I stopped by Best Buy today and noticed I was a bit off on the price
for LATM that I mentioned earlier. It's $15.99, not $16.99. Only $1
off, but heck, it's $1 cheaper than I thought. That's a good cup of
coffee there. I still didn't pick it up, yet, however, because I was
getting my tapes for the prog. tape swap (didn't have the cash for
both. Guess I could've used my BB credit card). Which leads me to
mention...if you haven't signed up for the swap yet, and want to hear
some new bands, do so now. I wasn't in on the last one, but I haven't
heard anything bad about it yet, and it seems like it's going to be a
really good thing for those of us wanting to expand their prog.
listening. Cheers.

If I were participating in the protest (which I don't have the will power to do :) I would participate no matter who was involved in the tribute. The fact is that Rush has dicked over some of their most devoted and most talented fans - the performers on the tribute.
Hey, Rush will be on Rockline on Monday, September 23rd. Try to call in and ask them about the tribute!!!

BTW, I liked his work on Testament's "Low." Pretty tasty stuff I thought. Sort of Pantera with melody. :)

Hello all, sorry this is late, but my mail server's been down. :( FXN stands for "Florida Xcuse Net." Anyways, on with the review of the clinic:
I arrive at around 5:30, and there is already a huge mob of people there. And almost everyone there was saying to each other, "Oh my God! I thought I was the only one!!!" The clinic was supposed to start at 6:30, but we were all standing outside looking in, watching Mike P, Sean Malone, Sean Reinert, and the store's manager (on guitar) warming up until around 6:45... Then they finally open the door at around 7pm...
While we're waiting outside, many members of Mike's family arrive. It turns out that he's got a lot of family down here. (which is no surprise... he's from Long Island. ;) He and Marlene were visiting them for the Labor Day weekend.
I think this is pretty standard stuff here... He started with a little solo, played a little bit from "6:00." Then he introduced himself, fielded a few questions and he played the new song, "Lines In the Sand," playing along to a DAT tape, sans vocals. 14 minutes of pure melodic, harmonic and rhythmic bliss, IMHO. :)
He proceeded with his approach to playing in odd-times and used the middle section of Metropolis to apply the concepts of odd-times and polyrhythms to a "real world" setting.
After fielding a few questions (almost all of which we know the answer to because we're Ytsejammers and we're fucking psycho about the band and we've all read the FAQ about a billion times) he played another new song, "You Or Me." It's a lot more "straight-forward." They went from _2112_ to _Counterparts_ in the span of 1 album. ;) My first impression wasn't the greatest. Then again, I didn't like Awake a whole lot when I first got it, now I love it. James kinda sounded like Billy Corgan on the track and the vocal harmonies were reminiscent of Alice In Chains. (not that I'm putting either of them down but it sounded wierd, perhaps due to the not-so-great job the sound man was doing...) And I will dare to say that it sounded rather "mainstream."
He then fielded a few more questions. "Metropolis Part II" IS written, but as we all know, they have about 2 hours of material - Mike doesn't know if it will "make the cut." One thing Mike wants (other than a double-album) is to have a balance of songs on each album - the heavy, lighter songs, short, long straight-ahead ,and progressive. It's as difficult for the band as it is disappointing for us that a double album is probably not going to happen. We want to hear all their material, but the band will most likely have to give in to the powers that be, and we'll miss out on an hour and 15 minutes of music due to the time limitations of a single CD. :(
After fielding the last question, Sean Reinert and Sean Malone of the now-defunct Cynic (bass and percussion) and the store manager (gutiar) joined in for a jam session. The manager listens to too much Hendrix for my tastes... Otherwise, both Seans and Mike were stellar. However, it was interesting to hear their take on Hendrix's "Little Wing" which evolved into a free-form thing, with even a few measures of some Yes song, the name of which escapes my memory.
Then he ended with the obligatory DAT jam-along to "Erotomania."
Afterwards, I ran into Marlene Portnoy. We chatted briefly and she had some bad news - Meanstreak broke up. :( She saw the "Majesty" logo tattoo on my arm and she told Mike to look out for me and told me to make sure Mike would see it. :) When Mike finished we were forced to stand around with nothing to do, Mike came out and signed autographs and answer some quick questions. He saw my tattoo and I got a photo of him and me, standing together showing off our similar tattoos. :) We chatted about the Birch Hill show (which was his favorite of the 4), about Ethyl Mertz and how much I hate all you lucky motherfuckers that were there ;) and he signed my _Working Man_ CD.
One thing I forgot to ask (and I'm sorry!) is if he's doing any more clinics in the near future and when/where. :(
Even though I don't play a whole lot of drums, I still came away with valuable information. You can still apply the rhythmic concepts to whatever instrument you play, AND you get to see your favorite drummer in the entire world who just happens to play for your favorite band in the entire world. :) Hell, even if you aren't a musician, you'll still enjoy a Mike Portnoy clinic!
Damn. He sure looked wierd with his head shaved. ;)

Hey Guys and Girls!
Major new talent alert : Superior
Thanx to my new friend MAPE(HEY MAN!) I've discovered this Top band.Never have I been blown away so much by a band since the great DT. If you like good music (and I think you lot all do!) then search for this band you will NOT be dissapointed.( I havent played any DT today because of them).
To the guy who didn't like "Are you being Served" I can understand that. British comedy is definenetly different from others(which I think makes it the best). Loads of Double Entendres etc USA comedy seems to be more direct more offensive- putting people down which is probably why I dont like a lot of it except for the most excellent Sergeant Bilko!
God! if you think the Smurfs are bad some of the novelty shitty records we get in the UK charts give the Smurfs musical integrity! Believe me.
On the point of Shadow Gallery - everyone's entitled to his/her opinion but I can't believe someone compared to QR! To me they sound nothing like them.
Did many of you see a guy on the Alt.music.Dream-Theater bulletin board saying he'd been to a MP drum clinic and was going to download some music bits of You or Me and Lines in the Sand he'd recorded. I suggest a major e-mail blitz!

Not DT related, but I thought I'd through this out anyway. I bought the Cairo CD because of recommendations on the Jam, and I personally don't like it. Too keyboardish/synthy IMHO. If someone else also bought something because of a recommendation on the Jam, and didn't like it, and would like to trade for the Cairo CD, please email me. I'm specifically looking for Ivanhoe, Shadow Gallery's first album (yeah, right *grin*), Altura, Lemur Voice, Tempest, Magellan's first album (Hour of Restoration), or even Working Man (I can't find it locally, and am too cheap to order it *grin*). If anyone has anything to trade, just mail me the CD descritption, what it's like, and we'll work out the trade. (note that the above are just preferences -- if you have something else of interest that you don't like, let me know as well) Thanks! Chris

So my first day back on the jam and I see everyone's still debating on Load. Well, I've had 3 long months to listen to it and I can say that It is a pretty good album musically. The album seems kinda simple, but the guitar tab book is pretty fat. I think the black album is better than Load musically, but I think that The best Metallica album has to ne Justice. Justice, IMHO, was the peak of their career. The albums got better and better as they reached Justice, and now they are getting worse. Nothing against Load or the black album, I love em both, but they don't have the crunch, the melody, and the lyrical insight as Justice. (BTW, I have been listening to the lyrics of songs more closely since my girlfriend broke up with me last week :( [sympathy appreiciated])

Ok, what band did I slam of yours? The only band I remember slamming was Green Day. That was because of your original post that SG is a shitty QR. If it wasn't green day that you were referring to then I would like to know what band I slammed and what I said. Give it a rest though...
About the discrepancies between prices for LATM, the reason is that the Japanese version with Another Day is more expensive than the European version with Surrounded....
