    >I'd say the Black Album is probably the best Metallica, save "Ride The
    >Lightning." The new record, though, is pretty damn awesome, itself.

i guess we don't wanna go thru this "carslberg, probably the best
beer in the world" thing. :-)

however, i've listened to the 1991 album and this new one and,
certainly, all of the preceding ones. this new one is quite boring
and simplistic. the guys are probably writing this music because they
feel they have to. thrill without a motive. they're calming down and
all those double guitar attacks don't sound sincere anymore. they
sound like "uh, it's been five years and countin'... let's do
somethin'". the only parts that i almost liked were the quieter parts
that do sound more "right there" than the 4/4 blues wailing and lars'
expressionless duracell-rabbit drumming. i'd give my vote for "...and
justice for all" 5 days a week.

to add a bit of topic here... just a question. it's very good to
convert people to dream theater, granted. but do any of you feel...
ashamed because of somebody in particular listening to dt? (i mean,
the punk next door, stinks, constantly drunk, with an iq smaller than
his shoe number, last week killed a dog with a baseball bat, majorly
    into dream theater).

just a question, see what comes outta it.

Scott: when I got hold of "Carved In stone", it took me a while before
getting really into it. For me that's a sign of a good lasting band (like
QR, DT, FW), whether they sound QR or not. And in fact, SG is nothing near
QR style-wise. So I don't know where you fetched that.

Sure! I would appreciate that very much. The jam doesn't need useless
    clutter...

Seriously though, I dont think I am the only one who thinks that your
post was way off base. Like one other jammer said, how can you even come
to a conclusion about SG if you dont even own 1 friggin SG album? Putting
out such an uncalled harsh statement without even really listening to a
SG album reduces your credibility greatly.

BTW Childness name calling is not needed on the jam...

    good day, eh...

well, i think that's pretty spiteful to boycott a new RUSH album most
of us have been waiting for on pins and needles since last Sept.
remember what your mother used to say? "why not cut off your nose to
spite your face". that's what it's like.

let's see, all of us like Dream Theater, that's why we're here. i'd
have say that most of us like RUSH. Dream Theater like and were
influenced by RUSH. RUSH likes, or at least respects, Dream Theater as
well as most of the other musicians on the tribute. i don't think the
tribute protest is a personal thing against any of the musicians who
play on the tribute. remember, i don't think we ever heard an
"official" statement from the RUSH camp, whether it was the band
themselves, the management or the record company as to the reason of
the protest. if anyone has, please let me know. the point is, it
could've been ANY group of musicians on the tribute album and RUSH
still would've protested it. a lot of you folks are taking the
protest way too personally. do you think the members of DT are taking
it that personally? i bet they get the new RUSH album, being fans
    themselves.

one last question to those boycotting TfE: would you be boycotting
the new RUSH album, Test for Echo, if members of Dream Theater did NOT
    participate in the tribute album??

    i submit you wouldn't.

    well, later.

wondering about something. Are they usually that "heavy" in concert (for
you oldies, who've perhaps been to earlier tours)?

I saw JT in 1979 (Bursting Out Tour/album, 2nd row, center). I'm not sure
what you expected, but they've always been good. They've never been a purely

progressive band, and in fact started out as more of a blues-oriented band.
Martin Barre is an often overlooked, but very good guitarist. It's hard to
say that JT isn't Ian Anderson's alter ego, but Martin Barre has been with
the band since the second album.

I've never seen ELP live, but I've seen quite a bit of concert footage (If
you can ever get a copy of their show at CAL JAM1 back in 197?, it shows a
band ahead of its time; Black Sabbath (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, w/ a young
Ozzy) also was a fav., Tony Iommi is another overlooked guitarist. ELP can
put on quite a show. KE is one of the best at the Hammond; many of you
younger folk appear to have missed out on the fantastic work of
drummer/percussionist Carl Palmer. And Greg Lake was part of the original
incarnation of King Crimson, a band that was truly ahead and skewed to the
times. ELP has always had a mix of heavy and light, albeit that the heavy is

supplied by the keys instead of a lead guitar. FYI, there was some interest
when ELP formed to included a guitarist as well: either Jimi Hendrix or
Steve Howe were mentioned, but the clash of egos would probably have been
too great, and the idea never gelled.

As you might guess, I'm one of the older Y'Jammers, and I grew up with ELP,
Yes, JT, Floyd, Rush, Deep Purple, etc. That's why I might appreciate some
of the DT covers on ACOS more than others (I remember some gripes about them

when ACOS came out). -White Liliy Rock

Hey, guys! I got a few things to say...

    1) I went to Tower records yesterday, and Working Man was at a listening station!
Can you believe that?! Anyone ever see DT at a listening station? Needless to say,
Tower had several copies of WM.

    2) While at Tower I also noticed that the new Eric Johnson disc has some nifty
    artwork. Anyone get it? Reviews?

    3) Also at Tower, (I really dig that place -- lots of cute females), I noticed that
James Murphy, that long-ass-haired guitar player featured on WM (I think he was or
still is a member of Testament...), has a solo album out on Shrapnel records. I being
a big dummy, bought THIS one. I didn't buy the Eric Johnson disc that has been
anxiously awaited by the entire guitar enthusiast world for the past six years, I
bought the James Murphy disc that I knew nothing about. And you know what? It SUCKS!
Figures. If you don't believe me, pick it up! (Here, try some of this milk; it's
horrible...) Deen Castronovo did the drums for it, though, and all of the highlights
    are pretty much his.

    4) The new DT songs and their approximate lengths:

    Raise the Knife (11:15)
    Where are you Now (7:15)
    Take Away my Pain (6:35)
    You or Me (5:55)
    Anna Lee (6:35)
    Burning my Soul (9:00)
The Way it Used to Be (8:00)
    Lines in the Sand (13:40)
    Just Let me Breathe (5:15)

Now, going by my trusty TI-81's addition capabilities, those tunes pretty much
fill a CD. So where's Metropolis Part Two gonna go? And what tune is gonna get left
    off the cassette? ;)

    5) I thought Brandon's post about DT being agaist the DT trigute thing was
    hysterical.

Well, I guess that's about it for now. Back to listening to my new, shitty
CD. I'm gonna get my $15.99's worth even if it kills me, damnit! :)

That's not completely true, Dave. While no one been quite as agressuve in their opinion, there have been people that haven't exactly given SG glowing reviews. To each his own.

The reason I got so hot over it was Pat slammed one of the bands I really like, and since he mentioned Shadow Gallery, I decided to let him see what it's like to get it thrown back at him. I don't hate SG, I just think they need to get their own sound, which will probably happen over time.

ABSOLUTELY! To me this has NOTHING to do with DT whatsoever, this is about RUSH and how they are trying to keep this disc from being released. It's not who played on the cd at all. I think instead of boycotting the cd, go to used cd stores that sell their promo cd's that come in and get it that way, then you stil get the album but Rush (and Atlantic/Anthem) don't receive any money for it. Rush is not going to go bankrupt over this, but the only way to get their attention is in the pocketbook.
