What would you label "Subhuman Race" as? It's definately not a
"rock" album like their first two albums - totally different sound and
alot of the riffs are boring. Sure there are some ok tracks but nothing
really strong - "Beat Yourself Blind" is really stupid, just a waste of time.
Now don't get me wrong - they are a great band!! I just can't
imagine Sebastian going off and running around the stage to one of these
new songs. To me the drumming sounds grungy and so does the bass effect
used at the start of one of the tracks. Their debut album is one of the
best debut albums I have ever heard - I think I like this alot better
than "Slave.." where they took a heavier approach.
And who said they were glam - no way - Sebastian got rid of the
makeup before he joined Skid Row - they are just a rock band .
See ya - Brenden

The problem is that not only does Lars have a small kit, but he doesn't
do very much with it either. I'm not saying that a drummer should play
like a maniac through every song, but I wish Lars would do *something* a
bit different now and then. OK, he does the odd fill or whatever
occasionally but nothing which actually grabs your attention.

What's up, folks? Haven't posted for a while, but it's exam week, and I need to procrastinate. Have a few things to mention, 2 DT related, and two not. First:
> I said yes and he said "I went to school > with their drummer." Just as I started to get excited he told me that > this guy went to Columbia College, graduated in 1993, and was 'newly > hired' as Dream Theater's drummer at about the time of his graduation. > Did I miss something? Was Dream Theater pondering a drummer change, are > there more than one 'Dream Theater', or is someone just telling some damn > lies?
I graduated CC '93, and I certainly didn't know Mike Portnoy. I also played guitar in a band and knew every drummer in the class (I think there were 2) and I have no fucking clue what this guy is talking about.
2. About AMBI, among the many different concepts of what the song is about, I don't think anyone mentioned the possibility of the song being about a schizophrenic man and his struggles to remain sane. First of all, Erotomania; all you guys know what it is (someone who thinks a famous person is in love with them), and it's one of many schizophrenic symptoms. Second, Voices: the song repeatedly mentions "Voices discussing me", etc., which sound an awful lot like voices within his head. Hell, he even says, "These voices in my head keep saying. . .". Also a symptom of schizophrenia. Next, he mentions "Now they read my mind on the radio" and "Seen my diary on the newstand". It's common for schizophrenics to think that radio/tv has messages specifically for them, or the paranoid-type delusions mentioned in the song.
Lastly, (and most interestingly), I came across a book called "A Mind That Found Itself" (sound familiar?) by C.W. Beers in my psychopathology class. This book, written in 1921, is an autobiography about this man's life as a schizophrenic, in and out of mental institutions (which were much worse than they are today). I couldn't actually find much to do with the song, execept one section, in which the author decided to simply stop talking as a way to deal with the outside world, which could be the inspiration for the Silent Man.
I definitely don't think this explains all of the song, but it's a start (and I hope this hasn't all been said before).
Next, the non-DT stuff. My band, 3250, is on the new DREGs of the Internet CD, and I really think most of you guys would really dig it. There's a lot of variety on there, though most leans toward the softer side of prog--don't despair, there are a few tracks that are quite heavy (including the contribution from my group, I might add). All of the stuff is really interesting though, and I was impressed of the quality of most of the recordings. I'd be interested in hearing what all you discerning listeners have to say about it!
Last thing--the new Tool album is INCREDIBLE. I liked Undertow, but that honestly pales in comparison to the new one, which is much more diverse and ambitious. The artwork is cool as hell to boot, so how can you lose?
Time to go back to the books (med school is occasionally not fun), Sorry for the length, dario

Well . . . . here's another idea to go along with that . . .
IF - big if - If Pat or someone can send me a copy of that 8mm tape of the Con, I can make video files of the highlights and distribute them to everybody who has a 486 or better computer running Windows 3.1 or 95. A couple of you have seen the Tori Amos performance I captured this way (from the Letterman show last week). I have an Alaris Quick Video card that captures video and stereo sound from either live TV or from tape. Come to think of it, I could roll my entertainment center over to the computer and capture from VHS, too, if I had to. I'd prefer the 8mm tape cause that's what my camcorder uses, and it's already hooked up to the card. The idea is to make some highlight clips, and put them on a server on the Web somewhere, or send 'em out thru E-mail. These files are called Videograms, and the player is built into the .exe file - you just double-click on the filename and it plays. Now the catch - the default viewing window is only 160 x 160 - pretty small, but the quality is good, and the sound is excellent. You can resize the window, but it gets awful grainy. The files are pre-compressed (for example, a 60-second clip creates an .avi of about 25 MB, which is compressed to about 1.5 MB in the Videogram (including player). The entire Tori song was 7.72 MB, and we managed to send it as an E-mail attachment, though my ISP hiccuped a few times before it finally worked.
So . . . lemme know if anybody's up for this (or is it "down for that" - I'm so confused),
Larry
BTW, I would return the original tape, of course. And I might be able to put the file(s) on my son's new Website. I could also dub this onto VHS for anybody who prefers it that way.

When I first got back at school I posted a question to see if any one wanted to resume the project email me or something. At this same time, Rush was going through legal trial with their tribute, The Working Man. sooooooo, no one really took it seriously, but no one said "No, cus we'll get in trouble," either. Personal note, I still have all the info, so if any body wants ta...... I believe that this thing would still be so small scale that it would be like DT trying to hunt down all the cover bands that do a song or 2, in other words why would they bother?

Hmmm, taping the con and doing that videograms stuff...you know I can download that. If I've downloaded 33mbs in one file, i dig 7mbs even 10 and the easy way. Also if they made copies of it on tape instead of the videogram stuff I'd even pay for a copy. A good one. So whatever you guys are doing , I'm up with it. Later! Yeah, I thought of recommending that one, but avoided it because it, just the same as Reflections On Passion, is a sort of greatest hits album. Then again, for someone who isn't really familiar with an artist's material, I suppose greatest hits albums are the way to go, to get a broad feel for the music while avoiding the less-than-favorite cuts. Actually, Reflections On Passion was my second addition to my Yanni collection; the first being Dare To Dream. So you have a good point there, Chuck.
Next topic.......
For those of you listening to Lemur Voice, is it just me, or does track 6 (Alone) at time 3:10 kind of remind you of that part of Natural Science towards the end of Tide Pools? Just wondering.
Another word about Lemur Voice: I was playing it a bit ago and my roommate, who is not yet converted (I'm trying!) asked if this was Lemur Voice I was playing. I said yes. She said, "I kind of like this.....I think I like it more than Dream Theater." That's really what she said.
And for those of you who haven't figured it out yet, I'm "Spine" on IRC.

On DRFSR, I'll agree. But some definite maturing went into the making of "Cherry Pie," as seen in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "Song & Dance Man."
> I am extremely interested in seeing if the Skids stay with Bob Rock. > I hate him (as mentioned in previous Metallica posts).
I doubt it. I don't think that the Skids will be able to afford him after "Subhuman Race." He's actually a REALLY good producer (he did Moltey's Dr. Feelgood and that album still kicks my ass). But I think they should either go back to Michael Wagner (which is my first choice) or try someone new like Peter Collins, or maybe even Glen Ballard.

Those credited with "Vocal Solos" are John Margolis, Marlene Danielle, Michael Fawcette, Thomas Faresse, Ken Williams, and Babi Floyd (none of these names strike a bell with me off hand). There is also a children's choir. But I would still recommend getting it, even if you only like Savatage a little. Jon Oliva's arrangements are as insane as ever.
