    Hi Jammers

I know this sort of thing on the jam is annoying but...
    >Date: Fri, 25 Oct 1996 18:03:09 -0400 (EDT)
    >From: "Gary M. Gettier" <gmg@mtolympus.ari.net>
    >Subject: Looking for this prog and metal stuff
    >
    >This looks like as a good a place as any. I'm looking for this prog and
    >metal stuff. My for sale/trade list is at the end.......

I have made random contacts with such traders and it is a GOOD deal for
me each time (I have VAUXDVIHL and EPICA on the way, wahoo!!).

Maybe we could set aside a day or so or a jam or two and have
a chance to list our trade lists without pissing everyone off. In this
era of an extensive underground progressive fan base linked by computer,
I think that this sort of contact and music exchange is too good to pass
    up.

Any better ideas for exchanging this sort of information?? I know the jam
is not a trade list but could it facilitate such activity? Maybe there is a
progressive rock/metal trade list and I do not know about it??

BTW, the tapeswap organized last month by Ed Reed is really great. Thanks goes to
    him for making it happen.

    Some DTC:
    I have a taped copy of a radio-rebroadcast of a DT concert from 22 November 1994
in Denver Colorado. DT played with FATES WARNING in Mammoth Event Center
and the DT set (well most of it - approx 90 mins) was recorded and broadcast
commercial-free about four night later on KBPI here in Denver. I simply taped
it off the radio. It is called "Waking Up The World" and is a prettu good reproduction.
Is this bootleg good for anything (Mike Bahr?) or would dubs of it be of any
interest to jammers? I am pretty naive about bootlegs so no flames please.

    Bye
    Kevin D.

    Hey!

I was at a CD store yesterday and they had a boot CD of the second night of
the Metallica Fan Club only show at Slim's in SF from June 10, 1996. Since
we have many Metallica fans on the Jam I thought I'd offer it up for a
possible tape tree. The set was approx. :100 long and has an extra song that
they didn't play the first night. I don't have a DAT deck, but the master is
an audience recording from a DAT and the quality is EXCELLENT! The store I
bought it at lets you listen before you buy, or else I wouldn't have paid
    the $50 for it.

What I'd like to do is I would get four or five people to send me tapes with
SASE and I would dub the tapes and send them back to them. Then those people
would make copies for two people. If I get more requests than that then we
would make the tree larger. It all depends on how many requests I get. I
realize this isn't the Metallica list, but there are many Metallica fans
here, and most people on the Ytsejam have been good to me over the last year
and this is a small way of me to show my appreciation.

    Here is the setlist:
So What, Creeping Death, Sad But True, Ain't My Bitch, Whiplash, Fade To
Black, King Nothing, One, Until It Sleeps, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Wherever
I May Roam, Nothing Else Matters, Enter Sandman, Last Caress (with Jim
Martin, ex-FNM), Master of Puppets (first Half), Overkill, Motorbreath.

I'm not on the Jam at this time, so PLEASE email me PRIVATELY! I'll give it
a few days and send an update on Monday. When replying, please let me know
if you can be a Limb, Branch, or leaf.

limb = analog copy directly from DAT recorded CD. Make copy for limb
branch = copy of an analog copy, make dubs for leaf
    leaf = dub from branch.

You wrote in the last jam wanting to know the best place to see DT.
I went to see them at the Birch Hill last year and I felt it was an amazing
show. A friend that went with me saw them the night before and said they
were better in the Birch Hill. When I talked to Portnoy at Derek's party he
even said he like the Birch Hill the best of all the Christmas shows. Just
be ready to get squashed in the crowd wherever you go. I'm going to the
Birch Hill this year again. Well, it is the closest to me too. Any
    questions? e-mail me.

    Hello,

I am new to the mailing list and this is my first post. Can anybody give me some information on the new album? I have seen what is said to be a songlist on the Lifting Shadows website, but does anybody know what the album will be titled or know of any working titles? I underestand that the song "Metropolis pt. II" has been taken off of the album. Will it be released at all? Has anybody heard this song? I heard that it has been recorded as a demo and that's all. I have heard that some songs that will appear on the new album (such as "Raise The Knife") have been played live and are on some bootlegs. Has anybody heard this? If so, how does it sound? Derek Sherinian said that his style of playing the keyboard is more American, while Kevin Moore's style has a more European feel to it. This American style did not show up on "A Change Of Seasons" because he had no part in writing the song. I only heard a touch of this in the so-called "Awake Heavy Jam" played at the 1/24/95 show at the Urwawa Bunka Center in Saitama, Japan (and probably other shows as well). What this means is that the new album will contain less strings and more synthesiezer effects. Derek Sherinian is used to playing this way because of other bands he has toured with I assume. I heard that the album is going to be a mix between its two predecessors, Images And Words and Awake. This is often what a band will do with a third album or a forth in this case.

I have kind of gotten carried away on another subject, but the main purpose of this post is for me to find out more information on the Dream Theater album. Also, is there any information about the release date or a tour?

I appreciate any replies. Thank you.

    Hello,

I am looking for a copy of the shows performed during the end of the Awake tour (12/29, 12/30). I think that one of these shows was played at Old Bridge, NJ. I know that both of them contain "A Change Of Seasons" and possibly "Scarred". Does anyone have a copy of one of these shows that they would like to trade. I would only want really good sound quality. If you like Metallica or Megadeth. I have some very good shows to offer. Please reply, if you can help at all. Thank you.

Okay, I have just received confirmation on the Birch Hil show. It WILL go ahead as originally planned on the 14th, and NOT the possible revised date of the 7th. The band will just go on stage later that night than originally planned for this show, so that anyone going to see Rush that evening can get along as well.

    Cheers,

I wouldn't worry terribly much if they're selling tickets to the DT show, but if the regular Thursday crowd can get in by paying admission at the door, get there early and dress to sweat.

    > 3- They have tons of security. I'm not sure if this is always the case > since Marshall Tucker was playing and maybe they were expecting a rowdy > crowd. I did notice that most of the place was drunk even before the > opening band went on.

They *ALWAYS* have tons of security, even when local cover bands are playing. Huge guys (the term brick shithouse comes to mind) with headset radios, ready to kick ass on anyone that sneezes funny.

    ----

In other news, I recently picked up a CD called "VH-1 Crossroads." Pretty cool stuff, from the likes of Blues Traveler, k.d. lang, Del Amitri, etc. But the big deal is that there's a recording of Tori playing Springsteen's "I'm On Fire", and a Quicktime Movie too! It's pretty cool. I'm no huge Tori fan, but I liked it. Get this disc if you like Tori. Also, a lot of the tracks on here are unreleased live stuff that sounds pretty cool.

That's it for now. Oh, yeah, Richie and I got our tickets for the Chance, so see you all there!

I'd say, when in doubt, ask. For example, I wouldn't be irritated if someone wrote on the sleeve, but I'd certainly want those cases to be enclosed! I don't tend to mention that to other people, though, because I've sort of assumed that that's a standard thing. However, if someone *didn't* want the cases (or whatever), I'd sure hope s/he would communicate that with me beforehand.

    >Another question about trading etiquette...Is it appropriate behavior, if >someone is sending you 5 or 6 tapes and you're only sending blanks, to >wait for the other person's package to arrive before you ship? I don't >know. If there is a page somewhere with trading rules, I would >appreciate it if someone would post it so people (myself included) could >check it out and maybe learn something.

If I'm the one doing the dubs, I wait for the blanks to arrive. That way, if someone wants the dub on a particular type of cassette, then it goes right onto the cassette they've selected and shipped.

Oh, and since I'm sending mail anyway, you can add me into the camp that's weary of this whole racism discussion going on! :(

    Hiyis

Is there any chance (however slight) that DT might come down to Australia for the next tour?

Seeing as Mike was here for some drum clinics, at least one of them know that we exist, so does anyone know if there's even the slightest possibility they might stop by?

Knowing my luck, they *will* come, but only go to Sydney and Melbourne, just like Iron Maiden did the last time they were here... completely ignoring Brisbane, thus not allowing me the chance to see Bruce live with the band...

    Oh well...

    Hey All ....

Here is my new weekly posting about how to get the most (or least if you don't like us) out of the ytsejam. This will be coming out weekly (hopefully) at least for a while since we are quickly gaining subscribers since school is now back in session. I may post it less often after a while, but for now, it will be weekly.

To get on to the Dream Theater Mailing List:

replace Your Name with your real name (eg: Ryan Skadberg). You should recieve a confirmation letter in the your mailbox within 24 hours. If you do not, mail ytsejam-owner@ax.com and I will help you out as soon as possible.

To change the mode you recieve the Dream Theater Mailing List in: There are two ways you can recieve the ytsejam. The first is in digest which is the default. This sends you a large message which contains 15-20 emails each. The other is ack mode, which means you recieve each piece of mail as it comes through. To do this:

Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com For the subject of the message put:

    asdf

In the body of the message put:

    set ytsejam mail ack

You should recieve a confirmation letter within 24 hours. If you don't, once again, please mail ytsejam-owner@ax.com and I will help you out as soon as I can.

To recieve files from the Dream Theater Mailing List:

There are many files kept by the mailing list server. The biggest group are old issues of the jam. It is archived since 1275. If you are looking for an issue earlier than that, please mail ytsejam-owner@ax.com and I will see what I can do. There are also other files kept on the server. These include Mike Bahr CD Updates, The "UnOfficial" Dream Theater SongBook and some others. Any time I add something I usually send a post to the jam so everyone knows about it. To get a list of the files available from the server:

Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com For the subject of the message put:

    asdf

In the body of the message put:

    index ytsejam

This will send you a list of all the files available from the server. To retrieve one of these files:

Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com For the subject of the message put:

    asdf

In the body of the message put:

    get ytsejam filename

In place of filename, put the name of the file you want.

    Basic Rules:

There are some basic rules to the jam which make everyone's reading alot more pleasant. Please try and follow them as closely as possible. I will send out warnings to people who blatantly disobey these. You get one warning, a second offense will get your jam priviledges taken away.

    1. Do not post just for the sake of posting. There is already a lot of valid traffic on this list, we don't need unnecessary posts which are a waste of everyone's time. The basic rule you should all try to follow is to think before you post.

    2. No Top Ten (Five, Twenty, Thirty, etc) lists. These lists are a waste. They take up alot of bandwidth and fill up everyone's mailbox much faster than they would like it filled up. If you want to know everyone's top somethings, please ask for ALL responses to be mailed directly to you. This has been done with the end results posted to the jam and it was very very nice.

    3. Do not start / participate in / complain about long off-topic discussions. These have gotten WAY out of hand in the past. If one starts, I will post once saying to stop and take it to private email, anyone continuing the discussion will recieve a warning. These include such topics as God, NIN, Blind Melon, bands selling out, etc.

    4. Private E-Mail is a wonderful thing. Use it when you think it may be more useful than posting to the jam.

    5. Last, but not least, this is YOUR ytsejam. I am around, and I do administrative work, but I do not say what can/cannot be talked about (most of the time) or moderate in any real way. I am the Ytsejam Administrator more than Moderator. Don't complain if the jam seems to be going downhill, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Basically, that is all the basic info. As always, if you have any problems feel free to mail me. I get ALOT of mail on a daily basis, so it sometimes takes me a while to get back to you, but 99% of the time, I will get back to you eventually.

Thanks for Reading and Enjoy the List!!!

Ok, here's all of the correct info on StarClassics, Tama, and Mapex.

Tama is owned by Hoshino (they own Ibanez as well). Mapex is now owned by Washburn (they also own SoundTech, and of course, Washburn Guitars). Mapex used to be owned by Gibson, and if you know a lot about drum companies that Gibson owned in the past (they used to own Pearl, and now own Slingerland) you'd know that they don't keep them long. Where does StarClassics fit in? Hoshino owns them. They now own 2 drum companies. What I heard that they did, was get the very best drum makers (I know stringed instrument makers are called Luthiers, but what are drum makers called?) and proceeded to create StarClassics. They're distributed through Tama. So, Tama, StarClassics, and Ibanez are sister companies. Mapex has NOTHING to do with Tama or SC. Looks like 2/5 of DT have endorsements from Hoshino companies... Now if Hoshino would only buy Tung, Korg, and whatever brand of mics that LaBrie uses...well, that would totally rok nadz. ;)

I'm sorry if sounded like a smartass. I'm really surprised I know all this, because I don't play drums, I play bass. Maybe it's a rhythm section thing. :)

Oh, damn, I'm so interested in this post.

    >> Goodbye to all my friends! I must take the route of Mojoman and >>unsubscribe. >> Elen sila lumenn omentilmo, Mithrandir > >These two fucking hipocrits are the same idiots who had this stupid flame >fest going on where they would say these nasty things to each other on the >Jam and then get together at a bar and have a few drinks and talk about how >fucking clever they were. In the mean time we had to read this shit jam >after jam, for what seemed like an eternity. If anyone knows Frank or John >Cahill, tell them I said good fucking riddance!

Well, I'd like to get rid of another hypocrite that I know of off this list...I won't name any names...I'll give you a few clues.

    1. This person proceeded to piss everyone on #ytsejam off big time by being a total jerk (no, not Jimmy or Sledge).

    2. This person, in fear of this getting to the list, lurked for a month or two.

    3. This person can't spell hypocrite right.

    4. This person came back to the list, and attempted to start a few more flame wars. (how's that for a hypocrite?)

    5. I wish that this person would go back to lurking and stop flooding the jam with his repeated barrage of flames.

    6. If I met this person I'd say (in the words of one of the Andy Millers') "Stick your thumb up your ass and cluck like a chicken, you SUCKHOLE!!!" :)

Hmmm, what else should I mention? Oh yeah, saw Rush on the 23rd at the new Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids (Michigan). Fookin' amazing. Comments on the show? Well, the mixing was a little off at the beginning of Dreamline and Leave That Thing Alone. 2112 well, was 2112 (in other words, amazing). Neil's drum solo seemed to be more entertaining than on the Counterparts tour. On YYZ, Neil threw up his stick, and well, I hate to tell you guys this, but he dropped it. I felt so bad for him, considering that I heard a few "Boo"s in my section. I don't blame it on Neil at all. What actually happened was that his stick hit a cymbal that wasn't there on his previous sets. He was so used to throwing it that way, well, he just threw it that way on instinct. But, hey, we're all entitled to mistakes. IMO, Geddy stole the show, his bass was WAAAAY up front.

Oh, for some more DTC, I saw 2 guys there with DT Awake shirts. I'd like to hear from someone who wore a DT Awake shirt to the Oct 23rd Rush show at the Van Andel Arena. I was too much of a wuss to go up and say something to either dude. :)

Well, enough of my ramblings for one post.

    Umm, damn, no sig.
