    Hi guys :-)

    Here is a FAQ:

Why did James LaBrie leave the stage at one of the England shows leaving
Mike to sing the end of Surrounded?

Here is the FGA (Frequently Given Answer):

Because a drunk guy in the audience kept shouting out during the quiet
parts of the song. James repeatedly asked him to be quiet, but he refused.
James lost his temper and left the stage. I know someone who was actually
there, and he said that James actually jumped into the crowd to go after
the guy, but this is entirely unverified ;-)

Wanna stick this in the FAQ, Chris?

OK, someone posted saying that a certain Graham B. had recommended
Ozric Tentacles. Well, I have never even *heard* of Ozric Tentacles,
let alone recommended them to anyone! Could there be another Graham B.
    on the Jam?

Well, bugger me! There is another Graham B. on the Jam. Hi, bud ;-)

This could be confusing. See you all soon :-)

The Scottish (not Australian) Graham B.

What tracks did he do for "Working Man" - a couple of year's ago
the band did a cover of "What You're Doing" (?) for their ep. He is a
    helluva frontman!!!

"Subhuman Race" is their worst album by far. Actually Sebastian
doesn't do much singing at all on this album. This guy has a really good
voice - it's just a pity he doesn't use it on this album. This album has
that shitty grunge sound on too many songs - maybe that's why he doesn't
    sing like he used to!

            See ya - Brenden

Sorry for the NDTC, but here it goes...

For those who love Marillion (especially Steve Rothery) and female
vocals, pick up "Carnival Of Souls" by "The Wishing Tree"... It's
Steve Rothery's side-project (along with Pete Trewavas) and features
a *beautiful* girl with an equally beautiful voice, Hannah Stobart, on
vocals. It doesn't 'kick ass', but if you're interested in beautiful,
    mostly laid-back, prog-music you'll probably love this album... I do :->

    Guess that's it for now...

It looks more & more like the rumors are true. Just let us hope & pray
that Gary will be given the same creative latitude that he had in
Extreme, that he won't be stifled by the banality of VH's past. That
Gary will give us some meat and not the VH pabulum of the past. Also
    that Nuno won't get lost in the shuffle, he's one 7734 of a guitar god;
I personally like his style more than VH.

Sorry no DTC, but I know there are alot of Extreme & VH adherents on the

Amen to what Pat said... the con will be a blast whether or not DT
    is there!!

There is NO BETTER way to not only make a pile of new friends and
learn a ton of great shit about the band, but to trade or buy or sell DT
memorabilia and similar stuff. I missed Con 1 because I was busy doing the
Cygnus print run, but I really regret missing it. Con 2 was a blast, band
or no band. And Derek still might show. I've had management confirm that
Mike and John Myung CANNOT be there.. Myung will be out of the area with
his family and Mike in California. But James will actually be in town this
weekend, and Derek and John Petrucci could be there too. But don't count
on it, and don't sweat it if they don't.

Oh yeah, Pat: all my friends want the DT shirt, they're all major
fans. Save like eight of them for me OK?

D-Man: I e-mailed you about this too, but this is for everyone! I
have a room with 2 beds, and only 1 occupant (my traveling companions
couldn't make it). Anyone want to split the cost of Saturday night
lodging? Make it cheap for ya...

Jeff: Thanks a TON for putting this together. It WILL be
worthwhile, I think most of us will see to that. I hope someone brings
instruments so us musical people can jam out.

EVERYONE!! I will have a TON of great stuff there for you all! LIE
Singles. Antiquities, WDATU, Scenes, Cygnus, Inside The Storm, Critical
Mass, maybe even a Subconscious and Acoustic Dreams, since one of my
friends is thinking of letting me sell his off. DT memorabilia, signed
stuff, etc. I will buy, sell, AND trade as time and funds allow. You
should all bring your Dt stuff that you can trade or sell or buy, I'm sure
I'm not the only one who would like to exchange things. The top priority
on my "want" list is the 3" Tears disc from Japan. I might also have
preview discs of The Wrath of God and... drumroll... Precious Things
prototypes!! This is depending if I can get them done this week without
    too much panic.

Join the DT fan club NOW. I can't say why, but you'll be sorry if
you don't within the next few weeks. I guarantee that. Trust me everyone.
I have nothing to do with this event, but you'll want to get it.

            Take it easy everyone!

Boy oh boy, did I buy two ass-kickin'-good discs. First Braindance came on Saturday (as I already wrote). Then today I got Spock's Beard!!!! Holy shit!!! These guys are amazing!

They're really tough to describe, but I'll try. First of all, the CD has 4 songs and is 57 minutes long. :) Track 1 is an epic in 8 parts, and Track 3 is an epic in 7 parts. Yum. The two major guys in the band are brothers, and both seem to be amazing, phenomenal keyboard players. (Mmm, I love Mellotron.) Also, one brother is a great singer and the other is a great lead guitarist.

There are many similarities to echolyn to be drawn. Heavy prog riffs lead into airy, melodic, poppy/jazzy segments. Great vocal harmonies. Prominent bass. Great lyrics. The opening track "The Light" )the title track) is really cool - there are four or five different musical styles (even Flamenco!) employed to express the same theme.

Great production. Very natural. It sounds like you're in their living room while they're jamming. Very un-pretentious.

They really know how to mix up musical styles to keep everything sounding fresh. They're great at jazz, they're great at happy pop rock, they're great at prog. And they're great at combining them. Go buy this. Now. Come on! Close e-mail, and go get this disc!

Hey, was anyone else reminded of that little kid with braces from the movie "Goonies" when Pat gave his speech? Heh heh heh. But really, he's right. I couldn't go because I spent my vacation in Hollywood helping a friend move in and learn the town (He's too introverted to go explore solo, and I wanted to see Hollywood... flew in from Chicago). Otherwise I would be there. I also have school and work and stuff now. Personally, I wouldn't care if DT showed or not. I mean... it would be cool if they would play a show, but that's way on the unlikely side. They'd probably want to just hang out... and I get the feeling you'd run out of things to talk about REAL quick.

Oh well. It's gonna be a fun time, and of course I'm gonna miss it. Maybe we'll get that damn Midwest Con going. We can host it at my house, or if we get enough people we'll rent a hall. Yeah... that's the ticket... midwest con.... yeah...

Hello all. Been in Cincinnati (actually, Norwood, for those knowledgable about the geogrphy of southwest Ohio) the last week on business, so I come back to a dozen plus Jams. Ugly. Anyhow, I'm about half-way through and figured I'd start commenting.

    >From: "Kevin W. Madden" <kwmadden@pipeline.com> > >Mentioning fade-outs reminds me of old Dio. Every one of his songs >used to fade out. And how about "Blood Red Skies" by Judas Priest? >They cut off Halford in mid-verse! The cd cover has lyrics which are >never sung. That sucks. Another cool fade-out was on Lizzy Borden's >"Master of Disguise" album, which I would recommend to fans of groups >like Savatage, etc, because it has that concept/prog vibe to it. I think >the song was "Master of Disguise" or "Under the Rose" or something. >This cd can be found in the cheap bin for a few dollars.

    and...

    >From: "Damon M. Fibraio" <s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu> > >...Anotther example of poorly >faded out songs is Different Strings on Permanent Waves from Rush. Fades out >right on the guitar solo, and it sounded like we should've heard more there, >doncha think? My philosophy is come up with an ending. Use fadeouts if you >have to on a studio song, because it's there and you can use it if you need >to, but don't fade out on somebody's solo, and for God's sakes, come up with >an ending live, because in my experience, the fadeouts live suck. E, I really >hope you were joking about that.

To me, a good musician will use the studio as a tool. I don't think a record necessarily HAS to sound like a live performance....basically, using it to enhance a tune is a perfectly legitimate function. My band used it a few times (and, yes, we ended the songs differently live) because it sounded GOOD. I don't think it's a cop-out, I think it's a legitimate artistic technique, like using the volume knob for swells. Sometimes it's just an effective compositional tool. Of course, Iron Maiden has a million tunes that end with that cool, end-of-concert flail, with the whole band going ballistic. Still, the examples above ("Blood Red Skies" and "Different Strings") actually work WELL for me -- I'd rather hear a fade out when the band is doing something than to wait until the solo's done and THEN made on some static piece of music.

    And some other assorted comments:

Got the Lemur Voice record. Good stuff, man! I mean, it's really prototypical contemporary prog metal, but it's really pulled off pretty well. Good writing and good sounds -- as a bassist, I was impressed with the role of the bass in the arrangements. And, as we've all acknowledged here, Marcel is awesome! I'll certainly recommend it.

Got the Vai record, as well. And, as skeptical as I was, I must say, Steve's an awfully strong singer. Surprised me, really. I haven't listened enough to fully digest it, but it's in my Top 10 for the year (in a year with a LOT of good music, that's saying something) -- somewhere between the new Rush record and the Tull record from earlier this year (which is praise coming from me).

The ELP/Jethro Tull show finally made it out west a couple weeks ago (I saw them at the Concord Pavillion -- I'm a Bay Area guy). Keith Emerson never ceases to amaze me. He was actually LESS agro than I'm used to, but still very cool. Ian Anderson's voice coulda been mixed better, but, on the whole, Tull was also QUITE impressive...."Dangerous Veils" sounded MUCH better than on "Roots To Branches."

Okay, I'm sure I'll have more to say after digging through a couple more digests, so I'll just shut up for the moment.

HEY! do i have your attention now? ;-) Everyone has been talking about how there aren't going to be any DT members at the ytsecon. Well I think DS will be there. He has been in NY for the past couple of months. And people who were talking to him at the People's Pub said that he would like to meet some of the fans asap. Also, why can't JM make it? As far as I know he doesn't have any clinics. He might teach people but that can't take up too much time. So, maybe MP and JP might not make it but DS has a good chance of making it and so does JM(if he ever leaves his house ;)).

Well, only a 6 or 5 days till the con(depending on when this gets posted)! Are we all going to try to cross the street or what? ;-)

I KNEW I'd have more to say....

    >From: fbarbosa@solar.com.br (Frederico Mello Simoes Barbosa) > >Well, I'm not ashamed of myself and I am no fool at all. I love RUSH, >but I have a very critical opinion about WHAT IS GOOD MUSIC. The difference >between you and me is that I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO HEAR. It doesn't >happen with you. You're so FANATIC RUSH FAN THAT EVERY RUSH RELEASE YOU SAY >IT'S GOOD ONLY BECAUSE IT'S A "RUSH" ALBUM. Where is your critical sense ? >Well, I think you have no brains at all...

The two of us have had a perfectly amicable discussion of other Prog in private e-mail, so I don't imagine this'll devolve into something ugly. I KNOW it's been a couple of days, but as a huge Rush fan, I thought I'd respond...

    >Everybody knows that RUSH was a PROGRESSIVE BAND in the 70's, but RUSH became a >COMMERCIAL BAND in the 80's. The same thing happened with YES and GENESIS >in the 80's. You may think I'm radical , but it's not true. >I listen to a lot of different music styles (Progressive, Metal, >Blues, Jazz, ...), but one thing I really can't stand is POP MUSIC. >I DON'T FORGIVE RUSH : THEY BETRAYED THE PROGRESSIVE MUSIC IDEAL. >They turned on a POP MUSIC STYLE, and sold out themselves. They >decided to make music to set RADIO STATIONS playlist and MTV.

Now, I'll admit to being a big Rush fan -- I'm into the band enough to have bought "Chronicles" on CD to get the two live songs...I've got all their record, a couple of boots, and so on. So yeah, I've been accused of not having an objective view of the band. I'll admit that other people may see it that way. I don't agree, though, with that assessment -- I'd say that I like the band BECAUSE of all of these elements, not vice versa.

Rush is STILL a progressive band. I don't see that they're really much of a "pop" band. They certainly didn't sell out at "Signals" to get played on the radio -- why switch up sounds so drastically when you've just experienced tremendous success, including heavy airplay on AOR stations. They certainly didn't make a move for MTV -- they were NEVER really on that much, and up until '85 or so, MTV just wasn't that big a deal. Now we've argued here and there and elsewhere about what progressive music actually IS -- I've found that most people seem to think long songs, in and of themselves, is sufficient. I disagree -- I would say it's about experimentation and skill. Aspriations to producing unique, powerful, and interesting music. Rush, I would say, still qualifies under that rubric. In fact, I'd say they qualify as much as any band working today under that rubric. So however you define a "Progressive Ideal," I'd say that you're missing the mark.

    >You know, they did not care about music quality, they were only interested in >making easy money. They wanted to become milionaire. I am not >a communist (and I will never be one), but I condemm this attitude. >And one reason I really love DREAM THEATER is because DT'S music >IS AS GOOD AS OLD PROGRESSIVE RUSH STYLE. And I hope DREAM THEATER >WILL NOT BECOME A COMMERCIAL BAND AS RUSH BECAME.

Rush didn't care about music quality? Think about this again. You're talking about Rush from "Signals" on....they've done several radical restructurings of a musical style that had proven immensely popular. I just don't see that as being "commercial."

    >>Just listen to SIGNALS, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, HOLD YOUR >>FIRE, POWER WINDOWS, PRESTO, and ROLL THE BONES!!! They are fucking >>AWESOME. > >They are fuckin' TRASH. I'd put them in a trash can. >An excelent RUSH album is something like "2112", "Hemispheres", >"Fly by Night". But I tell you what : "Conterparts" is a nice album. >And I dig "Test for Echo " !!!! :)))))

No. Couldn't agree less. "Hold Your Fire" for me, a hardcore Rush fan, is their best effort. I'd say "Hemispheres" is up there....maybe even their second best record. But "Hold Your Fire," "Roll The Bones," and "Counterparts" are tremendous records....as strong as "Hemispheres," "Permanent Waves," and "Moving Pictures."

    >>I mean just LISTEN to the keyboard backings and all around >>musical composition, and any idiot can see that it was a definite >>influence on DT. > >Well, I think I'm talking with a idiot in some place. It seems to me >you haven't read DT FAQ. DT Keyboard was inlfuenced by YES. >It seems to me you never listened to YES ALBUM, FRAGILLE, TALES >FROM TOPOGRAPHICS OCEANS, ...

Certainly the keyboard sound is heavily influences by Yes. I'd also point you at ELP, Marillion, and yes, Rush.

    >Well, generalizing is a very dangerous thing, I agree with you in this >statement. >Hey man, what do you think you are ? Are you really a PROGRESSIVE MUSIC FAN ??? >Or maybe you are a POP MUSIC FAN (which is not that bad at all....). >Well, SIGNALS, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, HOLD YOUR FIRE, POWER WINDOWS, PRESTO, >and ROLL THE BONES sounds to me like a crossover between U2 and THE POLICE >and I'm really not interested in those bands. I'm interested in PROGRESSIVE >MUSIC.

I'm certainly a Progressive fan. Even by the standards here -- I'm a fan of old Yes and Rush, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Watchtower, and Shadow Gallery, among others. I think my Prog credentials are in order. But, like the discussion on alt.music.progressive (now r.m.p) a year and a half ago or so, different people have different ideas about what is progressive....but I think I can put together a reasonable case for the last six or seven Rush records. Note that the Yes/Genesis/Anglagard/Pendragon contingent isn't particularly fond of Dream Theater, in general, either.

    >LONG LIVE PROGRESSIVE ROCK !!! >PROGRESSIVE ROCK WILL NEVER DIE !!!

Probably not....but it WILL evolve. Rock surely doesn't mean Elvis anymore.
