plus, and the reason he isnt as popular, and the reason i will probably
never buy one of his cds, is because its been done. if he came out 6 or 7
years later then its a long gone thing by then... if you want a chance grab
the reins while they're hot.

well, they are. you may hate them, you may DESPISE them, you may want to go
PISS ON COBAIN'S GRAVE. but they were innovaters. they werent talented,
but that has nothing to do with being innovative. thats like saying SP is
better than DT because they make more money and more airplay. by the turn
of the 90s the 80s scene had just been overdone, and guys who hit it in the
early 90s like nirvana and pearl jam were truly innovating the whole new
wave. at that point i would much rather listen to nirvana than another
yngwie clone. sure, joe's talented, he can make his on fame in that
respect, but to be looked upon as a legend you cant go trying to do
something someone else came up with better, or at the same intensity, years
ago. i think pretty soon the 90s will come to a point of being overdone,
alternative will die out, and a new form, hopefully more a la 80s :), will
take the streets and the airwaves. patience :)

I agree that Rage and 311 are 2 very great bands that are out there
today. Tom Morello, I think is one of the most exciting guitarists to
hit the scene in a long time. Also take a listen to 311 earlier albums.
I recommend "grass roots". It has a wider mix of ska, jazz, rap, and
metal.

I really like Fire Garden.
It sounds like Steve had a lot of fun playing with his Weeny when he was
younger, and I think I'd like to try it out. What exactly is a Weeny,
and how much do they cost?

There is a lot of talk that shred guitar is still dead and that it
won't be back but I believe that it is only a matter of time. When I got
the new Steve Vai cd I heard a different kind of "shred". There was plenty
of great melody and harmony but when the time come for a song to explode Vai
never hesitates. It is refreshing to know that there are still players out
there who can play and write as well as perform. It is only a matter of
time before the trends in music change again but it is nice to know that
true musicians are still involved in rock music and are making a vaiable
contribution to music history. Now all we have to do is hold our breath
while awaiting the next DT masterpiece that will totally floor us....

Well, after hitting redial for an hour, I finally have Rush tix to the
St. Louis show on the 31st! I know Dale Newberry is going, anyone else
going to make it to the show? I've been a Rush fan for about 5 years,
but never got a chance to go to one of their shows before. Someone on
here said that this is supposed to be their biggest production yet! I
can't wait. I'll be wearing my Ytsejam shirt, so if you see a tall
redhead with a Ytsejam shirt, say hi! Later..

Anyone else have an idea where I might find a sound clip of Lemur Voice?
Anyone? Marcel? Anyone?

Have any of you heard of a band called The Black Peppertones? My landlord
brought by a CD of theirs called Tumbling Ground last night... it's pretty
good. I think they are SUPPOSED to be a Christian Country band, but they
sound VERY Michael Hedges-esque to me. Of course, the songs all have vocals,
but the similarity is there. Another act you could draw a line to is Counting
Crows... only less pop oriented. Definately interesting...
And while I'm taking up bandwidth...
Rush: Test for Echo
I HATED this the first couple of listens through. Now I like it. It is NOT
Moving Pictures... it's not even close, but it's a very good album. Not
flashy, just, well, pop. :)
Steve Vai: Fire Garden
Ok... I'm gonna get on my soapbox -- be warned!! (putting on CD for
reference).
1. There's a Fire in the House: typical Steve Vai rocker
2. The Crying Machine: This is NICE! Kinda of a little jazz-rock number.
This reminds me of something you'd heard in a HIP lobby. :)
3. Dyin' Day: can we say Vai's take on Eric Johnson? With a bit of southern
rock groove... but in ballad format. He used his single coil a LOT on this
tune... but it's still the Jem.
4. Whookam: a waste of space. In case you were wondering, this was recording
for S&R but didn't make the disc.
5. Blowfish: is this Steve's version of industrial?? Like, industrial guitar
meets Robert Palmer in the late 80s? :) Anyone remember the song "Addicted
to Love"?...
6. The Mysterious Murder of Christian Tiera's Lover: This reminds me of
something... something 80s... but I can't for the life of me figure out
WHAT... was there a Whitesnake song??? And the end reminds me of Alien
Water Kiss... (anyone seen the transcription for that?? It's INSANE!)
7. Hand on Heart: For the Love of God meets Touching Tongues... with cleaner
guitar tones...
8. Bangkok: OHMIGAWD does he play piano well!! He's been listening to
Yanni, btw... :)
9. Fire Graden Suite: Hmmm.... Bull Whip: who's listening to DT now? :)
Angel Food: Wow....that's a REAL piano!! Impressive miking.... (for those
who don't know, miking a piano is an engineers worst nightmare) Taurus
Bulba: 7:54-8:58.... errilly DT-easque... even the bass sound is the
same... cttoi, so is the keyboard sound....
10. Deepness: conrary to what it says, this isn't the first of Steve's voice
on the record... listen to Fire Garden Suite CAREFULLY... some of those
"keyboards" aren't keyboards... :)
11. Little Alligator: Wow... someone other than my digs Chris Duarte!!
IMHO, however, the solo in this is WAY too long... it tires out the song.
That's actually a strat, btw....
12. All About Eve: this is my fave... it sounds a LOT like some of Sax Myle's
stuff... not that Steve would know who THEY are. (MY ex-guitar teacher's
band). Lots of texture... chromatic chord progressions... with VOCALS over
them...very cool.
13. Aching Hunger: umm...Prince 1999.. :) (Yes, I was around then...)
14. Brother: this one sounds like there's a strat in there too... there are
certain sounds a Jem DOESN'T make.. :) This one is rather Ian Moore-ish..
nice.
15. Damn You: this one sounds like Chris Duarte/Ian Moore, too... methinks
little Stevie has been listening to a lot of blues lately...
16. When I was a Little Boy: Ok, this is funny... but it could have been a
nice hidden track... although it does go in a Zappa direction. :)
17. Genocide: OOOOOH!!! This was remixed at MY SCHOOL!!!! And as much as I
hate to sya it, it reminds me of NKOTB.... :)
18. Warm Regards: Julian's back!! This is just a nice little instrumental.
Just hadda share my ideas... cool CD... if you don't have it -- GO BUY IT!!
It's the best album Steve's done in a long time... 7 years, to be exact...
:)

BTW, I know not everyone on the list has been around as long as I have, but

I can't count how many times I've heard this thread about James' voice over

Well maybe it is time for my annual post about early Genesis. That is, pre-1978 Genesis. Specifically, pre- "Earth Wind and Phil" Genesis. Great stuff. Really. There was a lot of decent prog from them. Not prog metal even in a stretch. But, prog. They were somewhat weak in their guitar playing (for those who evaluate guitar playing in a prog metal sense) and heavy on the keys. They did throw a few bizarre songs in every once in a while and the lyrics are frequently way out there, but from a songwriting perspective, they had a really decent thing going. And, many of these can be found in the el cheapo bins or the used record store. Try to get Seconds Out (double live) for a sampling. Disk two is classic.
Separately, to bring my carcass out of the 70's and back into the 90's, the new Lemur Voice and I Mother Earth are every bit as decent as others have said. A notch below Superior for me, but definitely at the top of the tree.
Mark Metzger mmetzger@bostech.com
PS - Isn't it cool that MP has gotten secure enough to NOT have to do a drum solo in concert ?? I mean, as drum solos go, his were quite decent but I think that there are few out there who would rather hear a drum solo iso Metropolis. His work within the context of their music is so much more impressive. And, he has nothing to prove to anyone.

Yeah ! "It Bites" is one of my favourite bands !
> Buy their albums now ......
Are they still available ? I don't think so... There *is* a compilation album out there, but I didn't get it... Only one track I didn't have yet. Still considering buying it, though :-] It's very hard to describe their music, because none of their albums sound anything alike... I do think they were one of the few prog-bands who played prog without trying to sound 70's... True originals... What made this band so special wasn't just their (great) musicianship, but mostly the teamwork with which they played (kinda like DT and Marillion). As individual musicians they're great... as a band they're brilliant !
> 1. Big Lad in the Windmill
This is a 'Poppy Prog-Album' or 'Proggy Pop-Album' (either one) It features their first hit "All In Red" and a really cool single called "Calling All The Heroes"... I always looked at this song as their answer to Marillion's "Market Square Heroes"... They were once considered as the Marillion of the 90's (although they split up in '89). Guess who really turned out to be the Marillion of the 90's ? .... Marillion !!!!! Btw, they once played at a festival with Marillion (it's that gig from the "Live From Loreley" video).
> 2. All Around the World
Very progressive stuff ! Btw, it's "Once Around The World", not "All". If you get *that* one, make sure it's the 'full' version, with the title-track (14:46) on it (Virgin CDV2456). There's also a short version with 5 tracks, instead of 9 (I have both versions). One of those 5 songs has been cut down from 9:21 to 3:59 (can you say 'sacrilege'?) ! Btw, this is my favourite "It Bites" album... A bit Yes-like, imo. The title track is really really great ! (and kinda weird in places).
> 3. Eat me in St.Louis
"Eat Me in St. Louis" features artwork by Roger Dean (Yes/Asia) and photography by Martyn Dean. It's produced by Mack (Queen) and has more 'rough edges' than it's predecessors. Great stuff ! It also has one of the most beautiful songs of all times (imo), "The Ice Melts Into Water". I remember seeing this one MTV, back in the time when they occasionally played (good) music. MTV also played "Calling All The Heroes" a few times...
Also, a live-album was released in '91, after the band split up. It's called "Thank You And Goodnight". Get this one too, if you get the chance.
Francis Dunnery left "It Bites" to pursue a solo career... His first solo-album was "Welcome To The Wild Country" and has only been released by Virgin Japan in '91... Virgin got taken over that year (right?), and his album was never released in any other country after that... I got it on import for $ 45 ! It's a really great album, imo :-)
After that, he joined Robert Plant's band for about a year. He's on his "Fate Of Nations" album. I don't have that one. If anyone on this list has it... is it any good ? I saw them live at a festival here in Holland (Park Pop) :-) I originally went there to see Fish (ex-Marillion). :-)
Since then, Francis has released two more studio albums, "Fearless" and "Tall Blonde Helicopter" (don't have that one yet) and a mainly acoustic live-album called "One Night In Sauchiehall Street" (don't have that one either, yet).
The other guys from "It Bites" toured with John Wetton (UK/Asia/Crimson), last year or so (at least that's what I heard).
Sorry for this long, off-topic post... Just don't get me started on my favourite bands, or I'll never stop posting :-) (Yes/Marillion). Isn't it time we start an early-Genesis thread ?
Hey ! Just had a thought... I think Francis Dunnery would be a GREAT singer for Genesis ! Mike Rutherford could return to playing the instrument he plays best... bassguitar... Francis could do the vocals AND guitars (he's a great guitarist). All they need now, is a drummer... Is Bruford doing anything these days ? He replaced Phil Collins before, on drums (during one tour, right after Peter Gabriel left).

Heard of him?! I was in YOUR CLASS! Small world, huh? You probably don't remember me, and I probably don't remember you, but that was one kick ass class at Berklee. Every song on Supersonic Shred Machine is equal to or better than the best Yngwie songs, with his own little twists. I completely urge everybody to buy this cd just to get blown away. Even if you think fast stuff is boring, this guy will knock your pants off. He makes JP seem slow. I remember Bafu was talking about how the fastest he'd ever heard Yngwie play was 16 notes per second, that would be 16th notes at 240 bpm. Well I saw and (barely) heard Stump play sextuplets at 220 bpm. I'm not saying fast = good, I just think it's fun, and when mixed with good melodies and feelings, it makes a good style of music. That music is shred and Stump does it perfectly.
Oh and about the bands that nobody original is left in, how about Def Leppard? All their original guitarists and songwriters are gone, and the drummer lost an arm!
By the way, Operation: Mindcrime is cool.

Trust me, Yngwie would want to have Stump's chops. Not the other way around. What's really funny is Stump was a total jazz cat when attending Berklee. All four years he majored in it. I guess when he realized how fast he was at jazz, and at the time fast metal players were real hot, he decided to play metal. :)

I know the guy. Don't worry, he doesn't take himself seriously. He says so in his CD notes, it's just his rep and he likes to live up to it, you know? He an incredibly nice guy though, and very down to earth. He was acting all tough when we talked, I said his CD was awesome, he said thanks and was happy to sign it. Oh and don't worry, he got rid of the woman's blouses. Last time I saw him he was wearing some shirt from his record label (Leviathan) that said, "Thou Shall Not Grunge" and it had a circle with an X and it said grunge it the middle. All in good humor.
