I found out about it on a conference call on 7/30/96. I'm still bitter.
But I did read an article in Metal Edge prior to that in which they said
something to the effect that they were well aware of the rumors, but that
they weren't as far as they knew, true. But then again, the interviews
you see in Metal Edge and most rock magazines are done a month or two
    before they hit the stands.

BTW, in other Atlantic news, ALL SAVATAGE FANS LISTEN UP: Very soon there
is going to be a release by a group called Trans-Siberian Orchestra
called "Christmas Eve And Other Stories." This album is partly the
brainchild of Savatage's JON OLIVA and features guest appearances by none
other than Al Pitrelli and Zak Stevens. It is best described as a heavy
metal Christmas concept album. Think of it as "Dead Winter Dead" meets
"Jingle Bells" and you get the idea. There is a story line which contains
both original songs and reworked versions of Christmas standards. Some of
the arrangements are very Savatage-esque and will blow your mind.
Speaking of which, Savatage's very own "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24"
turns up here and is not out of place, which gives you an idea of what
kind of album this is. I've heard it an it is unbelievable. Imagine: a
heavy metal release by a major label. Who would have thought. Anyway,
look for it under "Symphonic Rock Christmas" sections in your record
    stores. You won't be disappointed.

When I first listened to "Alligator," I found myself thinking, "Is this
'Phase II'? Him soloing over this I-IV-V thingy until the end of the
album?" Then when the song went back to vocals I wondered if there was a
bonus disc I could order to hear the original fifteen-minute solo Vai
    obviously had in mind. :)

    > The weeny track is cheesy, though.

Actually, if you replace the word "weeny" with "whammy," it almost sounds
like the confessions of a shred guitarist...

Even though I could have made the time to stay current on the jams, I let
them pile up for a bit. Go figure! I haven't posted in a while and do have
some stuff to say about some recent threads...

I wanna meet all you crazy mofo's, and see some of you crazy mofo's again!
DT was a secondary consideration. If DT were there (or some of them) it
would have just been a major bonus. Pat said it best. It's about the
    fans... Not about the band.

Drum solos: I love 'em! And I'm not even a drummer. I do have a basic
understanding of drumming though. And that understanding helps me
appreciate drum solos. And if you're a musician, IMHO, you're missing out
if you ignore and instrument because you don't play it. Portnoy, Peart,
Zonder, etc. inspire my GUITAR playing in some wierd, roundabout sorta way!
I'm somewhat bewildered however in the lack of interest in drum solos... A
lot of people do only listen to music for "a cool beat," regardless of the
    melodic, harmonic or lyrical content.

    BAFU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 'nuff said.

One last thing that is totally unrelated to anything discussed here, but a
lot of people would probably be happy to hear about it.. And I'm posting for
all to see, so everyone will know, and I'll hesitate even moreso when I get
an urge to spark a Marlboro Light:

    I've been a non-smoker since late-Friday/early-Saturday! Yes, I kicked that
nasty habit, but I haven't exactly quit nicotine. The patch is working out
well and I can't wait til I'm free of that. I'm still working on the mental
aspect though, but I'm hanging in there. There's a warning label on the box
that says you may have wierd dreams if you wear the patch overnight. You
bet I'm wearing it when I sleep! ;) But anyways, do any other Jammers wanna
    join me and quit too?

I just HAD to jump on this. In all honesty, as huge a Skid Row
fan as I am, Subhuman Race was...pretty good. Very few bands put out a
flawless album (meaning one in which EVERY song is equally incredible)
but Skid Row did with "Slave To The Grind." So I guess maybe my
expectations were too high for them to follow up. Subhuman Race has alot
of great songs on it: "My Enemy," "Firesign," "Eileen," "Into Another,"
"Face Against My Soul," "Breakin' Down," "Iron Will," and the title track
are all incredible songs. The rest are okay. But upon listening to
"Slave" recently, even the great "Subhuman" songs, with the exception of
a couple, don't match up, making me think that perhaps those songs sound
great in comparison to some of the other stuff on that album. I think
alot of it has to do with Bob Rock producing it, instead of Michael
Wagner (who also produced one of the other flawless albums, IMHO,
Warrant's "Dog Eat Dog." If you haven't heard it, put those flames out).
This album is by no stretch of the imagination grunge, but some of the
melody found on "Slave" is missing, as are many of the guitar solos. But
there is a lot of aggression here. And Rob's drumming has increased 100%
from "Slave," which was a 100% increase from their self-titled debut.
Skid Row definitely have another truly great album in them and I hope
that they find it next time. Even if they don't, I'd be content with
Subhuman Race II, but I hope I don't have to be.

    Hello all...

Been lurking a while, and I've got some things...

    1) Along the lines of the Dream Theater Imaging Studio bit...I saw this
sign here in town just the other day, caught my eye...

    "Pantera Cellular"

    2) For those of you who like NIN...I have got to seriously reccomend
listening to his material on a Prologic Surround Sound system! WOW!!!
There is stuff coming out of every speaker, and some weird shit, too

    WOW!!

    3) And on the 11th day, God created the ytsejam, and had Bafu rule, and
    it was good!

    4) I've heard stories like this, but it never happened to me...until this
    weekend...

I was in a movie theater, watching "2 Days in the Valley", and I happened
to be wearing my Ytsejam shirt. After the film was over, the guy a
couple of seats in front turned around and asked me if I was on the
mailing list! We got to talking about DT and them playing shows in
    Phoenix.

Anyway, it was like instant friends!!!

I swear, you could be in the most ass-crack, no-where-ville place on the
planet...run into some guy with a DT shirt on, and BANG...you're like buds!

    5) I picked up a couple of CDs this weekend. One, I got the new TOOL :
AENIMA album. This is great...just raw power.

The other one I got on a dare because I saw a lot about him...thats
    YANNI.

This one all started last year. Before this, I'd make fun of Yanni, ya
know, because it was like "neew age". Anyway, I was listening to "Eve"
when my roommate walked in and asked about it. "What is this, Yanni?" he
asked. That instantly piqued my interest.

Well with all the talk about him on the 'jam recently, I picked up "Live
    At the Acropolis"

Oh boy, this guy's instrumentation is just phenomenal. I love it on the
fisrt listen. Its just amazingly well done, clear and clean, and has
    great and original rythms.

I know this music isn't for everyone, but I'd certainly recommend it to
those out there that like stuff like "Eve" and Movie soundtracks.
    Altogeter it kicks ass.

Any recommendations for other cool Yanni stuff that isn't on the Live CD?

Well, I've taken up a whole bit o' bandwidth.

    L8r

    }:P

PS - The world is full of stupid people...I had it proven to me beyond
    doubt this weekend at U-fest!!!

This exact performance is available on CD - it's called "Hands With A
Hammer" (You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Volume 3). Most of the other
live footage from Baby Snakes either turns up on the Baby Snakes album or
"You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Volume 6". If you don't like Zappa,
that's ok. Me, personally, I never knew him - but somehow I still am
saddened by the fact that he died at 52 and will never write or play
another note, or ever embarass another politician, or ever chew out
    another televangelist onstage. Shucks....

Someone better have a stinkin' camcorder at the con - I wanna see you

    Hey all, it's M-Bone here...

For those of us who are YtseCon-Impaired, for financial or other reasons,
would some kind Con-goer take the time to videotape this year's YtseCon III?

I know this is a lot to ask... I talked with someone on IRC a while back,
and he volunteered... but I don't remember who it was. If someone could
carry along a VHS camcorder, grab up all the cool moments (or otherwise)
and dupe it for the rest of us, I know a lot of people would be
    grateful. Myself included.

Please reply to the JAM if you can take on this responsibility. I think
we at least owe it to those who can't make it to the Con. Something more
than still pictures on a website would be much appreciated.

Hell... even 6 hours of people milling aimlessly around would be fun.
Interviews and greetings to all non-Con-goers would be a nice bonus. :)
I'd be willing to pay $$$ for a good videotape.

Hopefully I'll be able to make it to the Con next year, if it exists.
    See y'all and thanks much!

Some of the solos I remember being impressed by include those from Billy Cobham, Terry Bozzio, Carl Palmer and especially Barriemore (sp?) Barlow. They're not only great technicians, but they make the rhythm have more melody to it, if that makes any sense. I've only seen a Mike solo on the LiT video, so I'll reserve judgement till the '97 tour :)

OK. It's *my* turn to vent. The G3 tour is coming through Boston and I have a friend whose willing to drive. But God damn it!!! Only getting $100 from home to cover expenses in this ohmygodit'ssowonderful school and having to pay for organ lessons for theory class out of that, I doubt I'll be able to make the $35 needed. FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK MMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEE. On a lighter note, I think drum solos rock. I'm a passionate guitarist myself, but I love any kind of solow with tallent backing it up. Later. Be well and take care. M B AKA S D

Well, From what I caught of the guys on rockline, I heard a performance from Eric Johnson and his band doing SRV live from the studio in California. It sounded pretty good. Anyhoo, the highlight I think of the show was when Stu Hamm called up and gave the guys shit! It was so funny! He said something like: "Hey guys, I think you guys rule! It would be so cool to play with you..." and then finally: "come on guys, get back to San Fransisco so we can get on with rehearsles!!" I was rolling!
