            Wicked!!! I'll go first.

The jam blows and it's subscribers couldn't build a collective
IQ high enough to make a decorticate jealous!
DT sucks and think only of technique never putting the song
    first.
Portnoy is a machine gun drummer who overplays every chance he
    gets.
            Mindcrimer is always right.
You can't dance to progressive metal.
Green Day and Nirvana rock harder than DREAM THEATRE.

That should start a war or two. ;)

1000% agreement here. That's like someone being wanted for
murder and being allowed to avoid justice by driving along a

    Hiya Watha!

            Hey kids!

I have been chatting with a ton of people lately on the net
thang and happened to chance on a discussion of Shadow Gallery with
none other than their bassist Carl Cadden-James.
So, for those of you wondering what's up with these guys, here
    you go! :)

    Hey Rick,
Thanks for the note. Shadow Gallery is preparing to record our
next cd right now. Should be done early 97. It will be released on
Magna Carta. Glad you liked the Tribute stuff - it was mucho fun.
Hope we can continiue to please. Take care.
    Carl

            Short but sweet. :)

In an unrelated story, I recently read an interview with Neil
Peart from a local publication discussing a variety of topics.
Naturally, one of the issues touched upon was he thoughts on
    Working Man.
Neil replied, "No comment. I have no thoughts on it
whatsoever. It isn't a tribute album at all in my opinion"
This is where it gets interesting.
Some of you may remember a post to this list some time ago
where Geddy was interviewed and said that he thought WM was a cash
grab and had nothing to do with tribute.
Are any of you getting the impression that the band were the
ones who blocked the sale of this disc in Canada because it was a
smaller marketplace and they had a new record coming out?
BTW, HMV Canada caved in and is now selling the disc here. I
guess the money that independents were making importing the disc from
Magna Carta was too big an enticement to shrug off their integrity. :)
Anyway, at one point in the interview, they ask Neil about the
Monster Mash segments in Limbo from TfE. He states how surprised he is
that you have to ask permission and pay people money in order to do
this. After all Rush only wanted to use it as a joke.
So, if the artists who did Working Man had performed for
nothing, it would have been fine with Neil. It was just the cash issue
that ruffled the band's feathers. Yeah right. What a hypocrite.
On a positive note, Neil said that, although nothing has been
engraved in stone, there is a possibility that THEY WILL PLAY ALL OF
    CYGNUS LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    YYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
Okay, I'm fine now. :) Whew! I've gotta switch to decaff. ;)
Incidentally, I'm not meaning to open up the whole WM thing
again. Neil's comments just struck me as very interesting.

    Cheers,

    Rick

those of you who voiced this to me, thanks! It's nice to be
    appreciated.

just now had a chance to get back into puting regularly.

Well, Jammers, ProgRockBoy is depressed. It seems that Dream Theater has
never shown hide nor hair anywhere near San Bernardino, CA in the time
that I have been a fan... (Since I&W).
If we have such considerable influence, what are the chances of convincing
them to hit the Blockbuster Pavilion here when they tour for the new LP?
I'd like to see them live other than on my Live in Tokyo Vid, and my John
    Petrucci's Rock Discipline Vid.
In other news, I'd like to give Bafu props on the JP interview... I'm

The best part about this was when that kid in NY caught the Homerun that
would've won the game for the O's. I was in DC at the time that happened when
this went on and ALL the news could talk about how Baltimore was robbed (and
they were), but they never mentioned how they got what they deserved because
Alomar played in a game he never should've played in, so the Orioles got into
the playoffs under questionable circumstances. I guess you could say What
goes around comes around. I am happy to say though that when they finally
lost, the media and the Baltimore fans gave the Yankees their proper respect
and didn't sit around crying that a 12 year old kid beat em.

Go Yankees (my favorite team, tied with any other team that plays the Braves)

Hello all, I'm new to the 'jam, and as far as I can
tell, this is a bitchin' place to be. Anyhoo, I felt compelled to write
about one thing:Rush. They have done so much for music, it's indescribable.
I had never heard Rush when I first was led to DT, but after I found
Rush, it was obvious the influence they have had. Rush has not been
"heavy" a lot of the time, but they have always been redefining their music,
hence progressivity. At any rate, I think Rush is awesome, and consider them
the "elders". Hope this isn't all re-tread.
P.S. Does anyone know if they are coming to The Mark in the Quad Cities
or Five Seasons in Cedar Rapids Iowa? The closest so far is Minneapolis.
P.P.S I tried like a good "newbie" to get the faq, but it gave me an
error return. Any ideas? Does it tell how to snip out parts of old Jams
    to reply to?

Maybe . . . there are approximately 6000 gazillion ways to do any one thing
in Win95, but this should work. Go to the Control Panel (click either "My
Computer" or the "Start" button, then "Settings") and find Desktop Themes.
(If it's not there, you need to re-install Plus). If it's there,
double-click it, and then click the down-arrow to the right of the current
theme. This lists the available themes. If you don't see "dt-theme" ,
then you need to "browse" for it, and find the folder where you unzipped it
to. (You DID unzip it, right? If not, E-mail me.) Once you find it,
double-click it - then make sure all the items on the right are checked -
and you should see all the DT-type icons, bitmaps, sounds, colors, fonts,
cursors, kibbles, and bits. Hit OK and you're there, d00d.

Well, Rick, I can help you resolve this. Michael specifically said he
prefers "music" that makes him think. You specifically said "those are all
things that ... make me think" - talking about lyrics, which are, after
all, WORDS. Michael is responding to MUSIC, you are responding to WORDS.
Two different elements of modern music. Case closed.

No disrespect intended at all, but many musicians (myself included) don't
really care about the lyrics that much - sure, it's great when they are
intelligent and clever (a la Mr. Peart's) but - hey, we didn't become
musicians so we could write great poetry, right? We became musicians
because we felt a need to express ourselves through sound and dynamics,
through emotion and power, rather than through an ability to turn a phrase.
You give examples of Rush songs that have touched me, and made me marvel
at Neil's writing skills and command of the language, but lots of people
can manipulate words - very, VERY few can manipulate musical instruments as
well as Petrucci, Portnoy, Myung, Moore, Sherinian, and yes, Labrie. (I
consider the well-trained voice an instrument, too.) Granted, Neil Peart
is EXCEPTIONAL at BOTH lyrics and his chosen instrument.

    > I think you would find it difficult to find one person on this

    their life.

Strike me down! Even though I've been listening to and playing Rush tunes
since 1974, I am that one person. "Meaningful backdrop"? Hmmm - let me
think - uhhhh - nope. I think one of my drummers may have felt that way,
but not me. Rush is kewl, I love the lyrics, I dig the music, but - IMHO -
they do not compare to DT. Sorry. All you Rush freaks, please note and
    respect the IMHO.

BTW, I hope you and your wife are doing well and getting through the
medical crap - I know how difficult it can be.

    Hi all...

I know that it has been a while since you've heard from me, but it is
midterms time in Northwestern land. Anyway, a curious thought occurred to
me today - we all want DT to reach more people. But I wonder - what is
the best way to accomplish this? I think that a good way is to start with
the DT covers on ACOS - you know, stuff that people are familiar with,
then work your way to the soft Space Dye Vest kinda stuff. Then you ease
them into I&W. Then you reach for WDADU. I've never made it that far,
that is why I think that I am doing something wrong. There's a guy down
my hall that is a percussion major and likes Rush and classical and I
still couldn't convert him. That is sad. I think because I overloaded
him with the instrumentals on TTT and Metropolis. I tried to wow him but
all I did was make his head spin.=)
One last thought...how many feel that Charlie D was not that bad of a
singer. It is obvious who has more talent and training. But Charlie does
not lack on the feeling aspect. Only a Matter of Time is my favorite DT
song and the Killing Hand definitely stirs my emotions. Does any body
agree? Does anybody know what he is up to nowadays?

That is all for now - thanks for your attention...I usually don't use up
    this much bandwidth!

    Charlie

    Whats up guys,

Here is the setlist for the fourth week of my college radio
show..imagine if I actually got paid to play these songs..(probably too
    good to be true!)

    MAGELLAN: "Storms and Mutiny"
    FATES WARNING: "The Apparition"
    BLIND GUARDIAN: "Mordred's Song"
    SANCTUARY: "Future tense"
    STRATOVARIUS: "Hands of time"
ENERTIA: "I Know Your Demons" <--awesome band from upstate NY
    QUEENSRYCHE: "Walk in the Shadows"
    MEMENTO MORI: "Seeds of Hatred"
    SAVATAGE: "Dungeons are Calling" (live)
    SAVATAGE: "Sirens" (live)

    -- news --

    ZEITGEIST: "Mask of Sanity"
    ZEITGEIST: "Living Infinity"
IRON MAIDEN: "Only the Good Die Young"
    APOCRYPHA: "Terror's Holding Onto You"
    HEAVENS GATE: "Gate of Heaven"
    ANNINILATOR: "Crystal Ann"
    ANNIHILATOR: "Alice In Hell"
    RUSH: "Middletown Dreams"
    ANGRA: "Carry On"
MERCYFUL FATE: "Come to the Sabbath"
    DREAM THEATER: "Afterlife"

After the news I played this amazing progressive metal band from
California called ZEITGEIST. Their cd "The Eyes of Time" got me hooked
on one listen (which is pretty hard to do!) Great guitar shredding all
over the place along with vocal harmonies ala Galactic Cowboys sprinkled
here and there. What I like is that they can write amazing acoustic
songs that are friggin' awesome!! Not boring or sappy ballad type
shit.these songs rock...(very similar style to "Tiera Del Fuego" on
George Lynch's solo album but lots more complex!) the rest of the cd is
    pure progressive metal.

    contact these guys at: TheGeist@aol.com

also, definitely check out ENERTIA (awesome prog-metal band from upstate
NY....I cant believe how many awesome US bands are popping up..hope this
music comes back with a vengeance here in the states!!) at their
    web-page:

    More great music to come.............
