For a good example of mood displays in techno, check out Moby.
Granted, it's more rave-oriented at times, and industrial at times, but
it does have noticeable amounts of emotion in it.
Thanks for the info on inside out. I plan on getting it sometime in

ever saw you. When you showed up you were already drinking.....so
don't blame us!! Besides, I didn't get my tongue stuck in the
    elevator....ummm, ring any bells????
Besides, Mike P. didn't seem to mind the shot of JD we did with him.....I
didn't care for it much but he seemed to like it...........As for the wedding,
those poor souls. I'll have to post some of my photos from the first CON,
you can really see Babs's purple eyes........(blood shot to the max) , :^)
So, for now, I plead the 12th or something like that........Maybe I should

First off, I'm sorry if I insulted your tastes...that wasn't my intention
    while praising Yanni.

I'm not going to go off on people's opinions or all that...I think its
been put pretty clear here several times in the past. You can like what
you want, I like what I want, we all like Dream THeater...thats the
    important thing here right?

    Anyway, I don't have any credit-hours in musical theory, and I don't
know a whole lot about doing tricks and loops on violins. I know a
little about the piano, but I really suck at playing. Maybe Yanni
isn't a great composer based on the opinions of the musically
edjucated...I'm not one of them, I don't know.

The point is, I like Yanni's stuff because its got a good rythm, and
carries emotion (with me at least). Personally I think thats the most
    important thing.

If you enjoy someone on gutiar, slamming a muted E,
screamming "fuck fuck fuck fuck!!" at the top of his lungs, and that
carries it for you, then awesome!! If it theoretically doesn't fit the
description of good composition, oh well...I don't think that has much
to do with whether its good or bad taste

    Tell me what you think...

Ok, this one is for Syrinx and anyone else who decides to follow his
lead. The first time someone bad a crack about Irene and I heading
upstairs with the video camera, I found it amusing. I laughed. When I
read Syninx' post, I stopped laughing. There's a fine line between being
funny and being needlessly crude and offensive, and Mike managed to cross
    it.

Irene and I's sex life, or in this case, unfortunate lack thereof, is no
one's business but our own, so could everyone else maintain the dignity
you still have and not perpetuate this thread any more than it has been?
    Thank you.

    ---------

And again, all of these people who have great marketing scemes for the
Con video, just lay off for now. If someone else does a video, talk to
them and see if they will let you do all this stuff. But I want as much
control over this as possible when it's my tape that's getting out
there. I have copies of the LiT vid and the PPV show, and the quality is
less than great. If there are going to be a ton of copies of the Con
tape out there, I would prefer that as many of them as possible be second
or third generation, rather that the distored bootlegs I seem to get
ahold of. If I want it in .avi format, I have the Diamond Stealth, and
I'll do it myself. If I want it distributed on CD-ROM, I have an HP
CD-R, and I can do that myself. But please just let this go until I
actually *have* the tape made and know what to do with it.

    ------

As for the guy that mentioned doing QuickTime, I would love to, but I
haven't been able to find any shareware editor/compiler/compressor to
make QT files, and I'm not spending hundreds of dollars on a devleopers
kit. If you know of a shareware/freeware QT creator, for God's sake,
email me and tell me where to get it... I would love to have it... Thanks.

    ------

Sorry about all this. I have three days worth of stuff to do in 5 hours
if I expect to get some sleep before my flight to NY tomorrow.

Hell yes!! Another day is alot tougher than it appears, but sometimes simple
is simple and lately Lars is playing like pinocchio. I was entirely
disappointed when I went to see Satriani a couple of months ago and he had
Jonothan Mover playing live. His drum solo was almost all of the
budda-budda-budda tom and bass drum crap that you learn in the first twenty
seconds behind a set. Of course people still loved it but I felt it a bit
cold. I was really (yes, really) looking forward to possibly hearing Manu
Katche who did some great playing on the JOE SATRIANI album. I would like to
know the band lineups for the G3 tour if anybody knows, (dallas oct20).

I bought Lemur Voice -insights just a few days ago and its ok, I'll have to
let it grow on me. The pronunciation should be Lee'-mur and it case you
didn't go look it up like I did.... it is a small animal, AND it means -
ghosts or specters, and LEMURES: is a rom. myth meaning "the night walking
spirits of the dead". hmmm... so I guess that means they have day jobs.

I want to get ahold of Spock's Beard... is this distrubuted by anybody or is
it pretty much a mail-order offer?

    Hmm.

1: Didn't know anyone had posted about you and irene's sex life b-fore.

2: it's called sarcasm, dude. if it offended you, it was not my intention, but take it in the way it meant, and hey, you won't get offended as easily.

3: it _WAS_ funny. true, from looking at it in the perspective it was in you may not have found it that way but hey, that's entertainment. funny, tho. who's to say i crossed a line? what is this line? there's a fine line between tasteless humor and sarcastic witty humor, and i like being straddled on both sides. next time you have a problem, e-mail me and say "what did you mean by this?" before you go off on a little tangent. wow. i'm blabbering on. this has got to stop.

i just heard that joke a few weeks ago, and you left out the spider that has the web that the fly will get caught in if it flies down six inches. that would let the spider eat the fly, then the fish would get the spider. also, i heard it that the cat got the mouse, but the hunter got mad at the cat and threw it into the lake. ;oP the first time I heard that joke, i died laughing. . . You can't go wrong with either Perfect Symmetry or Parallels. More progressive, less metalish. Inside Out is great, but it's kind of a dark album (what, Jim Matheos writing dark music? No!). Fates Warning are the masters of subtile complexity, IMNSHO. Parallels out Queensryches Queensryche. ||s took me the longest to get into, but it is my favorite. I liked PS the first time I heard it. > Definitely SG on top. Altura impressed me a lot, although not as consistent > as SG. Rating Cairo and Magellan is IMO more a matter of taste. You like Altura and don't like Superior? Are you on crack??? (rhetorical) I think Altura, while having potential, lack both direction and focus. don't be fooled if Superior sounds simple, it's not. These guys are fantastic songwriters. Tainted Silence and Total Void have to be two of the greatest rocks songs ever! > Would you consider Enchant more as a progressive ROCK band or progressive > METAL band...?

Progressive Rock. Kind of like "Rush lite". But they are pretty damn good.

(just thinking about this topic causes me to become long-winded. skip now or forever hold your fire. oops, a Firehouse reference. sorry.)

Gosh darnit, the best drum solo I've ever heard was Mike Portnoy on the Awake tour. I don't know if it was those wacky strobe lights flashing in a circle around his kit or what, but the whole thing was quite a phenomenal auditory presentation. (someday we'll have an aural counterpart for the word "display.")

Honorable mention goes to the drummer on Paula Abdul's "Under My Spell" tour. He was a somewhat muscular black dude who was having more fun behind his kit than David Letterman heckling a guest who speaks with an accent. This guy did the most slammin' rhythms I had heard in a long time. I don't remember his name, but he tore it up and off. The same could be said of Janet Jackson's drummer during her "Rhythm Nation 1814" tour.

Then there was Rikki Rockett (geez, I list the drummers, you know what concerts I've been to). He was really...what's the word...fast. Some of what he did made sense to me, but I was so amazed with C.C. Deville's ten-minute all-classical guitar solo that Rikki's torrent of thunder quickly faded in my mind. Being relatively new to, and much entranced by, the electric guitar, I of course had my guitar-blinders on, which didn't allow me to really focus on non-guitar instruments. :) I thought it was neat when Rikki whipped out the kazoo and started kazooing along with his drums, though...

But what about bad drum solos? What about solos that take up time? Here I would have to mention Lars Ulrich from the black album tour and Tommy Lee from the "Dr. Feelgood" tour. Maybe these guys have chops in their spare time, or maybe I just caught them on the wrong tour, but their solos were a waste. Comedic at best. Lee decided to suspend himself from the ceiling in a bizarre drum "cage" and "drum along" to some of his "favorite jams." "These guys were like, 'Goin at it upside-down was pretty cool, man. But Tommy... How the FUCK...are you gonna top that?' Well here I am, guys." --Tommy Lee, making his drum-solo entrance some 80 feet above the crowd

So... As if "Back In Black" weren't cool enough already, Tommy Lee was gracious enough to match the rhythm hit for hit. So what. Show me what you've created. Covers are one thing, but in my opinion (as a non-drummer, mind you) doubling the drum track isn't what you ought to fill your solo spot with.

As for Metallica, I think what stifled Lars' solo on that particular tour was when that really tall singer started playing on that second kit, sort of to give the impression that he was "dueling" with Lars. Oh yeah, his name was James Hetfield. In my opinion (as a non-drummer, mind you), that whole idea really brought Lars' solo down a notch, if not several notches. Kind of like John Myung grabbing a guitar and dueling with Petrucci. Now of course I've never HEARD Myung play an electric guitar, but somehow I don't think Petrucci would be sweating as he reached down into the bottom of his bag of tricks to survive Myung's suddenly-virtuosic onslaught.
