I don't mean to get sentimental here, but I am going to anyway:)

Just thought I'd post to make sure all the newbies know how many really
cool people we have on here. For example, I couldn't find LatM, and Dale
posted about seeing it for cheap, so I asked him to get it for me, and he
did. While it was being sent, my parents were skeptical. "Who's to say
this 'Dale' won't just take the money and run?" So I say "He's on the Jam.
He might as well be my brother." They were like "Whatever." Sure enough a
couple days later it arrived. Cool CD i might add.

Also, if for no other reason, the jam is a cool place cause of the
recommendations. I just counted, and I now own 18 albums because of
YtseRecommendations. Of those 18, I liked 94.4% of them, and 77.7% of them
still receive regular rotation in my CD player. I realize that 18 is
probably a small # compared to others, but I don't buy that many CD's.

66 more jams until my 1000 jam anniversary!

    Good afternoon,

    >Holy shit, Rick, i didn't realize you were an old dude...(j/k) :-)

Oh yeah! I have one and a half feet in the grave. :)

    >Date: Sat, 19 Oct 1996 02:56:31 -0500
    >From: "Larry Odneal" <hawkeye7@ix.netcom.com>

    >Well, Rick, I can help you resolve this. Michael specifically said he
    >prefers "music" that makes him think. You specifically said "those are all
    >things that ... make me think" - talking about lyrics, which are, after
    >all, WORDS. Michael is responding to MUSIC, you are responding to WORDS.
    >Two different elements of modern music. Case closed.

Not quite. Lyrics are generally assigned melodies, that makes
them musical does it not? I can't separate the two of them. If DT's
music was bubble gum metal from a lyrical perspective, I wouldn't buy
it regardless of their instrumental prowess.

    >No disrespect intended at all, but many musicians (myself included) don't
    >really care about the lyrics that much - sure, it's great when they are
    >intelligent and clever (a la Mr. Peart's) but - hey, we didn't become
    >musicians so we could write great poetry, right?

True, but a memorable lyric can do more to get an artist
noticed than great musicianship. Look at Alanis. She is probably the
worst artist to come out of Canada in years, but, one line about
playing tonsil hockey while at the movies and it's millions time! ;)

    >We became musicians
    >because we felt a need to express ourselves through sound and dynamics,
    >through emotion and power, rather than through an ability to turn a phrase.

I'm a guitarist and I agree with the ability to convey emotion
through music is a valid one. But notes can't tell stories of healing
and suffering, of tragedy and triumph and sadness and joy. Only words
can do that. Of course, if you knew the exact references from which an
instrumental was written, you might also form that conclusion but I
think that lyrics are the key illustrator in most songs.

    >but lots of people
    >can manipulate words - very, VERY few can manipulate musical instruments as
    >well as Petrucci, Portnoy, Myung, Moore, Sherinian, and yes, Labrie. (I
    >consider the well-trained voice an instrument, too.) Granted, Neil Peart
    >is EXCEPTIONAL at BOTH lyrics and his chosen instrument.

It is true that the boys are all marvels at using their
respective instruments. But that wouldn't be enough for me if the
words just couldn't measure up. Consider Steve Vai for a moment. THe
man is one of the premier guitarists of the late 20th century. He's a
great innovator and isn't afraid to take chances. Do I listen to it as
often as I do I&W? Nope. Why? Because instrumentals become boring
after the first two hours of listening. Songs are composed of
instrumental arrangements and lyrics. I don't think you can refer to a
piece as a song without lyrics. If that were the case, we'd be calling
piano concertos, symphonies and every other form of musical expression
    a song as well.
When I go through Awake, I refer to all of the tracks as songs
except Erotomania, which I term an instrumental due to it's lack of
    vocal content.
Then again, I could just be a bit anal. :)

    >Strike me down! Even though I've been listening to and playing Rush tunes
    >since 1974, I am that one person. "Meaningful backdrop"? Hmmm - let me
    >think - uhhhh - nope. I think one of my drummers may have felt that way,
    >but not me. Rush is kewl, I love the lyrics, I dig the music, but - IMHO -
    >they do not compare to DT. Sorry. All you Rush freaks, please note and
    >respect the IMHO.

Opinion respected. You don't need the IMHO. If you state it, I
    think we'll gather it's your opinion. :)
Well, you may be that person, but I'm sure many people have
one artist who they identify with due to the lyrical content of the
    material.
The point about DT from a technical standpoint is well taken,
but I can't say that I'm always in the mood for something like Met. I
like the track, but I find that the length of the solo section
obscures it's mythical lyrics. Also, when you write an instrumental
passage like that into a song, and then write a sequel, there is
always a need to try to outdo what you did the first time. I'm not
sure they can do that, particularly if they use the same melody as the
basis for Met II. Personally, I hope it sounds nothing at all like the
first part. Derivative media bores me, whether in music or film.
Of course, I wouldn't want DT to simplify their sound in the
slightest. I look for that "how the F*** did he play that" element in
their music. It's the primary reason I'm a Dreamer in the first place.
    :)

    >BTW, I hope you and your wife are doing well and getting through the
    >medical crap - I know how difficult it can be.

Yup. Sue's doing very well and should be back at work on
    Nov.1.
My heartfelt thanks to those of you who have welcomed her to
    IRC with open arms. :)

    Cheers,

    Rick

I recently came across a quote I thought y'all might enjoy.

Music is a gift we all share equally. Whether we create it or simply
listen, it's a gift that can soothe, inspire, and unite us, often when we
need it most-- and expect it least.

    Beware

What you are about to read is a virgin post.

What is everyone's opinion on their first listen to "Working Man"? Given
that 7 of the 13 had DT input, and we all know of the influence of Rush
    on DT....

    ------------------------------

For what it is worth, this is what i got out of my first listen:

Good crunch: Working Man and By-Tor
Not as inspiring as it might seem: Analog and Trees
Steve and Mike would be the start of a nice band: Villa
    No real thrill: Mission
Surprisingly good: Anthem (I like this better than the orig! Should I
    listen to Slaughter more often?)
    Lost arrangement: Jacob's
    I love FW: Closer
One of my fav's, but the original still has all the grit: Nat Sci
Always a crowd pleaser, just play the tune: YYZ (amazing how even Stu
Hamm doesn't seem to be as light on the strings as Geddy)
No inspiration with this one: Red Barchetta
Not bad at all: Free Will

Just like every Rush CD (or even tribute) I am sure this will grow on
me, but I curious as to what other people thought about this. Hope this
will get some good conversation going...

    Hey, guys!

Just got "Insights" today. Paid $15 for it at Ball-buster. Whoever got it
for $6, you made me very unhappy. :( But I'm stuck in the town without a
Best Buy! Whine! Anyway, this CD rocks the house! I would agree that
Gregoor sounds IMO a LOT like Steve Perry. This is not necessarily a bad
thing. Anyway, I was interested in some of the other Magna Carta offerings.
Naturally, I've heard lots about Shadow Gallery, Enchant, and Altura. A
little about Magellan. But what about Tempest, Cairo, and World Trade?
Anybody know anything about them? Or how 'bout any of their other tribute
albums? I know about Working Man. You can e-mail privately if you want.

BTW, to go way back, my gf and I were on a trip, and she complained 'coz all
I brought to listen to was Rush, DT, QR, and Yes. Ha! I laughed. One of
these days, she'll wise up, and her eyes shall be opened to the wonder that
    is prog rock!

    Charlie:

Very nice choice of words, your tact and diplomacy are......... absent. You
should not be so quick to take offense at these jokes. Every ethnic group
has been on the receiving end of off-color jokes from time to time. Why
should you be shown special treatment? The African American and Hispanic
communities are known for being a "squeaking wheel" in political and social
realms for whatever reason. Because of this we have strife and dissension.

Perhaps if one would not make a big deal about their ethnic origin they
would become more accepted in society. Just let it lay, take it with a grain
of salt and go on. If you are not a part of the aforementioned groups this
advice stills applies. If you can't laugh at yourself, someone else will.
I mean no offense by this reply, I'm only making a suggestion to enable you
to enjoy the varied dialouges we experience here on the Jam.

    Greetings disciples of the Jam,

One of my friends in Canberra, Australia, is about to get his own radio slot, about 30-45 mins, on a local station. He will only be playin' prog *cheer*. I am going to try to get a back to back slot with him so we can blast over a hour of prog/DT each week into the ears of Canberrans. More recruits are on the way!!

Well, I got my newest set of Mike Bahr CDs (WDATU, Antiquities, SFAM, CM) and as always, very impressive.... well worth the wait, especially since the first set got lost in the mail :(

Anyway, as I am listening, noticing all of the various forms of ACOS that I have (instrumental only, Cintron version, LaBrie audition, DoE version, and release version), I decided it was time to test out the audio portion of my new CD burner, and I must say, the evolution of ACOS is very impressive, when comparing the version that I used (Cintron, DoE, release... unfortunatly, I couldn't fit another version onto the CD)... I still think that the Cintron version is one of my favorite versions... (that and release version) I wonder where DT would be if they had chosen him instead of James LaBrie...

Anyway... just wondering what other people's opinions of the varios versions were...

I second that emotion! Before I joined the jam, I was still into stuff like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. I can't remember where I found out about the jam but I signed up anyway (this was 2 years ago, BTW). After that, recommendation about other bands came flying from everywhere. FW, Marrilion, QR, etc. Everntually it prompted me to better myself as a musician and listen to a greater variety of music. After college I lost my account. I've rejoined now and the benefits that were one lost to me have been regained. Now I'm bombarded with SG, Enchant, LV, and more. But, now I'm as broke as ever. So I'm debating whether this is a curse or a benevolent gift.

Whatever... Keep those recommends coming. I can take it!

    Thanks, guys!

If it's any consolation, I didn't even understand the joke. And please noone E-mail me to clarify it. I don't wanna take part in any racist inflammations. But let me make one. I totally agree with Charlie. Who says you can't be white and not shave your head and be a fucking dumbass who has to use political propaganda to cover up for his incompetence? Now, if someone would mail me privately and explain to me what that just meant, I would be greatful. :-)

Fuck Racism! Down with militiamen! Kill the cows! Er, yeah... (Sorry, I usually don't cus this much)
