    Attention 'Jammers:

SANGUINE SURROUNDINGS needs your help to get started.....

We are calling upon the fans and afficiandos of the LAST BASTIAN of great
music in the world (those of Dream Theater, Vai, and the like) to help
start another generation for more of the same.

SANGUINE SURROUNDINGS combines Dream Theater and Rush textures with the
fire and soul of Steve Vai and his peers. The result is quite unique-but
still extremely listenable. And what's more, both members have played
only 5 years or so each, have been and grown together that entire time,
and look only to GET BETTER in the future.....

So hop aboard this train now while the ride is slow, and fasten your
    seatbelts.....

Their first offering, STALEMATE, contains just the two founders of the
Surroundings and their first ever studio experience. Four tunes-30
minutes long. Without a whole band, the music is awesome (instrumental
Dream Theater/Rush type of stuff), but with a full band, their debut
album should be MUCH more complex and intense.

Help these two 19-year-olds make their dreams come true, and show your
interest in a NEW PROG band from Central California by sending a message
    to the Di-Sigma interface at * dgamble@uop. com *

Look at it this way: if they hit it big, you have a collector's item
(one of 300!) that is sure to be much more valuable.
If they fizzle and die, you still have a great cassette for only $5.00

NOTE: 200 of the 300 cassette (available in Jan-Feb '97) are reserved
exclusively for Ystejammers because if there is one band on this planet
that could kick Sanguine Surroundings' Ass to India, it would be our
beloved Dream Theater....and because we love you, 'jammers.

Thanks. Hope to see you on the RO-AD............

Sanguine Surroundings will send a copy of this demo, if the response from
you if positive for the most part, to:

    STEVE VAI's upcoming record label
MAGNA CARTA (who records many things in the studio in Campbell Stalemate
    was laid down)
AVALANCHE (the guys with whom SAGA and AIRBORNE are affiliated)
    ???????? (any suggestions?)

PS A prepared statement from the band follows soon to all those who
send mail to dgamble@uop.edu outlining the project, what it sounds
like, and how to get it once it's printed. We always appreciate comments
(good or bad) and word of mouth advertising

Thanks for your patience with this long letter. We desperately need YOUR
HELP to get started. In the meantime, Dave is posting stuff with DTC as
    we speak......

Great idea, but you forgot to ask people to submit their results through
private e-mail. This list can *not* afford every active subscriber
posting their favorite CDs here in the Jam. Glenn, if you're willing to
accept private e-mail for this poll, let us know.

If not, there is no poll.

Either way, don't post this stuff here at all.

Does Vai play 6-string on the whole new album? I'm almost sure that
There's a Fire in the House and Blowfish (track 5) are tuned down, but I'm not
sure if it's all the way to B. I could be totally wrong, but they sound
awfully heavy. I'm assuming this was in an interview, if so, where was it?
One day, I may actually post about DT...

heya guys.... i was thinking (dont worry, didnt hurt myself this time), and
i'm gonna start up a weekly or so newsletter for all the people who hang out
on irc.dreamt.org... just kind of if anything interesting and worthwile
and/or exciting is happening its kind of a way to say "get yer butt on the
server" or if things like the irc server go down and we need to find another
server to resort to, people wont have to worry about missing it on the jam
and there are also a lot of people not on the jam who need to know this
stuff. also if anyone wnats to put any comments into each letter and stuff
that'll go in there too... put it this way- if you're interested, email me,
i'll add you to the list, and sometime this weekend or next if i want to
wait for more people to hear about it first i'll send out the first letter
giving the lowdown and highup. :) hope to get some good feedback with this
    one. later on guys!

Since the Van Halen discussion seems to be heading towards a small
semblance of DTC (the question of whether VH will move to the next
level of musicianship and be Hard Rock's answer to DT), I thought
I'd give my take on the situation.

I heard Ed and Alex call the Mark & Brian radio show down in LA one
morning a few months back, and they talked about the situation at
some length. As others have pointed out, there were several factors
involved in Sammy's departure. The Greatest Hits thing kind of broke
the camel's back, but it sounds like the defining moment came
when Sammy refused to change a lyric or part of a song or something.
It wasn't that he refused to change it, but his attitude about it.

Ed thought that something else would sound better, or more appropriate,
or whatever, and Sam basically said, "I'm not changing my song."
This really upset Ed, because he's always considered VH's songs to
belong to VH; they don't belong to any particular member. I mean,
we all know that Ed does 90% of the songwriting for the band, and
yet he always emphasizes how they all take part in the writing
process. And when Sam called this "his song", and refused to even
accept any suggestions or be open to discussions about it, that's
when Ed told him to go be a solo artist, because that's how he was
    acting.

FWIW, Ed said that he and Sammy parted ways on a fairly positive
note. They told each other to keep in touch, sorry it didn't work
out, call me sometime, etc., and the next thing Ed new, Sammy
released his press release that we all read about in the paper.
I guess his tirade took Ed by surprise, because Sam had never been
    that upset in person.

Of course, this is all from Ed's perspective, but I thought it was
    interesting.

Personally, I'm excited about the prospects of Gary Cherone singing
for VH. A singer who formerly belonged to a band with progressive
tendencies rather than poppy tendencies can only be a good thing,
IMHO. An interesting part about that interview with Ed was when he
said that while Gary was in LA visiting and practicing with them,
they wrote like 7 songs in one week. It sounds like they've really
got their creative juices flowing. I'm glad to hear this, because
I thought they were getting pretty stale with Balance.

And just so this post isn't completely off-topic, I'll tie this in
with another thread that's been going around. I'll compare Eddie
to all the other guitar players out there: he's got the best smile
of them all. Nobody gets across how much they're enjoying themselves
when they play the guitar like Eddie does. That's what attracted me
to them so much in high school, although I became disillusioned
with them a few years ago when I started getting frustrated that
they never progressed from one album to the next (enter my salvation,
    Dream Theater =).

I hope they make some big strides with Gary at the helm...

    Jim

    Woo! Woo!

Today was pretty cool as I got one of the guys at work into Dream Theater. :) He's a HUGE Scorpions fan so I decided how to rev him up. He likes Rush, but only has heard Power Windows, so I started him with Hold Your Fire and Roll the Bones. Next, I tempted him into some Queensryche (Empire). I slapped Images and Words on his desk and he asked if I'd bring Awake in tomorrow. Woo! Woo! Also got him into Savatage, too.

Anyway, about prog bands/albums you need to look for... Shadow Gallery, Enchant, Magellan, DREGs of the Internet, Vol I., Lemur Voice, Savatage, Extreme (III sides), Queensryche, Rush, Fates Warning, Marrilion, Iron Maiden, Crimson Glory, Helloween, Pink Floyd, and Dream Theater (I heard these guys kinda suck, so watch out!) :)

Other great kinda prog stuff: Mr. Big, Saigon Kick, Testament, Asia, Megadeth, Yanni, Bon Jovi :), Queen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson... The list is never-ending! (Well, it probably is, but I'm rambling...)

BTW, I agree that Midnight (singer for Crimson Glory rokz nadz. Probably went into hiding after the pictures in Transcendence, though. Scary guys, great music, lotsa hair...

Also, I just got a letter back from Magna Carta that they will be tentatively releasing a new Shadow Gallery album in March/April 1997. Looks like this's gonna be a great year for prog!

About the Hammet vs. Friedman (and everyone else):

It's impossible to say that Hammet defined the thrash solo. People make this coment based on, of course, his early work. What everyone seems to forget is that Dave Mustaine wrote most of the early Metallica stuff (just as he does in Megadeth), including a great many of the solos played by Hammet, and much of what Hammet played up through the black album was written by Hetfield. Obviously, his solos weren't written note-by-note for him, but someone else gave him at least the basis, if not more. Most of the riffs he played were written totally by someone else. The big reason for the small similarity there is between Hammet and Friedman is the influence of Mustaine. Personally, I think that there is a very definite difference in their sound. Hammet (until recently) was prone to the 4 or 5 power cord and then throw in a solo (which was usually simple, and many times didn't really fit the music of the rest of the song) school of heavy metal, working in some simple finger picking lately, while Friedman was both capable of being more melodic (again, a heavy influence of Mustaine) and capable of a better shred. Metallica did some fast stuff, but they could never get to where Megadeth was on, say, "Poison was the Cure" from Rust in Peace. What it comes down to, in my opinion, is that not only can Friedman shred Hammet in a thrash solo, but Hammet also can't write or play as well as either Friedman or Mustaine.

All I can say is it's cool. Fukin' cool. If you like Rush, you'll love it. The only bad part of the CD IMHO is when the dude from Slaughter sings. Yeow! I don't like that. Labrie sings a couple songs, and Petrucci does some awesome lead guitar work. You'll definitely know it's him. Fates Warning does a cover of "Closer to the Heart" that kicks butt too.

Here's a listing of who does what from DT:

Portnoy --- Working Man By-Tor and the Snow Dog Analog Kid The Trees La Villa Strangiato

    Petrucci --- Jacob's Ladder

Labrie --- By-Tor and the Snow Dog Red Barchetta

Sorry if I come off sounding like a dick here, but WHY THE HELL IS DREAM THEATER ONLY #5????? Second, why are they even on this list? Didn't ACOS come out late last year? Anyway, I would definitely put them in either #1 or #2 here, but you're right, Steve Vai's new album kicks ass, big time.

Peace be with you and God bless.
