School #1: Play a beat, a rhythm, a thing for the audience to nod its
collective head to, both the drummers and the non-drummers alike. Play
several different beats if you want, but above all play something
comprehendable to anyone with a decent sense of rhythm. Paula Abdul's
drummer studied at this school.
School #2: Strike any and all percussive surfaces at full speed in a
frenzied barrage of sound to strike terror into the hearts of the drummers
in the audience. To hell with those who don't understand the techniques
you're attacking with power and intensity like so many jackhammers on
helpless asphalt. Rikki Rockett studied here, as I don't recall him doing
an actual beat for longer than three or four seconds the entire solo.
Alex Van Halen and Mike Portnoy are good examples of combinations. While
they both like to shuttle around and assault the crowds' ears with
seemingly random arrays of THWACKS! and DUBBADUBBADUBBAs, they also go
into rhythms every now and then which, if inclined, one could probably
dance to...

Why is it the best solo? simple..... "HEAH THE DRUMMAH GET
WICK-ED!!!!!!!!!!!" that brings in one of the most important aspects of
drumming into the solo.. the rhythm :) i mean the groooooove rhythm. i
also liked the By Demons Be Driven section on the I&W shows :) now if only
i could see them live... hah.

Hey Dale try not to get down on FW because of No Exit. I got it a while
back and it's ok, but I have been unable to get into it very much. I've
heard that some people claim IGOD to be the best metal song ever written,
but i just don't see it. I still don't like Fates as much as bands like
DT, QR, SG, LV, and Savatage, but Parallels and Inside Out are still very
good albums. Peace.

I don't know if you meant this sarcastically or not, but Rikki actually
is a really good drummer. He plays what is right for the song and has an
amazing feel for grace notes. He has actually been quite an influence on
my playing.
Some of

I love Poison and I love C.C., but that guitar solo blew chunks. It was
the only time that I sat down during whole show. I still can't listen to
the whole thing through on "Swallow This Live."
I thought it was neat when Rikki whipped out the kazoo and started kazooing a
long with his drums, though...
What about when that rack of percussion came down. It was like whole
other drumset.

WHOA!!!! Okay, now we've got to talk. Tommy (my all time favorite
drummer) pulled off an amazing solo. It displayed chops, sure, but that
wasn't the intent of the solo. The intent was to entertain, to keep
people who aren't drummers as entertained as those that were. That way,
people couldn't use the drum solo to go the bathroom or snack bar. One
thing about this solo that pisses me off is that I didn't think of it.
There is NO way to top that. Plus, me bungee jumped into the crowd from
his suspended drum set. That's cool. I thought "Back In Black" was a cool
idea. Again, the focus here is not on the audio, but on the visual.

Hey fellow 'jammers,
As I'm sure some of you now, we are putting on a benefit concert
for Jason Becker and the Les Turner ALS Foundation and there has been
some changes that you all might want to be aware of. In case you
missed it, here's the main stuff:
The 1st Midwest Jason Becker Guitar Mania
Benefit for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease)
Presented by: Toshi Iseda, Jason Becker Music, Over The Top!
Productions and The Les Turner ALS Foundation
Scheduled to Perform:
Eddie Van Halen Toshi Iseda
Zakk Wylde Micheal Angelo
Vinnie Moore Chip Znuff
Tony MacAlpine Dave Uhrich
Micheal Lee Firkins Steve Lukather
Richie Kotzen Billy Sheehan
Rod Morganstein
With More to Be Announced!!!!!
Date: Sunday November 17th, 1996
Time: 2:00pm (Start Time Subject to Change)
Place: The Vic Theater 3145 N. Sheffield, Chicago
(Venue May Change)
Tickets available soon through Ticket Master(tm)
This is an ALL AGES show
Any questions please contact Brian at (rycher@xnet.com)
The main changes are that this will no longer be a CD release
party as well. We want to make sure that this benefit stays just
that, a benefit. Making this wonderful show for a great cause into
a CD release party just didn't seem right so that has changed. Also,
Pat Torpey of Mr. Big will be drumming for Eddie Van Halen and Billy
Sheehan will be doing the bass. PLUS, there may be a surprise
vocalist at the show with Eddie, but I can't confirm that yet. Due to
the excellent response and feedback we have been getting, the show
may also have a venue change soon... but that is still not known.
Tickets should go on sale next week but the exact date is also
unknown. E-mail me and I will put you on the mailing list to get the
newest information regarding the show before it's posted to the rest
of the internet. Hope to see you at the show!!!

they have any others? I'd really appreciate the info!
>P.S. Portnoy says in the latest I&W fanzine that the songs he finds

The thing that makes these songs so hard (according to my drummer)
are the wild cymbal techniques Mike uses often during the slower
songs. Rapid high-hat counter rythmns or something like that.

I'm sure you listen to a wide variety of music and I can accept
anybody's reasoning for disliking anything as long as they've given
it a good try (and it sounds like you have).
>First off, I'm sorry if I insulted your tastes...that wasn't my

Nor my intention, but I feel that if everyone else has a right to harp
about the other bands that they like, so can we. There are many
artists I have been opened up to because of the 'jam and a few that I
have tried but failed to groove with. I'm not listing them because I
don't wanna start another argument. :-) Just don't rip on other
people's recommendations of bands just because you don't like them,
cuz "Music is in the ear of the beholder", or something like that.

I never actually even read those things. I used to when I was
reading my mail in the middle of class so I can attest to your need.
Did mine help?

Hey, guys,
A friend of a friend of mine is directing a play in NY somewhere and she
said that one of the guys who showed up at the audition claimed to be
ex-bassist for Anthrax. I'm a fan, but I don't know a lot about the earlier
days of the group. Was there a different bassist before Frank Bello? Or
has perhaps Frank Bello been recently kicked the way of Dan Spitz and I just
don't know about it? Or is this guy just full of shit? If anybody knows,
could you email me privately? This has really been bothering me.

I would like to know if it would be possible (if you know his address) to
inform me of Mr. Mike Portnoy's address. The reason being is that I would like
to if possible audition for him or send a demo tape to his address concerning
possibility for me to open up for their band Dream Theater when they will be y

I appreaciate your patience for looking at this letter.
My email is manea@hotmail.com
Greatfully yours,

Anyone have Dave Fernquist's e-mail address handy? Dave? You reading this?
What's this? Two guys arguing about Rush? I'd love to comment, but I'd
probably get thrown off the list. Yes folks, THROWN OFF THE YTSEJAM. THE
MAILING LIST FOR DREAM THEATER ENTHUSIASTS. ;)
Dang, that new R.E.M. disc is confusing. I can never tell if it's upside
down or what...
Someone please e-mail me explaining the recent references to a piece of
music called "Oliver Twist." If this is something I should recognize from
one of Mike Bahr's cds, I've been away from them for a while so I
apologize in advance to Mr. Bahr.
Did anyone record the G3 Rockline interview? Speaking of recordings, Rob
Barker, I sure hope you remembered to put the snippet of "This one's
called...Gemini" at the end of any clinic dubs you've made. Otherwise
people might think I'm nuts.
I have to agree that Yanni can swing when he wants to. "Swept Away" is a
great samba piece. And hey, polka will work too if you can get your body
to move that fast.
Oh yeah, everyone have fun at the Con! Even if there aren't limited-
edition maroon shirts! ;) Wish I could be there. Hint to anyone who hasn't
done this before: the fast-moving presence with the large backpack full of
merchandise is Mike Bahr. Try to cajole him into leading everyone in a
James LaBrie Workout. He knows ALL the moves. He TAUGHT LaBrie, man. Wanna
get his attention quick? Tape a rare Magic card to your palm when you wave
hello to him. ;)
Luckily I was able to make it to the Petrucci clinic in Boston this past
June (got about 30 pics to show for it and almost as many signatures),
where I met a bunch of the people on this list. But unless I'm getting a
ride in a company jet, repeating that level of travel gets ludicrously
taxing...in more ways than one. At least this time around I won't have to
continuously be looking over my shoulder for all the friendly neighborhood
ytsejammers who "want to kick Bafu's ass, man!!"

Gosh, Pat, I hope you're not talking about me. I offered to create a
