It's true!
Strolling peacefully around my favourite CD store back home
in Turku, Finland, I was about to buy either Superior's disc
or the latest from "Nightingale", which is a solo prog effort
buy a Swedish metal guru called Dan Swano (he has/has had
a death metal band called Edge of Sanity and a doom band called
Pan-Thy-Monium.. If you see either of Nightingale's two albums,
you should consider getting them. Nice stuff.)
..anyways, while listening to Superior I glanced through the
store's rarities shelf, saw Kick into a Dream, didn't buy it
since it cost FIM 300 ($65), then saw WDATU, and just had to
get it even though it cost FIM 200 (like 45 bucks or so..).
I've only listened to it once so far, but it seems good.
I really like March of the Tyrant and the Showdown/Moon Bubbles
or whatever the final jam is.
BTW, what the hell is James doing on Fortune in Lies?
"a trifling eupHOUYYRiaaah!!"... I listened to it over
and over again for over fifteen times, it totally cracked
me up.
Anyways, that's it, I have to go back and listen to it some more
before I can really comment on it. The main thing is that now
I am the proud owner of WDATU #327 (or 321, I'm not sure)... Yay!

Message-ID: <9610241502.aa27@tppalv2.metsaserla.fi>
Hello 'jamanoids.
The following post has only Savatage content, so skip if not interested.
YtseCon Europe sounds good. I can't see it happening, though...
I've often wondered on what grounds do people call Jon Oliva/Savatage a
bad singer. Now I finally feel that I must voice my opinion. And all of
this, needless to say really but you can't be wary enough, is only my
IMHO. I'm no guardian of the absolute truth. And to spite some people,
I'll even say "Jon nokz radz" even though it sounds corny, but I'm going
to tell you why...
All pre-Zack era Savatage discs can create an atmosphere that's been
missing from every disc ever since Jon quit singing. Just take a listen
to the title track of "Hall of the Mountain King" and tell me Zack Stevens
is able to create an atmosphere even half as insane that Jon does. I guess
I'm trying to say that Zack, so much better technically as he is, can't
possibly convey the emotion of f.ex. "When the Crowds Are Gone" the
way Jon does. Jon practically weeps the words out. The difference
can best be seen on "Gutter Ballet" on the Live in Japan '94 CD, as the
two vocalists sing duet. Jon's voice isn't anywhere near it was on
the late eighties, but he still puts more of himself to every song he
sings than Zack ever could. Maybe it's just me, but I have the feeling
that Zack just sings them like, "Ok, now I've sung it. It went actually
pretty well. Next one please." He sounds absolutely hollow. None of
the desperate whining sounds, none of the utter madness, none of the
rough edges. Nothing. Just technical excellence. I do like one short
bit of Zack's singing though. It's near the ending of "He Carves His
Stone" on "Edge of Thorns", where Zack screams his head out. When I
heard that for the first time, it occurred to me that Sava just might
have found a worthy replacement for Jon. But it's been only that single
time. Now I hear everyone shouting "Just listen to DWD, the songs Jon sings
are the worst ones on the disc!" True. But Jon's supposed to sound like one
angry sonofabitch on those tracks. Does he sound like that? See? He conveys
the emotion, whereas rest of the songs are empty in the same way everything
on HoR and EoT is. I wouldn't want anyone to form their opinions of Jon
based on the few songs on DWD. Get the earlier Sava stuff, especially
"Hall..." and "Gutter Ballet" and "Streets". Listen to the feelings,
people! Music has always been not just about technicality, but feelings,
inspiration and maybe some perspiration. :) So, if you ask me, Jon Oliva is
one of the absolute greats in metal singing ever.
I'd be glad to hear other people's opinions of this...

Hello all. I just had a couple of quick questions. First, who on this
list other than Rick@Brown are going to be at the Rush show? I'll
definitely be wearing my Ytsejam shirt. (which should arrive soon!)
My second question is: Does anybody know when DT will do some shows in
the New England area?(Mass, NH, Me) I have seen all these posts about a
show in one of the Carolinas and in Pennsylvania. What are these shows
for? Are they to test out some new tunes? If anyone with any
information about these subjects, let me know.
My address is agls@christa.unh.edu

Whoa now, Bafhulio. I don't see him saying that there at all. Maybe you
misunderstood my lame ass joke about wanting to increase tension on the jam.
It's an absolute reality that tunes with vocals are more readily consumed
and understood than tunes where the box are used for melody alone, or where
there are no vocal tracks. He's not saying "I don't understand 'For the
Love of God'" but rather making a valid point that Pull me Under is going to
be a much moe approachable song to most people, regardless of how much we
all love FtLoG. And yes this was an example, and yes I am putting words in
his mouth, but I think it follows with his point.

>I wonder what the band memebers would have to say about this issue?
I think DT would be fine with that. Call it what you want. Some people
require lyrics to consider music a song... some do not. That's just a
categorization... doesn't mean he doesn't dig Erotomania....

Man, I'm in the process of rediscovering the most recent Dickinson
(sort of) project, Skunkworks. man, it's really got some good stuff
on it, but it is most definitely NOT Maiden by any stretch. BTW,
speaking of Maiden, if anyone has any bass tab for Maiden songs, let
me know. I have part of "...Ancient Mariner" (which I figured out
before I got the tab), and "Phantom of the Opera" (I think that's the
other one). Thanks.

There have been a lot of people who, from what I know, have been assuming
incorrectly the location of some of our list members. Specifically a
post in the last 'jam that refered to Bafu and Mike Bahr as 'East coast
jammers', and post before that that had similiar statements. Bafu is on
the *west* coast, I believe Washington. I don't know where he resides
while he's not in school, but for better than half the year he's on the
west side of our little island. As for Mike Bahr, he's in the southwest,
Arizona I believe, although I could be wrong. The thing about Mike Bahr
is he has the money and determination to go to the east coast for shows
and Cons whenever he damn well pleases, so I can see why someone might
think he would lived there.
Hey, Mike? Any chance you could make one of the December shows and
release the new DT CD before they do? ;)

Message-ID: <Pine.SGI.3.91.961024150633.10088B-100000@indy21.gclab.missouri.edu>
Well, this post has been a long time coming, but if I wait much longer
it's not even going to be worth posting. But I do want to give my
thoughts on YtseCon III and the people that made it happen.
I won't bore you with Irene and my entire trip to NY, so we'll keep this
confined to Saturday (and technically early Sunday morning), with just
one note that on Friday I got a call from Jeff Chew asking everyone to
meet in the lobby at 11:30 to start setting up.
Well, 11:30 came, and Irene and I headed downstairs to help out. We get
there, and there's a big group of scary looking people wearing Dream
Theater shirts standing in the hallway by the conference room. Not
knowing what most of the staff looked like, I assumed it was them. Well,
apparently no one from the staff was there yet (apart from myself). It's
funny, but these people just kind of congregated together when they saw
each other, and the group kept growing... It happens like that a lot,
actually, one of us seeing another DT shirt and striking up an instant
conversation, of course this time, there were a lot more of us. So I
waited with them and shot the shit until Jeff showed up with a few other
staff members. We all made our way into the conference room and started
getting things together.
After things were in order there, Irene and I headed back up to our room
to drag down the three bags of Ytsejam tshirts I had brought with me. As
we step off the elevator, there is someone else getting on. As we pass,
he looks at the shirts (we had on Ytsejam shirts) and apparently saw the
Majesty logo, then looked at the back of the shirts as we passed and
asked if we were here for the Con (an astonishingly stupid question, but
still... :). We stopped for a minute and turned around to talk to him.
He asked who we were, and I introduced myself, then Irene, and watched
half in amusement and half in realization as he got a very embarrassed
look on his face and crouched into the eleveator apparently to avoid
impending pummeling. No introduction was necessary on his part, I just
looked at him and said "You must be Mike." Mike "Syrinx" Ostrich, that
is, with whom I had just had a three day flame war on the jam with about
a rather rude comment he made about Irene and I. Well, sorry to
dissappoint everyone, but there was no fist fight or 'rumble in the bronx
(or in this case Queens)'. We actually got along suprisingly well.
So Mike headed downstairs and we grabbed the shirts and went back down
ourselves. We finished setting things up and opened the doors, and then
it was a nearly steady flow of people coming in and buying shirts for
about 15 minutes or so. By then, the crowd in the hall had migrated
inside the room and it was just a trickle of people in small groups
coming in every once in a while. Well, Mike Bahr showed up and the shit
hit the fan. Luckily I was able to grab him and get my hands on some CDs
before he was consumed by the crowd. After that, there was a large
circle of people surrounding him like hungry wolves to buy CDs. Mike's
only regret was not having brought enough CDs for everyone. I actually
had visions of him taking over at the mic and the room filling with the
sounds of "IgotalimitededitionbetatestofPreciousThingsrighthereforya,
onlythreeofthemarebeingmade... (deeeeeeeep breath)... I'mgonnastartthe
biddingat30dollars,doIhave30dollars?30dollars,thankyousir,doIhear35?35,
thankyouma'am.DoIhear--wait?What'sthat?50dollars!Ihaveabidof50dollars.
50dollarsgoingoncegoingtwice.... SOLD to the man in the Dream Theater
shirt, thank you very much sir." But Mike kept it small and private and
things worked out for him, so I hope he's happy. :)
The Con progressed pretty smoothly from that point on, we played music,
we mingled, we talked, we joked. Bahr sold CDs, I sold shirts, Jeff
tried and tried and tried to convince Derek to come to the Con or to get
JP or JLB to come along with him... We played CDs and talked about them,
etc...
For those curious, this is what I remember playing:
Dream Theater -- Awake
Dream Theater -- Precious Things (I think it was a Beta, could have been
an alpha, at any rate, it was the one that went to Chris
Oates for $50)
Superior -- Behind
Altura -- Mercy (thanks to Paul Cashman)
Trans Siberian Orchesta -- Christmas Eve and Other Stories (I have no
idea how this guy got a pre-release, but we listened to it)
I think that's about it, but if I forgot one, let me know.
Well, Rob Barker finally showed up (what was it, Rob? 2 hours late?), and
he and Mike Ostrich went on to do their acoustic set at roughly 3:15.
They played a few songs, but I can't say for sure what... I believe
Tears, Dust in the Wind, The Silent Man... and then attempts at a few
other DT songs that just should NOT be done on acoustic guitar. :) After
their set, Frank 'Mojoman' Benenati (Yes, the same one who just
unsubscribed in a blaze of glory) got up there and played some more stuff
with Rob. Highlights of the set? Mike Bahr's backing vox on TSM, John
Cahill's heckles from the back of the room (directed toward Rob, I
believe). By the way, Rob, what the hell picture *did* you take? :)
And of course the playing of both Rob and Mike and the joking and general
atmosphere in the room during the set.
After that, the Con began winding down some, people broke off into other
groups, talked, mingled, made plans for afterwards, etc. After the Con,
a large groups of us, mostly staff, but also some others, went to
Roosevelt Field for dinner, and then to Q-zar to be riddle with sniper
fire from Jeff Chew's gun.
Highlights after the Con:
* Just being able to hang out with everyone a bit longer and talk and BS
and things like that.
* Once again putting my life in Augie's hands on the highways of
beautiful New York.
* Mike Bahr having to buy a suitcoat just to get on his return flight home.
* The employee of Q-zar who repeatedly asked us why the hell we were all
wearing the same shirt.
* Almost getting kicked out of Q-zar because too many members of the
group were violating the 'no running' rule.
* Watching Mike 'Gamemaster' Bahr do a phenominal job on an arcade game
he had apparantly never touched before.
* Watching Jeff plead for his life with his not-quite-girlfriend whom he
had forgotten to call earlier. :)
* Hanging out with Rachel and Augie and Jeff after Q-zar as we waited and
prayed for Mike Bahr and Johnny Mastin to show up again with the car.
* Watching a drug deal go down 100 yards from where we dropped Rachel off at.
* Getting edged out of our exit lane by a bastard Queens driver and
having to make three U-turns just to get back on the damned expressway.
* Almosted getting plowed down by an ambulance while cirling Queens Blvd
looking for an entrance ramp.
* Listening to Mike Bahr's ranting lecture on why Q-zar sucks and Magic:
The Gathering is the game to end all games.
* Hanging out with Mike Bahr and Paul Cashman in their room and bugging
the hell out of Chris Oates as he tried to sleep.
* Playing Magic: The Gathering with Mike Bahr in my room and listening to
music and talking until his 5:45 plane flight back home.
* Actually beating Mike Bahr in Magic: The Gathering on my first and
only attempt to play (It was a practice round, and I knew what cards he
had, so it didn't really count, but still... :)
* Listening to Mike Bahr's jokes and Beavis and Butthead imitations.
* Surprisingly in depth discussions of different elements of DT's

* Hanging out with Rachel again on Sunday.
* Running into Paul Cashman again on our way to Manhattan.
Ok, I think I've ranted long enough... And I don't think there's much
that I have missed. I hope this gives some of you a better idea of what
a day with some DT fans can really be like, and those of you involved in
this Con something to look back on.
For those asking, yes, I am working on a Con for the midwest sometime

to make this bigger and better, and I hope that it's enough to get some
attendance. And I certainly hope that those of you on the east coast can
find the time and funds to come to this one, as we have for the ones in NY.
Well, that's it for now... I think I'm all written out. Later all...
