Hello Jammers,
I guess we are back to the five jams a day volume. I can't wait til the
new album comes out in the spring, we will be up to about twelve jams a
day then. I will probably have to resort to shooting myself in the head
to escape. <grin> Since I only have a few months to live I'll post
another progressive concert review, I guess a couple of you guys and
girls like these so I'll keep posting until someone says that there are
too many non-G3 or Rush reviews on the jam. BTW I am seeing Rush on
November 7th at the US Air Arena, and I'm listening to Operation:
Mindcrime (kids feel free to put this CD on at home while reading this
post <grin>)
Gong/Boud Deun - October 19th - Baltimore Museum of Art
At first I thought to myself, "there is a concert hall at the Baltimore
Museum of Art? Or is this a typo?" But surprisingly enough I arrived at
8:15PM and heard the first notes of Boud Deun's set (I have seen this
band 7 times, so I definitely know their heavy fusion when I hear it) so
I knew I was in the right place. The concert hall held about 300 people
and it is probably used mostly for speeches, it had a slight slope and
the projection equipment was located in the center aisle that split the
upper area from the lower. Boud Deun had the typical 45 minutes that
opening acts are allotted and they performed well. For those who aren't
familiar with this band who first made a name for themselves at Progscape
96 with a performance of sheer technical speed and jamming, and their
mixing of heavier chords from all genres of music into their fusion.
They are Greg (violin), Matt (bass), Shawn (guitar), and Rocky (drums).
All of the musicians are experts at their instruments, Matt is one of the
most incredible bass players that I have ever seen perform, he ranks up
with Tony Levin (King Crimson) as a favorite, though Matt's style is a
bit more experimental as his fingers flow across the bass. Shawn also
plays fantastic runs on the guitar and some of the most non-standard
chord runs. Think John McLaughlin, but a lot younger. This band cannot
be more better summed up than "Mahavishnu Orchestra on steroids". It
should be a banner under their name, until the day when they actually
become more popular than Mahavishnu Orchestra. (a guy can hope) They
performed several songs off the new album which will be out on Cunniaform
records in early 1997. Saints, Spiders, Jupiter (one of those Matt on
the crazy bass songs, it has been around for a while, I once saw a 20
minute version of it at a concert at The New Ritz, or at least 20 minutes
of something that became this tune). They received screaming applause
from the crowd, probably not one of their tighter nights musically but
they are so much tighter than most other bands on their best nights,
people generally didn't notice. The bass amp started smoking on Matt
during one of the songs, at first I thought they were trying out a smoke
machine, then I smelled the aroma of smoking wire. The band finished
with Continued, perhaps a reminder that they will be back.
Gong came on after a short intermission to present their "Shapeshifter"
tour show. Steffi Sharpstrings (guitar, synths) opened on the synth and
the respective band members came out one by one. Didier (sp?) (flute,
wood flute, soprano sax, alto sax) arrived, Pip Pyle (drums) seated
behind the set with the trangle and eyeball painted on the kick, Gilli
came to the mic and began her ethereal vocals, Jeff Martin wandered out
with his bass (hopefully not attached to Matt's exploding amp), finally
ringleader Daevid Allen (guitar, vocals) appeared in his wizard costume,
glittering cape and funky glasses. The band began the set with Dynamite
an spent the two sets addressing songs from throughout the Trilogy albums
(Flyint Teapot, Angel's Egg, You) and a few tracks from the Shapeshifter
album which were also pretty cool. The most racious applause came after
a smoking rendition of Master Builder (my favorite song by Gong
incidently) where many people rose to their feet cheering. Didier
performed his routine using French Doubletalk again to our amusement in
which he end the vocal experiment with the name of the city they are
playing. Didier is an incredible instrumentalist and it is worth the
price of the ticket just to see him play. Jeff is a solid bass player
and the rhythm section that is produced is incredible. (Ozric Tentacles
fans, pick up some Gong, these guys inspired your band) Gilli sang "I'm
Your Pussy" which came across better than at the show at the 8 X 10 back
in the spring. Overall a great concert, they added some projections and
psychedelic effects during the second set.
I don't believe that the speech given during the intermission by the
stoned guy was intended, "halucination" was every third word of the
speech. <grin>
(Sorry for the length of this)

Mike

This is the kind of thing I LOVE about metal and glam. Andy was in
Danger Danger, I believe--a glam band that wrote songs such as
"Slipped Her the Big One" (I do own a disc--free--of theirs that I do
stillplay). But so many of these guys in the genre could REALLY play!
I don't if I can say that about many bands today since the emphasis
(IMO) is on lyrics and rythm guitar vs. solos and chops.
Andy used to pop into the local blues bars here in Chicago and sit in
on jams. The guy can really play yet many would never even give him
any repsect because of the "stigmata." Glad to see he's got stuff
going on. I'll be looking for that disc!
I also inquired why the downtown Guitar Center here never has big
clinics goin on. I was told they do them, but for the most part,
there isn't enough room in the store to have some of the bigger names.
Those guys head to the Burbank store. CRAP!

The Galactic Cowboys Chat on AOL went pretty cool. I was on a
friend's account, and he kept causing trouble...sigh. The guys in GC
were all there. I guess they were all at Ty Tabor's house (guitarist
of King's X). They mentioned their touring with DT. They said that
it was an excellent time, and they'd do it again if the opportunity
arose (paraphrase). That'd be a dream tour...my two fav bands in one
evening!! :) Maybe they'll do it again...let's hope.
I'm going to see Rush tonight!! Can't wait!! I get off work at 8pm,
and it starts at 8pm, so I've got my DT Awake shirt underneath my
shirt and tie... :) If anybody else is going to the Dayton Rush show
at Nutter Center, look for me. I'll be in black jeans and a DT Awake
shirt...not that you'll be able to spot me in the crowd anyway, but I
just thought I'd mention it.

Ok - time for a post
It's been a while, but I must add my 2 cents on why changing time
signatures add so much to music, IMHO.
I am a percussionist by training - took lessons during high school and
made all state orchestra. So, I began formal training through
rudimentary snare drum and percussion. Then I picked up on drum set, esp
in high school.
Anyhow, I have played and listened to various orchestral pieces, as well
as the DT/RUSH type time signature changes. Musics can become too
predictable at times, esp. with modern "pop" music. SO, certain parts of
songs deserve a mood change, or a change of pace/tempo/time. It is
according to one's acquired taste, though. Some composers are satisfied
with experimenting in 4/4 time solely. Others expand into 3/4, 6/8, 7/8,
9/8, 15/8, 13/16, etc. In high school, our band played a march, in which
nested in 4/4 measures were 2 7/8 measures. I thought that was very cool
for a marching band type piece. Also, in west side story, Some odd times
are introduced, too. I've also seen in other classical pieces, a melody
played in 2, with another "melody" playing 3 against 2. Also, Dave Weckl
plays some odd times in his jazz CDs, but not as much anymore. I played
to a latin-jazz piece on Weckl's Master Plan CD called "Island Magic".
It has sections in 7/8 time, including a drum solo in 7/8 time. Just
imagine improvising a solo, while trying to keep track of the time! It's
pretty fun stuff!!!

I disagree with this.
This is one of the primary reasons I remain subscribed to this list. If
there is a high-quantity, positive buzz (repeat postings) about any artist,
I am willing to at least seek out sound samples.
However, the "rokz nadz" and its other flavors get kind of boring. I'd
rather see well-written reviews and short praise rather than the hip
little sound bites that say nothing other than "I like it."
I have read postings that prove there are still people in the world that
may like a progressive rock/metal artist without knowing that they like
progressive rock/metal. So, as far as I am concerned, no artist should be
off-limits(including non-prog rock/metal); however, some types of discussions
about artists should be and (officially, anyway) are banned.

If I may offer a reminder/suggestion. . . There's a mailing list out there
SPECIFICALLY for the discussion of progressive music. Therefore: if you want
to talk about "Band X", it's perfectly welcome and "legal" there. Please
check it out at www.prognosis.com and seriously consider subscribing. After
all, 6 'jams with about 2% DTC each means that we could cut it down to 1-2

Hola fellow Jammanoids,
I have an addition to my last posting, in which I proceeded to
shamelessly waste bandwidth by complaining and whining about things which
are bugging me about the current state of the Jam.
There is this thing called the Dream Theater IRC Server. For
those of you familiar with IRC, just set your server to irc.dreamt.org at
port 2112. Then join channel #ytsejam. If you want to carry on long
conversations about things having absolutely nothing to do with DT with
people of like interests, this is the place to do it. Everyone on there
is usually pretty friendly, willing to listen to your personal problems,
willing to point you in the direction of cool Internet web-sites or
ftp-sites, etc. If you want to discuss something you saw in a Jam that's
not appropriate for the whole list, but also not necessarily a very good
thing to take to private e-mail with one or two individuals, the IRC
server is the perfect place for it.
irc.dreamt.org 2112
/join #ytsejam
----End Shameless Plug for the IRC Server... we now return you to your
regularly scheduled program of racism, time signatures, and Rush/G3
reviews.

What I know about the above (not that much, really). The "Innovators" disc
is considered something of a classic for a small group of people. It's the
big disc from Treble V records -- sort of the analogue of "Breakfast In The
Fields" at Windham Hill. Anyhow, there are several guest musicians on the
CD, the most frightening of whom is probably Dave Weckl. Grant Geissman's
on there, too, as I recall. It's a jazz cult classic, basically. Bestor's
got a Christmas CD, too....don't think it's on Treble V, though. A lot of
times, though, both Bestor and Cardon are promoted on a religious basis --
you may fine there music in the Spiritual, rather than Jazz,
section...they're both fairly high-profile members of the Mormon Church. If
you're looking for anything from either of them, though, "Innovators" is
clearly the place to start.

The one thing I came out of Mojo's message was "I didn't realize fellatio
was so prevalent on here." I come to the table with a really liberal
interpretation of what's acceptable in most any forum...I've gotta remember
to stick a fork in it when I get to sounding like Dennis Miller. But if
you're actually interested in what's going on in this community and
improving it, you've gotta accept and assess criticism. The whole oral sex
thing was a little cryptic to me...I don't really think it's so bad here.
In principle, the premise is that people here oughta be fairly interested in
the band. I mean, I like "Learning to Live" more than "Only A Matter Of
Time" more than "Scarred" more than "Pull Me Under" more than "Afterlife."
And "Afterlife" is a really strong tune.
Anyhow, I'm a relative newcomer and don't have the broad perspective of the
history here, but, on the other hand, I think things are functioning pretty
well here...we've really put together some interesting and relevant
discussions of all kinds of music around here, including higher profile
artists like Yes, Rush, and Vai....and also all of the Magna Carta titles
that keep popping up, including our esteemed Marcel's band.
Ah well....I didn't get enough sleep last night. I'm feeling less and less
coherent.
