I got a demo tape from a Texas band called Power of Omens in the mail
today. Their sound? Picture Queensryche minus one of the guitars, with
a keyboardist in 'is place. The drumming resembles Mark Zonder's, and
the vocalist is almost a dead-ringer for Geoff Tate. Mix in a bit of
Dream Theater too... Makes for an astounding combo. The tape's free,
    available by E-mailing ProgRocker@aol.com.

I received a copy of this as well and the description he gives is right
on. It is well worth getting and you can't beat the price...

I also got a free sampler demo from the band Eternity. This has
samples of songs from their 4 releases and is worth a listen as well. I
believe they have a website but I don't know the address offhand. It
could probably be found via a search engine. If not e-mail me and I
will see if it is on the tape anywhere.

    Jammers,

I'm in Virginia right now, but will be in NJ on the 14th fortunately. Does
anyone have the number to TicketShafter or whoever will be selling the
Birch Hill tickets? Would I be able to call a DC Ticketmaster outlet to
order? I don't think I can, so a number would be greatly appreciated
    before the 2nd. Thanks!

Simple. "November Rain" was made into a really neato video that had lots
of close-ups and drama and Stephanie Seymour. So far DT's videos have only
featured two of those elements. "Becoming" has the coolest kickdrum riff
since VH's "Hot For Teacher." Portnoy has yet to dig a ditch into the
world of music with an original solo-kick riff...

Heh... "Yeah, progressive metal is like spaghetti sauce, 'cause whatever
style of music you like, IT'S IN THERE!! BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!"

As for "It Came From The 80's," (which, coincidentally, could be the title
for a post referring to something from the last 'jam) I saw this when it
was broadcast in July or August of this past summer. What a gem. It had
Def Leppard explaining why metal died. The conclusion they arrived at was
that "all these bands came along and imitated our sound." Then Lita Ford
closed things (actually she gave spiteful commentary throughout the entire
show) with "what the FUCK happened to my rock and roll?" There were lots
of other soundbites from other musicians and videos here and there, and
several choice videos got airtime for the first time in years. It was
loads of fun to watch, even though my hair has never reached a distance
longer than three inches from my scalp.

I guess this post will occur in YJ #1981. '81 was a good year. I was six
years old. In September of that year I stepped out of candyland and
into... Grade School. Everyone wore Big Z sneakers. Or Pumas. Or, if you
could jump really high and wanted to pretend you had a pouch, Kangaroos.
    Those were the days...

What do Jammers think of Journey? How about the new Journey?

I know they are not prog but they are great musicians and Steve Perry has
a great set of lungs. I think that if he wanted to he would fit in fine
    with a prog metal band.

I like the new Journey a lot especially since unlike a lot of bands they
    did not go grunge...

You know, there used to be a time when I'd look forward
to Bafu and Mike Bahr posts. They were the saving
grace of the jam. But now it appears that those days are
gone. As evidenced by Mike's latest post, a defensive and
unclassy one at that, the jam just isn't what it used to be.
I'm now averaging 1 quality piece of info per 5 jams.

    Sometimes I wonder why I haven't unsubscribed....

+++This isn't a flame. Anyone who knows me (D-Man) will attest to
the fact that I'm probably one of the biggest Poison fans you'll ever
meet. In fact, I'm wearing my Poison baseball cap right now as I type
this and probably will be wearing it when you all read this. Some people
wanting an 80s comeback are really desperate for their childhood. Those
people are pathetic. However, most people into that style of music,
myself obviously included, aren't longing for it for memory's sake. We
wish it would come back because, plain and simple, it was, is, and will
continue to be great music. Not necessarily the most complicated, or even
the most original, but great. I don't want to start a whole "what defines
great music" argument because that is just an excerise in futility. And
as for your comment concerning your doubt that you could get into a new
Poison album like you used to, maybe that's true. Some people's musical
tastes have moved on. That's fine. It's okay to change. But let me just
say this: I managed to get a hold of a copy of Poison's unreleased album
"Crack A Smile" (with Blues Saraceno on guitar) and it is, hands down,
one of the best hard rock albums I've ever heard. Warrant's new album
"Belly To Belly Vol 1" rocks too. As long as bands put out quality product,
they will have my money, regardless of which decade they're "from." Good
    music is good music. Period.

P.S. Ironically, I, one of the biggest fans of the genre I know, missed
the It Came From The 80s special. I'm thinking about getting cable just
on the off chance that MTV will continue to air it.

OK. Let me see if I have got this right. Yes, it's Damon, the blind guy, with
a post for the first time in ... too long, apparently. Now, I know I usually
don't have any worthy commentary to contribute to the Jam, but I want to pose
a hypothesis for scientific study. Has anybody noticed that when any
stressful event comes our way, the quality of the Jam deteriorates. Midterms?
Finals? Watch the quality of the Jam dissipate. We are in the midterm phase
right now, aren't we? Let's see if after midterms, the jam picks up and
    everybody becomes happy again.

As I was listening to the radio this mourning as I do everyday, I heard
the intro to King's X's "Sometimes" playing. I though this is great, 20
million people are hearing this. Now you are thinking what kind of show
has an audience that big? Well Rush Limbaugh of course, he uses songs an
an interlude after a commercial break. I've had thoughts of calling him
and telling him to use some DT cause DT is perfect for his show. DT is
    thinking mans music and complex.

No I didn't know that you had to step in here. First of all I didn't say
that it was BETTER than DRAMA, I just said it was there best since DRAMA.
Second of all I think you are in a vast majority of people who think DRAMA
is the greastest work ever put out but YES. And third of all this reuion
was not put together to make money, this was planned 20 years ago. Yes
make a document up and all signed it that said where ever they where 20
years from then (1996) they would get together and bring YES into the 21st
century, no bull shit. So they are working out a five record deal with
Atlantic that will bring this all to froution, and before that happens
there will be one more SLO album, . And this is that last time I defend
YES because they really don't need it, and because they are without a
doubt some of the most inspiring musicans (don't ask me ask everyone else)
in the world. And as alway NO FLAMES.

    Hey you guys!
It's been a while since I've last emailed the jam, but I have news that
    everybody has to hear!

Before I start, I have to warn you that I don't want this thing to be
posted all around the globe. And this is still an unconfirmed report, so
PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE, DON'T SPREAD THE WORD!

I'm a student at The Trebas Institute of Music in Montreal, and I'm taking
a course in sound engineering. In my recording theory class, my teacher
(who will remain anonymous) is not only a teacher, but also a recording
assistant at Le Studio, in Morin Heights, Quebec (where Rush and
Queensryche have previously recorded). He was at the studio yesterday, and
he came back with the greatest of news!
Apparently, Dream Theater management has booked some time for January at
Le Studio! Which means that by all means this is not confirmed, but should
be within the next few days. My teacher even offered me to come down and
meet them during the session (ha ha, looooseeers!)

I will try to keep you appraised as the situation develops, but for now,
this is UNCONFIRMED. Please DO NOT send email at my address for more info,
questions or whatever. Anyways, I don't read personals, so I'm just going
    to erase them.
            Dream Theater RULES!!!!!
