No offense, Vince, but I know he had the hair, I thought we were
talking about Pantera andits vibe past-to-present. I am offering that
Phil was always harder than the rest of the boys and when he joined
the band just before _Cowboys_ (one release?), that he was the force
directing the band to its new image. That's what I hope someone will
         confirm.

Though I don't condone sellouts of any sort, I really have fewer
problems with Pantera going from glam to fist-in-the-face than this
Michael Bolton trick Metallica has performed.

    Hey jamlings,
I just picked up some used CD's for great prices. Got FW Paralles
& Awaken the Guardian, King Crimson-Thrak, and Rush-A show of hands.
The Rush I know but the rest are unheard. I don't know which one to
listen to first. I think I'll pick Awaken the Guardian.

These were all recommends from the jam so I bought them. At $6
    apiece I figured I can't go wrong.

    Thanks for the advice, jammers.

    Hey All ....

Your friendly neighborhood moderator here :)

Well, things are finally starting to settle down and get back to
normal. (Well, as close to normal as thing get in my life :):)
I have notice some small problems with the irc server, like it
has been dying off every night or so. I am looking in to it and will
probably be upgrading to a newer version of the server this evening,
    if all goes well.

Just a few quick things from me. I now have ordered tickets
for Toad's Place , the Strand, and Birch Hill :) So, you better
all be there :P I know a few people have asked and I was wondering
myself if we are gonna try and doo a pre-show agthering for BH.
Since it's on a Saturday it should be easy and I know I wouldn't
mind some food before going in to a show at Birch Hill, since I will
probably lose another 5 pounds in sweat this year :) So, all
you locals to the area, wake up and get some suggestions going
on the jam so we can figure something out. ANd as Pellaz already
said, NO, we will NOT go to the Fantasia Diner :P (Speaking of
which, I wonder if Al will bring the tapes this year ;);)

Next, VACATION!!!!!!!!! Yes, I am going on one.
Miracles do happen :) I will be in Vegas from this Friday until
Tuesday of next week. If for some reason, the jam breaks, DO NOT
EMAIL ME!!!! I will check on the status of things when I get back and
if anything seems wrong I will fix it then. I don't need to come
back to find half my mailbox filled with things like "Is something wrong
with the jam?" Cuz if I do , there will be something wrong with the
jam for everyone who sends me a message like that, they won't get it
    anymore.

I think that's about it for now. My email is working again, so if you
have been holding off emailing me because of all the problems I was
having with my mail, send away now, things are much better.

    See y'all soon!

Thought you might all get a kick out of this:

The Turkey Shot Out Of The Oven
    --- ------ ---- --- -- --- ----

The turkey shot out of the oven
    and rocketed into the air,
it knocked every plate off the table
    and partly demolished a chair.

    It ricocheted into a corner
and burst with a deafening boom,
then splattered all over the kitchen,
    completely obscuring the room.

It stuck to the walls and the windows,
    it totally coated the floor,
there was turkey attached to the ceiling,
where there'd never been turkey before.

It blanketed every appliance, it smeared every saucer and bowl, there
wasn't a way I could stop it, that turkey was out of control.

I scraped and I scrubbed with displeasure,
and thought with chagrin as I mopped,
that I'd never again stuff a turkey with popcorn that hadn't been
    popped.

    -----------------------

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

    Regards,

    Jon

..In the category of Most Regressive Thinking on a mailing list discussing Progressive Music.

Once again, Mr. Bafu has demonstrated his cluelessness in inter-gender relations. Bafu, the unanimous winner of the 1995 award, waited until November of this year to release his latest bungling performance.

Interestingly enough, Mr. Vai's technique remains unchanged from last year: 1. State the obvious - men and women are different. 2. Attempt to define a "scientific" reason for these differences. 3. Translate this "scientific reason" into demonstrable proof of male superiority. 4. Provide a large, sweeping generalization (specifically banned by Mr. Bahr) as an example of this proof. 5. Anticipate negative feedback using an popular straw-man technique - Nazi symbolism.

When bestowed this high honor, Mr. Bafu Vai still remained clueless as to what he may have said that could have been construed as even the slightest bit offensive to even the most sensitive member of the opposite sex.

"Sensitive" males all across the list chuckled profusely at the oafish naivety of Mr. Vai. Joe Kruger

    >I do not intend to slam you but I may come across that way. I apologize in >advance. This just hits a nerve that has been stomped on for years. >Historically, soul in guitar playing has been identified with slow playing. > I have always maintained that the speed of notes or technical proficiency >has nothing to do with soul. JP is a great example. Another great example >is Tony MacAlpine.

Well, The people he listed (Steve Vai and Richie Kotzen) are typically known for their Technical Proficiency. Their soul doesn't exist in only the slow playing. JP is not soul-less... he just sometimes comes out a bit dry. If you own the JP instructional video, watch the "live" out takes in between segments.... that's easily the most soulful guitar playing I've ever seen him do. I wish DT would release that stuff.

    >I didn't realize he had classical training. My understanding is he was >pretty much self taught until Berklee. I believe his training at Berklee >was more Rock/Jazz. If he has any classical training, I can't hear it and >I have several years of classical guitar training.

Duder, JP claims two of his big influences are Yngwie and DiMeola. Yngwie is the preeminent Neo Classical guitarist. DiMeola would convey a serious interest in Jazz (and PAIN if he plays much of Al's stuff!) so I think it's a little of both. I have never heard of JP doing any real classical guitar stuff (Don't EVEN say the Killing Hand.... cool intro.... NOT classical) but he's done TONS of Neo Classical sounding stuff, if you have the bootlegs and things. I know Neo Classical and classical are not the same thing, but sound-wise, if not simply name-wise, you can hear one to be a derivative of the other.

    >>player by training. Of course I'm comparing him to SRV and Hendrix. > >Why? You are comparing two completely different forms of music. If you >want to listen to a great progressive metal guitarist listen to JP. If you >want to listen to a great blues player listen to SRV. If you want to >listen to an overrated guitar player play out of tune listen to Hendrix. >(Fire away!!!)

    ROFL

    > Personally I hate comparing guitarists, it is not a >competition, it is art.

According to your summation of Hendrix, this statement would appear not to be true. Your conclusion was based on SOME comparison.

    >>there is little in the way of "soul." It seems written out and rehearsed > >You really need to listen to some other live recordings during this period. > The chord progression is definitely written out and rehearsed but the solo >is not.

Well... this is a debatable topic. A lot of DT's "Jams" sound like they were rehearsed to me. I REFUSE however to devalue them as such. They may not be fully improvised, but I can appreciate the music and the open quality. They are still playing off each other's dynamics and inflections.

    >>there is always something to work on, to make better. In JP's case, I >>think he can work on changing things up and work on his blues/soul

IMO, JP should do whatever the hell it is that makes him JP and not SRV, Hendrix, or Vai. He's found his sound... it's up to HIM to take it where it should go. Until we have achieved that goal ourselves, we can't exactly give advice on what he should do. But for the record, there's obviously been some effort in the "Bluesy" feel... I&W had NOTHING bluesy about it.... but listen to Scarred and Voices.... tell me you don't think he's put some effort into this?

Again... I think we're putting these guys up on too high a pedestal. I'd hate to have people that listen to my music expect me to conquer a whole new style of music over the course of a year or two. While touring must be great to get your solos down perfect, something tells me you don't have buttloads of time to work on new avenues of style.

I went to the Danbury, CT, clinic, and finally have time to write to the 'jam.

    Several points:

o Mike P. says "Hi." (He did say that he reads all the 'jams, but told me that it should not influence what we write. "Just pretend we're not here" he said.)

o The clinic itself was great. To all the musicians on the 'jam, take advantage of these. I'm guessing the clinic schedule compares to a regular tour schedule, and for them to go out and give their effort each night teaching and answering questions is something.

o The new songs sound great. There's been enough discussion on them already, so no further info from me here.

Anybody going to Toad's on Dec. 6th, I'll be 'jamming there with ya!

And Mike, I forgot to ask you last night (per the Modern Drummer format), "What drummers do you personally listen to for inspiration?" Oh well, I can wait till you're featured in MD for this answer!

    Jammers-

I must simply agree wholeheartedly (is that possible?) with the observation of John Parmet regarding the little part in ACOS before the verses. I've always felt that that tiny 3 or 4 note transition to the upper octave was/is amazingly expressive, as well as illustrating JP's generally plethora of "soul."

this is true, they are indeed a heavy band. for my 2 cents if you dont like glam music dont go looking for their releases when they owned stock in a hairspray company. however if you enjoy music that literally feels like a ton of bricks, listen to it and enjoy it, who cares if they were glammy then, that was then this is now.

A lot of DT's "Jams" sound like they >were rehearsed to me. I REFUSE however to devalue them as such. They may >not be fully improvised, but I can appreciate the music and the open >quality. They are still playing off each other's dynamics and inflections.

They sound like that because mostly the basic chord structure is thought out beforehand..but Jp or Derek can jam around it like they want to (i say derek cuz i mostly mean the jams after TTT and Lsoad on diffrent Awake boots) but in the I&W era..if you listen to JP's solo on Tlf,its a whole diffrent thing than what he does on the version in WDATU, or other versions..the chords are basically the same as on the song..but he solos around it.. i wouldnt go as far as saying that theyre not improvised but at least they must go " ok we go this this this and that"..then off to this this and that" as far as chords go or something.. so that makes it thought out..but not UNimprovised.Theres a big difrence there... like on Bombay Vindaloo, the way it is structured sounds VERY improvised since its basically 3 chords w/ all the thingies put on top...unlike the jams after TTT and such which sound a little bit more thought out.... Sorry for the bandwith..
