Does anyone know what the command line for pkzip is so i can keep long
filenames intact? I'm making a DT theme and i want to zip it up and make
it available to other jammers. thanks.

My favorites are the instrumental version (I suspect it's the one from
the InstruMental 2 CD, but I got mine on tape a long time before that came
out, so I can't say for sure) and the DOE version. The instrumental
version because it's played really well, there are no annoying
not-quite-strong-enough vocals (one of my problems with the Cintron
version) and Kevin's solo at the end rocks and is pretty clear in the mix.
DOE is my favourite because of the the energy James puts into it, and the
sheer explosion of emotion that it ends with (I'm a "don't go!" fan.)

The Cintron version wasn't produced very well, if memory serves me, and
sounded kind of stitched together, and Chris just didn't have the power in
his voice that James does. And I don't care for the official version as
much because they took out some of my favourite parts and got way too
heavy-handed with the lyrics (IMO) while focusing more on an abstract
intellectual concept that isn't fleshed out extremely well in the song
(all that carpe diem business) and less on the emotion...

although I will say there are some things I love about the official
version. The intro (acoustic up to where the lyrics start), another world,
and Derek's solo (that's an awesome sound he's using).

I've got a real problem with the end though. "Even though I'll be gone, I
will live on." Huh? Where's that come from? I don't really see the
justification for it in the song...I could accept that the idea is drawn
from stuff that's described in the music rather than the words, but it
seems directly in contradiction with other elements of the lyrics...anyone
care to discuss this? I believe we've had this conversation before, but
    it's been a while.

I haven't actually listened to any version of the song in quite some time.
    Think I'll go do that.

    Hello,

I just got the TSO Christmas cd the other day. Man, it is really good! I'd
heard that it was written by Jon Oliva, but I didn't realize that the rest
of Savatage actually played on it! That was a pleasant surprise.

It's true, I generally don't get into Christmas songs too much, but they
made them sound really good. Again, it's like Streets and Dead Winter Dead
where there's a story behind it. That's something I liked. And if you
haven't already, listen to Streets before this one. I say that all the time
about Handful of Rain too, listen to Streets before "Alone You Breathe". It
really adds to it, believe me :)

I was a bit disappointed that Zak doesn't have any lead vocals on it, but he
does do backup and the singers on this are very good too. I really like the
    guy on the first song.

So, basically what I'm trying to say here is if you like Savatage, check it
out :) It's some really good stuff :) If you liked DWD and the "Christmas
in Sarajevo" song on it (which by the way is on this) then you'll love it. :)

Well, take care and talk to you later, bye :)

    Irene

    hey...

can someone on this list lay down for me in concrete terms what he
big deal is with time changes? everyone keeps raving about how wonderful
various bands are because the keep making time changes... does that ability
alone really add so much to music? what's the deal? does classical music
utilize time changes? (say Mozart or Beethoven, as "classical" is kind of
broad) how about jazz? (say Miles Davis)
i'm asking honestly here, and yes, i do understand what a time
change is in the first place. i'm just a little curious as to why they are
regarded so highly on this list.

                                                            -matt

what i do know, however, is that the new Tool cd is beyond belief.

in the cd player: Tool - Aenima; Loreena McKennit - The Mask and the
Mirror; Dead Can Dance - Toward the Within; Black Sabbath - self titled; and
    Down - NOLA.

We have strife and dissent because we are HUMAN and because
dick lickers continue to express their relative superiority over other
groups in such ways as these damn Racist jokes. Blaming strife and
dissension on minorities? Couldn't we just spin that around at you? This

Why does one have to degrade one's self image to be able to
laugh at oneself? You miss the point. You and I don't have to fight uphill
battles (I'm hispanic, but Spanish... so I'm white) against prejudice and
ignorance. So naturally you make light of the situation. Well, many people
(myself included) don't find Racism to be cute, or to be laughable. And if
you're desensitized to the point at which you DO, you might as well burn a

    Fellow Guitar-plucking Ytsejammers,
This is your lesson on guitar care:
Things not to use on the finish of your instrument:
    1) Baby oil (Rosy Palm will get jealous)
    2) Pledge (expands the pores in the wood, causing fret-pits)
    3) Saliva (self explanatory)
    4) Blood (Unless going for effect)
    5) Anything with a symbol on the bottle akin to someone losing a limb.
    6) Anything that your mother or wife would strike you for if you used it
       on the coffee table.
    7) Windex
    8) Any substance that will remove nail polish, or your fingernails, FTM.

Things that are cool to your tool:
    1) Liquid Gold wood cleaner and preservative (for all guitar surfaces).
    2) Murphy's Oil Soap
    3) Actual brand name guitar polishes, (they're cool if you got the money).

    That's about it.
A word or two on Fretboard maintenance:
If the fingerboard is high-gloss, (fully finished) use any of the
above-approved items to remove the skin-shmegma.
BUT! if the wood is not glossy (ebony, rosewood, or most basses) then be
cool and just use some elbow grease, and a guitar pick to scrape the
shmegma off, as any substance on the bare wood will damage it over time...

Thanks, and keep scorching your axes cleanly,
    ProgRockBoy

Aw, thanks man, I'm touched. Really, that does mean something. Even
though I've never met any jammers in person before (I only even know
what a few look like), I must say that it is almost like a
    "family-type" atmosphere or something. I mean, i can tell there's a
lot of loyalty and stuff here. For all the newbies here, don't let
any flame wars or any lame posts (here? nah...) scare you off. Stick
around, kick back with a cup o' joe and call life good. You've come
into a family of some of the coolest people around. Oh, and I must
stick up for the reliability of trades and stuff here, too. I've
NEVER been let down yet. So far, everyone I've traded/bought/sold
with has been very reliable. Not to say that noone has never/will
never get screwed, but believe me, if they do, heads will roll.
Thanks for being cool everyone. Cheers, mates.

P.S. Oh BTW, my "hard core" friend has said before that the onyl DT
he sort of likes is the opening for "The Mirror." And he does sort
of dig Pantera, so needless to say, I played the part of MP's live
solo during Ytsejam with the Pantera sample. Still didn't convert
    him. Oh well... .
P.P.S. Oh, and to anyone within reach of K-SHE 95 (based in St.
Louis), I just heard Pantera and Corrosion of Conformity back to back
tonight on their new music program. I'm not heavily into either
band, but it was cool hearing some metal on the radio again.

Heck if I know guy. Everyone else on here thinks they're cool. I
think used tastefully that they are nifty, but there are some bands
that just go overboard... If everyone were so hung up on time
changes, we'd all be on a Beck Mailing list.

Beck is the most progressive band ever. They don't even know what
time sigs are let alone keep in time with anything. It's highly
experimental because none of them know how to play their instruments
and everytime you hear a song you can hear it in a different way...
To me it just gets worse and worse...

First of all, I can't believe that anyone would *defend* the use of
racial and ethnic humor. I'm no saint. I tell ethnic jokes on
occasion. But that in NO way makes it right. And the last place it
belongs is in a public forum like this one.

Besides, aren't you the guy that got your panties in a bunch during the
oh-so-unforgettable religion thread we had here almost a year ago? It's
easy to give advice, Michael. But it's another thing entirely to follow
    it, wouldn't you say?

    > Perhaps if one would not make a big deal about their ethnic origin they

I make a big deal out of my ethnic origin. I'm Irish and Italian and I'm
damned proud of it. Nobody gets away with telling me that my heritage is
any less than another's. I wouldn't expect anyone else to react
differently, simply because he or she is not a white male, and jokes
    about their heritage is "acceptable."

    > I mean no offense by this reply, I'm only making a suggestion to enable you
    > to enjoy the varied dialouges we experience here on the Jam.

I don't even *get* the joke (and don't explain it to me), but I can tell,
by the reactions of those who do, that it wasn't a matter of "Canadians
say 'eh' at the end of their sentences" or "All Italians play guitar" or
something equally light-hearted. This was obviously a joke based upon
hate and/or ignorance, and it has no place here. In order to enjoy the
Jam, it must be an environment where we are all accepted because we're
lovers of music, and not one where we are categorized by genetic makeup.
You want to enjoy the Jam? Then accept everyone for what we are - people.

wasn't working. Phone still isn't working. How I have been online for about 2
hours is beyond me. If you have tried to get in touch lately and I haen't
responded, I appologize. Please resend your message. If you were worried
about me, go ahead and write. Things are still broken here and nobody wants
to fix anything. I may have to use threats now. Oh well. I have to go. I will
be back and posting like mad again when the line is fixed, (1998). Take care
all and I wil be back. Write if you must.

    Jammerz,

If there's a Bryan G. Cook on board, please say "aye".

I met this fellow a couple of years ago via the internet, but lost contact
with him. This seems like the kind of place he'd hang, because he's cool
like that :-) He was a student in the MP&E program at Berklee, and I figure
he might've just about graduated by now. I hope to hear how he's doing.

    Now Playing: Delerium, "Semantic Spaces"

Wow! I really like what Michael had to say here. We all take ourselves too
seriously from time to time, me especially. Sometimes it's better just to
leave things lie than stirring up shit. Now lets hope this above message is
heeded come Christmas time. Michael and others who were here last holiday
season know what I mean. If you weren't than it's something that's rather
long to explain, let's just say last christmas was an interesting time here
    in Ytseland.

Hello my fellow jammers! I saw a couple reviews of the Rush show at the Knick. I was there, too. Here's my .02... As far as performance, the show totally ruled. Rush was awesome (of course)and they put on a great show. I saw them once before on the Counterparts tour at Madison Square Garden, and the funny thing was they began with Dreamline and ended with YYZ for the encore there, too. The stage show was better in NYC, though. They had flame pots and those two big dueling rabbits, and seeing how it was my first real concert, I was totally blown away. Since then, the shows I've been to have just gotten better and better (DT at the Strand in R.I., QR at the Knick...)But here's why I just had to take up bandwith with my little sob story (And it does turn out to be a sob story). My tickets were for sec.125, row P. I figured they'd be good because I called Ticketbastards like 3 hours after they went on sale. Well, when I got there, I discovered I was sitting way in the back. I figured that wasn't too bad, I mean at least I made it to the show. But then, when the band came on, everyone in the whole arena stood up and went crazy (as did I), except the section I was sitting in. They were like lethargic old rats at a cheese convention. Everyone around me was just talking real loud and making it real difficult to get into the music. Then, after Dreamline everyone around me started smoking pot like it was going out of style. I don't really care if someone wants to smoke weed, but geez, it stunk so bad my g-friend almost puked! Everyother show I went to, everyone stood up and screamed and totally got into the band on stage. These people were like there to get high and sit around and talk. I wore my DT shirt, and I was hoping to find other jammers there, and to make things worse some guy behind me made a comment like "Dream Theater? Aren't they one of those glam bands..." I swear, it was like I was in this bizarre nightmare where I'm at this awesome concert , but I'm watching from a paralell dimention where everyone's an idiot. I won't go into any more depressing details, but to sum up, I was at a great concert and had a shitty time. Which sucked. Anyways, I didn't mean to write this big whiny post, I just need some sympathy, dammit!:):):) But, despite all that, it still was a great concert for me music and showmanship-wise. If any of you get a chance to go see Rush on this tour, definately go! I'm contemplating going to another show, hopefully I'll be able to afford it!:)
