Folks-
D-Man has kindly suggested that anyone with a Top-5 List of
discoveries or rediscoveries send me private email. That is fine,
though I must beg to differ with Chris on the amount of space said
"entries" would take up seeing as how a Top-5 Liszt takes up...5
lines. This seems to be incredibly short compared to the cut-&-paste-
fest that has engulfed the Marty Friedman thread. So, send me
private email if you want to contribute to the "poll." If, however,
you can't resist posting your Liszt to the jam, please refrain from
any commentary as D-Man will get mad at you (and me). Anyway, thanks
to those who have contributed so far.

Yes. Portnoy told me at the Hard Rock Cafe that Yanni and Yngwie and about
a dozen other "Y" musicians will be playing on it, which is why it's so
damn long (32 minutes, comprising half of the third disc on the upcoming
album).
Just kidding. He didn't say any of that. Metropolis Part II is one of the
Thousand Things I wanted to ask Portnoy about once I was on the road back
to Seattle, miles from Vancouver.

It is put together with the help of a bunch of people on the LoveHounds mailing list and has tons of info on her. I got into Kate when Hounds of Love was released. A friend of mine who played guitar in a progressive band in Mission Veijo, CA called Scenario introduced me to her (well, her albums anyway) and Marillion...been hooked ever since....

Nuno made a secret Gig last week, some people who attended said that is very different from what he was doing with Extreme, he played with 2 other guitarists, bass player and drums.... if you want to get more information about this you can read it in Jason kramers Extreme Korner, the address is in my signature, go to the current news section and to the mailing list section, the review of the show is in the last issue, Thanks.

In this day & age, let us not confuse: Jeff Beck with Beck Or Fish with Phish The first will be remembered, the last will be forgotten
On comparing (god) guitarists: How can you really compare them? Each is distinctive; those in a band need to fit the band. Even if they *own* the band, i.e., Blackmore & Rainbow, you've still got to tailor your style to get a cohesive band sound; you can't play lead every second of every song; even if you're the *best*; IMHO, that would quickly get boring. As to *SOUND*, the guitarists of an earlier age, even if they *shred* were/are limited, to some degree, by the technology of their recording days. Even today, recording in a *real* studio with a 32,000 track (hyperbole) mixing panel, etc., will do a lot for you compared to a garage, and 'neat vocals in a shower stall'. IMHO
>>>>>I heard Ed and Alex ....several factors involved in Sammy's departure...but it sounds like the defining moment came when Sammy refused to change a lyric or part of a song or something. It wasn't that he refused to change it, but his attitude about it. A change in belief, faith & morality
>>>>>Personally, I'm excited about the prospects of Gary Cherone singing for VH. A singer who formerly belonged to a band with progressive tendencies rather than poppy tendencies can only be a good thing, IMHO....I hope they make some big strides with Gary at the helm... I agree. As I've discussed a little off the JAM with fellow Y'Jammer Dale N., it is rather interesting that one of the reason's that Sammy probably left was because of his newly acquired faith/beliefs; and that Gary, a person of similar, if not stronger, faith/beliefs, may be the new man writing the lyrics/singing the songs. If Gary doesn't lose his faith/beliefs, I could see Gary refuse to sing many of VH's earlier songs, especially those from the DLR era., and that there'll be great change, at least lyrically, in the future VH. Maybe VH is really maturing. I wonder what influence(s) Valerie (VH) Bertinelli (sp?) & Wolfgang have in all this... My last post didn't have that nasty Dat file attached, so this one shouldn't either, but if it does, I'll continue in my efforts in resolve this problem.

Hi all First I just have to apologize to all of you. As you most certainly remember I'm always trying to keep useless posts of this list. But now I've changed my mind. You see, last week I attended a seminar, and was because of that not logged in for a week. And as you may understand this week I have a *'=A7=B4 of a= job keeping up, and the same goes with the week before my trip. So I ended up with almost 2k of unread mails in my in-box, =B4cause I have= a job as well, and now I'm reading them through. So I thought: Ooh shit, guess I have to throw unread messages! And fortunately they're just filled with crap so I spend like one minute/digest (yes, I read kinda slow) and by tomorrow I've most certainly kept up with you, and will be in any thread throwing opinions, you see ! Then, someone (in my reality jam 200X, just) said that it was fun reading jams from around #1000 to see what kinda off-topics topics we were talking about, and all I can say is: Get yourself a job, and you'll have that kind of marvellous experience every weekend.=20 Right now you've been arguing about; What Neil Peart says about bands James Joyce Bootlegging-legalties a band called Korn Adrian Legg if WDADU is good the US election how to pron. our names=20 yeah, I _think_ you see what i mean... Ok, this was a very unnecessary post, but I personally don't mind if they are 1234 or 1235 in front of me ! And this was all meant as a cheerful kick in the bottom, and my kinda weird way of saying, that I like you all, no matter what, and I've really missed you all! Ok, see you soon. Fortunately I can't waste more time or bandwidth if I'm supposed to keep up with you, bye

Hmm, I have heard a lot about these guys (they've been covered more than once in HM Magazine), but have never actually given them a listen. Maybe I'll check them out. I was under the impression that they were Def Leppard clones. Maybe I was wrong (wouldn't be the first time, hehe :).
I FINALLY got my check in for Tapestry. WOO HOO!!!
I was further bummed today when I found out that Adrian Legg is opening for Eric Johnson this Friday in St. Louis, and I have to work that evening (I've been VERY interested in hearing him with the recent discussions on the jam). Rip, let me know how it goes. Oh well, at least the Dec. 8 Vai show @ Mississippi Nights is happening. WOO HOO!!!!!
If anyone is interested, there is a guitar show at the St. Charles Expo Center this coming Sat. and Sun. (23 & 24). There are supposed to be a number of dealers and buyers there. I plan on going. If anyone wants info, I'll give you wht I've got (e-mail privately, please).
>He's a fellow bassist and that rules Damn straight. :)
Now that I am FINALLY caught up on my backlog of jams, I will go put some killer tunes (Hmm, let's see, DT, DT, or DT. I think I'll go with DT), and call life good (well, as long as the CD's on). Cheers.

Metallica did some fast stuff, but they >could never get to where Megadeth was on, say, "Poison was the Cure" from Rust >in Peace. What it comes down to, in my opinion, is that not only can Friedman >shred Hammet in a thrash solo, but Hammet also can't write or play as well as >either Friedman or Mustaine.
Okay, I just thought I'd jump into this debate a little bit, but I don't want to start any huge thing...just that IMO (<----notice that...), in metalllica's earlier days, or should I say "harder" days before TBA, metallica had the definite edge in songs. The drawback was that Kirk did seem to recycle some solo stuff that other bands had done (Diamond head for example, and Iron Maiden etc). The MAIN THING that held Metallica up over ANY other band of its type (to me remember heh) was Jaymz' awesome riffs and song structuring. I'm not a musician and don't pretend to be, but I know complex, well-thought-out music when I hear it, and even though Megadeth's older stuff before say, RIP, just was sub-par to Metallica. Then, all of a sudden, Dave gets REAL good for some reason. Maybe it was the fact that he finally let other guitarists get some solo stuff on there and concentrated himself on mainly writing songs' structures and lyrics. Nowawdays, however, I DO believe that Megadeth is so much superior to the recent album by Metallica. And Marty is so much more of a great lead guitarist. He's just MUCH more into what he does for a living: practicing endlessly, paying attention to meters, and things like that. Kirk on the other hand, seems to have let his guitaring take a back seat to his lifestyle and just living off the songs that made the band he's in famous in the first place. Not that I don't think Kirk has a real ability to come up with cool solos when he wants to and puts EFFORT into it, because he does, but it's like Brian said, Marty has the technical, and talent edge over Kirk IMO. And Lar's drumming is not quite up there with the best either, at least in the live situations. VERY sloppy live player, needs more practice like kirk hammet. But, he is great in the studios. To me, a GREAT drummer is one who can play live situations as accurately and in-time as they do on hte albums. OR, if they can creatively come up with other beats that go with the songs, but sometimes lars doesn't quite achieve that. But he gets the crowd so pumped up with his constant energy no one seems to notice. That's what bootlegs are good for I guess.
In summary: Jaymz' riffs have powered what Metallica IS/WAS (fill in your own blank on that one!) so revered for. When that wasn't there on the Load album...well... 1) Hey people, I have a question about Helloween that maybe some of you know the answer for. The question is: who the hell sings backup vocals on their latest CD High Live? Just crurious.
2) Another question. I saw a CD by Joey Viera (bassist for FW) the other day. What kind of music is it? Is it prog?
3) Is it confirmed that Kevin Moore will be playing keyboards on the new FW? If it is, that will definitely rule. Still, wouldn't that be kinda like going back to the kind of music he decided to run away from?
4) If somebody from Dream Theater is reading this, there's a suggestion I have for you on your next tour: COME TO PUERTO RICO!!! YOU WON'T BE LET DOWN!!! THERE'S A LOT OF DT FANS DOWN HERE. I'M BEGGING YOU, PLEASE PLAY IN PUERTO RICO.

Z: "Oh, yeah?"
X: "I'm...Bafu Vai."
Z: " ... Really? That's YOU?"
Woo-haa. Anyway, there was a really cool band playing at the Hard Rock Cafe called Marton. They were very Dream Theaterish, and featured two interchangeable bassists. One guy was slappity-funk man, the other played a Chapman Stick and a regular four-string (which he used to jam along during Erotomania). The keyboardist was a spitting image of Derek from the Awake tour. Wet spiked hair, black leather vest, the whole nine yards. But he kicked ass, so his outfit was excusable. :) The drummer was technical enough to remind me of Portnoy.
"These guys are SICK." --Portnoy, on Marton
The guitarist, David Marton, played a Parker Fly with an elastic wristband around the first fret to MUTE everything. He did loads of two-handed runs in the style of Reb Beach, with classical overtones that reminded me more than anyone of Yngwie Malmsteen. I didn't know people still played guitar the way this guy did, but he did SHRED most aggresively. He kept up during Erotomania like he had written the thing. Oh, did I mention they got Portnoy up on the drumkit to jam along for a cover of Erotomania? At that point it became obvious that the guys in Marton had practiced. ;)
Shelled out $10 to pick up their nine-track album. It's great stuff, reminds me of DT much moreso than Pink Floyd or Rush. Plus it's all instrumental. Musically it's more of a vehicle for David Marton to display his unbelievable chops, but there's an obvious amount of theory pumped into each track (composition) with decent playing all-around. Sunday evening, after the second set, he mentioned that he had gone to Berklee at the same time as Petrucci. He wondered if Petrucci remembered him, and Portnoy said he'd pass the word along. And speaking of Portnoy...
I don't think I've ever met a bigger asshole in my entire life. What a rude jerk that bastard was. Oops, forgot, Big Brother is watching, heeheehahahohoho gotcha... ;)
It was unreal having the drummer of Dream Theater quoting things I'd said months ago. Basically I held up three fingers and said to him, "Not TWO discs! THREEEE discs!!" and that just opened up Portnoy's Ytsejam-Trivia floodgates.
He knew I was at Petrucci's clinic this past June. He humorously mentioned that DT was shooting for a box-set release. He remarked about my letter that followed the release of ACOS in that huge packet that someone (don't remember who!) mailed to DT's management. I don't even remember what I said in that thing and this guy was quoting me. He then went on about how he was in total awe of Mike Bahr's ability to hunt down rarities. Stuff that Portnoy said "originated from my boom box! That guy gets his hands on everything!" I mentioned the word "Tapestry" and Portnoy basically admitted defeat.
Z: "No idea. He's got a soundboard dat recording of the whole show."
X: "Yeah, but wasn't the soundboard dat *YOUR* recording?"
Here Portnoy shrugged helplessly. Z: "Yeah. Explain that!"
Man, Dennis Chambers was soooo cool in that place. Hanging out, leaning on the railing, nodding his head in time with the music, big fat cigar in his mouth... What a cool cat. Submerging me beneath the glaciers of Antarctica wouldn't have made me HALF as cool as that guy.
Plus, after much prodding on my part of the individual members of Marton, David Marton finally got up the gumption to ask Portnoy if they needed an opening act if/when DT played Seattle next...or Vancouver if they were ever getting that far north... The 'jammers of the Northwest (America, not that other country up north) just might get to see these guys in the far future. :) (And if the friend of the band ever gets back to me, I'll post the necessary disc-ordering info here, assuming there are some guitar fanatics on this list.)
Next year I'm bringing my camera, dammit. :)
