Does anyone who's seen the show and is seriously into the three headlining
guitarists remember which songs they played? I don't mean which albums
they covered, I mean the names of the individual songs. Aside from the
obvious show-opener which has to be "There's A Fire In The House," I'd
love to know what else Vai is going to do from "Fire Garden." Please
e-mail me about this so as not to clutter up the 'jam. After all, Seattle
is the last show of the tour, so it's not like I'm going to spoil it for
    anyone else...

    G'day Jammers,
Enchant are great, America's best 'unkown' band in ages. It reminds me
of Marillion, not surprising concidering M guitarist Steve Rothery
produced most of it and his guitar is all over the album(aka 'The
Compiler') Has anyone heard their new album 'Wounded'? You can get from
CD Europe at a staggering $29.99 plus $9.99 post to OZ would end up
costing me AUS$50, is it available from anywhere else??
Yanni? Kinda alright, I am put off where his 'insperations' come from
ie. MIKE OLDFIELD, if I was Mike I'd sue Yanni for every cent he has!!
MANOWAR still exsist, their new album is great.
I'm very disappionted with the new Rush, not a patch on the classic
    Rush that I love.

                    Cheers Graham.

    Hi all

As usual, a couple of things that I've been thinking about recently (if I told
you about *all* the things I think of, the guys with the one-armed canvas
jackets would be outside my office pretty fast).

Has anybody else noticed just how bigotted a lot of people on music lists can
be? The sort of "band XXX is the best there is, the best there ever was, the
best there ever will be, and if you even dare like another band as much or even
more you deserve throwing of this list" syndrome. Some of the other lists I'm
on have whole hoards of these people on them, but there's also more than enough
of them on the Jam. Anybody out there study psychology and looking for a subject
    for your degree?

Lots of postings about Mr. Moore (or less) at the moment, and I was wondering
how many of his die-hard fans/supporters would rave about the Chromakey stuff
if they had heard it for the first time without knowing who it was by. I must
admit I was very disappointed by what I heard. Perhaps I might have thought
"hmm, interesting, some potential, listen again in a year or so" if I hadn't
    known who it was.

For those of you who were pissed off the none of the boys showed at the Con:
con = confidence trick, rip-off (I'm sure they had their reasons).

My favourite Dream Theater album: the one I've been waiting for for nearly
    two years.

Sting played for a band called The Policeman? That's a new one on me. He did
however once do a single with a band called Clark Kent (honest). For me, Sting
is an example of somebody whose solo work is much better than the stuff he did
in a band (unlike Phil Collins...).

Got to go now, the men with the canvas jackets came anyway (I hope they have
jello there - you don't need a knife to eat jello).

    stay safe and happy listening

    << Hey All,

I wont go into too much about the Con, especailly since I Missed the first
half; I know that others will give a more detialed description of the Con
here, so I will just share MY experience:

First of all, I live in NJ, about 30 miles from La Guardia airport, So I
figured that it would take me an hour to get there at the outside. I
overslept (well, actually, I woke up early, then went back to sleep, and THEN
overslept). By the time I was heading out the door, it was 1:00, the time
the Con was to start!! So I was already in a tizzy when I left. I live
about 4 miles from the Goethals Bridge, which goes into Staten Island. At
the other end of Staten Island (I think about 6-10 miles) is the Verrazano
Bridge to Brooklyn. Well, this was my planned route. I get on the Goethals
bridge, and about halfway across, It backed up; and this was no 'slow' moving
backup, we were stopped!! There IS a Toll booth that you have to go through
at the far end, but THat was not the problem. It turns out that about
halfway across the island, the 10 lanes out of the toll plaza were merging
into ONE!!! I heard this on the radio and was like pulling my hair out. I
asked the toll guy how far down this Contruction was, he said WAY at the
other end; and traffic was stopped dead as far as I could see. Fuck it, I
paid my four dollars (toll) and just turned around to go back to Jersey and
    take another route.

Well, It was about 45 minutes after I left my house, and I am now only 5
miles into my trip, woohoo!! At this point I was partaking of a 'stress
relieving' indulgence (those That have driven w/me before know what I am
talking about). So, I figure I will head over to the Holland tunnel and take
my chances in Manhattan. Get this, on my way into Jersey City, It happenned
again, the traffic in front of me was stopped. This was on the Jersey
Turnpike. I actually screamed (I have felt like screaming before in my life
while driving, but this was the first time I have ever given out a scream
like that, And I HAVE driven the LA freeway system before!!). Well, luckily
THIS one lane was moving a bit!!! I got into the city (about 1.5 hours after
I left my house), that was a pain, got into Brooklyn, and it was smooth
sailing form there, even though I did not know where I was going (my
directions were simple enough from Staten Island, but that was ALL I brought)
I had to wing the rest of the trip, and did fine. I showed up at the con 2
hours late!!!! It took me 2 hours to go about 30 miles away (in comparison,
it only took me 50 minutes to get home, and there WAS some traffic).

Well, the con was pretty cool. I walked into the room and there was a whole
bunch of guys talking. This Con was a bit different from Con 1 (The last one
I was at), not only because No band members were there, but because it was a
larger room and there were no drinks to loosen people up. There were a few
pockets of people who were not really getting around meeting people, and
there were other pockets of genuine mingling going on. I took it upon myself
to meet a few of these NON-minglers just so that I could say that I tried to
meet people, and hopefully help them try to meet others. I mean THIS was all
that this Con was going to be, so why not make the most of it (not meant to
put down the Con AT ALL :). Well, I'll be damned if I can remember some of
the names of people I met, but at least next time I have a head start...

I also met CD MAN himself, Mike Bahr; Cool dude (as if there was a doubt).
Picked up a Rush boot, Critical Mass (all of the DT stuff was gone save for
a LIE single). D-Man actually made it too!! Listened to a concert by
this comedy-musical team of , wait, who WERE those guys??? (Syrinx and
Ibanez). They put on a cool little show. Some audience participation was
necessary for TSM!! And we won't get into the Silent Lucidity contest... One
of the Highlights for me was when I grabbed a peek at one of Mike's 'beta'
Cd's of his next project, Precious Things(?) and started asking him
questions. A few others around were in earshot, and before we knew it about
6 or seven of us were checking this thing out. Looks like another great Boot
is on the horizon people!!! Towards the end of the con , everyone was
starting to make plans for afterwards. The previously mentioned Rush tribute
was not until 11:30 at night, and I had 6.5 hours to kill, I decided to go
home instead. They started kicking us out of the room at 5 sharp, and at
this point the con was history!!

All in all, it was a good get together, and Jeff Chew should be applauded at
putting this thing together. I know there are some who were disappointed at
the band not showing and all, but as it has been said before: this is not
about the band per se, it is about OUR experience of the band, and other
bands we share an appreciation for. We share some tastes in music, and
through this we form a group of similarly minded individuals who ALL bring
something different to the table. This Con gives us a chance to share our
individual experiences and hopefully find some kindred spirits among the the
    others.

That was a SINGLE PLAY out of hundreds! In that game alone, they had over 12
at bats to win the game and they blew it. Face it, the O's are a good team,
but they're still the second place wildcard.

Now onto the Dream Theater stuff. I would like to propose that everyone write

have written to them before and they definitely respond to user requests if
    there is enough interest.

Another sign that the apocalypse is upon us (Thanks _Sports
         Illustrated_)?

I think Oprah is an excellent example of the medioctrity America's
general population puts up with/accepts. I would also hate to see DT
appear in People magazine or as cameos on "Friends" (a show that
hasn't been very funny since its rookie season). It is all the same
lowest-common-denomenator entertainment. Just like Stephen King is
         the McDonald's of literature.

I can see Bush, Pres. USA, George Michael, etc. joining Oprah. These
are the artists most of America will accept as excellent.

Is this sounding elitist? Yes. Am I slamming these kinds of artists
or their listeners? No. I like some of George Michael's stuff (don't
spend my money on it, though). I just don't want DT grouped there.

         Steve

p.s. For the uptight, this does NOT mean I don't want DT to gain
exposure or reap rewards.......I can't believe I need to put htis
         here...sheesh!!

Or whatever the Mike Bahr Tori boot is called (I can't remember the exact
name). I got the cd even though I had told Mike I had moved, but he sent
it to my old addresss. Luckily, it was forwarded ok...

Anyway on the the review. This cd is pretty good for an audience boot.
The only gripe is at time Tori sings so high or loud that it sounds
distorted. This isn't Mike's best work by far. Anyway it was done with a
cd recorder. The Tori version of Purple Rain was very interesting. I dont
think the audience knew what song it was until she sang the line where
the words purple rain are in...

    number 26 by the way....

once and have had no problems whatsoever. He
was able to get me CDs that no one else could

As far as email goes - yes, I get regular
mailings from CD Cellar now. I got six or seven
messages from CD Cellar just a few days ago.
When I do business over the internet I've come
to accept that these folks keep mailing lists

    I just thought I'd add my $.02.

    Open "mindless bantering":

Someone mentioned about the new Precious Things CD. Yes, Mike had one
Alpha and two Beta copies, which he sold. And yes, he did play one of the
Beta copies. It comprises of some of their new stuff when it wasn't
titled (some coming out of the Birch Hill show in June) Some of it was
from rarities that he managed to get his hands on (like LTL, LSOD, drum
solo and the band "noodling around") Also too, he has the first live
performance of the reworked ACOS which was played BEFORE it was officially
released last Sept. The production copy will be a treasure. If you do
not have one reserved, do so. I also managed to get a hold of Critical
Mass. Wow! Makes Exit..Stage Left sound like a boot that Rerun from
What's Happening! recorded. Mike, the quality of work you put out never
ceases to amaze me. :D Let me be the first to say thanks for all of your
    efforts.

The new YJ T-shirts by Gabbo. Buy one. For that matter, buy two. That way
you can wash one while you're wearing the other. Get them before they're
gone. (Luckily, I have all three generations of the YJ shirt to rotate
    through. :D )

Nathan and the dead dog. Good thing you swerved and missed it otherwise I
would have run it right down. True, if you did hit it, you wouldn't
have known with the bumpy ride of NY's highways anyway... Funny thing is
that when we dropped off Mojo, Nathan pulled into the driveway and we all
got out and bs'd for like 15 minutes. He kept the car idling. We all
decided to leave and when Nate jumped back into the car, not only did he
realize that the car was still running but it was still in gear!!!! Wow,
we know the true power of a Frod Expire. Can't coast forward when sitting
    in a driveway while idling...

The Con in general. Shame that not everyone was able (or willing) to go.
The band didn't show up but everyone had a good time anyway. Ibanez and
Syrinx played. Mike Bahr sung backup vox on TSM. I saw a video camera and
regular cameras floating around. Someone should put the group photos (and
other Con photos) up on dreamt.org... I had a lot of fun. I got to hang
out with a lot of cool people. Someone mentioned about the British guy
that was there. That was Tim Spear. After to Con, we all were starving
for food so we hit Roosevelt Field (which was a mall, go figure) and then
Q-Zar. The red team was just lucky that the green team didn't have their
bearings straight... The trip through Queens was interesting. Nothing
like being held up in traffic for a drug deal and almost getting T-boned
by an ambulance... Hung out with a lot of cool Jammers (I'm not gonna
name drop- besides there are ones I hung out with and didn't remember
their names so it would be unfair not to list them) and Jeff Chew did a
great job. Make that the whole staff did a great job. 'Nuff said.

I wonder if someone please could get it sampled into a .wav-file.
Because this ain't helping at all.
We all read in different things in those letters, due to our different
    nationalities and stuff.

Besides I know that no one on the other side of the dip knows how to
pronounce the Swede Yngwie Malmsteen, especially his first name. (Perhaps
    he doesn't know himself anymore..).

I don't think this made it through on the first try, and if it did I got
no responses, so here goes again:

Get thyself to the nearest music store, and if you can't, try a nunnery.
The new Tool album, Aenima, is simply one of the most impressive albums I
have heard all year (another one being Superior, of course). The complexity,
density, and depth of this work is hard to absorb all in one sitting, but
I've managed to do it a number of times now. These features lifted my
impression of Tool from that of their previous album, which, although I liked
it, often left me with a feeling like they had contrived the desperation and
gloom that is present throughout. Not so on this album... some of the
"characteristic" desperate Tool sound is still there, but it doesn't
dominate. That's where the musicianship comes in.

On the 'jam we've never discussed Tool as a "prog" band (please - no ad nauseum
discussion on what constitutes prog), and in fact we haven't discussed them
much at all. How many of you are familiar with their music? If Aenima is
any indication of the direction they're taking, we will probably see more
discussion of them here. I'll venture to say that on this album you'll hear
flavors of Soundgarden, Black Sabbath, a wee bit Pantera, and a lot of sounds
    uniquely Tool.

If for nothing else, get the album for the recipe in German, "Die Eier von
Satan": "...bei zwei hundert Grad fuer fuenfzehn Minuten backen... UND KEINE
    EIER!!!" :)

    Dear jammers,

Hey all! I have to say, YtseCon III was something else! Sorry I couldn't
write any sooner, swamped by midterms this week. Anyways, I'm really
sorry that Dream Theater couldn't come. I know that a bunch of you were a
bit upset about that. I tried my best to get them to come even while the
Con was going on, but I guess that wasn't enough.

It was extremely awesome to see you guys in person (some for the first
time), it was really really cool! I would like to thank the entire
YtseCon III staff (Chris, Greg, Rachel, Phil, Robb, Mike, Heath,
Babs, Trey). But, I think the biggest thanks goes to Pat Griffin, who
pretty much held the entire Con together while I was outside squaring away
everything with the hotel and bugging Derek Sherinian over the phone! All
of you guys did an awesome job!

    Q-Zar was cool....=)

All in all, the Con was really awesome, and I hope that there will be many
more to come in the future. Again, I'm really sorry taht DT couldn't make
it, I know that a lot of you were looking forward to seeing them, but I
guess it just wasn't meant to be.....this time =)

If any of you guys want to write up an article of what happened at the
Con, that would be really cool. I know that Neil Elliott is looking for
something like that to put into the next fanzine.

Well, I have another midterm tomorrow so I have to go study. It was
really cool, and I hope that the next Con will be coming up soon!

    Yours,
    Jeff =)
