    About lost in the sky:

I got lucky. When I was selling bootlegs a couple of years ago, My
supplier got a copy of this and I grabbed it for myslef. One of the best
bootlegs I've ever heard. The quality is unbelievable. Plus, they played
To Live Forever and Eve, which I loved. If you ever see it get it.

This isn't from the Silent Man, last time I checked. It was from Th LiT
video where Myung tries on the kimono. Maybe it has some other kind of
meaning to "The other" Ibanez. Whatever.

A quick update on what's being bid so far:
    Dream Theater _Tragedy/Comedy_: $65

    #4: Dream Theater: Tragedy/Comedy (2CD set)
    Minimum price: $50****

This 2 CD Set is a cheap imitation from THE DANCE OF
ETERNITY, released in Germany ( - by the same guy who
gave us the Long Island Pt. 1 + 2 CD's ) in 1995 and is
available all over Europe for approx. 20 $ (+ postage) on
    any record convention ......
I do not know whether it is possible to by this "Item" in the
US, but 50 $ is a very high minimum / price for a imitation,
     last bid 65 $ / 70 $ ?

Also the "very special" CD with the DT gig at the Marquee
Club in January 1995 is available in Europe too, but the
price isn't as high as a few Jammers told us. Perhaps you've
to pay the very high price in the far east, but it is no japanese
     - limited - edition, it is a italian release "only" for a "normal"
    price.

Perhaps you're interested to know .....

PS: .... still waiting since more than six months ....

    Hey Jammers,

I have the following CDs for sale or trade. They are all originals
and have only been played 2 or 3 times each. I am getting rid of these
because I personally did not like them even though they are pretty popular
here on the jam. My asking prices are negotiable. I am willing to trade
some or all of these for the right CDs or videos. Old Savatage CDs (except
HOTMK and GB) are good trade bait as well as some of the progressive stuff.

    Galactic Cowboys - Machine Fish - $10
    Fates Warning - No Exit - $10
Magellan - Hour of Restoration - $15 (out of print)
    Altura - Mercy - $10

    1. DC

I just read someone post that he had spent a vacation in the DC area. Are
you out of your mind? Of all the places you could go on vacation you chose
to come to the home of the "Crack Mayor?" Anyway, I would not recommend this
to anyone. First of all you would surely become disillusioned, if you had
any illusions left. This is supposed to be the capital of the greatest, most
advanced society in the world (no flames) and what a pigsty. On a related
note, whenever you watch a movie that takes place in DC, notice that the
location shots (Eraser is a good example) are always shot just above street
level. Why? Because there is too much trash in the streets! Or, the streets
are always wet (especially Eraser and True Lies), like they just hosed them
    down. Hmm.
Sorry for the lack of DTC.

    2. Subconscious

100 dollars? Really? I am tempted to put mine up for sale for that kind of
    green. Quadruple your cash!

    3. Dr. X and his LV review

I disagree with your statement that LV is more reminiscent of Fates than DT.
The reason I believe this to be incorrect is because Fates *never* noodles
as long and as elaborately as DT, especially with regard to keyboards. Lemur
Voice has many of those wandering moments that are very very close to the
spirit of the Images and Words type stuff. My main quarrel with LV is that
it lacks focus. The instrumental peices (not songs, but that's another post)
are much better than the songs, in my opinion. I just can't keep focus on
this cd. Nothing is memorable. That is to say that the music doesn't have
any hooks that stay with you. I enjoy it as it goes by, but I find my mind
wandering, especially during track 6 (disc is in the car, don't know any
    titles).
The thing about Fates is that the hooks stay with you, and they are very
subtle. There is a groove, but a progressive, complicated, almost subliminal
groove to Fates that I find lacking in both DT and LV. So shoot me.

    >Echo...o...o...o...o

    >Permntwv@aol.com

First of all, it's Dream TheatER, not RE, you fool. Let's just get that out
in the open. If you're gonna knock 'em, at the very least get their name
correct. I really don't know if I should even waste my time responding to
this idiot, to be quite frank about it, but let's give it a whirl, shall
    we?

Alright, I can't say very much when it comes to The Cult for I'm pretty
ignorant when it comes to their music. But referring to Dream Theater as
sellouts? I believe your subject header exclaims my thoughts precisely at
this point (it was "are you kidding me?). If by calling them sellouts
you're alluding to the band's music getting played on AOR, then Rush would
by far be more of one than DT is. Maybe I've heard Pull Me Under a grand
total of five times on the radio in the four years or so I've been a fan.
But that's it. Never anything else besides that particular song. One could
name at least ten Rush songs that are consistantly recycled on the radio.
So when it comes to radio airplay, Rush is far and away the bigger sellout.
It seems pretty obvious to me though that they have not become a sellout.
Or did I just completely miss something?

By terming DT sellouts are you questioning the integrity of their lyrics? I
challenge you to refer to ANY one of their songs from ANY one of their
albums. Find me one that lacks emotional depth, find me one whose lyrics
don't probe the innermost thoughts and feelings of their creator, find me
one that suffers from mere superficiality. Funny how Van Halen's lyrics
don't come up, as long as you're stating bands you "like." I can think of
one, nay, maybe two or three "hot topics," as it were, prevelent in their
lyrics: Love, Girls, and oh yeah, Love. Ok. I'll grant you one concession.
Dreams. Fine, are you happy? Now don't get me wrong. I happen to love VH,
old and new. However, their lyrics do leave a whole lot to be desired the
    majority of the time.

I could in fact sit here and question many more ideas that this guy touches
upon, such as "quality of music," and more importantly, what a "true fan"
is. I'll touch on both briefly.

Are you actually saying that because we don't listen to what others' deem
"musically acceptable" or "non-commercial" (whatever that means) we're not
true fans. I happen to listen to Dream Theater, Yes, Pantera, and many
other progressive bands just as much as I listen to Rush. I listen to quite
a bit of jazz as well. Should I not be considered a true fan? Oh please, I
beg your forgiveness in the worst possible way, Sir. I'll listen to Rush
exclusively, I'll listen to them when I sleep, I'll wake up in the morning
puking up Neil's lyrics. Hell, I'll even move to Toronto if you'd like,
just so I can be considered a "true fan." Does all this seem silly to you?
Of course it does. Why? Because of the foolishness of your argument, quite
    simply.

Quality of music is not to be judged on the basis of using one's favorite
band as a paradigm for all others'. When you put a new disc or tape in your
stereo, start with a fresh head. Clean-slate. Of course it's easy for
certain elements of a particular song to remind you of some earlier passage
from another piece of music, but don't believe that just becuase a song
from a band other than Rush doesn't fulfill those same expectations as
you're used to from Rush, that this piece of music, or lyrics, or whatever,
    doesn't have merit.

With music comes quite a sensible idea. Different people are moved by
different songs in different ways. Different strokes for different folks.
That's the key. How one is actually affected by a song. You, my friend, can
listen to something by Dream Theater and say it's garbage. Others can
listen to something by Dream Theater and be moved to tears. Simply because
these people, myself included, listen to things other than what you find
appropriate, don't question our "true fanship." When it comes to Rush, the
first thing I heard from them was The Camera Eye when I was around seven
years old, and there's been no turning back ever since. Few pieces of music
affect me the way in which this song does, yet there are others that do,
and ones by other bands that you may find to be "disgraceful" in relation
to Rush. Yet I consider myself to be a "true Rush fan" (whatever that
    is/means).

There is only one Rush. No band will ever be like Rush because there is
only one Geddy, one Alex, and one Neil. No band will ever be like Dream
Theater. And so on. You get my drift. It's about what moves you, the
individual. Don't presuppose for others' musical tastes. Music is an
intensely personal experience that has transcendental capabilities, to be
sure. Many people don't have an exclusive "favorite" band. I myself have
favorite bands, namely all the ones I listen to. Different types of music
move people in different ways, whether it be metal or jazz or classical.
Please let US decide for OURSELVES what is outstanding, and in turn don't
assert your supposed musical superiority over people who happen to be just
as knowledgeable as you are, Mr. Turner.

    Thanks for staying with this...

    Dave Plotkin

    ------------------------------

Why not? It's a lot smaller area to work with considering that
most of the Jammers who would want to go are in Britain, France, or
Germany. A little longer drive for the Italian Jammers, and I'm not sure
exactly how all the Scandinavian Jammers will make it. They got that funky
tunnel under the Channel now, so it would probably work really well if it
was somewhere in France. I wonder how big Stephane's house is? :)

Someone asked about the new DT demos that some of us have heard at clinics
lately....I saw Mike in Columbus a couple of months ago and at that time he
had just come back from Australia...during the clinic he played to a demo
called 'Lines In The Sand' - it runs close to 14 minutes, starting with a
heavy synth intro and including all the great syncopations, odd times and
tasteful slower interlude towards the middle. Back then there were no
vocals yet and Mike said that it was actually the first time he had played
that piece for an audience. The second demo he did was 'You or Me' and was
more of a straight ahead metal piece - 4/4 time with vocals but the sound
system and Mikes playing made it almost impossible to distinguished the
words. Honestly I was a little disappointed in that piece simply because
of it's simplicity, almost as if that tune was their 'radio air-play' song
for the MTV crowd.....but I also know that they can't always play the same
    stuff on every tune.....

Anyway, hope that helps you out!!!!

I think Erotomania, by the nature of it's listing on the J-card, should be
referred to as the first movement of the *epic* (i think I deserve a
Twinkie for that) entitled "A Mind Beside Itself." Or did everyone forget
that Erotomania, Voices, and The Silent Man were connected in that
    fashion?
