Hi all
I've just had a great idea: instead of writing about Dream Theater (or related
bands) and passing on good music tips to each other, let's just start knocking
Queenryche and saying what a load of crap they are (Geoff Tate's voice is like
goose farts on a foggy morning, bet they couldn't play a Dream Theater song,
the drummer's so crap they make him sit in a plastic box on stage etc.). Oh
shit, you're already doing this - oh well, back to the drawing board.
Don't compare them, just enjoy them for what they are - two great bands that
play great but distinctly different music. It's like trying to compare your
favourite soccer team with your favourite formula 1 racing driver: you will
end up alienating a lot of people who like one or the other or both, and as
an added bonus, you will end up making an arsehole of yourself. 'Nuff said.
Thanks to all those who replied to my request about Lemur Voice: lots of
helpful people out there in cyberland.
And now to my next question: does anybody have the address of the Type O
Negative mailing list? Please reply to me personally.
Any news about a new album by Moist? (check them out if you don't know them)
stay safe and happy listening

It's the same reason why Guitar World does a "Never before seen/heard Jimi

People eat that stuff up!!! I've threatened to cancel my 10-year subscription

Just wanted to put in a quick plug for the new Tool album, AEnima. It
comes out on vinyl Tuesday the 17th and on CD on October 1st. If you've
heard any Tool before, you know how thick their music is and from what
I've heard of the new stuff, it's going to be more palatable this time.
Don't get me wrong, I love Undertow, but AEnima will be a big album for
them. Check 'em out!

Actually, I have seen them; they played a very very small venue here a
couple of novembers ago. There was a frickin pole right in the centre of
the stage, Mike had to work his drum set around it. When they finished he
gave the pole the finger, and personally I think he should have urinated on it.
This, and LatM, are where I have seen him perform. While I'd love them to
come back to OKC, there was such small response (300 people?) that I suppose
the nearest they'll come is to Dallas. But James is about my size, PLUS I
can sing like that. Nobody is going to stomp my ass! However, I would
prefer to sing WITH him, not in a contest or whatever, and I'd certainly not
like to get in a fight with him. I might jump him, though. He's cute. =)
Check out Robert Plant's videos for his album _Now and Zen_ and you'll see
what I mean, but he was doing that even with Led Zeppelin. Some people just
never watch themselves in a mirror.

..and posting, anyhow.
Friday was a good one for me. At lunch, I wandered down to the Embarcadero
(in San Francisco, where I work) and caught a free concert from the SF
Symphony. That night, I made my way down to The Edge in Palo Alto for a
VERY impressive King's X show. After seeing them at the John Anson Ford
Theater in LA a couple of years ago, a (smaller) venue like The Edge was
quite nice.
I'm also reveling in the glory of "Test For Echo." It's an awfully strong
effort from a band that's been at it a long time. It's a really
contemporary sounding album, like "Counterparts" was, but the writing's a
little different. "Resist" is just blowing me away at the moment. The
other ten tracks, in some preferential order, subject to revision: "Test For
Echo," "Driven," "Totem," "Time And Motion," "Limbo," "Virtuality," "Carve
Away The Stone," "Half The World," "Dog Years," "Color Of Right." It's a
great album, though....I'm recommending it highly.

I vaguely understand the Marty Friedman comment -- it's more Eastern
sounding than his other two records. I'm not sure it's more laid back
yet...he really takes it out on "SRV" and "Camel's Night Out." All in all,
an excellent album...one of the three of four best records released this
year. Right now, I'd probably say I like it more than "Tones," less than
"Ah Via Musicom," which is a masterpiece. I even like the liner notes.

About Yes...
Like Damon said, get "Close To The Edge" first ! I would never suggest
buying "Tales From Topographic Oceans" as a first purchase... This one
is just too "weird" to get into, especially the second half. I wouldn't
suggest buying "Relayer" either, although it's one of my favourites
(Gates Of Delirium!!!). Personally, I think "Going For The One" would
be a good album to start with, too. That's also a favourite of mine...
(Awaken!!!)
"90125" and "Big Generator" are great if you're more interested in
progressive pop-music. Like Damon said, definately get "90125" first.
Also, I'd suggest getting "ABWH" by Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe,
who are/were all "Yes"-members at one time or another... This one also
has KC's Tony Levin on bass and Francis Dunnery on backing vocals
(ex-It Bites, ex-Robert Plant). IMO, This album sounds more like "Yes"
than all the other 80's "Yes"-albums...
And then there's "Union"... This album consists of 11 songs by
"Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe", and 4 songs by the "90125"-Yes...
I was lucky to see them in concert during that tour (Around the World
in 80 Dates). Just imagine 2 drummers, 2 guitarists, 2 keyboardists,
a bassplayer and a vocalist on a revolving platform !!! And front row
seats too !!! I have very mixed feelings about this album, though,
seeing as those guys were fighting in court over the name "Yes", just
a few years earlier... Still a cool album. Their last album "Talk"
is ok, but certainly not one of my favourites.
So, I'd suggest getting :
* Close To The Edge
* Going For The One
* 90125
* Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe
* Union
And all the other stuff after that, of course ;-)
Oh yeah, SaVeur is right... No more DT vs QR please...
Personally, I've never understood why people keep comparing them...
IMO, they're *both* great bands, with each their own sound...

Ytsejam people,
Again the QR vs DT debate has surfaced its ugly little head. This
is like arguing over 'less filling' 'tastes great' thing. As a
majority, we like them both. But since we're on this list we prefer
DT and those on mindcrime prefer QR. It was best said that DT is for
technicality and QR is for the sake of the song. This is where it
should be left.
Another wants to compare Promised Land vs Awake. Can't happen.
They are in two different dirctions. However, I thing PL itself is in
2 different dirctions. Personally, I think PL is the weakest QR disk.
I have tried to get into it for a year now and can't. To me it's a
poor extension of Empire. That doesn't mean I think they suck, it
just means I have a problem with the disk where others don't.
Anyway, the point is there should be no arguments over two bands
that are different and very good in their own ways. And lets not
start this thread again, although I think it's too late.

store where I lived (called Stick It In Your Ear heh...) and T-Ride was on
it... "Backdoor Romeo" and umm.. "Zombie's From Hell." I fell in love with
the, but never heard any other songs (though they did do an interview on the
now sadly defunct Headbanger's Ball late one night...) Anyway, I finally
found their CD just before I moved out here to LA... in a used CD bin at
Sound Warehouse... I listen to it a LOT... mostly because, DT aside, I HATE
99% of the music that's out right now... (It Came From the 80s II : Metal
Goes Pop was almost enough to make me cry!)
Anyway, the story was that these three guys had "carreers" doing various stuff
and played in this band in the evenings just for the heck of it. One night
their neighbor came over and suggested that they make a record and ended up
financing it. The did the tour, etc., and disappeared. :( My guess is that
they went back to their old jobs in the wake of the grunge/alternative
takeover of the music business. But...
It came in the 80s, it left with the 90s, and it'll frikkin' be back in
2000!!! :)

Totally true..you cant compare two difrent bands.. but even thou DT is
really technically oriented..they write really good songs.. songs that
can easily stand aside some qr's songs.. they write beautifl melodiuos
songs..inteligent and thoughtfull lyrics.. epic-like stories etc ..AND
they can really play well...theyre still 2 great bands.. and while qr is
more song oriented ..dt can write songs just as good.. its like JOhn
P,he can shred but he can also write really good songs and lyrics..

First, I listened to Working Man and was pretty impressed with the disk.
Bravo to Magna Carta. I liked La Villa, Closer To The Heart, Natural Science,
YYZ, Freewill, and Red Barchetta the best. I feel that Devon did a pretty
good job. Is he in a band? (sorry if I sound ignorant). I liked James'
performance on RB a lot better than on By-Tor.
Next, I'm making a compilation video from some of the bands at Woodstock 94.
Could anyone give me a setlist from The Chili Peppers, Primus, and Porno For
Pyros I know most of the songs from RHCP and Primus, but I'm missing a
couple, and I really don't know any Pornos songs except Pets.
