Phew...the flames earlier this week were nicely fanned (and some
actually quite funny :) ). There was a point about the later Rush
,1980's, as being 'not-as-good' as their earlier stuff. My
collection consists of only MP upwards, and though I've tried
some of the pre-80's stuff I couldn't wrap my head around
    Geddy's high-vocals and the muddy/muffled production sound. A
good reason for this is that my first Rush album was HYF, and
this has been my 'reference point' for the definitive sound of
Rush. Does this happen for you guys and other bands with
    established histories?

    And I reply:

HYF was my first Rush album, too (though I'd been hearing the other
stuff on the radio). I think MP or Archives (2 LP/tape of the first
three albums) were my next... I just started skipping around *especially*
after Presto came out (because I was majorly dissapointed). p/g turned
out to be the last Rush album I bought, probably two years after I
first started. I have no era of preference. I think it depends on the
person. Incidentally, HYF is still my favorite Rush album though I
think that MP and PeW are better all around.

Please, people, have mercy on me. I'll ask again. How does a stupid-ass
get on the VH mailing list? And any other shed (maybe Shrapnel?)
guitarist's mailing lists? Bless me with a fountain of e-mail knowledge.

Some things I wanted to respond to. I read in the local newspaper today
that the VH/DLR thing is totally over. Dave seems to think it was all a
publicity stunt because Gary Cherone and Eddie VH have been working
together for the past 3 months, and he is (according to the paper) the
new singer for VH. Again...this is what I read in the paper, so if I'm
wrong...not my fault. Second...why don't start a new list just for this
    RUDD guy! ;)

Okay who would be the most likely member of DT to show up at the
Ytsecon? I would say Mike Portnoy wouldn't you? Well I looked on the
official DT page under the tour dates section which gives all of
Portnoy's drum clinic dates. Well it seems that on October 12th (the
day of the Ytsecon) Mike is going to be giving a clinic in California!
This doesn't bode well for the Ytsecon. If all else failed I was
counting on Mike being there. I am having second thoughts about
having spent all that money to fly in from Wisconsin. Sue me but I
wanted to meet more than jammers I was looking forward to some members
    of the band.

Anyway just thought I would let people know this. See you all at the
    Ytsecon anyway.

    Hey

Sombody mentioned a band named Clockwork playing at a club in October.
This is not the same CLOCKWORK that you jammers have heard of. We are based in
the Philadelphia, PA area. If any of you know this band or are going to the
show we'd appreciate very much if you could inform them that our trademark on
    the name is pending.

    Well,
I really didn't start listening to any sort of music until about
4 years ago, so my tastes have grown up with the 90's. Most of the
albums that started me into the bands were ones like Empire,
Counterparts, and Handful of Rain. I&W was luckily my introduction
to DT. I dunno if WDADU would have caught my attention like I&W did
because of the poorer production quality. Likely, I would have
dissed DT ever after... That would've sucked!

By the way, I read ina post here that somebody thinks the weenie song is
cheesey? What? You're nuts. That song is hysterically funny, the sound
effects are cool. so what, there's no music and the song itself is childish.
That's the point. It's meant to be immature and funny. And I love it.

I want to thank the person responsible for making the DT theme for
Win95. It's awesome. My brother (NOT a DT fan) loves the wallpaper and
the sounds and he allowed me to set it up on the family computer, yeah!
Now I just need to find something that my other 17 classmates will like
so it can stay on the studio computer instead of the image being
    changed all the time.

BTW did anyone write to DT, the design company asking for any info?

    Whats up guys,

My second radio show as a student DJ for the College of Mount St.
Vincent (Riverdale, Bronx NY) went a lot smoother than my first. I
have settled into a format in which I will play songs.

    1) My first song of the show each week will be an epic!! (Its a lot
easier to settle in when you have 20 minutes to get your shit
together!)..I wanna make the show as progressive as possible and there's
no better way than to just hit 'em in the face right off the bat!

    2) My second song will ALWAYS be a FATES WARNING tune....no ifs, ands
or buts about it..they rule and it has to be done!!

    3) After the short news break I like to play a double shot consisting
of an instrumental and a regular song.

    4) IRON MAIDEN is a requirement!! I would be denying my very
existence if I did not pay this monumental band homage every week! They
are the gods of the thunderous gallops!! I gotta find a marble bust of
Steve Harris for the radio studio!

anyhow, here is my setlist for week #2.....

    RUSH: "Xanadu"
    FATES WARNING: "The Arena"
    STRATOVARIUS: "Lord of the Wasteland"
    SAVATAGE: "Gutter Ballet"
VIPER: "A Cry From the Edge"
    YNGWIE MALMSTEEN: "Disciples of Hell"
    MANOWAR: "Ride the Dragon"
THOUGHT INDUSTRY: "Blistered Text and Bleeding Pens"

    ---(news break---

    IRON MAIDEN: "Genghis Khan"
    IRON MAIDEN: "Killers"
    HELLOWEEN: "March of Time"
    KING DIAMOND: "The Family Ghost"
GAMMA RAY: "Tribute to the Past"
    TAD MOROSE: "Fading Pictures"
    MASTERMIND: "Long Distance Love Affair"
    LEVIATHAN: "Confidence Not Arrogance"
ANGRA: "Painkiller" <-- (Judas Priest Tribute Vol. II)
    RUNNING WILD: "Riding the Storm"

I like to have a small promotional giveaway kind of thing (a free pack
of gum!) if anyone can answer my question but it looks like I'll never
    get a correct answer :-(
I asked if any student knew who the original vocalist for FATES
WARNING was?? No one called up! I think an easier question would have
been who Kurt Cobain's great-great-great-grandfather was! Well, hope
this list gets you people into more of these bands and more great music!

    cheers,
        Carlo

By the way for those of you who dont get the fanzine I&W(youre missing out!) the lyric credits for the first 8 songs go: JPx4 MPx2 KJLX2 It says JM had lyrics for a song (possibly 1 of 2 new ones) + Derek had written all music for Anna Lee. Hi folks,

I went down to the local record shops and found:

    I Mother Earth DIG -93

all I knew about this band is that they toured with DT on the Awake-tour, so I gave them a listen. Do you know if this is there only CD? To me it their sound was quite hard to categorize. Some parts were really funky, while other were more hard core metal. Can't say I really liked it, though. There were quite a lot of people in the store, so I just gave them a short try, but even though it just costed 60 SEK ( $ 8) ( used) I didn't buy it. If I change my mind, I know it will always be there, because in Trollha:ttan I'm all alone listening to DT-related stuff, (I miss you so...).

    Galactic Cowboys Machine Fish -96

First I thought that this was brand new stuff, than I realized it was from January, so perhaps it's already discussed here. I was so disappointed! I love the space-stuff -91, but this one had nothing of chorus-singing, and was just plain mainstream heavy music to me. sorry if I tread on a your toes!

    Otrah Morningrise -96

The label said: Extremely progressive metal. 5 songs sums up to over one hour with these swedish gods. That sounded interesting! All songs are more than 10 min, and they were all very epic, and This is great!, I was thinking, until the "singer" started. He directly made King Diamond sound like Julio Iglesias! Too bad!, because they sound good musically. Like a very metallish Anekdoten ( that is a very good grade!), still perhaps a bit too fast for me, but I could live with that, because their slower, more epic parts really got to my heart. And I was extremely surprised when I heard the last one. It was slow, with good vocals. Some sort of a love-song, still heavy. Is there something called accoustic-doom? Will fit. Please listen to them, if you have a chance. I am still too puzzled to know if I'll spend $ 20 on them.

    Letterman

I've noticed that you talk a lot about the DLetterman-show. Why is that? We can see it here in Sweden as well, but I think nobody does, I haven't heard anyone comment on it. Is he really big/important over there?

To me it sounds very strange that you guys give flames upon person that calls Rush, Marillion, Nirvana, PearlJam progressive/alternative/sell-outs , if you stick to that kind of program Letterman gives. That, to me, is the most commercial TV-show you can imagine. OK! Go ahead ,flame me. I can take it!

If you really are into progressive culture you should be reading the Nobel-prize-winners. Them to me are the least commercial creators upon earth. and do avoid movie-stars as well...

Just don't get me wrong. I've never tried any Nobel-prize winner, and I guess I never will, and I too like basic films once in a while, and plain TV-shows, going to discos, or other normal stuff. Just don't think that your way of thinking is the better one all the time. I do consider a person that loves Green Day and say Salvador Dali , interesting. He just has another form expressing his "progressive"-vein.

(I'll increase DT-content until next time) All for now/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Henrik Gustafsson Quality deployer
