They do have some progressive "sounding" stuff, but I wouldn't consider them

    Hi people,

Well, after reading 5 jams after getting home from work (I got home about 90 minutes before writing this, which isn't to say that I spent all that time reading them... oh, never mind) I've decided to write to you all.

By the way, for those who don't remember, I was, before unsubscribing from the list (the first time) for one month the Most Frequest Poster from Australia. I appreciate any and all hushed awe :)

I'm back, anyway (after unsubscribing for a second time - or was it third?) and thought I'd write and let you know what's been happening.

    What's been happening this year:

I saw Kiss in February, which was very cool, and a week later I saw Steve Vai.

    Kiss were brilliant...

A lot of people might already know about my Steve Vai experience, so I won't repeat it here...

Currently I'm in a Yes-Dream Theater-Bruce Dickinson mood. I actually felt something while listening to DT this week, I felt exactly as I did when I first heard some of the tracks (specifically the ones from Live at the Marquee and A Change of Seasons). And Bruce Dickinson is the greatest singer ever, whatever Tattooed Millionaire, No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark may lead you to believe...

I'm now a Yes fan, after buying many of their cds attempting to like them. Who next? I've been told that the best Marillion cd to buy first would be none of them, so what other band with heaps of albums would people suggest?

Just a note to everyone who's still endlessly flaming all and sundry:

I don't particularly care to read all your fighting and bickering in the jam, especially when it's just abuse and name-calling, so please keep it restricted to private email. I know a lot of people have asked this before, but it really pisses me off when I see that I have 5 jams to read one evening and find that a good proportion of each one is pointless bickering. Please, once again...

Now, I know this is getting fairly long (sorta) so I'll try and keep it short...

Some freaky things I found out recently:

Doug from King's X is 46! Holy mackeloney!

Well, that's the only one I can think of at the moment...

That's all. It's nice to be back on the jam - for the first couple of days there seemed to be just 2 or 3 a day, until someone either asked about who Marilyn Manson is (my bet is Pee Wee Herman) or someone wasn't all that supportive about the Ytse-asshole of the Month.

    Just one more thing:

I love the new Queensryche album. I don't think it's grungy at all, but it wouldn't bother me if it was cos I don't mind some grunge. I have every Pearl Jam album, and liked a lot of Nirvana stuff... but I know there's more to grunge than those to bands...

And it's a Soundgarden is splitting up... it'll be interesting seeing what Chris Cornell will do now. He's a great singer...

Anyway, I'm off. Nice seeing you all again.

    Bye!

    Love Spiff

Tales of their CD being in the used bin are very true...i have bought 5 copies over the years and given them away to friends because, for a 3-piece band...they really do a great job...their music is fun. I still see them around for $4-6. I live in the Bay Area and i think they were a bay area band. If you want a copy i can take a look around too.

    cheers-

on the contrary, they were driving the toilet bandwagon :) as for their music prog.. even i wouldnt call it that. they do some great stuff, but they're no more prog over "alternative" than i mother earth is. i think its crazy some of the ways people try and make things fit into the prog category here, its like its felt as if music isnt prog it must be sacrificed to the cows. (well, except mosh, in which that is the case;)

    Hey guys,

I found this blurb in the music news section on http://www.hardradio.com - sorry if it's already been posted -

    >Ex-DREAM THEATER keyboardist Kevin Moore has a new >'alternative-focused' project called CHROMA KEY. Moore is also >tapping the keys on FATES WARNING's new album, A Pleasant Shade >Of Grey - he's scheduled to play with the band live in Europe...

I have no idea what their source for this information is or how reliable it is, but I thought the European jammers would find this especially interesting. :) They also have a short mention of DT, saying their Euro tour is selling out across the board and that the new CD will probably be released late summer/early fall. (I think we've got an inside track on this info though :)

    The Computer Hillbillies ========================

Come and listen to a story 'bout a man named Jed, A poor college kid, barely kept his family fed, But the one day he was talking to a recruiter, Who said, "they pay big bucks if ya work on a computer..."

    UNIX, this is... CRTs... Workstations...

Well, the first thing ya know ol' Jed's an Engineer. The kinfolk said "Jed, move away from here". They said "Arizona is the place ya oughta be", So he bought some donuts and he moved to Ahwatukee...

Intel, that is... dry heat... no amusement parks...

On his first day at work, they stuck him in a cube. Fed him more donuts and sat him at a tube. They said "you project's late, but we know just what to do. Instead of 40 hours, we'll work you 52!"

    OT, that is... unpaid... mandatory...

The weeks rolled by and things were looking bad. Schedules started slipping and some managers were mad. They called another meeting and decided on a fix. The answer was simple... "We'll work him sixty-six!"

Tired, that is... stressed out... no social life...

Months turned to years and his hair was turning grey. Jed worked very hard while his life slipped away. Waiting to retire when he turned 64, Instead he got a call and escorted out the door.

Laid off, that is... de-briefed... unemployed...

Now the moral of the story is listen to what you're told, Companies will use you and discard you when you're old. So gather up your friends and start your own firm, Beat the competition, watch the bosses squirm.

Millionaires, that is... Bill Gates... Steve Jobs...

Y'all come back now... ya hear'

    Regards,

The old ones, the ones who made us :)

Probably old news by the time this gets to the jam, but Soundgarden have reportedly broken up.

    One word: HELLYEAH!

One more no-talent non-musician loser grunge band down, but unfortunately too many more to go. Hopefully Queensryche will be next. Hahaha! BTW, anyone who likes the new Queensryche is a dorq, and if you disagree with me you can fucking shove it up your ass and go to hell. :-)

Shall I start the Pat vs Al up again?

I think it is a good thing Skadz is the list owner because if certain other jammers were, I think every single one of us would have been booted off this list.

I dont know why Rush is playing at the Nissan Pavillion. It really sucks to get down there and out of there. I dont think I will be going...

I've had the new QR since it came out and I still like. Sure it isn't OM or RFO but it is still good.

When's the new Fates come out, Apr 22 or 29th?????

Has anyone listened to Defyance yet? I just purchased their album direct from the band and received it yesterday (it took exactly one week from the day I sent the check to get it -- impressive!:) Anyway, this CD is REALLY good. It sounds a lot like Fates Warning in a lot of parts, but is definately original as well. The only downfall is that on some of the songs, the vocalist tries to hit notes and doesn't sound too good doing it.. But overall, it's a really good album. If anyone is interested in getting it, check out: http://www.panelcomponents.com/defyance/ There are 5 songs online that didn't make it into the album (I think 3 of them are REALLY good -- although the quality of the recording isn't...), and sound clips of all the songs on the album. It's only $11 (which includes shipping), so it's a really good deal. If you're looking for something cool, this is it. (hmmm, wonder if the band should pay me for marketing? *grin*) ANyway, hope you enjoy it. :) Chris

Hello. I've sampled the 'jam for two weeks now. Only two or three months ago did I buy I&W. Two months later, Awake. Trying to find unused copies of WD&DU (with full liner notes). Might purchase A Caress of Steel (Sorry, A Change Of Seasons). I'm a big fan of TooL, Queensryche, Monster Magnet, Rush & Victor, Our Lady Peace (find Naveed, then find Clumsy. Two Great Albums!!!), Primussucks/Sausage/Laundry, Alice In Chains, Jesus Jones (New Album arrives by July, called "Already" as in "(Here's The Damn Album) Already!), and finally Tears For Fears. Anyway, my definition of Progressive rock is a simple definition: Music that takes whatever the standard form of Rock and Roll (Verse/Chorus/Verse) and metaphorically expands the essence to evolve (or shall we say to Progress) the structure from the norm. This may mean challenging lyrics, or technical time changes,(for example, DT, Rush, Queensryche, or those four fellows from Liverpool known as "The Beatles"), or it could mean completely underproducing the physical recording process (for example, Guided By Voices). It could mean taking the musical instruments to the closet and replacing them with Turntables, or sound effects or whatever Trent, anybody who's ever been in KMFDM, or Atari Teenage Riot are doing currently. In truth, even though the lyrical content of most rap albums is not to my taste, the world of Rap evolved like the world of Rock AndRoll. Maybe Rap is also considered Progressive Rock by My Definition (and possibly Mr. Portnoy's).

Thank you for your time. By the way, whenever "Lines In The Sand" does come around, people will be very happy that the band exists and was allowed to release an album at any cost, regardless of the listener's opinion of the individual pieces. I know that Queensryche is considered by many to be a sucky One-Hit wonder. Some people may wonder why a record label wants a band like QR or DT on their roster of artists. Current opinion of HitNF won't help matters. I pre-ordered a copy in February, which has not been touched, while I also have a copy (with Booklet front cover signed by all five members) at school, which is my listening copy (the autographed booklet is safe at home). Nevermind what I plan to do with the unopened Cd, but I support the music anyway. Thanks again for your time. Benjamin "Sarcastro The Sardonic" Adler

I happen to like the groove. They "do" STP better than STP does STP :) If I wanted another Images & Words, I'd go out and buy another copy of it :) I'm looking for variety. The new disc appears that it will offer the most varied of sounds/grooves/whatevers from song to song.

So, consider yourself struck, I guess :)

    Hmmm....Now you got me thinking....

I'm going to go give this another bunch of listens, as I may have been a little too quick to draw the STP ||. But look at all the lovely flames that started :)

For the record, I wasn't implying anything good or bad, just saying it reminded me of another sound. I'll leave it to the professionals in the group make the judgements...

"Explored" is too kind a word, Mike. Try "beaten the fuck to death!"

    And to this, I respond:

WHY? I (and many others on this list, I bet) will be too busy listening to the new stuff and enjoying it. I guess some people always need something to bitch about.

The guys know it's been a long time. They've said they wish there was something they could do about it. Cut 'em some fucking slack, already. I could be wrong, but I think I speak for several on the list here when I say that we're tired of hearing people piss 'n moan about it. It changes nothing.

Sorry, but the negative vibe (there I go showing my age again :) on here is getting way outa' hand!! Skadz, you've shown quite a bit of tolerance, man. I applaud you!!!
