    Hiyis

I've been on the list for a couple of weeks now, but I thought I'd finally
let you all know that I'm here (not that you'd prolly care either way, but
    still...)

I've been a fan of DT for a few months (I first bought ACOS, then LATM, then
I&W, then WDADU, then A (why can't we have an acronym for Awake as well?))
and I think they are, of course, a brilliant band. I don't know anyone in
the flesh who is a fan, but I think I'm *very* gradually caving my brother
in to liking them - I caught him singing along to 'Take the Time' on the
Live in Tokyo vid, even tho he didn't know what the chorus was. And he
started listening to I&W one track at a time, but stopped after Take the
Time, for some reason... I think he likes Rush more, but he still won't
admit it - he was playing air guitar to La Villa Strangiato right in front
of me the first time he heard it, which is a pretty good sign...

I bought Test For Echo yesterday! Woohoo!!

I'm in Australia, so Rush obviously won't come here. All I can say to those
people who are going to the concerts is:

I HATE YOU , YOU COMPLETE AND UTTER BASTARDS!!

I've been a fan for only 3 months, but seeing them (especially on the
current tour) would make my life complete. I would happily die afterwards.

Just a question about Savatage now...

Which album should I buy first?

Also, I've been looking for a Galactic Cowboys album to buy (heard about em,
haven't heard em except for their rendition on Live in Tokyo of Take the
Time) but the only one I've been able to find is 'Machine Fish', or
    something... is this any good?

I bought 'Gretchen Goes to Nebraska' yesterday, my first King's X cd.
Here's a rather silly quetsion about the band... is the X pronounced
'Cross', or as the letter X (as in, King's Ex)? I know it's probably a
    silly question...

Another thing - that FE FI FO joke - I didn't get it at all... was it a US
    thing?

That's all, hope to speak to you all again soon!!! Sorry if this was a wee
    bit too long...

    Nigel

     Greetings Everyone!

I know little 'bout some of them. So here I go.......

Everon....I heard them on sample comp. CD. It's soft pomp music. I like
them for BGM. But I won't buy their album.

Time Machine....I heard them on their limited single "The Dubgeon Of
Vachican". It's owesome. I love that.Very prog and impressive. This single
was dedicated to Chris Oliva (Savatage). So this tells you what their sound
    like.

Galleon....Another tracks from Sample Comp. CD. It's wierd bands. Some kind
of Folk music. It's interesting. But I don't have any albums from them.

Shadow Gallery....I like them. Their 2nd opus is amazing. 1st album was
nice, though cheap production makes us a bit less attractive. But they could
stand another dimensions with 2nd album. Highly recommended.

Well,I'd like to introduce another Dt-ish band here. It's Kington Wall,I
think they are Finnish,or maybe Swedesh....anyway they are from
    scandinavia. I think they released 3 studio albums,but vox (I don't know
his name) died by OD last year. So they are no-longer exist,I think. But
    it's impressive,alabian-prog music. You'll love their music.

    Later.

    Hello 'jamanoids.

The anagrams still are an old thread.

I visited a record fair here in Helsinki last Sunday and the place was
loaded with all kinds of goodies. If only I weren't so broke...

The most astounding things I saw in there were a copy of WDATU (something
like #468 or the like) and a high-numbered copy of Antiquities. Both with
tags "Fan Club Release" on them. The merchant offered them for FiM 200
(approx. $42). Now does Mike Bahr have any idea how the fuck can a Finnish
bootleg cd merchant have copies of your stuph? I tried to beat some sense
to the guy but he wouldn't chance the tags on the cds, so take heed,
everyone, we are now a Fan Club. I didn't even try to explain the snapperhead
    what a mailing list is...

There was some other cool shit too. Anyone know what is this "2112 Days"
boot by Rush? The same guy who was selling copies of MBahr stuff also
carried a very nice-looking boxed set of "Lost in the Sky", also copies of
"Wake Up!" and "A Kick into a Dream". All of them with hideous prices. Also
a Japanese version of Enchant's "Blueprint..." was in there, for measly
    FiM 230 ($48). What a rip-off artist.

My pal, also a jammer albeit a silent one, found Stratovarius' Japanese version
of "Father Time" EP for FiM 200. I happened to buy the only copy of that disk in
an import record store for FiM 99 half an hour before going to the fair . Before
long I started looking for something cheaper. I found something too. Has anyone
ever heard a band called Ps?co Drama from Colorado Springs? Pretty cool stuff,
kinda like Queensryche. If you get your hands on their stuff, get it.

Seeing pre-Anselmo era Pantera LP's was fun too. "Power Metal Mania"? Sheesh...

Since I don't have a WWW access, could someone email me with that cheesy
JLB picture from his Winter Rose days attached to the mail?

Irene Raceu noted people to listen to Savatage's "Strees" before listening
to "Alone You Breathe" on HOR. I'd start with "When the Crowds are Gone"
on Gutter Ballet. The story starts there. I have the impression that Jon
is very seriously pouring out his heart on these. This just might be his
life story. The ones who listen these three songs in a row, you will notice
that Sava directly quotes themselves in these songs, thus building a
logical and emotional bridge between the songs. Nathan Bradley, do you
agree? You're the Sava expert around here...

Rush fans, avoid Yngwie Malmsteen's new CD "Inspiration" at all costs.
Kansas fans, avoid Yngwie's "Inspiration" at all costs.
Deep Purple fans, avoid Yngwie's "Inspiration" at all costs.
Hendrix fans, avoid Yngwie's "Inspiration" at all costs.
Rainbow fans, avoid Yngwie's "Inspiration" at all costs.
Anyone left? Avoid it. You will never hear as hideous a cover CD. This
CD gives a new meaning to term "overplay"...

Just what and when is "Sweetest Day"? The powers that be have imported
Halloween and Valentine to Finland during the last 15 years or so, but this
one's new to me. WTF is it?

Racism talk must stop on the 'jam. It's a political and ethical issue so
it is forbidden on the 'jam. Right, Skadz? Last time something like this
was discussed, it was religious issues and it eventually ended to KBibb'ed
jam. Michael Coghlan was a part of it then, he is a part of it now. Now just
what the fuck do you hold against the Ytsejam, Michael? Just wondering...
Anyone for moderated list? No? I thought so...if you want an example of a
totally destroyed-by-moderation, pseudo-intellectual list, join "Screaming
in Digital". There's only one moron on that list and that's me. Haven't
ever seen Mindcrimer post, though. I guess he's too busy putting down DT.

To arrogant newbies: We here on the jam are a mirror. You give us
attitude, you get attitude and you'll get it from a lot of veteran jammers.
This doesn't concern all newbies, only the conceited ones. You're not
conceited? Good. Let's just try to get along...if someone feels my comments
are worth flaming, get in the ring...

Neil Gallop, I've got tix for Moonspell/RC/Samael gig on next Friday.
Amorphis and Type O are coming up next. Naa na na na nah! Maybe I don't
live in the wrong town after all...:) Now if only Superior, Lemur Voice
and Clockwork would show up in here...yeah right. Just let me dream.

And last, Adam Pye, e-mail me. I have stuff for you and I've lost your
    snail mail address.

Agree 100%....I've never thought that the time change they pull off
between "Ivory Tower" and "Whispers on the Wind" (I think thats the
two...towards the end) was possible to do live, I thought it was
"studio" magic...well it wasn't and they pull it off incredibly clean
live...once again FATES WARNING left me standing there with my jaw on
    the floor!
Anyone wanna see my Ivory gate.....sig rise from the ashes?? Those
of you who have seen it know what I'm talking about..just a thought??

    cheers,

Okay, let me step in and disagree... :) I think that music in itself can reveal MUCH emotion. Look at opera : often, it's in a foreign language that most people don't understand (like Italian or French or German, etc) but still, just the intensity of the music can be *very* emotionally stirring to some people. Same with music from the "Three B's"... Have you listened to Mozart's Requiem and not felt at least *something*? A more modern example: Steve Vai's "Touching Tongues". I LOVE that song because it just does something to my brain that other, vocal songs can't do.

Yesterday I visited the first concert of the Dutch Magna Carta band Lemur Voice. I already bought their cd called Mnsighs'so I knew their songs, which are in my opinion influenced by DT. The live performance was in one word fantastic. They also played a very heavy and good new song. I recommend their cd to all jammers. I know that Marcel Coenen, their guitar player, is also a ytsejammer so maybe he can post some Lemur Voice tour dates to the list.

Finally, does anybody know something about the Bospop boot cause I haven't heard about it for a long time.

Well, not to get greedy BUT in looking at the calendar I realized that the holidays are just around the bend. Hmmmmm.......

Was curious if someone who is connected with the band might be able to convince them that it would be in their best interest to test run some of their new songs in anticipation of the release of the new CD. You know, kind of like how those cool grunge bands play small intimate shows out thar on the left coast (hehehehe - whasssup Warren, you lucky devil of an asshole ??).

Im sorry folks, but after long consideration, I have decided to unsubscribe. I have my reasons, and although some of them are personal, some are not. Regardless, I will not go quitely because I feel that at least some can benefit from this post.

** This list is about Dream Theater...I have not seen a relevant Dream Theater post in some time. NOW, granted....the group hasn't done anything relevant in the better part of a year, BUT someone inventing a string that LaBrie has been ousted from the band around the same time Sammy was forced from Van Halen is stupid, immature and idiotic.

** The list has lost a great deal of its power. One of the reasons I subscribed in the first place was to be a part of the lobbying force that had made ACOS possible...I thought that was important....as it still is....unfortunately.....If we were to try something like that now.....it wouldn't work....I would be here for days explaining why....but the easiest way to find out is to try.....

** I've no time to read and respond to 4 jams a day....I really hate to say it.....but if each and every one of you is reading every jam and responding to ever jam....and you don't have a real laid back school schedule......then you have no lives...I dont have the time neccessary to read these things....which are about 10% worthy content right now.....And really dont understand how anyone else could....

** I didn't join the rush list....I don't really care for the group enough to merit wasting time to read useless reviews of their concert....I feel sorry for their fans....to have to put up with shit from SRO about WM....I feel sorry for alex.....who has been compelled to release a solo album....I feel sorry for geddy...who has the most ugly nose in rock.....(I think Im getting a little stupid here....)

** I do not suck dick......too many people here would drop to their knees upon sight, sound, or touch of the 6 past, present and relevant members of DT (All the knobs on the jam will say "ummmmm excuse me, BUT dt has had more than just 6 members....there was Charl...{SNIP}" ...At least a handful of you with a portion of a brian left will realize that I mean the present members and kev Mo...) Regardless.....I've grown out of the 'I idolize this band' stage........sure...I will continue to go to ethyl shows....sure...I will continue to go to dream theater shows...sure I may pop in once in a while to get news.....BUT, I will not go up to Greg Smith, and almost suck him off cause he happened to play with John Petrucci....Im sure JP, Derek, Mike, James, JM LOVE the attention they get from you guys.....BUT there is a reason why they didnt show up to YtseCon III.....It wasnt Jeff Chew's fault...or any othe single human being on this list....but more importantly, it was the collective act of ytsejammers going up to dt members and going... "Hi, {insert dt mmber name here}, I am a ytsejammer" as the jammer drops to his knees and unzips dt members trousers " please just let me .....chhhhoooommmpppp" ....my active participation as a ytsejammer ends here....because I do not suck dick.....

Now obviously, I am not being collective in my finger pointing.....I have met Jammers that are good people......really good people....and I hope to continue my internet and personal relationships with them.... but If you have not already guessed it...I AM pointing fingers here....Its not just one person.....a strong group of you have done exactly what Neal Peart complained about in his stupid song Virtuality....

I guess the point I am trying to make is this....I worship no one....not even members of dt, rush, van halen, journey.....etc.....

each and every one of these bands are incredible for their contributions to music....but I refuse to allow myself to turn into what I described above...

One more thing.....right after this letter...I am unsubscribing.....If you want me to read something that you want to say....it would be relatively obvious that the use of private email would be the smart thing to do.....

    Enjoy the jamming...

Number one. Time signatures are a big part of jazz. What makes a time sig progressive is not the meter change, but the meter itself. I'm not ISO a band that is known only for gratuitous changes of meter, but one that makes the whole wealth of musical knowledge a well that they can draw from in order to create their soundscape. Take DT for instance (so I don't get flamed.) A lot of people will say that "I just can't get into the music... I can't keep up with all the changes... It's too complex..." So the hell what! I like the sound of meter shifts from 6/8 to 7/8 to 4/4 to 9/8 to 5/8 and back to a common of 6/8. It makes the music versatile further down the line of the song... Here's a term for you: Overture. The beginning of a DT song will have the most frequent meter changes because it contains a blurb from each riff of the song, (generally... this is not the uh... textbook DT song, but an example) and then will spend longer times in each "Field" or "groove" for the rest of the song. There is always a constant in the song... In most DT songs the constant is the 8th note. But just writing a song in odd meter, ala "Money," or the first track from Sting's "Mercury Falling" CD (the name escapes me) is very progressive. It FORCES the listener to concentrate on the music, to center him(her)self on the riff or groove. The human being is stuck on binary meter because we have two legs, two eyes, two ears... etc. It is much easier for us to count to two, four, six or eight repetitively than odd or changing numbers. Then there are the weirdos, ie: US!. We like to do interesting new stuff, or if not do it, listen to it. I wrote a very playable riff in 15/8 the other day just to see if I could do it... and it's cool... (Kind of a 3+2+1+3+3 thing, players) Anyway... no more lecture...

Number two. Would someone please tell me how to get a Ytseshirt? I want one and I'm gonna buy one as soon as my paycheck comes. Also-- those of you making DT themes for PC, if they're Win 3.1 compatible, send 'em right over. (I is a DT freak with no decorations... completely internalized musical weirdness.)

Michael C. ...you must do this once a year...kinda like Christmas, huh? Your rhetoric is just plain neanderthalithic (sound it out if you can't read it). I'd take this to private e-mail, but I think the asshole who wrote the joke and you both need to be made an example of the complete and udder gridlock America faces with race relations. The joke had nothing to do with "varied dialogue" and your reference to "squaeaking wheels" shouldn't be ignored. New year, same bullshit. The first step toward aquality is erasing thinking like yours, no matter what color that person is (the only part of your post that makes sense). Sorry to those who were in flinch mode waiting for this kind of feedback to clutter the jam...to those of you who may agree with the joke or "squeaky wheel" comments, fuck you. Steve >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The African American and Hispanic communities are known for being a "squeaking wheel" in political and social realms for whatever reason. Because of this we have strife and dissension. Perhaps if one would not make a big deal about their ethnic origin they would become more accepted in society. Just let it lay, take it with a grain of salt and go on. If you are not a part of the aforementioned groups this advice stills applies. If you can't laugh at yourself, someone else will. I mean no offense by this reply, I'm only making a suggestion to enable you to enjoy the varied dialouges we experience here on the Jam. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

WOW!! This was a fucking legendary concert, man!! You can't get any better than this. Although the place (Dallas Music Complex) sucked cause there was standing room only and very very stuffy and hot (a girl fainted during Eric's set!), all three guys ruled!! Eric Johnson could've picked some better songs to do (not that the ones he did were bad at all) but he could played My Desert Rose or SRV. However, he totally made up for it when he did his solo at the end with just him and his guitar wailing away and all of a sudden, segued into Cliffs of Dover!! That about made the whole night!! Of course the two other guys were absolutely amazing. The only problem: by the time they all came on at the end, I was a bit too drunk to really remember much except for Eric solo, very impressive!
