Heh, heh, Twinkieboy! You have 2 much free time Rip. :-)
He sounds like a way premie pudzter 2 me.

About Sav, I have to say that the earlier, pre-streets stuff isn't
for everybody. Of all said albums, I recommend "Hall of the Mountain
King." I was introduced to them with this one and have thought it rokd
nadz ever since. It heavy, angry stuff. A far cry from DWD. A big
turn off for Zach fans is that Jon Oliva does all of the singing. It
was a big turn off for my friend. He hates his voice. I can
tolerate it, but he's not a very good singer, IMHO. Let's just say
he can sing well if he wants to. (Day After Day, Out on the Streets)

I also highly recommend Trans-Siberian Orchestra. It's very
Sav-sounding stuff, even if Zach doesn't sing on it. It's the only
Christmas album I ever liked. Also, most of it is original-type
stuff. Not just rewritten Christmas Carols (some is). Find it under Rock
Opera meets Santa Claus Progressive Rock Christmas at your local CD
shoppe. :-) (I had to order mine, actually) Al Petrelli is a rad
classical guitarist BTW. check it out!

I'll just go by my own damn Twinkies, then. I need some deoderant,
    too. And Enfusium. And money...

Those of us from the West coast have gotten used to the Selfish attitude of
the people from the east. I never really noticed how self absorbed they were
until I went to DC/Baltimore on vacation about a two weeks ago. Some kid in
NY caught a fly ball in a baseball game and a public official from Maryland
wanted the kid brought up on Federal charges. It was the second most
disturbing thing I've ever seen; the first being when Roberto Alomar spit in
that Umpires face. Let that be a lesson to all you kids out there who might
want a career in baseball; spit in an Umpire's face and get a five day paid
vacation. The Umpire should've had an HIV test. It would be ridiculous since
there would be NO chance of him contracting the virus. But it would've been
funny just to see what Alomar's reaction would be.

Does on have to be twenty-one or older to get into this place? It's the closest one to me; I might not be able to go to Birch Hell since I have finals the week after the show. Is it like Birch Hell and let eighteen-year olds (i.e., people my age) in? E-mail me privately please.

Did you like, talk to anyone? Someone commented on my shirt (saying "ytsejam" in passing) but walked on at the Concord G3 show. I know I was talking to two other people (whom I'd bummed a smoke from-and preaching DT-), but c'mon! Are the East Coast 'jammers, Mike Bahr, Bafu Paul Cashman the only friendlies here??? I'll pound someone on top of the head if I see someone at the Rush shows who doesn't at least come up and say, "Hey, what's goin' on, great show, catch you later." Think I'm kidding? Has anyone else picked up the new Iron Maiden greatest hits set?

I admit, I'm a sucker...bought it today despite the fact that I already have about 90% of the material on it. Thought I'd mention a couple things though for anyone who's interested in getting it.

The new song, virus, is pretty good. As you'd expect from Maiden, it's got really strong melodies. It keeps with the heavy, somewhat progressive style from the X-factor, which is fine with me. However, there's a really bad chorus that gets repeated way too much. No melody there at all. I don't like it much, and the vocals during that part are barely audible (not that the lyrics there are particularly great.)

Still, overall I'm glad to have the song. It's not a waste.

Other new things: A live version of Afraid to Shoot Strangers with Blaze Bayley singing. This is one of my favourite songs and the performance here is awesome. Very glad to have it...a big improvement over the version on a Real Live One.

I wish I could recommend this set to someone as an intro to Maiden, but I don't think the song selection is particularly good. There are a lot of absolutely fantastic songs that aren't on it, and more than a couple mediocre ones that are.

I can't understand how they would put Holy Smoke and bring Your Daughter to the slaughter on the CD and leave out tailgunner and mother russia...things like that.

also, Maiden seems to have a problem with having some songs that are such favourites they have to be on every live album, greatest hits set, video, etc, which makes each one progressively less interesting. number of the beast is a great song, but how many copies of it do you really need?

If you already have all the Maiden albums, then you're better off getting the 12" single for Virus because it has the 2 soundhouse tracks on side 2. Those three tracks are the extra songs on Best of the Beast. Plus if you have all the other albums already (and most of us longtime Maiden fans do) chances are good you can make a much better compilation on your own.

May I suggest the University of North Texas (UNT). They have by far the best jazz program in the nation. There is more music diversity in that school then I've seen anywhere. Bands like Tripping Daisy and Deep Blue Something came from there (not to say those are GREAT bands or anything), and most of the members were music majors. In fact, If you are familiar with The Pat Metheny Group, the keyboardist, Lyle Mays, went there in the late seventies (or around that time) and one of his songs was nominated for a Grammy. (The song was played by the top jazz band band, of which there are ten!!) I'm not overly familiar with their guitar program but the wind and percussion programs are top of the line and thought of very highly on campus.

Greetings fellow jammers. Well, I've been reading for ages now but really haven't had much to say because usually it's already been been said. Well, here ya go.. When I heard about the new concert dates, I was happy but also pesamistic about whether or not I could make any of the shows. Well, god has graced me with a miracle and they are playing Poughkeepsie on Dec 4th (I've missed ALL 3 Cons, and the Malibu Show) I'm NOT going to miss this. Well, I have taken it upon myself to find out more info about it and called "The Chance" . So here it is...... Tickets for an evening with Dream Theater on Dec 4th at The Chance go on sale Saturday Nov. 2nd. Tickets can be charged by phone through The Chance for $15.. thats it. To my knowledge TicketBastard is not involved in this in any way, shape or form. The Chances phone number is (914)471-1966 Now.. the place definatly sounds cool. It's an old theater that fits about 850 people And even has a balcony.. (pretty sick) and apparently that will be open. It is not a reserved seating show though. It's general admission which is better. I'm still trying to find out if you can bring a camera.... they said they're going to try and find out for, either way.. I'll keep ya posted. And on a differant note.. to add fuel to the fire.. IMHO.. All their albums are phenominal.. but "Awake" is my personal favorite.

    One word: Beethoven.

    > Of course, if you knew the exact references from which an instrumental > was written, you might also form that conclusion but I think that lyrics > are the key illustrator in most songs.

So if people didn't have language, they wouldn't be affected by intense music. I fail to understand your conclusion that we can only appreciate what we understand. Many things have elements completely foreign to me, but rather than being repelled by these things I am often intrigued. Call it curiosity. I'm amazed every time I hear the French language being spoken by anyone, even though I have no idea what they're saying. It causes an emotional response even though I have very little (zero) perception of what is being said. Music is the same way in that I don't quite understand why recognizeable words are necessary in order to enjoy it as a whole.

    > It is true that the boys are all marvels at using their respective > instruments. But that wouldn't be enough for me if the words just > couldn't measure up. Consider Steve Vai for a moment. Because instrumentals become boring after the first two > hours of listening.

If you really are making a generalization that's supposed to apply to everyone, I must inform you that you're about twelve hours short of what I would have said. So at this point we have assigned instrumentals an average "interestingness lifespan" of 6 hours.

    > Songs are composed of instrumental arrangements and lyrics. ^^^^^^^^^^ Well that sucks. Now humming will become another category of musical composition altogether. I used to like humming "La Tarantella," but now that it's not a song anymore I don't quite know what to do...

If the song is sung in a language you don't understand, then in my opinion the lyrical melody might as well be played with a flute or some other exosonic instrument. Unless you automatically identify with human voices, regardless of whether you understand them or not. Do you classify the majority of Bobby McFerrin's music as "music" or "instrumental stuff?" What about Enya?

Speaking of Enya, she hums quite a bit of her melodic compositions. Neat how even though she's using her voice, she's still creating an instrumental. Ah, sweet Logic, where are you in my hour of need?

    > I don't think you can refer to a piece as a song without lyrics. If > that were the case, we'd be calling piano concertos, symphonies and > every other form of musical expression a song as well.

If that were the case, we might have to lump all those centuries of non-lyrical classical music in with the rest of "music" and call them (gasp!) "songs." I'm sure men like Tchaikovsky and Sibelius are sleeping all the more peacefully in their graves, knowing we haven't attached these blasphemous titles to their violin/cello/other compositions.

    > When I go through Awake, I refer to all of the tracks as songs > except Erotomania, which I term an instrumental due to it's lack of > vocal content.

I wonder what the band memebers would have to say about this issue?

    > Well, you may be that person, but I'm sure many people have one > artist who they identify with due to the lyrical content of the > material.

Actually, the main artist I identify with has only recently begun using lyrics in his music. I have always identified with his music, even before knew what he looked like or that he could speak at all. I'd say about half of the albums I own are devoid of lyrics.

There. Those disagreements should get this place good and loaded for another war. Enjoy.

Of course I'm not talking to Mojoman. I'm talking to YOU. :)

    > ** The list has lost a great deal of its power.

Whew... As far as directly influencing the members of Dream Theater (and that brilliant maneuver of re-building Brazil into a major economic world power last summer), yes I'd agree that, well, our influence is seriously wearing thin. As far as taking a hazy idea and transforming it into a concrete reality, I disagree with Mojo 100%.

Want proof? Ytsecon III. Pat Griffin's shirts. Mike Bahr's Dream Thea--er, Majesty discs. These are all products of intense collaboration and discipline. As far as "power" goes, I'd say that when a ragtag group of people spread out over a country as huge as this one can pool resources and come up with some of the finished products I've seen, not to mention the trading network going on, that's power enough.

I'm still about ten behind, so I have to agree with Mojo on this point. Sadly, I will be posting a full, possibly ecstatic, review of G3 when I see it here in Seattle, even though I know that none of the members of Dream Theater are going to be in that show. I will refrain if the List Emperor decrees that I should not do such a thing, but otherwise I'm going to milk the "related topics" clause for all it's worth.
