't do it themselves. Why else would anyone insult someone else's proficiency on an instrument? Either it's incomprehensible or it's out of reach. I can't presently do what Michael Hedges does, but since I'm inhuman I'm not looking to degrade him.

This isn't directed at YOU, Adam, just backing up your "crutch" statement, which I've heard and heard some more. I get to address the issue every time someone who plays exclusively acoustic guitar sees/hears me play my electric with a nice crunchy distorted tone, thus ruining what could otherwise be beautiful acoustic (clean-channel) music.

    > Would they be able to play well without it? I think they have enough > licks in their vocabulary to do a good job, but live Vai always seems > to jump back to it.

Yes he does. But not for vibrato, and that's the only technique out of dozens that someone without a bar can do to mimic Vai's whammy techniques. The only reason Vai would "need" his whammy bar would be to perform techniques that can't be done on any other instrument and can't be done on any other sort of guitar. As far as bends or vibrato or wavering bahr chords (chords frequently used by Mike Bahr), the fingaz will do.

Sounds like Johnson thinks he's playing a piano or something. Now that I think about it, I've never heard Johnson play chromatically, not even three or four quick notes in succession...

Are we flaming each other yet, Adam? :)

Greetings, All You Dream Theater Stalking Psychos!

I attended the Becker Benefit. It was awesome, but I am in a LOT of pain for having stood for 12 hours straight. I agree that MacAlpine stole the show. The openers (Michaelangelo in black latex leather pants *Eww* and Dave Uhrich) were great too. For those of you interested, here's a list of the performers:

Michael Lee Firkins, Gabriel Martinez, Jimmy O'Shea, John Purtle, Trevor Thornton, Marty Friedman, Mel Vasquez, Greg Howe, Jon Doman, Kevin Vecchione, Richie Kotzen, Atma Anur, Tony MacAlpine, Rickey Ricardo (no shit), Mike Terrana, Vinnie Moore, Nick Bucci, Dave LaRue, Rod Morgenstein, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Lukather, Billy Sheehan, Pat Torpey, Zakk Wylde, Toshi Iseda, Dave Uhrich, Michaelangelo, and Dimefag Darrel.

I was utterly disgusted, but not surprised to see the show turn into an "Eddie Van Halen" concert. Too many assholes there for my taste. I was really infuriated when the crowd started chanting "Eddie" in between Marty Friedman songs. So angry was I that I decided to leave before Eddie took the stage. I waited to see everyone else, but I don't even care for his soloing. Wasn't worth the BS. The rest of the show (Minus Enuff Z'Nuff, who I didn't mention because they suck bungmunch crunch and sang their 80's songs about drugs) was fantastic.

Now for a plug: There's a record shop that does a lot of mail orders called Impulse Records. They're a lot like Sentinel Steel or Dream Disc, and the owners are really cool. They stock all the Angra, Blind Guardian, Symphony X, Edwin Dare type stuff. If you live in or near Chicago drop me a line and I'll give you directions to their store. Otherwise, I Highly recommend calling this guy and getting on their catalog mailing list. The catalogs don't come out very frequently, but he stocks EVERYTHING (He stocked Spock's Beard for a while, and can still get it, no doubt) and has good prices. The phone number: (630) 529-3070. Tell him you're from the Ytsejam!

Also, they're starting an Indie Record Label called Pulse Records, and are interested in demos from any prog bands that are looking for a deal. What they plan to do: YOU pay for recording time, THEY press your cd's, booklets etc... and THEY will spread your music around. They are not interested in your song rights or anything, and they are talking about giving the artists the bigger cut of the profit for the albums. They're trying to make money for both ends and give you some exposure. If you're interested, mail me and I'll get you more info. Someone@prognosis.com

Finally, write me with any unknown prog gods or great bands that have cds out that I might not know about. I'm trying to help Impulse get some more of the most obscure music available. He has a big progressive consumer group. I'm talking about ANY bands, like Superior, Angra, Sieges Even, etc. If possible include the record label and album number. Thanks a million and take care all!
