Whats up guys,
Here is the setlist for week #3 of my stint as a student DJ here
at the College of Mount St. Vincent (Riverdale, Bronx). I had an
awesome time with this show because I found myself getting into the
songs (playing air drums, guitar, etc...) especially with "Hallowed Be
Thy name".....rather than worry about what I was going to say next..
Some freak actually had the nerve to call in and request
Nirvana!?!?!?!?! I'm right in the middle of "Winds of War" by the
immortal HELSTAR and this person wants me to play "Smells Like Teen
Spirit"....wretched fools!! needless to say, I politely declined, hung
up and dedicated my next tune "Analog Kid" (from the RUSH Tribute) to
those poor misguided souls adrift in a sea of mediocrity...Maybe I
should call myself the progressive shepherd??
anyhow here is my setlist..these bands RULE!!! check 'em out!
DREAM THEATER: "Metropolis"
FATES WARNING: "Monument"
JUDAS PRIEST: "Hell Patrol"
BLACK JESTER: "Symphonies of Immortal Winds"
KAMELOT: "Gleeman"
TWILIGHT: "Trial By Fire"
DEATH: "Crystal Mountain"
HELSTAR: "Whore of Babylon"
HELSTAR: "Winds of War"
RUSH (Tribute): "Analog Kid"
SCANNER: "Not Alone"
--(news break)--
LABYRINTH: "Mortal Sin"
LABYRINTH: "The Right Sign"
TESTAMENT: "The New Order"
MIND ODYSSEY: "Fire in the Sky"
WATCHTOWER: "The Fall of Reason"
IRON MAIDEN: "Hallowed Be Thy Name"
ICED EARTH: "When The Night Falls"
ELEGY: "Windows of the World"
I also have an hour on Thursdays now so I decided to make it an "epic"
showcase. In one hour I played three songs!!! Kind of freaked out a
few people but..screw 'em!
MASTERMIND: "Triumph of the Will" (17:50) <-- a masterpiece from the
brothers Berends
CLOCKWORK: "Weaving Webs of Time" (27:40) <-- Watch out for these
guys..THEY RULE!!!
FLOTSAM AND JETSAM: "Doomsday For the Deceiver" (9:11) <-- very tight
melodic speed riffing.. Can't believe Jason Newstead used to play in a
band this talented!
I can't stress CLOCKWORK enough though. I've only had their demo
"Weaving Webs of Time" for a week and it has floored me...a majestic
epic laced with neo-classical riffing, harmonized leads, awesome bass
and drums make it very tight, complex instrumentals between songs..what
I really like about this is that it NEVER gets boring..each interlude
has a totally different feel to it..one has some great piano runs,
another has great muting, etc, etc, ..you get my drift!!! Fastest 28
minutes I've heard.
Its so awesome that European bands like SUPERIOR and LEMUR VOICE are
receiving a huge amount of support from fans in the states. But c'mon!!
Lets help out more American progressive metal bands right here in their
homeland before they are forced to play only in Europe and Japan (like
ICED EARTH and KAMELOT!!) CLOCKWORK is from Pennsylvania and MASTERMIND
is from New Jersey....go to thier shows and check out their music!!!!
Its your loss if you don't :-)
'till next week,
Carlo (aka Fates, aka YtseSatan)

Hey there gang....
I was checking to see if there were any ytse jammers in the Louisiana area who happen to play guitar and would possibly be interested in joining a progressive metal band. (This isn't for me, but for a friend of mine). Email me if you are interested.
Thanks

So you've just bought Parallels by Fates Warning since you've heard all those guys on the mailing list and newsgroups talk about Fates Warning. You've never actually heard any Fates but you listen to plenty of Dream Theater and Rush.
You rush home to hear the CD, put it on, hit the play button, you don't hear anything too exciting, you think, it'll get better! You listen to the whole album and on the whole you weren't too impressed. You think to yourself, "Those guys are all smoking something if they think this is good stuff". So you opt to sell it or give it to a friend since it wasn't that great.
Ah, my dear friend, perhaps you haven't given it a chance!
Welcome to the Listening Guide. This guide will hopefully get you on your way to becoming one of the few but dedicated Fates Warning fans.
Let's start off by answering a few questions.
1. Is Fates Warning like Dream Theater?
Yes and no. They definitely have their own progressive style. Some of the textures of their songs are the same but Fates Warning is generally thought of to be a darker more brooding band, sometimes bordering on depressive.
2. What album should I start with if I listen to a lot of Dream Theater with lots of time changes and such?
You should probably start out with No Exit or Perfect Symmetry.
3. What are their earlier albums like?
Night on Brocken is more of a Maidenish type sound while Spectre Within they begin to break into the new mold. Spectre Within and Awaken the Guardian are more towards metal with progressive tendencies.
4. Why the change from Awaken the Guardian to No Exit?
They replaced singer John Arch with Ray Alder and thus their style began to change.
5. So how come I don't like Parallels?
In my opinion, Parallels is one of the greatest CD's made by any band. It's not the in your face time changes that are astounding, but as one person put it, it's a musician's music. The way the instruments blend and contrast, the way the songs are arranged, the very minor key changes.
6. Which album is the most progressive?
Many have argued this question but a large percentage will tell you Perfect Symmetry is.
Some facts:
* The current members are: Jim Matheos - Guitar Frank Aresti - Guitar Joe DiBiase - Bass Ray Alder - Vocals Mark Zonders - Drums
* The albums: Night on Brocken Spectre Within Awaken the Guardian No Exit Perfect Symmetry Parallels Inside Out
* Current record label: Metal Blade * Where they hail from: New Haven, CT * Currently on tour through 1995 with Dream Theater

Me again.
Just thought I'd add a few reviews over some new CDs that have come out these past few weeks:
Galactic Cowboys - Feel the Rage This is an OK CD that has cover songs from KISS (i think) and WINGS as well as a new tune and some live tracks. The Kiss cover is pretty cool and it reminds me of the days when GC did lots more of the cool backing vocals. The new song didn't really blow me away on first listen and everything else was decent. If you are a GC fan, get this...If you have never heard GC, get their s/t or Space In Your Face.
King Diamond 'The Graveyard' Basically in the same vein as King's Spider Lullaby CD. Maybe a bit cooler. King is a freako. I was cranking this up real loud and could only wonder what my family thought if they were walking around outside of my door when King starts that psychotic laugh. Pretty cool CD. Musically very neat, lyrically looney, vocally.....ummmmm, well it's King Diamond.
I also heard a bunch more cool stuff but haven't had enough time to digest it all for full reviews. Symphony X is cool, so was some other stuff that I will save for Another Day.
I have heard that ELEGY has a new CD out called "Primal Instinct". Does anyone know anything about this? Does it still have the old singer? I heard he quit. I hope not as he was FANASTIC!!!
oh yeah, Angra is cool too.

Well we all want DT more publicly appreciated, so here's a list of actions to take to make their existance known to society...
EXPOSING DREAM THEATER ```````````````````````````````````````````````
1) Get yourself a high powered cordless drill and go down to the nearest bus stop. Approach the nearest person waiting for a bus and begin drilling a hole in their foot. When they protest wildy at your actions, apologize sincerely and hand them a DT tape.
2) Steal someone's baby and take it into hiding with you. When the disturbed parents plead through the media for the safe return of their child, return it kindly and say, "The thing that amazed me the most about your child was this tape it had, it's got the most amazing music on it..". Little do they know it's actually a DT tape you made yourself. Give it to the parents kindly and walk away making no sudden movements.
3) Get yourself some fluffy bunny slippers, a thick bathrobe, a sleeping cap, a wheelbarrow and a book of sleeptime lullabys. Go to the nearest radio station and break into the DJ box. Before the DJ can react, whack the slippers on his feet, wrap him up in the bathrobe and slap the cap on his head. Refering to the lullaby book, sing him the sweetest song you can find until he falls asleep. Then place him in the wheelbarrow and take him to the roof of the station building and dump him over the edge sending him plunging to his sleeping death. Then return to the DJ box and play Pull Me Under over and over and over and over.....
4) Return to the same radio station some days later and give the new DJ a tape. Tell him it's the latest hit by dance sensation "La DooobaDoobie 2 X MaXImum DogyDoggyDogg Thuggs in Da Hous" called, "I wanna dance with your gangsta jam ohhh lalal baby, shoop de doop doop dadadadada lleleleledadadadad.........." Little does the DJ know it's actually LIE by DT.
5) Steal someone's wallet. Greet them on the street the next day and offer to buy them DT albums with their money you stole.
6) Go to a supermarket PA microphone and place your walkman headphones playing DT on the mic. When the store manager approaches you, apologize but continue playing DT over the PA. When the police arrive rip the mic. cords and all out of the desk and hide in the toilet and continue to play DT.

OK, as I remember about the Kuul movie Crossroads, Steve Vai played all the shredding parts(his and Ralph Macchio's) actually performed by characters, and Ry Cooder played the background music for the movie. I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure of this. BTW, for those not familiar with Ry Cooder, he has done a lot of great film music(many times for Walter Hill films). . .it's super-atmospheric, with a down-home sorta vibe. Very unique and very kuul. Sorry I won't be at the 'Con, but this saturday is Paintball day! :) Catch y'all at Prog Rock Nite. . .(Matt, shall we visit Suzy again next time???)

My kitchen? :P Seriously... I got insane one day and put black cow spots on all my white cabinets...then I got this milk commercial take-off poster that has a bunch of milk cows on it and says, "Got cookies?" :) Unfortunately, the folks back home took it as an "I like cows" signal and are now sending me all atrocities of cow mugs and wind chimes... ::retch::

Hello, fellow Ytsejammers (tm)...
Brian (rycher@xnet.com) tells us:
> As I'm sure some of you now, we are putting on a benefit concert >for Jason Becker and the Les Turner ALS Foundation and there has been >some changes that you all might want to be aware of. In case you >missed it, here's the main stuff:
(snipped some info; you all read it already)
>Date: Sunday November 17th, 1996 >Time: 2:00pm (Start Time Subject to Change) >Place: The Vic Theater 3145 N. Sheffield, Chicago > (Venue May Change)
Oh, this is truly unfair. First, the G3 Tour isn't coming anywhere near me, now I hear about this, with lots of my other favorite guitarists (and drummers, and bassists) playing, and it, too, is nowhere near me.
Seeing all this also puts me in mind of a rather more important question: How is Jason Becker doing these days? I haven't heard word one since the "Open Letter from Jason Becker" which I pulled off the 'net some two and a half years ago. Does anybody know? Brian, this query's primarily directed at you, since you obviously have got some connections going...
Next: the subject of drums and drumming...
(I've lost the original attribution, so I can't remember who wrote this originally...sorry)!
>>P.S. Portnoy says in the latest I&W fanzine that the songs he finds >>hardest to play are the simple ones like LSOAD and Another Day. Food >>[for thought].
Interestingly enough (since Lars Ulrich seems to be cropping up in these "bad drum solos vs. good ones"), Lars' earlier work was high-speed and frenetic for a very simple reason: he was so nervous about being on stage that he pretty much _couldn't_ play the drums any slower. In a recent interview, he said something along the lines of, "I'd just go up there and hit 'em as hard as I could, as fast as I could. I was too nervous to do anything else" (though this is nowhere NEAR the exact quote).
I'm no drummer (I have the interest, and perhaps the skill -- I've sat in a few times for friends who played drums and found themselves in a spot, but I have no access to a kit), but I also think Lars' present work leaves much to be desired. (Listen to the complexity of the beats in _And Justice for All_, then listen to _Load_; there's no comparison. Mike Portnoy, on the other hand, is taking the instrument to new levels with every new thing I hear from him.
End of snippets from other people; here's a topic I'd like to bring up m'self. (I'm relatively new to the Ytsejam, so if this's been discussed ad nauseum in the past, I'll just retire to a corner and don my flameproof gear). It concerns "A Change of Seasons," which I consider to be Dream Theater's crowning achievement thus far. The disc has gotten such heavy play in my player that the center spindle that holds the thing in place in its jewel box is getting worn and doesn't work too well anymore.
What I'm curious about, though: where exactly do the divisions (Part I, Part IV, etc.), fall in the song? Based on a whole bunch of listenings, I'd hazard to guess:
Part: Falls at: I. The Crimson Sunrise 0.00 (obviously) II. Innocence @ 3.50 or so III. Carpe Diem @ 6.54 or so IV. The Darkest of Winters @ 10.08 or so V. Another World @ 13.28 or so VI. The Inevitable Summer @ 17.20 or so VII. The Crimson Sunset @ 20.13 or so
Anybody else got ideas? If you want to set me straight, dig out those CD players, give it a spin and let me know.
I love this song (Part IV is my favorite) and it's helped me make at least two of my friends into Dream Theater fans. Not fanatics, yet, but I'm working on that.
Enough rambling. Comments, anyone?

Hey, my week has sucked and it could very well end in not going to the con after months and months of planning falls down the drain. I am sure you are all waiting to reply to this about how I bashed you all who weren't going, but it's not my fault. My ride ditched me. Shaft. Anyway, I got two responses from jammers about rides, and they're leaving right after the con, and I was hoping to stick around and hang with you guys. Thisdisappoints me. Besides, my phone crapped out this week, and it finally works, mysteriously, and after reading through 650 plus messages and not hearing anything, I am a bit disappointed. I thought I had friends here. Maybe I don't, I don't know. Maybe all my friends aren't going to the con after all. If anybody lives around here and wants to take along a passenger, email me, but I doubt I can do it now, since I have to find a substitute for my radio show and it is getting really short notice. If I have to, and the wondrful person who cdecides to take me along comes forth, I will jump through a hoop or two. If you guys don't see me at the con, and DT does show up, please please do me a favor. Give them my phone number, (908)263-6590, and tell them that I am a radio D.J. who really wants them to do an interview on my prog rock show, the only show in New Jersey who extensively plays their stuff. Please, have them get in touch. And if anybody wants to pay me a visit Saturday night after the con to cheer me up, that's fine, too. Call me.
I think this whole situation sucks. I had plans for months, and they're destroyed. I don't hold it against Fred, my ride, I'm sure things on his end were important to cancel, and I know he wouldn't do this wthout good reason, after all he made me the sick DT fan I am today. But still, that isn't much of a consolation. OH well, if you guys don't see me, at least meail me and say hi, and show a little support and party for me, will ya? And give me a call or something if you are interested in stopping by and you are in the New Jersey area, around exit 105 on the Jersey Parkway. Cut me a break, guys, OK? This is just not fair.

Hi all!! A-Ytseconnin' we will go...
In a true display of sick humour, the Delta Airlines people are making me get to the airport this morning at 5:00 AM for my plane ride to the Con. Watch for me to be dead on my feet til Saturday. :)
Bafu, Oliver's Twist is on the boot I did "Scenes From A Memory". It is the working title for a more common song, and the demo version contains a surprising instrumental segue, definitely worth the price of admission. I won't spoil the surprise.
To those looking to send DEMO TAPES to DT, such as Lucian Maena, there's no way anyone will give you the band members' home addresses, but their management will look at demo tapes, given the chance. PLEASE use this address with the UTMOST discretion. THIS IS NOT FOR FAN MAIL!!!! This address is for _business_ _only_. That goes for everyone. Unless you plan on opening for DT yourself or working for them on tour, do NOT send mail to this address: Focus Management, attn: Rob Shore 11 Penn Plaza suite 910 New York, NY 10001
I have some surprises for those of you at the con. I'll mention them here on the Jam in hopes it will entice people to come. :)
* Couldn't get a Subcon, but my friend wants me to sell his Acoustic Dreams at auction. It's #002. His asking opening bid is $100. We'll see what happens from there, if anything. I'm prepared to hand it right back to him and say "the price was too high, you moron"... or I'm prepared to say "well, one of the fans wanted it quite a bit, so it sold. I guess the CD number _does_ make a difference."
* The unique Alpha test print and all three Beta test prints of Precious Things will be available for sale, not sure what format yet. They _ARE_ more expensive to make than regular issue CDs, so I'm not sure what the opening price will be. It will be up to demand to find the selling price, just like it should be in any capitalist market. These discs ARE different from the final PT, and I'll explain how at the con. Both contain unique tracks only used in that printing, for various reasons.
* I saved all four Tori Amos: Inside The Storm prototypes for the Con. I'll sell for $25 each (regular price) unless more than 4 people want 'em. This disc _is_ long since sold out.
(by now you should see that I am simply trying to be as fair as possible to everyone, hopefully I'll be able to get a maximum number of people the bootleg gems they want the most).
* I saved a handful of Antiquities discs for those who missed out during it's original print run. This disc is also long since sold out.
* I went to Best Buy and got a few Lie singles in case anyone needs 'em. My BB is pretty good on price, only $13.99 ($14.68 with tax).
* Rush: Critical Mass is down to like 30 copies left, and I'm bringing ten in case there's interest. Also, I'm bringing a handful of WDATU and Scenes discs because there may well be non-Jammer fans there (thanks to the publicity in the Images And Words fanzine).
* I will bring my Magic: The Gathering deck in case anyone wants to play.
* See you all there! This kicks ass!!!
- Mike Bahr - durnik@goodnet.com - Scoobaca RULES!
BTW I won't be able to answer e-mail til Sunday night. I hope you all will pardon that.

I wasn't specifically talking about anyone, I was talking about all of the people who are trying to do things with a video that hasn't even been *made* yet. And the .avis that I make *are* compressed, I have the programs to do it.
>>If I want it distributed on CD-ROM, I have an HP CD-R, and I can do that >>myself. > >Too expensive . . .

I'm not trying to turn a profit from this tape, but camcorders are not high quality videos to begin with, and when you start makeing dubs of dubs of dubs of dubs, you start to see some major degredation. I'm just trying to keep them coming from one or two sources so no one gets a tape that they can't even make out.
>> But please just let this go until I actually *have* the tape made and >> know what to do with it. > >OK, I withdraw my offer. Sorry I tried to help.
I said to wait until I have the tape made. I haven't decided how to do this yet. If you want to make the files, you may still be able to, because I know I may not have the time for it. But I can't decide the best way to distribute a tape that hasn't even been recorded yet. Just wait until I have it done, or talk to Ryan Webb, he may have more time to work on this than I do, and more power to him.
