Don't be sorry. This *is* DTC. We are people that share common
interests, and I think it's great every time I get to meet a fellow
Jammer. As far as I'm concerned, anyone that thinks they're going
somewhere where other jammers will be, let us know!

No, this is a real CD from Atlantic. Ought to be available in stores.

Josh, can you check these dates? Some of us already have our tickets for Dec. 4th, and today is only October 28th.

I was under the impression that JLB was illin' that day, like he had a cold or some other ailment, and was rather bitter about the fact that he had no choice but to go on, since it was a PPV show and all. To me, however, his voice sounds relatively better than on most other boots I've heard. Touring really seems to get the better of him. Of course, my high opinion of him remains fixed, regardless of seemingly incrminating boots. James rules!

Manson? I thought it was Mr. Pork-In-My-Toe as well. Also, I do believe the "romance novel looking guy" in the drawring is Chris Collins. There's a picture on the back of the Majesty Demos disc of the band looking all sorts of 80's metal-teen-ish, and Chris has on a L'Amour Rocks t-shirt. I get a kick out of MP's Queensryche t-shirt. Reminds me of my old Rage For Order shirt I picked up when Ryche opened for Ozzy. Oh, the good ole days........

A lot of us Jammers consider Tori a goddess (including myself), however, anyone else out there into Ani DiFranco? Not that the two are similar, but they are kind of on the same wavelength. Gotta give Ani's new release "Dialate" a thumbs up.

Sorry so off topic, just randomly curious.

First of all, I have to say to all of you who are going to get to see any of the East Coast shows this December....YOU SUCK!! :)

No, actually...it's actually a great idea to play a few shows with their new material to work out the kinks. That means that by the time they drag their asses to the mountains of Colorado, they should be really cooking! Now, I know that some kind soul is going to be taping the show...so maybe I can get a copy of one (or more) of the shows. It's a shame that Brian Cox had such problems last time with his tape tree....last year's Birch Hill concert boot was excellent (thanks Brian!).

Mike Portnoy finally made it to the Denver area last night to put on one of his drum clinics. My first thoughts as I walked into the Arvada Center was "where the hell did all of these people come from?!!" The place was packed full of people...from metalheads, to high school percussion groups, to parents with their kids...what fantastic diversity!

I know that most of you have already read the rundown on the Portnoy drum clinics...but here's a brief synopsis of what transpired:

Mike played 3 new DT songs!!! Playing along with a DAT, he started with "Room to Breathe" (was that the title?). Incredible song that clocked in at around 10 minutes. From there, he discussed some of his techniques and started explaining his Numbers method for percussion arrangements. Later, he played "Raise the Knife", also excellent. You couldn't make out KJL's vocals very well over Mike's massive kit, but they do sound more controlled, yet still has the edge on it like on Awake. Mike then started breaking down the middle section of Metropolis and explaining how he came up with the different parts. After some questions, and more examples from "Take the Time" , "6:00", and "The Ytsejam", he played the last new song called "Peruvian Skies". What a song!! He introduced it as the mellowest and hardest of the new DT songs on the new LP. He was right. Relatively straight forward and mellow at the beginning, swelling up to a killer crunch groove towards the end. He took a few more questions, and then played "Erotomania" along with the DAT, then snuck out to towel off. After Drum City, the local sponsor came up to raffle off some t-shirts, hats, jacket, and cymbal (the owner said that this was the largest attendance he's ever had for a drum clinic. They sold over 350 tickets before the day of the show...and it looks like everyone showed up!), Mike came out and patiently took time to handle a HUGE line of fans wanting autographs.

At this point, I shagged out to the car, completely pumped up from the past 2 hours. Mike is doing everyone; drummers and non-drummers alike a great service with these clinics. I can't think of a better way that a musician could spend his time away from their band. This clinic was truely awe inspiring. Imagine all of the musicians who are and will be influenced by Mike simply because he took the time to share tips and techniques with everyone.

BTW...I was the only person with a ytsejam shirt on....were none of you there last night? Or did you just not want to be "that guy"! :)

Mike also mentioned Metropolis Pt. II as making Pt. I look like a trip to Disneyland. He also mentioned the double CD thing again, as if they still hadn't completely ruled it out. They definitely have enough music for it. However, he mentioned next SUMMER before the CD will be released! You guys better polish up your DAT's for these December shows...I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL SUMMER!!

Chompin' at the bit for new grooves....

    Tom Baddley

"Well, I do have a third arm...but I'm not using it on that section." Mike Portnoy in response to a fan's question.

Hi everyone!! not quite as big a post... length rejected.

    1. There is no number 1. 2. A review: DREGS of the Internet, quite a CD! 3. Scoobaca's breakup and the story involved.

    2. the Dregs review. So I open my mail packet and see this DREGS of the Internet disc staring back up at me. Interesting. The packaging is fairly cool, and the songs are conveniently listed with artist on the back for my reviewing convenience. I pop the disc in and jot about a two-sentence note on each song as I go.

First off, the sound quality is, as one might think, superb. It's kind of a no-brainer in this case: these are all studio recordings and none of them are lacking for clarity or power. I could easily have bought this disc from a regular store.

Clockwork's "Reflections" is OK, the sound is very "old-prog" ish. The singer reminds me of Charlie Dominici, the band possibly of Savatage, but not quite. I'll give this track a B-, since it's not too compelling.

Happenstance's "Seeing Is Believing" is a nice step up, and a worthy song. This is almost DT-ish, the sound is more like Sav or Fates but more positive, more driving. I like it. A-.

Mirror's "Foolish Shadows" could have been better. The singer is really going nuts on the vibrato, and some of the changes aren't really necessary. This is the first song on the disc where the guitarist does not sound tight with the bassist and drummer. it's STILL decent, just not as good as what I've heard so far. C-.

Cold Front's "Seasons Forgive" is actually pretty good. The band has a really solid, tight, thick sound, which I like. The riffs are decently thought out, and I can apprecaite the vocals. B.

3250's "Fear Itself" was a smack in the ass... this band sucks. In my humble opinion. Sorry guys, it's just not happening. But maybe it's very exciting for other prog fans... just not me. Just doesn't work with me at all. Far too harsh and not nearly smooth and tight enough. D-.

Psychedelic Lullabies "Bad Communication" is an interesting song, for certain. The drummer and bassist keep doing these neat fills throughout that don't do a lot to help the song flow, but really sound neat, almost like a Primus improv. The band sound is more like Sav though. The singer sounds a great deal like Syrinx did at the Con. Not bad. B.

Facade's "Light Years" is cool to hear in style, structure, and execution. I like this one. Nice harmony vocals, sort of a low but rich vocal style. Rhythm is tight and the guitarist takes heavily after mr. Alex Lifeson. The time changes in this one are well-timed and well-incorporated. Overall, Facade succeeds with this tune. A.

Inferno's "The Second Hand" is hands-down the best tune on this disc. The harmony vocals are top-notch and the guitar work is impressive, but mainly this band sounds SO TIGHT and SO disciplined that the song itself really cooks, I think this one goes onto my next truck tape. The drum work is outstanding, I'm happy with the bassline, and being a big King's X and Galactic Cowboys fan, you can imagine what I think of the singing. A+.

The Age of Reason's "What You Will" is a nice lengthy effort that maybe misses the mark just by a nudge. I just couldn't grab ahold of this one and it sure the hell didn't grab me, though it did NOT suck. The musical execution is without complaint, so I have to blame songwriting and structuring as the flaws here. C+.

Naked's "Idols" is a song that I am still working on. It's tight and it plays out well, and it's not really all that long. However, it's... interesting. It lacks a solid hook, so I'm just getting used to the subtlety of the structure. Until then, I have to give it an average grade, boosted by the keen "Naked" bumpersticker that came in the packet. Hey, who says bribery doesn't work! :) B-.

Nature's Call's "The Running Man" is subdued yet compelling. Fantastic rhythm work on this one, and the bass line is very nice. Singing could improve some, but nothing's perfect. Keyboard work gets the nod here, I'm happy with the atmospheric sounds being used here. Vocal harmonies are a plus when they're used. Finally, this band chose about the coolest band name I've heard in months. A-.

Finally, Atlantis gives us "Spiral Into Nine", a nine-minute exercise I'm still listening to for more. I can say that it doesn't suck, because if it did, I'd just not bother with it any more. But I can't say what I'll finally think of it. Probably worth some listens. Grade I (incomplete).

Overall, would I purchase this disc if I had to do it all over again, knowing what it contained? I'd say yes. This one's worth your time if you dig the style that I think most of us dig here on the Jam. I'll be saving this post to use on newsgroups if people ask about the disc, I think. Check it out, the address is way up higher in this post, but it can be ordered directly I think.

    3. Finally! The word on the Scoobaca breakup.

Yes, unfortunately, I'm without a band... just as we were set to do some shows and demos.

On the fortunate side, Johan, Taz, and I all remain the best of friends (we were the real core of the band, since we were still working with session singers at the time) because none of this had anything to do with personalities or any of that BS. No drugs either, and no musical differences, since there were no real conflicts till now.

Each member was just beset by a challenge that they couldn't surmount and still keep the band going.

Taz's car died completely, and he had to pay his entire monthly meal ticket into it to get it going again... and had no money left over to even EAT. He had to sell his drum kit and the PA speakers to get by.

Johan had a heartbreak of some sort, and we decided not to delve any more deeply into it, but the result of it has him moving to Washington state to work at a hospital there (he's in the medical field full-time) and to bug Bafu if he can find him.

As for me, my fiance Melissa got sued for bad debt all over the place, and all of a sudden I found myself about $7000 poorer than I was before. Since I owned the band's soundboard and amps, and processors, and all that shit, I have to sell it all plus my bass amp and (God I hope not) even my bass. Don't any of you Jammers worry about me financially... my parents and Melissa's are helping her get through this, and my CD business will rage on as strong as ever. On top of that, her car died and I had to buy a used Saturn to keep us both working. Argh, the pressure. :) There was neither the time nor the money for band at that point.

So while we may re-form again and we will always remember the adventures of Scoobaca in a positive way, we have to call it a night for now. Onward, and with better luck we hope, we face whatever comes next.

    Take it easy everyone!

    - Mike Bahr - durnik@goodnet.com - Scoobaca has fallen.

That's not all! :) I also already have my tickets to the Jason Becker Benefit... I'll be seeing Van Halen with Gary singing, among other totally new performances.

I have not decided whether or not I'm going to the Mercyful Fate show on Monday Nov.4... because I hear John McGlaughlin, Al DiMeola, and Paco DeLucia may be coming to town as well, to play Orchestra hall. I can't be going to concerts every night... my girlfriend would kill me! :)

HEY JAMMERS, It's me again, I know it has been a while since I last posted, sorry. I was wondering if you guys/gals could lend me a hand. You see, I have been very busy and I haven't had a chance to order any new DT bootlegs, so I was wondering if any of you would like to trade copies of any DT bootleg, either on video or on tape. I own two bootlegs; "WAKE UP" recorded live in Japan off the Awake tour, and "A Kick In To A Dream" recorded live in NY also off the Awake tour, both of these are on CD. I am willing to either trade a cassete copy of any one of my bootlegs for a copy of a different bootleg, or buy a cassete copy of a bootleg. Ok I'll post this One More Time (QR content)

Anyone who wants to know what the favorite album/song/band/underwear among progheads is, surf the web! there are tons of sights that have polls you can fill out and see the results of regarding fave songs etc. Unfortunately I don't know the URL of any, but just look around they're everywhere.
