Well I haven't had much to say latley because there haven't really been
any threads I'd like to add to, and I don't start threads anymore
because every time I do I get bitched at for it. So I'm just saying hi
to everyone who's missed me. I can finally be found in irc! Anyhoo, Dave
Matthews KICKED ASS at MSG on friday. They were so excellent.
Highlights: John Popper harp solo on What Would You Say, 15 minute plus
performance of Jimi Thing, THEY OPENED WITH #41! Low spot: I was sick as
a dog and felt like I was gonna pass out. good thing those bright lights
flashed on the crowd during Warehouse or I would've been out cold!

I think those who are calling the Skids' latest "grunge" and "not very
good" are high as all hell! Granted it isn't as "glam" as their debut
(which really wasn't glam in the Poison sense, but maybe in the Tesla
sense -- more jeans and leather jackets than hot pink guitars, etc.),
but SR was just a much more raw album. I know Bas doesn't croon on it
as much, but songs like "Face Against My Soul" and "Eileen" are great.
I love this disc and play it quite a bit, but it ain't grunge in my
         book.

New disc taking up space -- Fire Garden. AND I GOT MY G3 TIX FOR
         CHICAGO!!!!!

Yes, all. The con is in jeopardy. If you were looking forward to meeting me
at the con, (yeah sure you were), this may ruin your plan. My ride bailed out
on me. I know he has his reasons, but if I don't get a ride to the con, I
can't go. So, all you east coasters in the PA/NJ/NY area, email me at
s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu. Put ytsecon ride in the subject so I don't
skip over it. If I don't hear from anybody by Thursday night, I won't be able
to go. So, here's your chance. Let's see how cool you guys are.

Hey Jammers...this was weird and I have to share. I was at work yesterday
and me and my boss were talking about this co-worker of mine who just
happens to like Dream Theater. I told my boss, Dan, that anybody who has
even heard of Dream Theater is a friend of mine for life. Dan says, "You
mean the BAND Dream Theater?" I said yes and he said "I went to school
with their drummer." Just as I started to get excited he told me that
this guy went to Columbia College, graduated in 1993, and was 'newly
hired' as Dream Theater's drummer at about the time of his graduation.
Did I miss something? Was Dream Theater pondering a drummer change, are
there more than one 'Dream Theater', or is someone just telling some damn
    lies?

I realize this sounds stupid, but my friend (another jammer) and I have

Sorry, I thought Subhuman Race was a great cd. There are some great tunes, the bass was especially outstanding. It's nice to see that band trying new things. I give it the same rating as the previous cd's before it "Fucking great"

Ytsejammers- Hello and howdy. I am writing for one reason and one reason alone.

    **Help new progressive bands**

This is how I'd like you all to help me out. I just attended a meeting here at the University of Wisconsin - Madison campus. The meeting was WUD - Wisconsin Union Directorate and MUME - I don't know what this stands for - probably Memorial Union Music and Entertainment or something. ANYWAY....what WUD and MUME do (at least this comittee) is book local, not so local, and national acts, both known and unknown, to play at our Memorial Union (just like any college student union). This is done by 1) receiving promotional material from bands (usually through the record label, the band's agent, or some unknown universal force), 2) checking out the music and the band 3) proposing a date and a payment, then 4) maybe booking the band. What I need from you progressive music freaks is this: Bands that you know of that are fairly "underground" (meaning up and coming, with or without a record label), bands that are not huge yet (obviously Dream Theater does not fit into this catagory), bands that want exposure in the upper mid-west (namely Madison, Wisconsin), and Progressive bands...... If you know of a band that would like to get exposure, bands that are capable of playing a few hours, bands that are professional, bands that are progressive or relatively "un-normal", or bands that are your friends who want to tour and can, E-MAIL ME WITH THE band name, their record label, proper info to get intouch with the band to procure a promo tape and other promo material (pics, bio's, general info). Even if you have a CD that is fairly unknown (an example I can think of is Auditory Imagery. They are really talented, relatively unknown, and appear to want to be part of the music scene) let me know about it, and send me all the appropriate info. Sure, not many of you live in or around Madison, but you'd be doing a big favor for Me, for the Progressive Rock Movement, and for our campus.

Any questions or comments, e-mail rtgood@students.wisc.edu

Thanks in advance for your help. I believe that we must start at this level (college, read: College Radio) in order to get our music recognized and possibly appreciated by the general public. _____________________________________________________ "The strength of the moment lies with you" --Yes _____________________________________________________

One of my all time favorite DRUM solos is from a movie by FRANK ZAPPA: Babysnakes. Terry Bozzio (sp??) He was young then and SSOOOOO MUCH energy and feeling.

It's worth checking out the video. You might have to call around, but you should find it.

It is a VERY TRIPPY movie. More tripped out than "The Wall".

    > bah. i've only seen a few good drum solos before. i think that > lars ulrich (metallica) is a much better drum solist than MP is ... lars > just gets me going, while MP reminds me of almost exactly of neil peart,

Bah, bah! Obviously this guys is stoned. The only thing lars can do in a drum solo is double bass the hell out of the damn thing. I don't see where Lars can outplay Neil's drum solo on Exit Stage Left's YYZ, or Mike Portnoy's solo on Ytsejam (LiT). I personally find drum solos very boring, but I can liten to these over and over again. Maybe it's because these guys play their drums like a musical instrument and not just as a percussion tool. Besides, how can Lars rip over Mike with his cheap 5-piece, 3 cymbal kit I last saw him on? (No flames about dissing Lars, please, I like Metallica alot, but I've gotta defend Mike and Neil).

Anyway, Too bad I won't be able to make it to the Con this year. Looks like I got my account back too late, and didn't have time to "Take the Time" off. Anyway, as long as there's a con next year, I plan to go for sure. I'll drag people along if I have to....

    > I just bought THRaKaTTaK. It's awesome. I can scare the neighbors >with this one. I also got the new Jonas Hellborg cd, "Temporal Analogues of >Paradise". It's with Shawn Lane and Apt. Q-258. This thing kicks some >serious aRSE.

I allso bought THRaKaTTaK... and I hate it, persoannly. I think it's sort of... too vague. It just amkes me think of a bunch of pretentious old men making string noises with their instruments and saying "This is art." I found the first two tracks listenable (there's some cool percussion) but the rest was generally bland, vague... boring musically and mentally.

HOWEVER, I TOTALLY recommend BOTH of the Jonas Hellborg/Shawn Lane projects (I know of two. There may be more). This is where it's at, guys. Shawn Lane can make Petrucci look slow, but he has GREAT taste in his newly improved improvising. Lane is a better keyboardist than MacAlpine (that's saying a lot) and he's right there with all the greats on guitar. A lot of people pigeonhole him as a shredder because his instructional videos (suck) only feature licks that MUST be played fast to sound good. Hellborg is a great bassist, with some sick speed on the fingering chops. I will note that it's hard to hear the bass chops at some times on the cds. Now, as for drums, both Abstract Logic (their first album, featuring Kofi Baker on drums) and the new one have AWESOME drums. I don't know of many drummers that can really compete with APT. Q-258(also known as Jeff Sipe). This guy is REALLY sick. He's doing these weird polyrhythms and ghost sticks all over the place and keeping immaculate time and groove.

Both albums are total improvs. These are not things you can go buy in the store and listen to while driving home and totally grasp. I didn't really like Abstract Logic until I had a while to leave it on repeat and get the melodies stuck in my head. There's a lot of change, and complexity... but there's also an element of simplicity to the music. It's really hard to explain, but if you like improvs, you will dig these cds. If you are looking for prog, this is not it (though there's great musicianship).

This brings me to my last thing... I just bought two new albums... both by Aquarium Rescue Unit, and MAN do thses guys have it together. I would call it Bela Fleck meets Kings X, with a bluesy edge. The guitarist is the genetic combination of Frank Gambale, Blues Saraceno, and Steve Morse. The bass is going to HURT you on this album. I know only ONE person who can actually play this (know personally. I know Bill Dickens and Victor Wooten do some of thses techniques) slapping stuff, and he injured himself quite a few times while mastering it. He also tends to do a lot of scatting to his bass lines and solos... which gets weird (though cool) when he hits the 16th note triplets. The drums are Jeff Sipe (Apt. Q-258) so ... nuff said. Take care jammaz.

"Ignores" them? How can you ignore a combination like Vai and Satriani... on stage at the same time...with such wild...outrageous...psychedelic... GUITAR-BODY GRAPHICS??? :)

Not to mention Joe's shiny head. :) :)

Speaking of G3, would everyone going to the Seattle show please raise their hand?

---- > From: "LRW" <sir@micron.net> > Subject: latm > > who is that that yells right before Bombay Vindaloo?

A perpetually inebriated fellow from "The Simpsons" who goes by the name of Barney.

Then Ralph Macchio wins the award for "best guitar mimicry." When he's playing the bit from Caprice #5 on his acoustic (in his room), his fingers really appear to be covering the correct frets. In fact, a lot of his playing during the movie appears almost dead-on. Maybe they had him watch a lot of videos of guitarists...or maybe they locked him in a padded room with Vai for a few hours...

    Now this.

Brian Cox: Nevermind. Consider the six-month-old blank cassettes a gift.

Tim Lodge: Please e-mail me regarding the Summer Guitar workshop.

    R. Chris Hailey: Just checked out the t-shirt design. One word: Keeewl. :)
