    Hey fellow 'jammers,

I apologize for the non-DT content of this post but I think most
of you would be interested in this. My guitar instructor has
organized a benefit concert for Jason Becker... I'm sure most of you
know who he is already. This show is going to take place in Chicago
on Nov. 17 and is going to be an INCREDIBLE collection of guitarists
putting on a hell of a show for a good cause. I am doing the
advertisements and helping out in anyway I can and I want to let you
guys know before I start posting the word elsewhere... by the way,
our very own John Petrucci was going to play but it turns out the
date is the same as the twins first birthday... oh well :-) But
anyway, the following is going to be posted in various newsgroups but
you guys are the first to know about it.... Any questions you can
email me and I will help you out anyway I can...

Chopin had etudes, Shakespeare had sonnets, Paganini had caprices, Big
Bird had hallucinatory friends... I guess everyone has their forte.

As for me, I wrote on staff paper for the first time in my life this
afternoon. Boy is this stuff more convenient than drawing five parallel
    lines on a blank sheet.

    > Now, if only he can pull it off live...

Of course he can't. No one can play Vai stuff. Not even Brian Wherry can
play Vai stuff. (okay, so I don't KNOW that, it's one of those
rollercoaster compliments that goes all over the place)

As for whether or not he can last the entirety of the show, Vai practices
his guitartistry for nine+ hours a day. I don't think his hands are even
going to notice a two-hour performance. What disturbs me is the fact that
there won't be enough time for him to play everything from every album
    he's ever done.

Good thing he had that second child. "There's A Julian In The House" would
have sounded kind of awkward. :)

    > This sure cheers me up after the _Joe Satriani_/_Venus Isle_ debacles
    > (flame, if you desire). I don't know why some were dissin' the second
    > "side". I think the vocal tracks are way cool, too.

Yep. Hasn't changed much since "Rescue Me Or Bury Me." Now, when he can
sing along with all his lead guitar tracks, THEN color me impressed.

Wait a minute..."ytsejam"...is this some kind of Dream Theater list or
    something?

Hmmm...I've heard the CD just once (i am just getting home from getting
it) but I guess it's the first one. Intuition, at the end, when there's
almost 3 minutes left. I'll give it another listen again :)
Awesome stuff, the guitar's pretty heavy, which I love from Lie and The

Hey guys, Sorry about the Rush thing. I was just having a bad day, and to find out they weren't coming was really a bum trip. Alot of good bands steer away from this area because it is mostly Country-western territory (bleah) and bands like Slayer fuck it all up for everyone. There were several stabbings at the SLC Slayer show and Salt Lake is already so conservative they wouldn't let AC/DC play for years.

BTW, the Caddilac thing is from Denis Leary's No cure for Cancer speel. If you haven't heard it, can handle vulgarity, and are very cynical about the world, get it, you'll love it!

Next, has anyone heard about Saigon Kick recently? I was thinking that this would be a great band for KevMo to hook up in. You can only make a good thing better. DT and SK toured together berfore and I thought that they should be pretty good friends by now (Kev and Jason). Maybe it could help pick SK back up off of their feet.

    > I know I'm a little late, but this CD rocks! The instrumental stuff is as > good as he's ever done, and this boy can sing! The weeny track is cheesy, > though. So's the artwork. i guess you can't have your vai and eat him > too:)

I thought the weenie track was cheezy, too, but it was meant to be cheezy. That's why I like it. I'm also not too fond of the artwork. But you can pick tour bands, just not their styles, I guess...

    >i just read the faq file and i was wondering why james walked off of >the stage and mike had to sing the end of surrounded. could anyone >explain this to me?

The way I heard it was that someone yelled something derrogatory at James in the quiet part and James got pissed. At least he didn't jump the stage and beat the fuck out of the guy, though I would have liked to have seen that! Anyway, now you know. Don't fuck with KJ! At least he knows how to handle stress. ;-)

This has been discussed on here (Rush influences on Dream Theater songs). Does anyone else besides me think that the bridge of "6:00" sounds a little bit like the AWESOME 7/8 riff at the beginning of "Hyperspace" in "Natural Science"? Also, does anyone else have ticket information for Rush in Boston? Does anyone besides me care that I'll be at the Ytsecon? (Will that ruin it for everyone?)

I'm not sure what to feel about the whole Gary Cherone/VH thing, if it is true. On the one hand, Gary's got a GREAT voice and will add a whole new dimension to the band both vocally and lyrically. But on the other hand, I LOVE Extreme (although their last album blew). They were one of the few bands out there that had their own sound. And I find it hard to believe that the Gary/Eddie chemistry is as potent as the Nuno/Gary chemistry was/is. I wonder what's going to happen to the songs that Extreme had written for their next album. Maybe they'll turn up in some greatest hits collection. Extreme: Rest In Peace.

Richie P.S. If it's true that David recorded the tracks with the impression that the band was reforming, then it pisses me off that VH would trick him like that.

    ------------------------------

My brother heard it on WTUE (our rock station) that it is 100% for certain that Extreme is no more...but that it is 80% certain that Gary is in VH. I hope he gets the gig, or that Extreme gets back together. Gary could make me like VH... :)

    >From: Dark Helmet <skooc@earthlink.net> >Subject: Extreme de-funked (fwd)

I love that subject line. Very Extreme in nature. "Get the Funk Out" "Never Been Funked" yadda yadda...

    >>Last night (Wednesday) at almost midnight, WNEW in NYC read a >>fax they had just received that Extreme had broken up. I >>guess we all know what comes next.

Let's pray that Gary gets the gig. It will be great for him, and IMHO, GREAT for VH. I'm not a VH fan, but it's not too late to start. Gary is one of my favorite vocalists of all-time. He's got emotion, and tons of it. The only emotive person that comes close is Doug Pinnick, in my books.

    >So this coupled with what we knew confirmed before...that >Gary has been writing with Eddie at 5150 studios and that >he had been rehearsing some of the old stuff...it looks >like Gary Cherone will become the 3rd lead singer of VH

At least without Extreme, we'll still have Nuno and Gary still doing stuff. (And they're the main ones in the band anyhow, IMO). Nuno's album is due out around the same time that DT's one is. Of course, it has been pushed back for the past year and a half... :(

    >Extreme it looks like is finished. But since I really only care about >Gary and Nuno then at least I will be able to see them doing stuff...

"The show must go on..." Whether together or doing different things. I kinda figured it'd happen soon. I mean, Nuno's in Aussie-land, and Gary's been doing JCS, and Mike's been doing stuff with Vai. Hopefully they can get back together (sometime), and at least put out some more good tunage (or at least form a studio band).

Yup. This applies even if the trademarks are a blatant attempt to rip off the other's notoriety; i.e. my car. A Chevy Beretta, named after the handgun. The hadgun's manufacturer took Chevy to court over it, but the car is still called a Beretta, because no one would confuse a car with a pistol.

    >how about "the silent man"... and just have myung sit in front of the >camera :) LOL!!! Yeah, that could work. Or maybe so both TSM into The Mirror, and then just have myung sit in front of a mirror in front of the camera, maybe wearing a space dye vest. And about that idea for a video for The Mirro, yeah, the bits parts would work. I mean, I could see the guy shoving MP to the side as he runs down the street (it'd almost be like that white trash guy (Skank?) from The Crow that beat up on Henry Rollins' cameo character - I bet MP can kick some ass (I'm not talking about his drumming, either), and some other stuff I can't really think of off hand. Actually a cool sounding idea. And I agree, the band members shouldn't be in it as the band doing a performance of the song. That's what I like about the video for "Can I Play with Madness," and some others like that. Performance videos, though maybe cheaper and easier to make, tend to be generic and boring after a while (even if the song is good. I mean, if I wanted to listen to the song, I'd just put the CD in). A well-done video can also add some insight as to the meaning of the song.

    Hello 'jamanoids!

Welcome to the 1900's. I hope the dark ages of the jam are behind us now. Even if there were another "mindcrimer" just around the corner...

I sure hope the design company Dream Theater are DT fans, because they just might be able to snatch our fave band's name if they so wished. There was an incident in Finland about a year ago, when a barbershop called Taikapeili (that's Magic Mirror in English) sued a very popular pop duet of the same name and the duet was forced to change their name. There was some talks about how the companies were on totally different trades but the barbershop owner insisted that the duet's public image had actually damaged her business. I could imagine that the law is pretty much the same in the U.S., so let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that the design company isn't a bunch of rock'n'roll haters.

I was on a Music Expo here in Helsinki last weekend and I attended Timo Tolkki's (Stratovarius) and Roope Latvala's (Waltari) guitar clinic. Tolkki played a new Stratovarius song along to a DAT recorder, and my impression was that Strato is going to get even better on the next album. Afterwards Tolkki answered some audience questions and despite all the trendy Yngwie-bashing he actually had the guts to say that he still regards YJM one of the best guitarists ever, even though YJM seems to have eaten half of his potatoes through the nose. To everyone who hasn't got "Episode", get it now. Everyone who's ever liked Helloween, Angra, Gamma Ray, Chroming Rose or such is 100 proof to love this album! Roope Latvala played a song off Waltari's "Yeah! Yeah! Die! Die!" and he seems to be a pretty hilarious guy.

No, Timo Tolkki or Timo Kotipelto (Stratovarius vocalist, whom I also met) did not pay me for this shameless Stratovarius plug.

DTC:There also was a huge video screen on the Expo. John P:s instructional video was playing on it. With no sound. Now ain't that something.

I'm getting ready to crash after my 21st birthday party and I thought I'd post some random thoughts. The new Tool is excellent but extremely dense. Be My Druidess from October Rust has to have one of the best bass intros I have ever heard! If anyone out there is looking for a good prog band with a female vocalist, let me know. This band, Leger De Main, is amazing! I also suggest that anyone who likes Rush and Enchant, check out Tiles. They are great and Chris Herin, the guitarist, is way cool. I guess that's all for now. I'm going to go blow the heads off a few zombies in Resident Evil before I catch some Z's. Just one reminder, never let drunk friends mix drinks from random bottles of liquor. Blech! :P
