    Just picked up Altura, Cairo, Lemur Voice and The Bobs (Too many Santas) --
    all four are way cool. :)

    Yeah, Cairo has lots of keys, good for them! The world needs more
    keyboard-oriented bands.

            +-------------------------------------------------------+

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Well, the time to order your Ytsejam T-shirts is now. The order was
    placed over Labor Day weekend, printing will be begin shortly, and the
    shirts will make their first appearance at YtseCon III on October 12th.

    =======
    Details
    =======

    The Ytsejam shirts are two sided prints. The front of the shirt features
    a *full color* raytraced graphic from Chris Haley in Washington. The
    graphic is a beautifully done scene with the Majesty logo floating behind
    a group of marble columns on a tile floor with a wide view of space
    visible behind.

    The back of the shirt will be done in a solid blue color. The majority
    of the design is a huge Majesty logo, framed by the Dream Theater title
    at the top, the mailing list address on the sides and "Ytsejam" at the
    bottom. Below that is "Internet Mailing List" between two more Majesty
    logos.

    At this point the order stands at 150 shirts, but I'm considering
    increasing to 200, and possibly a later second run if demand is high
    enough.

    You can check out all of the details, as well as a preview of the shirts
    at:
    http://www.phlab.missouri.edu/~c675311/ytsejam/

    ** Please note: Due to some legal issues, the University will no longer
    ** allow me to keep this commercial advertisement on their server. To
    ** sidestep this issue, Chris Merlo was kind enough to put the page up on
    ** his account. Please go to the URL above and follow the link to the new
    ** site.

    =======
    Pricing
    =======

    The cost of the shirts is $16 each. The shirt is damn close to concert
    quality, so $16 is a steal (last Dream Theater concert I was at charged
    $23 for a shirt!). If you require a size larger than XL, please let me
    know ASAP so I can get those orders in. There is an additional $1 charge
    for each size increase (ie. XXL = $17). If you are picking the shirt up
    from me directly or will be at YtseCon III, the $16 price stands. If you
    won't be at the Con and can't get the shirt in person, you can order one
    through the mail for $20 to cover shipping.

    ** I spoke with the people at the post office and I've decided to set the
    ** shipping prices outside the USA at $9, for a total of $25. I realize
    ** this is damn expensive for a tshirt, and I'm sorry. If individual prices
    ** are signifigantly less expensive, I will gladly return a check for the
    ** balance.

    The rundown:
    Pickup or Con: $16
    Mail Order: $20
    Outside the USA: $25
    XXL +$1
    XXXL +$2

    ========
    Ordering
    ========

    The shirts are open to pre-ordering now. You can reserve one by check or
    money order to ensure that you will get one. I definitely recommend
    this. By ordering early, you can make sure you get a shirt, as well as
    ensure that the whole project goes of without a hitch. Checks and money
    orders will be held until the weekend before the Con (Oct. 4th) at which
    point they will be cashed to cover the rest of the payment when I pick up
    the shirts. Those of you at the Con will receive your shirts then. Mail
    orders will begin shipping the week after the Con, most likely on that
    Wednesday (Oct. 16th).

    To order, send a check or money order for the proper amount (see pricing
    above) to:

    Pat Griffin
    573A Hudson Hall
    1202 E. Rollins St.
    Columbia, MO 65201

    Make them payable to Pat Griffin, and remember this in US dollars.

    Be sure to include:
            Your name.
            Email address.
            Mailing address.
            Phone number.
            Quantity of shirts you want to order.
            The size of each.
            Whether or not you will be at YtseCon III.

    I will keep you up to date on the status of the shirts through email.

    I'm not really familiar with Megadeath, so could you please explain this link (no matter how tenuous) between Marty and the new EJ disc? Don't know how you've determined that EJ's gotten old, either. So the disc is a little more laid back than _Ah Via_ or _Tones_. Oh yeah, there was poetic shit strung all through the liner notes on the first two albums, too. Pretty silly I agree, but hey.

    Jim, you raise great points about Mike's projects, but let's consider this. DT doesn't get the kind of exposure that Live or Van Halen get. Unfortunately, DT is not as big as these two superBands. So, why would somebody want to surpress Mike's production of DT bootleg CDs or imports or limitted edition CDs, whatever they are called. Now, you may say that Rush is just as big as VH or Live, maybe bigger, but maybe they don't know or care about Mike Bahr's projects, although I would think they are ignorant to his doings. Hey, Mike, I support you, even though I have no money for anything right now. Keep up the good work and watch yourself.

    Does anyone else get a kick out of what James does during the instrumental sections? Anyway, I managed to get a true live sound out of my system with LIT. Digital Signal Processing is amazing! I cranked the bass and lo and behold, I could hear Myung's bass playing! I used to wonder what he was playing most of the time. I'm impressed with his abilities. He's much better than I originally thought. Is the bass he plays in the video his Tung? And does anyone know anything about this brand of bass? I like what I hear of the sound, but I've never heard of the brand.

    I have the first disk _Vemod_ and it is dark and heavy and uses the mellotron. It has a lot of atonal riffs which can get hard to get used to, but overall I like a couple of songs on it. Vocals sung in english.

    > > Anglagard - Another Swedish band, lots of long instrumental passages and > Mellotron use, some symphonic parts augmented by heavy guitar > and Swedish lyrics.

    Awesome band. I have _Epilog_ and it is a little hard to get into because there are a lot of quite passages it it, but when it starts to get heavy it rocks. It has many instruments: flute, mellotron, cello, bass, guitar, drums. The music is very dark and atmospheric and on the heavy parts it get very complex which is great. Excellent production...I highly reccomend it. Most prog fans will tell you to get their first _Hybris_. I heard that it is easier to get into.

    Saw them at ProgDay '96 (great show) but I didn't get to see them up front. Their music is good, and I can't describe them because I wasn't really paying attention at the show. But several people told me that the newest release is great.

An intense live experience here, I > recommend the second album, Brainstorm for chops, the third > album Tragic Symphony for more mature songwriting.

    Highly reccomended. I have the first and the third. _Tragic Symphony_ is a great album. Above description is suffice.

    > > Altura - Another prog-metal Magna Carta band, I heard it in a music > store, fairly impressive, sounded a lot like older Rush.

    Good production..but the songs don't have great replay value to them. But I haven't listened to it in a while. The songwriting is choppy...has lot of changes..but the musicianship is great up to par with DT but they don't develop their melodies very well. Singer sings in mid range. I recommend it for DT/Rush fans.

    > Finneus Gauge - New band featuring Chris Busby from echolyn on keyboards, > I heard a few demos at Progscape and they are going to kick some > serious ass. Their first live performance is the night of > Ytsecon III, and will probably keep me from going to the con, I > want to see them that bad.

    Aww...I would love to see them.

    Some other bands:

    Deus Ex Machina _Diacronie Metronomiche_

    This band is Italian and the lead singer sing in Latin. Singer is one of the best I ever heard. His range is incredible and does a lot of cool effects with it. They played in ProgDay '96 and the sound was great and one of the best concert experiences I had. Their music is strange, complex elaborate noise. Some of the songs start jazzy and then get heavier with lots of abrupt changes. They are definiately avant-garde. I highly recommend that you get the above album. It is a live album and the sonics are studio quality. They have a violinist in the band and he hits some really sweet notes. Top notch musicians.

    East _Hu"se'g_

    Hugarian neo-progressive band. The vocalist sings very softly but his diction is great. The melodies are fairly simple but the songs segue so perfectly. The song have a lot of texture and nice melodies. I bought off Chris Lamka (Of Sound Mind) and it had a "must-have" label on it and it is one of the best purchaces I bought this year. It doesn't sound like any band I know.

    Walter.
