I think Chicago-boy Dave Urich did a cool thing bowing his guitar with
         his whammy bar and
    y his chords (how's that
for technical speak? :) ). He had Michael Angelo as a guest. This
         guy was all r
     but not extremely impressive
         as a complete player.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>
Sorry, this is what happens when I try to cut and paste. Anyway, what
do you mean by "Bowing his guitar with his whammy bar"? And were you referring
to Michael Angelo or Uhrich when you said he was not a complete player?
I only have "Fretnotized" by Dave Uhrich, because it's the only one I
have ever seen by him, but I think it's extremely impressive. I don't think
it's much of a stretch to say that his song writing reminds me of Satriani,
although I'm sure plenty of people would disagree. On the album his soloing
is very melodic and mature, except for maybe a little too much tapping. Has
anyone ever seen anything else by this guy? I would recommend Fretnotized
    to Satriani fans.

Hey, gang. I just thought I'd share this little tidbit of info I picked
up from a FAQ-Maintainers mailing list. It should help with the problems
we've seen with weird crap in some people's posts. (Unfortunately, this
    won't address that winmail.dat crap.)

The way that happened to me was when I moved my FAQ maintenence to a
different text-editor where a "smart-quote" snuck into my FAQ. Just one
"binary" character (>128 ASCII?) caused my whole FAQ to be MIME-encoded as
you described. Took me a while (and the help of this list) to figure that

I think the problem with Yngwie, especially in the case of Magnum Opus, also
lies the vocalists he chooses. I really dug the guitar work on MO, but took
the CD back due to the singer. Blech.....but I guess it would be difficult

This is basically in reply to Nate Lamar and all others who hear
rumours about OFB (Our Favourite Band... a habit I got into on the
Simpsons areas where they have OFF {family} as their acronym) losing a
    member or kicking someone out...

The trials and tribulations of DT are not nearly so colourful and
media-friendly as that. James is still in the band and there was never a
time where he was even close to being out. Same with Derek. The five
members as we know them get along quite well, really. Any time you hear a
rumour about a member of OFB being out, you can basically laugh at it...
there's nothing to it. And besides, being connected with band mgmt through
about 9 different people, this list (Ytsejam) would EASILY find out first.

It seems as though everyday at least a couple of Jammers give a
review of one of MP's clinics. In each review there is a brief
description of which songs off the new album he plays. The impression
that I have gotten over the months (and don't forget, I haven't heard
ANY new material yet) is that half the album is ultra-proggy (Raise the
Knife, Lines in the Sand) in the vein of Metropolis, and the other half
is ultra commercial/poppy (Just Let Me Breathe, Anna Lee) in the vein of
Another Day. Can anyone who is familiar with the new stuff try to
describe it so I can have a better idea of what to expect to hear in
    December (Toad's and The Strand!!!)?

Also, I know that Metropolis pt.II is written
(yeeeeeeeeeeeessssssss!!!!!!!!). Does anybody know if it is intended to
    be on the new album?

    Thanks

After much deliberation by the rest of the band members, it was decided that
rather than get a new pathetic wanker, they'd stick with the old pathetic
    wanker. :)

Seriously...I don't know how that rumor started (perhaps an outgrowth of the

yes well when they recorded Humans Being for twister not only did Sammy
ignore the director's request to not write about tornados, he only came
in for one day to do vocals. then flew back to Hawaii. Ed came up with
the name for the tune and did they low vocals which were recorded and
never discussed with Sammy because he wasn't there. Not to mention he
threw a hissy fit when he found out that they might include more songs
from David Lee Roth's days as frontman on the first greatest hits album.
so besides being difficult to get along with (and driving Ed back to
drinking) he didn't act like a band member and probably didn't deserve to
    be one anymore.

Ed just wants to play music with band not 3 guys and a tempremental frontman.
although Roth was a great showman he's just as jealous as Sammy.

    here's a lame attempt a DTC
just think of it this way..with Eddie's fireworks and Gary's range and
style VH just might become the DT of Hard rock, although obviously more
succesful and they're already millionares but hey I said this was an
attempt. I get the feeling this is a positive move for them.

    >>>Kirk Hammett is awesome. He's basically defined a new style of guitar

    >That's possible. You could certainly put together a credible argument that
    >what a thrash solo should sound like has been guided by a number of other
    >guys -- King and Hanneman, of course, Mustaine's various cohorts, Chuck
    >Schuldiner, Alex Skolnik -- but Hammett was really there, defining what was
    >going on.

Actually, I disagree. I think Hammett was just RE-Playing stuff
that had already been done. You name me a Hammett solo, I'll look it up in
my friend's collection (I only have Justice, and I seriously dislike
Metallica for one reason or another, but that's me) and then reference it to
my collection and find something that came out before it that was a major
influence. The reason I dislike Hammett so much is because he relies on non
melodic tools (the way he uses tapping or the wah) too often (and both
tapping and wah can be immensely helpful in creating a melody, so don't get
me wrong) and when he DOES go melodic, there's nothing new there. I will
NOT say he can't write a solo, because he's done some solo's that even stick
in MY head, but for the most part, it's not something that impresses me.

    >Metallica was, by far, the most important band in establishing a
    >thrash/speed scene

TOTALLY have to disagree with you there. The trio (and arguably
Slayer, though they've always been a bit heavier) Anthrax, Metallica and
Megadeth were all of equal significance as far as I can see it. What's
become of the bands now is meaningless... it's what they were that matters.

    >At any rate, I'd say Hammett's early playing sounded a lot more like Uli
    >Roth than Blackmore (of course, Blackmore and Roth aren't THAT disparate, so
    >maybe the comment isn't such a powerful rejection of what you say).

That depends on what era of Roth you're discussing. Hammett never
sounded ANYTHING like Roth's solo work. Friedman and James Byrd sound
closer to that style, but it's far more eastern than Hammett, and very
technical. They also use the wah, but they do it lyrically, not the cheesy
way Hammett does (pushing the wah up and down every 8th note tends to SUCK
IMO). I'd say I hear more Blackmore in it, and maybe a bit of Satriani here
    and there.

    >Certainly, there's some amped-up blues licks in there, but I always thought
    >of Hammett's playing on the first couple of records as being in the
    >Euro-Metal, arpeggiated, modal tradition, but bred with a higher level of
    >aggression.

You need to listen to some more Euro Metal. Hammett uses maybe 2 or
3 different arpeggios, so I wouldn't call that a major factor in his style
either. This is one of those players I really tried to like... but...

    >>>Now, if
    >>>you listen to any band working anything like a thrash/speed style, you can
    >>>usually hear at least a little Hammett in it. "Fade To Black" is "Stairway
    >>>To Heaven" for the thrash generation, right down to the amazing solo.

So even though I never really liked Hammett, you're saying that when
I do thrash, and solo over it, I'm influenced by Hammett and not the players
I've enjoyed and emulated as I've developed my style? This is a weird area
    you're headed for. :)

    >>I don't hear any Hammet in Marty Friedman's playing on Rust in Peace.

    >In other places, his
    >modal playing actually DOES remind me a little of Hammett, though their
    >sounds aren't particularly similar.

How can you say that!?!?! Friedman's been doing Metal Shred guitar
for longer than Hammett! I know it's hard, but sometimes it's good to try
and listen to someone without comparing it to someone else. We all have to
compare who we listen to with the first band of that style we enjoyed...
it's a hard habit to break. I'm as guilty if not more guilty than everyone
else. But I'd consider it to be a really strange if you don't hear Hammett
and Friedman as two totally separate voices. Friedman is possibly the most
unique guitarist from that era. You should be able to tell him playing a
simple phrase apart from ANYONE else playing it, because he goes out of his
way to make it foreign. This is not a knock at you or at Hammett. Just an
    observation.

    Be well.

Did any jammers happen to catch the Als show in Chicago? It was
truly amazing. I got to see some of my favorite guitarists play for over 7
hours. This was both a good thing and a bad thing. Some guitarists, not to
mention any names, just played very fast and totaly off the point of the
"song" that they were soloing over. Tony McCalpine was incredible, as was
Dave Uhrich and Marty Friedman. The crowd was very much a VH crowd there
only to see Ed and some of them were very obnoxious to the other performers
but all in all it was great. The only player I didn't really care for was
Michael Lee Firkins, he was very good at what he does but was just kind of
boring to me. Eddie was playing better than I had ever heard. He was loose
and sounded amazing, although he was nowhere near the technical level of
most of the other players, he came out and played real rock and roll and the
audience loved every second of it. Now, if I hear one more sweep arpeggio
lick played over and over again I think I will lose it. But untill the next
time I guess I will survive.

This won't end the discussion, but when you get to the level of the guitar

It becomes a matter of taste & style. It depends on YOU, the listener to

Well thanks for being friendly. And by the way the name is a coincidence,
but you probably knew that. However was this Alex guy any good? And while
I'm asking questions, does anyone know where I can get a transcription of
the solo to PMU and UAGM because I've figured certain parts out and I don't
have some sort of musician ego that, so I'm not ashamed to ask for help.
I've checked out the " Lifting Shadows site" to no avail, ao if any one out
there can help it'll be much appreciated. Thanks!

    hi all,

just curious, those who went to the MP clinic, with the new songs, did you
notice if he is still using the 7 strings? I was kinda dissapointed when he
started to do that 'cuz mine's only 6 string and that ment goodbye to all
    those cool riffs 8|

on the same note, is vai still on the 7 string or he's got a new guitar
for this new album. ( no disrespect but this guy almost has a new type of
guitar with each of his albums)

on the vibrato bar/ no bar thing....I guess the bottom line is music. and
i've played a lot of stuff to a lot of friends who do not know how guitar
    works other than there are six strings and you hit'em and out comes the sound;
as long it is an awesome solo they just don't care. I remember couple of years
ago I went to this concert and the guitarist did this huge solo with divebombing and fast runs and really wide whammy bends and stuffs my date enjoyed the solo
but later told me could have done with outhe cat's and dogs whining < the dive
    bombing ;)>
on the other hand my all time fav David Gilmour uses both hand and bar to get
his vibrato and frankly I don't care how he does it. I never noticed what kind
of trick he is using, i don't care if he uses too much delay or what, where's
the time to think this stuff when you're listening to PF???

these are just my 2cents. hope did not hurt anybody's feelings or something!

    enjoy the ride.
