If you want to see a drum solo that'll make your head spin, check
out Terry Bozzio's Soloing Over Ostinatos. My drum teacher loaned
this to me over a year ago and I still can't play most of it.
Difficult, yet musical.....the finest aspect of music.

Mike Portnoy, and even Neil Peart, by comparison, are POOR
soloists. Mike tends to play difficult groupings of notes on
the kicks and toms, but nothing he does is in this league.

And to those who said that soloing on a five piece is dull, I'd
like to direct your attention to guys like Bill Bruford and Dennis
    Chambers.

    That is all.

Some of the riffs do get redundant. But it is definitely still a rock
album. Alot of these songs remind me of "Mudkicker" from "Slave," which
is too bad because it is my least favorite song on that album, though a
much better song than most bands can come up with.

Sure there are some ok tracks but nothing
    > really strong - "Beat Yourself Blind" is really stupid, just a waste of time.
    >
I don't it's a stupid song. The verse is awesome, as is the bridge. The
chorus is the real week link. I'm sure they could have thought of
something better, or at least less repetitive. But it's not a total write
off. The lyrics are pretty cool otherwise.

    > Now don't get me wrong - they are a great band!! I just can't
    > imagine Sebastian going off and running around the stage to one of these
    > new songs.

When I saw them in L.A. on this most recent tour, the new songs came off
REALLY well, much better than they did on the album. Oh, and when
Sebastian introduced "Beat Yourself Blind" he said, "This next song isn't
    about masturbation but...."

To me the drumming sounds grungy

I have to disagree here. The drumming on this thing is the best that Rob
has laid down yet. The end of "Face Against My Soul" says it all.

Their debut album is one of the
    > best debut albums I have ever heard - I think I like this alot better
    > than "Slave.." where they took a heavier approach.
    >
I have to disagree here again. As I said in an earlier post, I think that
"Slave" is one of the best rock albums EVER. The first album was great,
and definitely one of the best debuts I've heard, but they came into
their own with "Slave." It's heavier, but it's also better (the two do
    not necessarily go hand-in-hand).

And who said they were glam - no way - Sebastian got rid of the
    > makeup before he joined Skid Row - they are just a rock band .
    >
I agree. Besides, I've always thought of glam as an image, not a style of
    music.

Please, everyone who's jumping on this one, STOP. All I know at this
point is that Irene and I will be taping some of the Con, I don't know if
I will have the time or ablility to make multiple copies for everyone,
and I know that she won't. Please just wait for this one, and when I'm
ready to let everyone know, I'll post about it.

As far as the idea for makeing .avis of the video, this is something I
was already concidering. I have a Diamond Stealth 64 2201 TV card with
2MB of RAM, and I can do .avi capture. I can do this myself if I decide
to... I just haven't decided yet. But I promise you'll all be the third

There's a new lyric file for my CD player on my WWW site for
Journey's new single. It's only been tested on the US single for
    When You Love a Woman.

If you need a copy of my CD player, go to
    http://www.monmouth.com/~rquezada/home.html

The lyric files are located at
    http://www.monmouth.com/~rquezada/RQs_CDLyric.html

You can find a link to the lyric file page from the CD Player WWW page.

The new version is almost finished. I hope to have it finished
by October 22. It supports multiple CD drives, JPEG pictures, and
    track programming.

BTW, does anyone know a Journey mailing list?

Yes, I am listening to the album right now!!! Yeah it is a little early for
Christams music, but since I have been finishing up the TSO web site I
figured it only fair to be listening to the music while working.

Yes it is a concept album from beginning to end. I keep finding new things
of interest in the story each time I listen. It probably took 2 or 3 good
listens for totally fall in love with it.

CHECK OUT THE TSO WEB PAGES AT:

            http://www.winternet.com/~savaweb/tso

The album will be released October 15th. Soon after that they will begin
shooting a Video for "Christmas Eve / Sarajavo 12-24" which is included on
    both TSO and Savatage's DWD.

Unfortunately Zak only gets to sing backing vocals on one song, "A Star To
Follow". I really wish he had gotten more visible parts, but that is the
way it is I guess. The vocalists are great on this album and there is quite
a number of them. I belive most of their back grounds come from the
broadway scene but I may be wrong on that.

Here is a list of primary vocalists. (not including backing vocals or the
    childrens choir)

    John Margolis
    Marlene Danielle
    Micheal Fawcette
    Thomas Faresse
    Ken Williams
    Babi Floyd

If you know the backgrounds of any of them, let be know. Thanks..

I just got Fates' No Exit the other day, and am not too sure what to
think about it. I haven't given it a real good listen yet, but so far,
I'm just not sure. This may be a good sign if I really get into it
    later. I just don't know.
So far, I do really like Dead Winter Dead, though (I've listened to it
    a bit more).
Any other Fates albums anybody recommend (and why, of course)? Even if
I don't end up getting into No Exit, I'll still be interested since I've
heard a lot about them here, and really dig their version of "Closer to
    the Heart" on Working Man.

    Hi ytsedoods,

Definitely SG on top. Altura impressed me a lot, although not as consistent
as SG. Rating Cairo and Magellan is IMO more a matter of taste. I have yet

What was described is a pretty close match to what Portnoy said himself. I vote you put the description in the faq.

    > Now, here's what I want to know. How well did Mike sing? :)

In spite of his nicotine-thrashed, naturally deep voice, he sang quite well! I was surprised. It sounded like he was smiling through the whole thing. In fact, when I first heard it I wondered why Portnoy had never done backup vocals on any of their albums. Am I the only one on this list who has a recording of this event?

(For further listening, I believe there is a version of The Silent Man somewhere where you can hear Portnoy doing the backup vocal part, and he does the harmony above LaBrie in a spot or two.)

    "DIRECT HIT!!"

    Hi!

/me bows to King Bafu. :)

If there are some jammers in Belgium, Superior will be playing an 20 min. Accoustic Set at the Metal Convention in Antwerpen at November 10th. I'd be happy to meet you there.

    Tracklist:

Why (Accoustic vers.) Dreamtime Tomorrow's Eve (Accoustic vers.) 1 more song... don't know yet if it will be a cover or a song of the Timeshift Tape...

On to another topic... I got an email from a French guy that bought our CD and besides that he likes the CD [:)] he told me that he thinks that it was "courageous to make a heavy metal record in 1996". This brought me to the question what kind of music is not courageous to do in "1996"... Tekkno? HipHop? I don't know. But this brings me to another question... Are these music styles (for example Tekkno or HipHop) also able to create emotions like - let's say - rock music does? When I switch on the radio here in Germany, all I hear is Tekkno, Rap, and sometimes a normal pop song. I don't want to say here that those music styles are worse than others. This is all a matter of taste, naturally. But I think there is just no twisting people around in different emotions in this music. The only music I know who is able to do this, is the "traditional" music that is played with "traditional" instruments. I include here Punk same as classical music. I hope, you get the point what I want to say here and maybe that you can give me some feedback on this topic. Do you think too, that there are many songs "on the air" at the moment that just don't have any emotions in them? I think it's a bad sign for the music scene if emotions are no longer put into popular music because music IS something emotional. Don't you think? A good example for this is naturally too the music of DT. Take Voices for example. There is a steady up and down in this song and I think THAT's what music is supposed to be and that's why I like that song. Or take LTL or .... just DT. :)

What else? Do you think that the music of SUPERIOR is "Heavy Metal"? I think that "Heavy Metal" is the music that was done for example by Judas Priest or is still done by Manowar and those bands. I don't think that we play Heavy Metal. It's realy hard to find a definition for music but I'd say that we play hard, progressive, heavy rock music. Am I the only one? Give me a definition... :)

    Ok. All for now.

    Bye.

    Bernd.
