So, what's the deal, everyone? Power Windows is definitely playing
Saturday night. They're absolutely fantastic. Like seeing Rush play a
rarities show for $5. But if there is actually going to be an Ethyl
Mertz gig that night, I assume most people will be there instead.

Anyway, I figure the best way for a lot of us to meet up would be at the
hotel, in the room of someone that has a room there. I can probably get
there by 7:00, so we can grab some Taco Bell and head out to whatever
show we want to see. Someone volunteer to be a meeting point, and then
whoever's going to the same place, we can all meet up there. Sound good?

    See ya next week!

For all of you who are complaining about DT not going to the Con, read
the subject line. There has been a chance all the way from the beginning
that the band may not make it, no one ever said that they would
definately be there. Jeff's original posts were a bit misleading, yes,
but we did change that and tried to make people understand that there has
always been the chance of DT not going. But the thing is, that was never
what the Con was about in the first place. YtseCon II went off without
the band. Yes, people did get ticked off that the band wasn't there, but
again, it's not about the band, it's about the people who like the band.
Someone was complaining about spending $130 for airfare to get there. My
ticket cost me $260. My girlfriend's cost her $230. We're both spending
about $600 each on this trip, both knowing all along that DT may not be
there. Charone is coming in from CA at about the same cost, knowing the
band may not be there. Mike Bahr as far as I know has been to all of the
Cons and will again be at this one, and he knew the band may not be there.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't be upset. I will be a little
dissapointed if the band doesn't show either. If they came, I had an
interview with them, and could possibly edge my way backstage on the next
tour. If they don't, the IV is out, and I'll be hard pressed to meet
them in person at the next StL show. But the thing is, there was never
any guarantee that they would show. Everyone I talked to about the Con,
I told to plan as if they *wouldn't* be there, and you won't be
    dissapointed.

The thing is, there is still a chance of some of them showing up. I
don't know all the details of their lives right now, but the only one
I've heard definately can't make it is Mike, because he's in CA. Derek
is still in NY now. He and Jeff talk on a semi-regular basis, and
there's still a chance that he may show. Also, no one has ruled out the
other 3 just yet either. But look at it this way. We are (or if we
aren't, we *should* be) going to the Con to meet each other. To put a
face with the online personality. To trade stories in person. To trade
bootlegs and find out that Mike Bahr is really just a normal guy with a
great passion for what he does. To start fist fights in the hotel
parking lot with people that post stuff we don't like to the list (just
joking. :). The point is, it's about the fans, not the band. If the
band show up, it will be great, we may hear some new music, we may get
some useful info, and mostly we'll be able to hang out with some of the
best musicians working today. And if they don't go, there will still be
a lot of people and a lot of things to do. For God's sake, we're in NY.
If you can't find something you like in NY, then you may as well stay
home in bed. It's one of the most diverse cities in the word, and there
    is literally something for everyone.

I'm sure by now you're all thinking that I'm just pushing for people to
go so I can make money on shirts. I've getting orders through the mail,
and I'm sure most of the people at the Con will buy one, but I'm not in
this for money. I picked the shirts up in St.Louis yesterday, and I have
had offers from 3 people already that don't even know who the hell Dream
Theater is to buy a shirt, just because of the design. That's $48 I
could have made, but I didn't sell them, and why? It's not about the
money, it's about the band. I'm not going to sell it to someone who
isn't going to wear it for the band. I'll admit that if I don't sell off
all the shirts, I'm going to be in debt both to the print shop, and to my
friend who lent me the down payment, but that was a risk I was willing to
take from the beginning. Thanks to all of you who have ordered so far,
and those that plan to order soon or buy one at the Con. You are the
people who are going to save my ass. But I'm not going to offer up these
shirts just to make money or even to pay back the money I owe, they were
done for the mailing list, and that's where I intend to keep them.

For those of you worried that I'm out to screw you over, don't. You'll
know in two or three weeks when the people who have already ordered get
their shirts. Hopefully then I'll get a bit more response.

There is just one other thing I want you to concider before those of you
going to the Con pull out, or those of you undecided ditch the idea. And
that is Jeff Chew, and the rest of the staff that has been working hard
to make this convention happen in the first place. This has not been
easy, nor has it been cheap, and at this point we have about half of the
ticket sales to the Con that we would actually need to cover our own
costs so far. Jeff Chew is a damn nice guy. Trust me, I have hung out
with him before. If I'm not mistaken I shot him once or twice in Q-Zar
(Jeff, which team were you on again?). I don't want to see Jeff get
screwed in this deal. We are talking about a sizable sum of money here,
and the staff will do our best to help him out in the event that ticket
sales don't cover costs, but in the end, it's those sales that will help
him out the most, so if you can make it, please do, it will be a good
time with our without the band.

And whatever you decide, DO NOT hold Jeff responsible for what happens
with the band. Jeff has no control over their schedules any more than he
has control over the weather next weekend. Mike can't make it. Mike is
teaching people like you and me how to be a better drummer, and he's
doing it because he's a nice guy, not because Jeff asked him to. Derek
is still up in NY and could still make the Con if he's free, but again
Jeff can't control that. We may not even know until he shows up at the
door if he can make it or not. Jeff is a nice guy and I don't want to
see his reputation smeared on the 'jam because of an event which was out
of his hands to begin with. If the band can't make it, we'll live, we'll
keep the Con rolling, we'll still have live music and prog CDs and talks
and trades and sales, and post-Con get togethers. All in all, the Con
will be fun if the band is there or not. So if you planned to go, go.
If you want to go, go. If you're in the area and don't have anything to
do for 4 hours, drop on by, they will be selling tickets at the doors.
But don't think that just because the band's not there that it's not a
Con. This is the Ytsejam Internet Mailing List Convention. I don't see
anything in that title that says Dream Theater will be there. It's about
the people that make this list what it is on a day to day basis, and
that's what you should concider when you make you decisions to go or not
    to go.

I understand the people who were upset because they based their decision
on the thought that the band will be there. Hell, that thought still
isn't dead until we hear from ALL of the band members and not just Mike.
But please, don't go flamming Jeff or flamming the 'jam and discouraging
other people by saying the Con will suck without the band. There are
thing in life that can't be avoided, and this may just be one of them.
Go with the flow and give Jeff and the rest of the staff a break. Go to
the Con, lessen the burden on some of the greatest guys you will ever
meet. Do your part to make this happen, because the Con will be a
success with or without the band, but it won't be a success without you.

One of the new songs is supposedly called

    >> Trial of Tears (12:30)

Is this a typo? Is it supposed to be TRAIL of Tears (like the Cherokee
Indians deal), or is this correct? Trial of Tears sounds pretty cool, though.

    Hey Jammers-

My name is Charlie (a.k.a. The Ytse-Rook, now I'm the 'Perfect Stranger' - get it? =) I was on the list last year and now that school is in again, I had to rejoin. I really got into WDADU this summer...a lot of people said how bad Charlie's voice was and actually I kinda like it. Is he doing anything new? Also, what did Winter Rose sound like? Was it cool? One more question, what ever happened to the band 'Majesty'? (Not DT, but the band that had the name first) Are THEY cool? As you can see, I'm trying to branch off of my favorite band (DT) and get into some different stuff. A friend recommended Braindance to me, and they look really cool too from the looks of the ad he gave me. I've heard they are like DT with longer samples. Is this true? Sorry for rambling...I'm glad to be back aboard!

    Perfect Stranger

P.S. If any of the jammers are into jazz, I saw an awesome performance at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago. It was latin jazz fusion, and the name of the up-and-coming saxophonist is David Sanchez. It was literally amazing.

P.S. Is Neil Gallop still on this list? Drop me a line if you still remember me dude!

let's review sometihng. What is the purpose of the con? To meet jammers or Dream Theater? Both? I mean, I thought it was to hang out with the people we've been having a screen to screen relationship with and DT being there would make it a bonus. I don't know if the con immediately implies DT being there. let's discuss the purpose of the ytsecon as an event.

    Hi all

I was just listening to the version of "To Live Forever" on 'Lords of Sound', and as some of you may know, there is a drum solo at the end of the track. At the risk of getting my butt reduced to a heap of ashes, this track inspired me to ask the following question:

Is there anybody else out there in Ytseland who finds drum solos boring? I've seen and heard loads of them in my time, and although most of them have some interesting bits in them, I always find that they get boring at some stage.

So, what else is new? Because Kamelot have dropped out, I'll be getting to see Superior and Angra in a couple of weeks. Also, now that the end of the year is steadily drawing closer, I think it's time to start thinking about some sort of 'Ytsejam Album Of The Year' survey. What I have in mind is that you can name upto 5 albums (in order of preference) that have been released this year and then send these lists to me. I will then collate them and send the resultant big list back to the jam. Let me know what you think. I was toying with the idea of opening the voting sometime at the end of November and sending the results out mid-December, so that all you college kids get the results before you go home for another well-earned break. If enough of you are interested, I'll post more details in a month or so. (I'm already willing to bet that Rush will come in the top 5).

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de)

I saw the two new song titles -which I didn't expect-. This makes me think: there were 73 minutes of music, and now there are 92... and it would seem they have enough time and energy to make three songs or more (and they still haven't done Metropolis, part II).

I went to bed last night, thinking about this, and dreamt about it: I was on this music store, and got my hands on the "newest Dream Theater CD", as the clerk put it: a double CD with 120 minutes of music! I just hope this dream turns out to be true (and no, I didn't check out the song titles - silly me).
