Wait a minute... Vai is at Bimbo's on Wednesday the 20th, unless there has
been a sudden change of plans. I hope not. I can't wait two more days.
I've never been to Bimbo's so if anyone has seen a show there, please mail
me any info you have on the place (not directions, but more subjective
    thoughts).

Hey, what did Mike P. mean when he said Big Brother
was watching? Is a member of the band actually reading
all this? Is someone spying on us and relaying relevant
info to certain members? If so, forgive that young lad
who called you a wanker, James! Black Ytse'copters are,
at this moment, encircling his domicile. Oh yes, he *will*
be dealt with in a manner sure to send a message to
    future heretics.

Anyway, I'm unsubing since our company is having a
shutdown next week and it would look funny if they had
records of me entering (though I know of ways to get
*outside* bypassing security measures, I don't know of
any ways of getting *inside*) only to read my email.
And no, don't sell your LSI Logic stock, '97 looks
great... (no, that's not insider trading) Happy
Thanksgiving. I'll be in Reno, hanging out at The
Silver Legacy and CC on Wed. and Thurs.

That's because his wife was VERY pregnant at the time.

      Not to mention he

Sammy was against the idea of a GH album to begin with, regardless of
    who's songs are on it.

so besides being difficult to get along with (and driving Ed back to
    > drinking)

Sam has admitted that he is difficult to get along with. But the band
didn't seem to mind for the last 10 years. And as far as driving Ed back
    to drinking, get serious.

It's a great song, but it wasn't worth breaking the band up. Besides, his
vocals are so processed it's silly (especially on the pre-chorus).

I just ordered some stuff off CD Europe, and i was wondering if anyone =

I know that the jam is supposed to be for DT info only, but I'm
desperate here. I live in Southeastern Wisconsin right between
Milwaukee and Chicago. A few months back, I auditioned for a band and
made it. I play drums and have taken over the management for the band
since then. We're called "Willis"; we play all original material. To
get an idea of what we sound like - a mix of a variety of influences
such as Living Colour, Faith No More, Fishbone, Jane's Addiction, and
U2. We've got great material, and the musicianship is first rate.
    However, one small problem...
How do we get out into the music scene?
Schools teach how to read, write, and play music, but they don't
mention a thing about the music industry. Who should I be contacting,
where should the band be headed, and how do I make the moves? If anyone
has ANY information that could help us "kids" out, please e-mail me at
    apodaca@genevaonline.com.
                                                            Thanks,

I was flipping through and old guitar mag, and one of the cds that was new
at the time was King's X's FHL.. they gave it two stars and referred to it
as a pitiful piece of work. i was outraged.. then i recalled the first
time i ever heard the disc when i borrowed it from a friend of mine.. i
cant say i thought much different... it really had to grow on me. now its
one of my favorite albums and kings x has slowly become my second or third
favorite band. the exact same thing happened with Queensryches promised
land, which is by far my favorite QR album and another ALL time favorite of
mine. just wanted to make a note, that if you havent, dig em out and sit
down with either of these discs again, if you found what i did in them,
you'll find yourself a brand new cd that you didnt even have to pay for. ;)

Right. You don't pay to get into a car show with the idea of coming
out with one of the cars. But I've never seen the problem with
making an exact replica of the car and entering it in other car

Be careful what you wish for, Mr. Altman. ;)

After a nice intermission which featured a segment of Neal Peart's
(supposedly four-hour!) instructional video being projected onto a huge
screen above the stage, the lights went down and Dom "The Energizer"
Famularo lunged back out from behind the curtains to once again pummel the
audience with his overwhelming adrenaline and sharp wit. The next act out
    was Gregg Bissonette.

All I knew of Gregg was his work with David Lee Roth, so I was kind of
surprised when he sat down behind the simplest, smallest kit on the stage.
He started out with a rhythm similar to those of Soul II Soul ("Keep On
Movin," "Back To Life"), except that he accented everything with rim
shots. This was incredibly groovy. Like a chameleon, he did a huge
assortment of rhythms over various tempos. A memorable technique which he
began with, repeated later, and ended with (like a chorus) was a
sonically-ascending pattern of alternating between the kick and the floor
tom several times, then the kick/mid-tom, kick/high-tom, kick/snare, etc.
at high speed. Tastefully bringing the whole thing around full-circle,
Gregg reverted back to the opening rim shots to end the solo.

Included within the brochures was a handwritten (by Gregg) copy of eleven
drum patterns for eleven Beatles tunes. Gregg explained that he was
fiddling around with a Beatles cover-band, and proceeded to jam through
eleven Beatles songs, one right after the other. It was loads of fun. It
was something the crowd could sing along to. Gregg finished by quickly
breaking down some of Ringo Starr's more difficult patterns. I think he
quoted "Tell Me Why" specifically as having some really difficult stuff
that few people have ever given Ringo credit for.

Next up was Dennis "I Am Everywhere" Chambers. Never before had I seen or
heard a human being split his motor skills the way this man did. I can
only parallel him to a volcano - half the time maintaining a steady,
ominous rumble, half the time erupting into an awesome, ungodly mixture of
    fury and speed.

His opening solo was roughly a half-hour long, and he was playing a kit on
a raised platform. Rahul and I were sitting level with his kit. Dennis'
movements in that casual, tranquil seated position reminded me of a busy
chef intent on scrambling the perfect eggs, surrounded by flies. His
snarework emulated moving things around in a pan with a spatula. Every so
often, with no movement of his head, operating on peripheral vision alone,
this intent cook would grab a flyswatter and swat a bug from the wall.
Stir, flip, stir, ho hum I'm bored, SMACKSMACKSMACKSMACK the arms would
    fly everywhere!!

Now, splitting motor skills... His left foot kept time with the hi-hat. I
was nodding in time to that faint hi-hat sound, and amazingly this guy
never once lost the beat, not over an entire half-hour of soloing. His
right foot was attacking the kickdrum pedal like a woodpecker. Alternating
his kickdrum pedaling in a heel-toe-toe pattern, something I'd never seen
before, he achieved this amazing triple-hit that, when repeated fluidly
and quickly enough, could be transferred into relatively constant
sixteenth notes. The whole time it was as if his right foot was stumbling
to catch up with his left, a constantly-stuttering off-beat drone that was
at the same time circling the beat like a shark.

His arms were completely unpredictable. When he would go off, hitting
everything in sight, his arms would disappear from the widescreen that was
displaying close-ups of his playing. Damn he was fast. He defied eyesight.
When all four limbs started playing in different tempos, Dennis took us
through his "stalling engines" techniques. First he did an idle lawnmower,
then a deep chainsaw rumble, then a revving motorcycle. At one point
during this swarm of sound, he casually put his sticks down, and with his
feet still chugging away, lazily reached over and grabbed a towel. After
wiping his face and neck for about half a minute, he remembered he had
sticks lying around somewhere and went back to the traditional full-body
    style of drumkit playing.

Did I mention that he also did some of the most booty-shakin' grooves on
the planet? He hurt brains, he bled asses, whatever you wanna call it. He
    was consciously unreal.

The jams on his DAT sounded very much like Shawn Lane's compositions from
"Powers Of Ten." Style-wise, Dennis seemed to my limited ears to be a
cross between the guy from Dave Matthews Band and Mark Zonder. Busy busy
busy and always in time. An epileptic metronome. When he was in the mood
to stop moving and breathe a little, he took up the microphone and said,
"Usually in these sort of situations the audience doesn't get to ask any
questions. What I'd like to do now is take two questions from you guys."
What followed him saying this was dead silence for several seconds, which
shocked me because if Nuno Bettencourt (or ANY popular technically-gifted
guitarist) were on a stage in front of five-hundred guitarists and opened
the floor for questions of any number, he'd get blasted off the stage from
the chorus of shouts. Someone finally said, "Who's your favorite
musician?" to which Dennis unhesitantly replied, "John Coltrane."

The real knockout was his answer to the second question, which was "How do
you practice?" Dennis: "Um...I DON'T practice." And that's all he had to
say about that. Now I'm no drummer, but I don't think this is something
ANY aspiring drummer wants to hear. Ex: As a guitarist, I am relieved in
knowing that Steve Vai practices for 9+ hours a day. This makes me feel
comfortable in my inadequacy. Imagine Petrucci saying at a clinic, "I've
never really studied my licks, because I don't practice." People would
start vomiting and killing each other right there in the store. They'd
impale themselves on the nearest available BC Rich Warlock. The place
would be trashed. A riot would ensue.

Man, what the hell is left to say about the encore or the Hard Rock Cafe
or Mike "Really? That's YOU?" Portnoy? T.G.F.V.. (Thank God For Voices) for
    one thing.

    ;)

Ok I tryed to keep my mouth shut over the Yngwie bashing. Those of you
who know me well, know that I do not condone in any way judging a
musicians ability based on physical appearance. You're there to see them
play not look at their gorgeous bodies! ( yes....a beautiful long haired
on stage is a big plus...but not being beautiful does NOT mean you
    deserve to be bashed)
Yes, Yngwie is a concieted, wife beating, motherin law threatening,
record label insulting, get you rocks off in a second type of person.
    BUT!!!!!!!! AND I STRESS BUT!!!!!!
His singers usually are pretty damn good. Jeff Scott Soto is one of the
greatest R&B singers I've ever had the pleasure of being freinds with.
and Mike's work with Loudness was far superior to the japaneese guy they
had before him! Yes, Mark Boals does kinda suck when it comes to pitch.
But the others were very talented musicians....and saintly for having
the ability to not knock Yngwie out for grabbing the mic's from their
    hands.
    :P i've said enough....Im done rambling

Q:"how many guitarists does it take to change a lightbulb?"
A:" 10. 1 to change it and 9 to say they coulda done it better"

I guess it kind of bothers me that people seek to label music so
often. Maybe I'm a bit biased, but I never sit and listen to DT and
try to label it, because I believe you can't pin them down like that.
I don't consider their music ultraprog or ultrapop, just ultra-awesome.
After attending both the JP and MP clinic, I can tell you this Jon, they
sound even more "groove" oriented than ever...I can't wait to hear more!

They do what they do, and to me it sounds like 5 incredible musicians
in a room making sounds together that give me chills...no matter which
song it is, or what style it's written in. I'm satisfied to just call
            it Dream Theater!

    Peace,

    This joke sounds remot-lee familiar.

"how many drummers does it take to change in a lightbulb?"

"10. 1 to change it, and 9 to wonder how Neil Peart would have done it."

oh, the humor. i'm so funny i could piss myself.

            fuck.

            brb. need tissues.

or maybe I just enjoy going in to as much debt as I humanly
can before someone comes along and breaks my knees.

I was a little premature in my announcements earlier.
Basically here is the real info:

Dreamt.org accts -> They will be down, most likely starting Friday evening,
hopefully to be resurfacing some time around Mon or Tuesday depending
    on how happily things go.

IRC -> The irc servers will be going down at 12AM or so Thursday
morning/Wednesday night. They will be out of action for a while.
Hopefully it will be less than a week, but I am not sure, things are
    a bit hectic.

Mail to me -> I may be email diabled after this weekend for a few
days. If you need me in an emergency, you can mail me at skadz@pencom.com,
but please use this for EMERGENCY USE ONLY. I am not kidding. No inquiries
to what is going on or anything like that. I will send you hate mail if
you do. I use that address for work related email only and I can not
have questions about the mailing list/irc server/email accts coming in
    there.

The Mailing List -> This list will NOT be affected at all.

Just wanted to update everyone on what is going on.

    Later!

    Greetings, Ytsejammers (tm)...

    SlaveBlaze@aol.com remarks:

    >I think the problem with Yngwie, especially in the case of Magnum Opus, also
    >lies the vocalists he chooses. I really dug the guitar work on MO, but took
    >the CD back due to the singer. Blech.....but I guess it would be difficult
    >to find another LaBrie, wouldn't it???

Well, perhaps if Yngwie was a little easier to get along with, he could find
a decent vocalist who would stick with him for a while. As I recall it, most
vocalists didn't stay with the band for more than an album or two (though I
could be off base on this one because I'm too lazy to go searching through
all my Yngwie CD's). I do know that the singers who left the band (Joe Lynn
Turner being the most vocal about it) ALWAYS cited Yngwie's personality as
    the reason they left.

Who handled the vocals on Magnum Opus? That's one I don't have.

Greg Massi <gmassi00@sequent1.providence.edu>, in response to some remarks
on Alex Masi, had this to say:

    > Well thanks for being friendly. And by the way the name is a coincidence,
    >but you probably knew that. However was this Alex guy any good?

Alex Masi always struck me as a talented but stuck-in-one-mode type of
guitarist. His solo album "Attack of the Neon Shark" has some interesting
compositions, but more often than not Masi seems to run out of musical ideas
and just throw in a jumble of notes played at high speed. Sounds like
musical chaos. Unlike Yngwie, Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine and the rest of
the Bach-n'-rollers, Masi didn't seem to have any clear idea of where he was
going with his musical attack. Listen to "DFWM" for an example -- there's
some technically speedy guitar playing, but it just sounds like someone
tossed a bunch of notes into a blender and spun it at "Liquefy."

DT content: Thanks to everybody who recommended "When Dream and Day Unite."
I picked it up two days ago and am still listening to it. It does take some
getting used to, but it's still DT, LaBrie or no LaBrie. :)

    Cheers,
    Phil
