have any of you heard of a band called "walt mink"? someone told me at work
that someone online mentioned to them that they were a great prog band, but
this guy didn't have any details beyond that. i was at the local music store
yesterday and saw their cd. i didn't want to buy it, because i have *no* clue
as to what they sound like.

    anyone? anyone?

    thankya. :)

Wilson Cat wrote this in the jam:

Someone mentioned the Mulcahey's show recently, and on my ticket
    it says:

                         WBAB & BUD LIGHT PRESENT

                              DREAM THEATRE

                           21 yrs & older w/ID

                                MULCAHEY'S

Maybe they changed it to 18+ ?????

Well, I wrote that because it's true. I have a Mulchay's ticket right next
to me and there's no mention of it being 21+. In matter of fact, I have the
newspaper article in front of me too and it clearly says 18+ on it. Plus, I
just happened to win 2 tickets for the show!!!!!!!! Anyway, I made sure
with the DJ and he told me that it is 18+.

hey, I know this thread is a little old, but I just thought I'd add that I
used to love to skateboard, watch anime cartoons (such as Akira etc.) and
stuff. I also read the first 3 or 4 series of the Dragonlance books, and
now of course, I listen to prog rock (oh yah, and lots and lots of
thrash/speed stuff!!). "Weird wild stuff!" as Johnny Carson would say! haha

Right now, I've got 2 Satriani cds and one Stevie Ray Vaughn cd stuck in the
player on shuffle mode...cool eh!? Not that it matters, just thought I'd
give you that little nugget. And in my car cd player I have Pantera's
Trendkill album loaded up ready to go for tomorrow morning's drive to school
and work. Pretty diverse wouldn't you say?! Later on tonight I'll probably
stick in some good new age music in my changer such as Tangerine Dream or
something like that, maybe even Oystein Sevag...he's good too. MUSIC RULZ

If you take the Turnpike from the south, it will take you longer to go up
to exit 11 (GSP) and then go south with Route 9 than if you take Route 18
    from the Turnpike.

If you're closer to exit 9 (Route 18) on the Turnpike, take that and go
Route 18 south. Keep going until the highway turns into a "freeway". This
should be 10 to 15 minutes. At this point, you should see an exit for
Route 9 south. Take the exit. Birch Hill is a little bit after the
    traffic light.

Warning: No DTC... please disregard if you want some.

As a Dallasite, I've heard that Pantera was, as Rip said, a Motley Crue
type of band in the late eighties (but werent they all). I also heard
that they swithed to the "crunch" sound to "make it." Apparently they
sucked until they switched styles, and couldnt sell tickets at Trees, if
you know what Trees is (its on the back of some Dallas based bands's
CD). But this is only what I have heard and is definately conjecture
    throughout the Dallas/Ft. Worth/Arlington metroplex.

I know I'm gonna get slammed for this but oh well... I dont think JP
plays with as much soul as I would like. Passion yes, soul no. I know the
differences are subtle and often they are the same thing, but I see a
difference. I think it has to with his classical training. I dont play
    my tombone with
much soul either, even in jazz band, primarily because I'm a classical
player by training. Of course I'm comparing him to SRV and Hendrix.
    Most people who are already angry wont take much out of what's next;
during the guiter solo on the DT video, the name of which escapes me
(Live in Japan maybe), you can hear the immaculately clean playing but
there is little in the way of "soul." It seems written out and rehearsed
to death. Even my father, not an authority on music by any means, but a
self taught musician and ex-music producer thought it lacked that little
    something.

Dont get me wrong, I think JP is one of the, if not THE, best players in
the world right now. But, as all of my fellow musicians can attest to,
there is always something to work on, to make better. In JP's case, I
think he can work on changing things up and work on his blues/soul
    playing.

I spoke with a member of the organization known as Ward Music (organizers
of '96 PacRim Drum Invitational). They didn't know anything about the
website and thus disassociated themselves with its creation/maintenance.
They also said that the release of an available audio/video of the show
for public enjoyment would be near-impossible as they would need the
permission of every performer who played at, and every sponsor associated
with, the show. Neat how the fans are the only ones who think it would be
beneficial to get this sort of business done BEFORE the event. Get 'em on
their way IN, not after they've dispersed to the infinite corners of the
    earth.

DT had "Cyclops" as one of its crowd-warm-up tunes playing before the Awake show the last time they came around, or it might have been FW who chose it. That song was cool, but I returned the album after one listen.

Unfortunately Keneally said the chance of them hitting the Northwest was very slim, so I doubt they'll make an appearance here.

    Hi Jammers,

Are there some jammers in New Jersey that plan to go to the 3 first shows of "the fix for 96 tour" (Poughkeepsie, Long Island, New Haven)? I will come from France for these shows and the hotel where I stay is in East Rutherford (NJ). I'm looking for a seat in a car or I can rent a car and drive you for free to the shows, but I need some help to find the venues. I hope that someone will be able to help me. Please e-mail privately at: auzzy@zen.dedal.fr.net I'm thanking you in advance for your help and solidarity. I think I will bring with me some interesting gifts for those who will help me. One was called "Ranma," which featured characters who were having difficulty in maintaining a set gender, but was nonetheless very entertaining. The other was called "Appleseed," which I thought was kinda cool. Regardless of the plot, both of these animes featured a healthy number of big guns.

    > another query - is it really so rare for a female to love DT? I noticed > one other besides me (i think her name is Jill) on the list, and in my > area, I am the only chickie. hmmm.......any explanations or ideas?

Someone once said that DT's music was complex and intricate. "Thinking" music that an untrained ear or mind would have to plow through and ponder upon first contact in order to truly appreciate or understand.

I venture that this has something to do with the parallel theory that men display a heightened usage of the analytical regions of the brain whereas women use more of the empathetic regions. This pattern of thought and choice within the human brain is not my decision or preference. It existed before I was born. I am observing what Is and answering a question based on a conclusion I have arrived at. Anyone with an eager swastika-brand may feel free to disinvite me from their sandbox.

Analytical : Empathetic :: Progressive Metal : Country

(No, Elliott, this is not a slam against country music. I just think it's more music that you feel, and feel immediately, whereas a lot of progressive music I've heard takes several listens to assimilate and get into.)

Of course, it could just have to do with the fact that men are naturally violent and enjoy breaking stuff and destroying things. Man do we love it! Ain't nothing like strangling some random guy in a moshpit (ESPECIALLY during a really good drum solo with lots of rototoms and double-kick action)! Energetic music allows us to further realize our potential for obliteration of objects/people. I disbelieve that country music could ever move me to violent, abusive activity. But Dream Theater? Let's get ready to RUMBLE!!

Hey jammerz! Me and Brian Levy are planning on going to the Paughkeepsie in one short week, but we need some help. If anybody is heading north from the city or Jersey, we could really use a ride. I've looked into MetroNorth trains, and we could get to the venue, but there's no guarantee that there will be a train coming back after the show. I don't want to get stuck in Paughkeepsie for the night, with work on Thursday, etc. No offense, I'm sure its a raging town!!! :) Anyhelp would be appreciated! Please e-mail me back privately if you can help two DT fanatics!! Thank you! -Adam
