I'd say that they are, to the people who enjoy them, I know that people I
know describe the stuff as emotional, at least the ones who listen to
TripHop and stuff (kinda more musical that your normal Gansta' Rap), but on
the other hand, I feel that most of the songs that are played just are
catchy, with one riff that drives the song, and have no build up parts, I
think the only artist here in Europe that has been able to create moods in
techno is the guy in U96 (or whatever that band is called), he has build up
parts and stuff in the songs that makes it able to feel emotional (saying
this, I'm the guy who starts to shriver when ever I hear the minor9 chord
that Petrucci uses all over DT records)... Do I make sence?? What I'm trying
to say, is that I think that certain harmonies can make a song emotional
(for example Robert Miles's songs).... What do you other guys think???

You're right there. His playing is also very simple on the Black album, and
he had his big kit then. When you hear his earlier stuff he's a lot more
complex. He was interviewed recently in Rhythm magazine and he said he was
    consciously trying to play simply.

It all comes down to playing what is right for the song. DTs music wouldn't
be the same without Portnoy's complex drumming, but playing like that in
every song is unnecessary. Knowing when to lay back and just play a simple
groove is just as (if not more) important as actually being able to play
    the complex stuff.

P.S. Portnoy says in the latest I&W fanzine that the songs he finds hardest
to play are the simple ones like LSOAD and Another Day. Food for thought...

    Cheers... Edd.

Let it be known that on this day, October 8th, 1996, Pat Daugherty has
decreed it to be so that any descriptions of Real Life shall now be
synonymous with "whining," and will be shunned. Furthermore, if anyone on
this list knows anyone else on this list in Real Life, they may neither
joke about the other nor mention the other's name in a post to this list.
To do so would constitute "whining."

This is a good idea, You only have to make the taping once and then put
it on (Yours/someones) web site and let everyone interested download it,
but please do it in segments...

    Hi all

for all of you piss-artists going to the Ytsecon(dom) at the weekend, here is
a little cocktail that you might like to try at your own danger. I stumbled
upon in (and after it) earlier this week.

The Blue Shark (sounds almost like Zappa's last album)

    1 measure tequila
    1 measure vodka
    1 measure blue curacao

Mix, serve on ice, wait for head to explode. (Could this mark the return of the
    Ytse drinking game?)

Drink four or five of these babies and you'll be happy when Green Day turn up
to give the world premiere of Metropolis II played on comb and paper.

Anybody heard anything by either of these bands: Dreamryche or Queenstheater?

    stay safe and happy listening

OK, I might be stupid and all, but why can't everybody have good subject
lines? I am increasingly pressed for time of late and I only scan the start of
each 'Jam to see if subjects appeal to me. Especially a "Re: Ytsejam #xxxx"
line says NOTHING and is therefore skipped.
I am probably not the only one with this approach. Come on, people, we are a
bunch of progressive people, and to get your thoughts across you have to
advertise what your thoughts are by using a decent subject line that will
immediately attract those that feel 'aroused' by it.

Incidentally, I hope mine was any good.

I would call Superior progressive metal...

If he would be willing to do this. I would be willing to offer to put these onto a CD for anyone who would want one. There would be a nominal charge to cover the costs of the blank CD's and shipping. It would probably would be ending up at about $15 or so.

Also, for those of you who might be wondering about the DT tape tree. I am going to be putting the structure out tomorrow.

Heard this joke the other day. It's seems longer that probably should be, but I'm paraphrasing a little:

Well, there was fish who noticed a fly just above the water and said, "You know, if that fly would drop just six inches, I'd be able to jump out of the water and grab it."

Meanwhile, a bear was watching the whole scene and uttered, "If that fly would drop just six inches, the fish would jump out of the water, grab the fly and I'd be able to grab the fish."

Of course, a hunter saw all of this: "If that fly would drop just six inches, the fish would jump out of the water, grab the fly, the bear would go after the fish and I'd be able to shoot the bear."

A mouse was nearby: "If that fly would drop just six inches, the fish would jump out of the water, grab the fly, the bear would go after the fish and while the hunter was busy shooting the bear I'd be able to steal the hunter's lunch.

Enter, the cat: "If that fly would drop just six inches, the fish would jump out of the water, grab the fly, the bear would go after the fish, the hunter would shoot the bear, the mouse would steal the hunter's lunch and I'd be able get that mouse."

Sure enough, the fly dropped six inches. Well, the cat darts out, overruns the mouse and goes sliding into the lake, completely drenching itself.

The moral of the story: Wherever there's a fly that's willing to drop six inches, there sure to be a wet pussy to follow...

    :)

If you thought this was offensive, imagine my surprise when the WOMAN told me the punch line!

I know part of this has been said before, but here goes again. Please don't insult people's taste. To the guy who likes Yani, I've been studying music theory for a while now. I don't like Yani's music nor believe that he has much tallent going into it. I don't admire the violinist who played with him because she stayed on the same blues scale runs for most of the music and then did little bow tricks. Even though I really don't like this music, I don't think you have bad taste. If you could prove me wrong, perhaps my mind would be opened, or perhaps I would still dislike them. Be well and take care. M B

Fellow jam readers, I got Spock's Beard yesterday in the mail. As you know, this has a recommndation from Mike Portnoy. Knowing this, at first listen, it was not what I expected. I expected Animal on the drums and radical time sigs and such. So after the first listen I just sat there, not knowing whether to wind my watch or scratch my ass. Now this is not a bad thing, I just wasn't expecting what I heard. This was last night. Today, I brought it to work and have been listening to it non-stop for about 4 hours, which is about 4 times.

I can now say I like this, no REALLY LIKE this album. It is VERY different from anything else I have. The closest comparison I can come to this is Saga meets Steeley Dan while listening to King Crimson. Now, I never liked SD and Saga has just been OK with me. But there's something about this that keeps me wanting to listen to this over and over. I have had some positive comments from colleagues that hear this over my Dilber cube.

I agree with the guy who said the production is like listening to them in your living room. Not overproduced or underproduced. Everything is quite clear.

I will conclude this mini review with a recommendation to get this when and if you can. Very interesting stuff.

    Later, Wilmo
