I got a cool idea - How about this question?

If you could make a music video for any Dream Theater song, which
one would it be, and how would you do it?

Personally, I would love to see a Metropolis video (who wouldn't?)
It could be directed by Jonathan Landis and be a short mini movie. They
could use computer graphics mixed with live actors, acting out the story of
the song. When "death the first dance eternal" is released, they could
maybe have a big bomb drop and a bunch of people would die. Then, with
deceit, I don't know, people fighting and lying to each other or something.
Then comes the big bang...the instrumental portion. It goes through
real quick shots of random people. Then it starts showing dead bodies.
Then, the music pauses somewhere in the midddle there. Then we hear Raymond
Burr's voice do a little "rap". After that, the music begins again, and all
the dead bodies rise, and, led by Michael Jackson dressed in the little
girls dress (from the I&W cover) dance, moonwalk, and jive along on the
streets of Toronto. If Michael Jackson really is the best dancer, he will
be able to come up with something for those 534/11 time sigs.
Then the grand finale. James starts singing again. God (played by
John Petrucci) (who else?) releases love on the city. I'm still trying to
re-work that part to make it cool. :) Possibly it starts snowing and
everyone starts playing hockey! Oh wait, they aren't in heaven yet!! Sorry
    :)

Another possibility would be "Learning to Live", and spoof the video
Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen. James could dress real
thickly and walk through Philly, breathing cold air. I remember hearing LtL
is about a dude with AIDS, right? If they made this video, it would
probably win all the grammies in the house.

If they want to win an MTV music award, do a video for Erotomania.
Who gives a shit what the video is like, but hey, with a title like that,
    it's destined for success!

That's all I could come up with. Remember, Ken Griffey in '96!

    Thank God! (a.k.a. John Petrucci)
I thought I'd been afronted by the ultimate server sin! I
though my local server had banned me from the Jam. I was pondering
suicide, but it came back up today (whew!). Anyway...

    ><gasp> Hell no! :) Top of the line Jacksons are cool, but I like Ibanez

No kiddin' I like Jacksons alot. In fact, my friend bought a
Profeesional, somekind or another, and I fell in love with it until I
played his brothers EX (back when EX's were still cool). I was
hooked on Ibanez ever since (obviously).

(Jus' kiddin about the suicide thing, but this jam is too damn cool!)

I WAS READING MY new Modern Drummer (with Lars Ulrich....interesting
article), and in the back they always have CD reviews. Well, there was a
review of a certain 5 disc Progressive Rock Era set. Called "Mythological
Tales of Stuff or Something Like That". Said it contained bands such as Yes,
ELP, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, early Genesis etc...just thought I'd let ya

    >good enough reason?

Lars U. adressed that issue (quite well) in that drummer mag I mentioned
earlier. He was talking about how before alternagrunge, metal music was a
race to see who could play the fastest guitar solo with the most notes in
it, and for the people who had lots of emotion to put out through music, but
couldn't get good at guitar, that sucked. Then came along Mr. Cobain. He
couldn't play guitar, and he knew it.....but he ALSO knew what message he
wanted to put in his music, and the four chords he needed to put it there.
That plus decent lyrics equalled large success, and simple songwriting and
image bumped out pure talent for the money making recipe. I mean come
on....I doubt that there are many people who weren't at leat MILDLY amused
by "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I STILL like that song. :)

    >I'm sorry about this Ben, but the Best ending is Only a Matter of Time, and

I disagree. It drags out a little too long for me. It is up there in the top
    ten, though. :)

    This next Visual Music (#2) isn't a melody...it's a sound effect in a DT

Savatage's Live in Japan is great, but the best is the video. However it is
quite expensive to get a legit release of it ($65 -$80).

Who ever trades you will be getting a hell of a deal. Streets should be
available just about everywhere. If you are having problems finding it,
check your local Best Buy, Borders, Wherehouse , ....

If they don't have it dop me a line we can probably work something out.

    Jammers,

With in the last month I have been fortunate enough to see Tony MacAlpine
twice at the Mason Jar here in Phoenix, AZ. For those of you not familar with
his work he is an excellent guitarist and pianist/keyboard player and has
release a number of records on the Shrapnel label. He also played keys on
    Vinnie Moore's Mind's Eye.

Needless to say he is a quite accomplished musician and is absolutely
    incredible live.

The set contained mostly songs off of Tony's Maximium Security Cd as well as
his latest project Violent Machine. For those interested in his latest work,
    I definately recommend it.
     Write to :
            Metropolis Records
            P.O. Box 9446
            North Hollywood, CA 91609-1446

Tony has to incredible musicians in his band. First is Mike Terrana who has
played drums on three MacAlpine albums (Freedom to Fly, Evolution, and Violent
Machine) other drummers that Tony has worked with include Dean Castranovo,
Atma Anur, and Glen Sobel. Mike Terrana's abilities definately fit in with
that group. I was quite impressed by his technical ability and speed behind
the drums. He would probably give Mike Portnoy a run for his money!!! For more
info on Mike check out :

              http://www.terrana.com

Kevin Chown is on bass. Again here is another excellent musician. Kevin plays
a six string bass. Kevin was honored as Solist of the Year at the
Montreaux-Detriot Jazz Festival in 1993, and is the only bassist to recieve
this award. His talents can be seen on his solo release Freudian Slip. Kevin
also plays for a band which has toured with Dream Theater. Edwin Dare toured
with Dream Theater before Images and Words got into the spot light. Edwin
Dare's release Can't Breakme is very compatible with the Dream Theaterish
style, although a little more straight forward rock, but definately
progessive. For more info on that send mail to : EDINDARE@aol.com
aslo check out the following web pages.

            http://www.in-orbit.com/guitarzone/macalpine.html

I am sorry if this sounds like an ad for these guys, but I figured I would
pass on the names of a few great musicians to fellow DT fans that I feel could
    appreciate their talents.

Neil asked the following in Ytsejam #1893:

    >I know my subject sounds like an oxymoron (rapidly becoming the most popular >word on the Jam),

Hey, didn't I start this trend? :) Anyhow, I think whether it is an oxymoron depends on your state of marital bliss (or lack thereof).

    >I know some of you people out there are married (or are planning to do so, >or are living in sin with concubines etc. etc.), and I was wondering whether >any of you have problems with your spouses/lovers/live-in dildo replacements >because of the music you like to listen to.

I won't say problems, just annoyances. My tastes are extremely broad, but Keith is pretty much just into modern jazz, New Age, metal, and prog. He'll tease when I play something he finds distasteful, but he figures it makes me happy so it's not worth a big scene.

Sometimes, couples even find new musical horizons together. Many of you know that it was my sweetie that introduced me to Dream Theater, but I've been the one to bring home Savatage, Marillion, Echolyn, and so on.

    >But honestly, I would really be interested to know whether you have to take >other people into account when you play music

I think that two people really into each other learn to "not sweat the small stuff." In the scheme of things, which is more important: shared musical tastes or shared ideologies?

You know, I am reading more and more and hearing more and more about who can't make it to the con. This is disturbing. Next thing you know, I will be the one and only person at the con. This would be disappointing, even if DT showed up. All the guys I talk to on IRC are backing out as if there was going to be a bombing at the hotel and nobody tells the blind guy about it because they want to eliminate him from the earth so he will stop posting useless shit like this on the Jam. Hmmmm. paranoid maybe? Nah. Anyway, what irc jammers are still going to this thing? Have I really scared you all off? If I said I wasn't going, would you all suddenly find time, money, and transportation and go? come on, if Mike Bahr can come from across the country, then why can't the rest of you? This of course assumes that Mike didn't catch wind that I was going to be at the con and suddenly decide that the bootleg investigation found his ass and locked him up.
