Cool, Einstein huh? Better bring your thinking cap that General

I'm terribly sorry if I came across as being angry. That wasn't my
intention. I merely wanted to remind everyone that posting your poll
    answers to the list-at-large is a no-no. BTW, I think it's a great idea
for a poll, and I'd like to see the final tally of the results. But
please send answers via e-mail, and not to the Jam. It's merely an issue
    of Jam courtesy.

I must disagree with the second, especially because I live in Phish's hometown of Burlington, VT. I wouldn't say that they're going to be the next Van Halen or anything, but they're a talented band who deserves at least to be recognized as such. IMHO, to equate them with a product such as Beck is unfair.

Yeah, but look at it this way. Kevin and the FW guys are friends. FW needed keyboard support. Kevin needed some stuff for his solo recordings. And, I would presume, since Kev has kinda been out of work lately, maybe he needs the extra cash.

Besides, can you think of a keyboard player more suited for FW's type of music?

So having said that let's move on to something more interesting. Does anyone know why Frank Aresti left FW, because I always thought he was pretty cool. My friend gave my " No Exit " for Christmas one year and I love that album very much, not that its the only one I have by them but its my favorite so far. Also, I was wondering if their were any people in the whole Rhode Island area or close by, that might be interested in forming a band, especially people who are in college around here but come from CT, because that would make things so easier. I have a 4-track to do very simple demos, but so I don't drag on and on and on like Glenn pointed out to me, if you are a drummer, bassist, guitarist, keyboardist, just send me a private e-mail and I'll tell you the kinds of things I am looking for in a band. If any of you are big fans of college basketball, watch when Providence College's home games are on ESPN or something and you might just see little old me being the lone guitarist in our pep band. Finally I want to get one thing straight, is DT just doing new material at these shows?

Does anyone out there have a video recording of any of the videos from Awake? The only one I have is Lie (which was the only one shown in the US, I think). If so, could you e-mail me?

I'm only asking because I'm working on digitizing them into an MPEG format for a CD-R.

    Any help is appreciated..... rq

A little more about Hammet/Friedman... (and if you don't care, then just skip this - people are more interested in these posts than your bitching, I would guess)

    > metallica had the definite edge in songs.

I don't agree, but that's totally a matter of taste and opinion.

    > Megadeth's older stuff before say, RIP, just was sub-par to Metallica.

And again... > And Lar's drumming is not quite up there with the best either

I agree, but I also think that he's definitely one of the better writers in Metallica (or as a friend of mine started calling them after Load, "Alternica")

    > To me, a GREAT drummer > is one who can play live situations as accurately and in-time as they do on > hte albums.

To me, a great drummer is one who can go beyond just keeping a beat and add in all sorts of fills (which is why I hate so much new music, with this trend of stripped-down kits). That's what makes Portnoy, John Bonham (Led Zep), Bill Ward (Sabbath), etc. superior. > In summary: Jaymz' riffs have powered what Metallica IS/WAS (fill in your > own blank on that one!) so revered for. When that wasn't there on the Load > album...well...

True. The reason (partial) for the abrubt change in style (or dropoff in quality, if you want to look at it that way) is that James decided to let other people write more (Hammet, in other words) - like what you said about Mustaine w/Megadeth, except that since Mustaine (IMO) is more talented than Hetfield and had (once again, IMO) a more talented band behind him, it ended up as a change for the better, unlike Metallica's case.

Okay, follow me here...if one list takes up 5 lines, and everybody sends their lists to the jam...I think you see where I'm going here. A while back everybody started posting favorite bands, dream band lineups, least favorite body moisturizers, etc. It got ridiculous. If you think you get a lot of jams per day now, just wait till people post their lists. Chris was trying to be helpful. And he is right in saying that this kind of shit, while at first a novelty, will balloon into foolishness. So let's just nip it in the bud while we can.

    Greetings, Ytsejammers (tm)...

Just wanted to say a quick thank you to everybody here who recommended Fates Warning to me (Rip, that means you especially...:) ). Got my copy of _Chasing Time_ today from CDNow along with some other stuff.

In a word: pretty impressive. (Okay, so that's two words, but you know).

I was just noticing the vocal styles of the two singers featured therein and discovered something interesting: the first vocalist, John Arch, sounds quite a bit like Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. I like Maiden, so that wasn't a problem, but I was just struck by the similarity.

When I heard the songs with Ray Alder handling vocals, I had to check the CD jacket again: I thought I was listening to Barren Cross by mistake, or something. Once again, not a problem, since I like Barren Cross too, but the vocals were eerily similar. Anybody else notice this?

The musicianship on the disc was superior though. Enjoyable stuff. Thanks to everybody who recommended it; I think I like this.

DT content (though minimal): Thanks to Bafu for the stuff he posted regarding the recent drummers' bash (pun certainly intended). Wish I'd been in your shoes; I'd give a lot to meet Portnoy. Especially since you got to talk with him about the Ytsejam! And the new band you mentioned sounds cool, if they're really as good as you say. If you find out anything else about em let us know!

    Cheers, Phil

This is not a flame, Richie, I do it, too...(in fact, I'm doing it right now!)

I hope everyone also realizes that this stuff only needs to be posted ONCE! If you cut out these kind of "gripe about the state of the 'jam" posts, you could cut out a 'jam a day! I know this is just another one, but anyone who reads the jam would have gotten the idea the first time. These last 2 posts (and this one) have taken up the bandwidth of about 12 or 13 brief Top-5 lists... This is silliness...

    Hey there troops!!

Crimson Glory back together?!?!?!?!?!? If this is true, WOW!! To whoever posted this, where did you get this info? This is great news!!!

As a side note the 1995 poll, I was sitting here thinking about what I would put in my top five of the year when I realized how many cool CDs actually did come out this year. Sure there were no new DT, Queensryche, or fates Warning CDs, but we did get new CDs from Rush, Nevermore (two from these guys!!! "Politics of Ecstasy still rocks and may be my #1 pick!!!), Galactic Cowboys (two from these guys too!), Mr. Big (Hey Man! was very good IMO), Steve Vai, Carcass( two from them too!!), Altura, Lemur Voice,Vicious Rumors, Varga (even though I don't like this one too much), Overkill, iced Earth, Kamelot, King Diamond, Threshold (this may have been out in 95 though), Eric Johnson, Elegy, plus a bunch more I can't recall off the top of my head right now and WORKING MAN. 1995 was a pretty darn good year for CDs now that I think of it.

1996 should prove to be a killer year with hopefully new CDs from DT, QR, Shadow Gallery, Fates Warning, Enchant (well maybe it will get released here!), Nuno Bettoncourt, Savatage (maybe), Threshold, Ivanhoe, Ashen Dawn, and God knows who else I am forgetting.

Well, I just wanted to reflect upon the year in CDs. Hopefully no one will hunt me down and shoot me.

    Later

Just wanted to bring up a couple of items I've never seen here.

A few months back I wrote a letter to Jens Johansson and metioned his tryout for DT's keyboard spot. Well, I got a letter back from him and he said that he didn't get the spot because "the guitar player didn't like the way I looked." I found this comment to be interesting.Any comments from anyone else in the know?

Another thing. About a year a half ago, a friend of mine who was a Jammer back then told me something about someone who committed suicide while listening to "Space Dye Vest". Does anyone remember anything about this?

One last thing about 1995 and CDs...does Angra's Holy Land count or was it released last year? That's all for today.

Cool CD of the Day: Seventhsign "Perpetualdestiny"

    Hey Dale Newberry,

Don't worry, I'm *still* under the impression that they're "Def Leppard" clones. And their new one "And This Is How I Feel" is a Jars of Clay rip-off. Too trendy, if you ask me.

Don't get me wrong, "Beginnings" was cool and all. I saw 'em in concert, and actually shelled out the money for it...but nothing really kept me from selling it later. They are pretty good, though. I guess a listen is worth it...
