    Thus sayeth Mr. Bahr...

    >Hey everyone. Tickets for the Birch Hill show go on sale TOMORROW
    >MORNING... that's 10/30/96... WEDNESDAY

I read this thing at about 7:00 pm and practically flipped my wig.
Dialing madly, I punched in the numbers for the TicketBastard in Philly.
Five minutes of hold and four of incompetant operator ("They're playing
at the Dream Theater?") learned me this - I had to call the NJ TM. And
so I did - and learned Birch Hill tix don't go on sale 'til the 2nd of
Nov. Hopefully, this guy wasn't an ignoramous as well, and I was told
    the truth...

Anywho, today in Music of the '90s (a course in which I'm getting
105%!!), we began our playing of music samples, to learn us "song
analyzation" (for those kids that don't know what a verse or a chorus is
    - these kids make up 87.3% of my class). So, anyhow, mine got picked
("Take The Time"), along with two others to be played. Due to smart
thinking on the part of Teach, TTT wasn't started until about five
minutes before the period ended (this was after a "Uhhh, there's not
enough time..." comment by me). No offense to any Pantera or GNR fans,
but how can "November Rain" and "Becoming" have precedence over DT?
    What a hose-job!

As always, there were some interesting comments:

"Pah! Metal?!" -- Jeff, kid who brought in Pantera sample

And an interesting conversation with Tim Lewis before the tape was
    played:

TIM: What kind of music is this?
    ME: Progressive metal.
    TIM: Is that like industrial?
ME: Er, no. It's a lot more like progressive metal, actually.
TIM: Sounds like a spaghetti sauce.

I got a demo tape from a Texas band called Power of Omens in the mail
today. Their sound? Picture Queensryche minus one of the guitars, with
a keyboardist in 'is place. The drumming resembles Mark Zonder's, and
the vocalist is almost a dead-ringer for Geoff Tate. Mix in a bit of
Dream Theater too... Makes for an astounding combo. The tape's free,
    available by E-mailing ProgRocker@aol.com.

Since I've taken up so much space already, I might as well add this lil'
    query o' mine...

    Hi, I'm a keyboardist looking for a synthesizer (or a sampler -
(dis)advantages?). Any suggestions? Keep in mind I ain't made of money
(pails, snails, and puppy-dog tails more like), so price would be a
factor here. Also, this would be a "primary" instrument, not just
another piece to add to a rig (were it that I *had* a rig... <sigh>).

    Thanks for your time,

    Brian Henderson, Cyberburlap

Hi! I know I haven't posted in ages, sorry about that. I just wanted to
let everyone know that I tried to get tickets for Birch Hill three times
today. At first I was told that they didn't go on sale until noon. I
tried after noon and was told they don't go on sale until Sat. November 2
at noon. I just tried again and got the same story about Saturday. Did
we get wrong info or has someone else had any luck? If not, try Saturday,
    not before then.

    Um..

you know i had to step in here.

NOTHING JON ANDERSON CAN DO WILL EQUAL THE SHEER POWER
THAT IS DRAMA. Chris might be able to, but until I get Downes/Horn back,
Drama is the greatest Yes album, and i'll say the greatest ALBUM ever
    made.

LET ME REPEAT: DO NOT COMPARE A LIVE ALBUM TO MAKE MONEY WITH THE
    GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME.

you think i made my point clear? i think so.

I find it strange that DT would plan a show on the same
night as Rush. I beleive Rush is playing on Long Island the
same night as the Birch Hill show[sat Dec 14] Someone said the
DT show will start at 12:00 midnight, to allow all the Rush
attendees to also see DT. Now Rush plays for 3 hours Albany
and Buffalo both ended at 11:05 pm by time your in your car
and out of traffic its past 11:30. How is it possible to
attend both? not to mention I'm physically exausted after a
Rush show, and then endure 2 hours of being smushed[which I
normally really enjoy] I think its impossible to attend both ,
but if this was the only DT show I would of course choose DT.
But I will be attending the first 4 shows I'm very pumped to
get my FIX FOR 96 !!!!!!

Yeah, no kidding. I was wondering the same thing myself when I saw that
Mike was making several stops in the L.A./Orange county area. I guess
I'll just have to wait until AFTER the next album's released, 'cuz I

    Regarding the MTV metal special:

I saw the MTV special this summer when it first ran. They were just
reviewing the 80s metal era, discussing its high points and its
demise. There were a lot of very interesting interview clips with
some of the big names of the time and these were very revealing.
Most of the guys seemed very mellow about the whole thing and not in
the least bit bitter about being pushed aside by Cobain et al. It
was quite refreshing to see that they had some class and could talk
about their experiences with some intelligence and charm. Lita Ford,
on the other hand, was just a bitter old bitch. There's a reason
your music wasn't popular, Lita. That's because it was dumb.
You tried to play with the boys and you lost. Get over it and get
over yourself. I was impressed by the girl from Vixen (an even more
unknown band than Lita's various incarnations) who basically said
"Hey, it was fun. It's over, I'm doing other things with my life
now." As for any "comeback" of the 80s sound, wait about 10 years.
Remember, KISS' tour is all stuff from '78 and before. Therefore
the tour is not designed to resurrect an 80s ethos. Van Halen was
also quite popular before the 80s thing, so the fact that they're
still "hip" isn't evidence of an impending 80s rehash, but rather of
Van Halen's longevity as a single band. Besides, people who
desparately want an 80s comeback are just desparate for their
    childhood/adolescence. I don't think I would get into a new Poison
album the way I did back then (ok...I admit it...go ahead..flame
me...). In 10 years, I'll go to the money-making reunion concerts,
but until then, I've got way too much other music to listen to and
really get to know. Shouldn't we all????

I think the third party idea is great. You hit it right on the head go
to private e-mail first. Chuck had e-mailed me privately a while back so he
had every right to be worried. As far as reading the Jam I read every one
scanning for subjects of interest. :^) The problem is when I purchased my
new computer (IBM Aptiva C73 200Mhz Pentium Tower) I ran into a problem and
ended up with a back up of e-mail including 100 ytsejams.' The M-wave card
blew on me and I had to transfer my whole system, hardware and software,
twice. :^( Not cool!!! Everything is working now so there should be no

I was just passing along info from _DT MANAGEMENT_ that the
tickets were to go on sale today... if you all don't like getting info
from the front office, I'm sure I can just not post it when I hear it from
now on. :) (I mean geez... talk about ingratitude!!)

Actually, I would expect DT to be in attendance at the rush show, so
you'll probably have as much time to get to birch hill as they will :)

    Hi jammers !

I just noticed that Kevin's page is working again, but
there isn't really an update or something. :(
I'm still waiting for an e-mail by Kev, but I'm afraid
I won't get one. So all we can do is wait ...

    Take care,
    Wolf.

    Hey,

I saw the last 5 minutes as well. I was tuning in to watch Beavis and
    Butthead.

On 2 Saturdays in the last couple of months MTV aired their It Came From
the 80's special where they talk to the 80's hard rock bands and play
videos from those bands. I missed the first airing but managed to tape
the second airing. I haven't watched it yet but i will sometime...

The fact that eMpTyV aired this special twice gives me hope...
