    Holy shit-

I went to my friend's room to visit and I disocvered that he had a Rush
bootleg (The Electric Ladyland sessions from 1974). He told me that he
wasn't much into Rush anymore and had been trying to sell it for awhile.
I told him that I was a big Rush fan and so he sold it to me for $5.
    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you two oughtta purchase Dare to Dream then. It's funny, I
think that live album of his attracted more listeners than any of his
studio albums. I love it and I really don't like live shit.

Dare to Dream is a rad one. So's In Celebration of Life. He's got a
new compilation coming out on the 15th I guess, so it might be better
to get than any of the above. I'll letcha know.

I thought i would post some of my ideas that I gave to this guy to the jam
in hopes of getting some feedback on my little theory....

One theory that just came to mean was the idea that progressive rock likes
to put contrasting images on the cover of their albums. For instance the boy
in the snow on ACOS and like the clock face on the moon. A glance at the
cover of awake would tell someone looking at it that the albums lyrics might
deal with the issues of world perception and self perception. possibly?
whereas the cover of ACOS portays the passage of time and its juxtaposition
(heh?). This is to tell the potential listener that the music inside deals
with issues. Progressive rock is in general issue oriented. thought
provocation. Whereas other music may stress the artist or in the case of
something like Radiohead: the bends, the cover is not about either the
artist or the issues but focuses more on the of the bizarre nature of the
group. It says "if you're looking for different its right here!". What is
alternative supposed to be anyways.. different; progressive rock.. thought
    provoking/issues; country... emotional/simple; classical... soothing;
    jazz..upbeat maybe?

whaddya think? am I all wet here? is this obvious to anyone else? There's
more but this is the general idea.

I have some awesome new DT material (and a HUGE thanks go out to
the provider) part of which will be on Darkest of Winters, and part of
which will be released thereafter for everyone. As far as I can tell, NONE
of it has been circulated in any form. It's pretty old and some predates
DT. I can't wait to see what you all think of this...

Oh yes, before I forget. Run, don't walk, to your local theater
and see Chasing Amy. Don't pass go, don't collect $200. I didn't even
laugh so hard for Nutty Professor, and that table scene was a
sidesplitter. The latest in the "Clerks" series is a winner... CA brings
us back Gwen the Slut (as a lesbian character), Brodieman (comic book
tracer...ah... inker), and has about ten appearances by past characters.
It was a riot! See it!

    Greetings,

Just a couple idle thoughts to add to the fire:

Queensryche's 'Get a Life' from HitnF: Definitely the most ragged on song
on the album and rightfully so... what in the heck is up with
that chorus? I gots an idear about it though... what if maybe
they actually repeated the chorus over and over for effect? You
know, the way a person who needs to get a life will just obsess
over something and refuse to let it go unless they are just
bludgeoned over the head repeatedly with a blunt object? (Or a
chorus that just refuses to die for that matter)... Hey Geoff:
you oughta get a _verse_. :)

SoundGarden: Damn, you wanna talk sell-outs, how about these guys?
Badmotorfinger and then Superunknown? What happened there?
Not to slag on them or anything since I like them personally,
but I am curious why no-one brings up the fact that they used
to be just incredibly heavy and then allofasudden turn
alternative. Jesus Christ Pose is possibly one of the greatest
headbanging tunes ever, and Spoonman just catches a helluva
groove on it. Love them or hate them, you at least have to give
the band a little bit of credit in the musical talent and
            originality department.

You know, I was just watching a bootleg of a Portnoy clinic (thanks
Fernando :), and Portnoy's rationale for having a double album is that the
music once again intertwines, and to only use half of the songs for an album
would make the listener miss parts of the story. He said something about
balance between the ballads, the prog anthems, and the ballz 'n chunk metal.
However, they keep talking about having the album out in Sep/Oct.
How is that possible if they haven't even started recording yet, especially
if they're doing a double CD?
Anyone ask them at a clinic if they've already recorded stuff for
the new album yet besides the demos?

Peace and love, and good happiness stuff, ~Vince

    Hi there folks in ytseland,

last night DT was playing here in munich and they were great!!! Setlist was exactly the same as for the Fix for '96 shows in december. The guys really seemed to enjoy themeselves, Mike and Derek were teasing each other all the time making faces.. John Petrucci and John Myung were jamming face to face for a few times - JM was even smiling. James LaBrie just had the perfect voice (_much_ better than in 95 for the Awake tour) and even he was in a great mood...

The audience was also really great - carefully listening to the new material, and ecstatically singing and cheering during the older stuff.

The only bad thing: Mike Portnoy hurt himself during Learning to live. Sources said he dislocated a finger of the right hand. According to his face and behaviour it must have hurt like hell... but he played Metropolis as an encore nevertheless. But at the end of the show he put his right hand immediately in a bucket full of ice.

I met a view of the guys from the mailing list, but didn't see Jason Breitweg or Thomas Pfaller (were you there?).

Hopefully enough DTC to justify the following: A big F*CK YOU to everyone who's trying to make the jam worse by senseless discussions about taste and other flamewars. You know who you are...

read you soon - jerry :--)

I went over to the jukebox and what do I see? DT's I&W!!! (You know you are on Long Island if you see DT in the Jukebox.) Well, That's when the fun began..

We played the entire album to a bar packed with alternative fans!!!

People looked at us singing along and shook thier heads.

It was a joyus occasion, until the cover band started...

I read on the Jornal da Tarde, that DT with Tipe O Negative, Manowar, Judas Priest, DIO, WhiteSnake and some others brazilians bands that is not confirmed, will play on the Monsters. I didn't like this others band, cuz I don't like the roots of Heavy Metal (like manowar), but certainly I'll be there. The gig will happen on august 30th (it's a saturday), probably on Estadio do Pacaembu, SP. This could mean a double album for Europe and Asia, and not North America. I know no more than the rest of you, but quite a few imports of my favorite bands have more than just bonus tracks, but bonus discs. For example, the Japanese version of Living Colour's Pride (greatest hits) comes with an extra friggin' CD! Also, my "Australasia" version of Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales came with a bonus live disc. So, this is a possibility.

Well,I just got back from Night Ranger show right now. Maybe there're guys out there don't know about their re-union,but I'll continue about this. This is their "Neverland" tour in Japan. Original 5 guys Night Ranger. The venue (Osaka Kouseinenkin Hall CAP.2,800) was almost sold out. But most of the audience wa mid or late 20s and 30s with their kids. Highly aged audience, don't you think that? The show started with the song "Neverland" off their latest album (released last month). Wow, they ran across stage! And did formation! Do you remember this? Swinging their guitars. etc..... Such things were reminded me of rock concert of 80s. Some kind of TIME SLIPPING. But 90% of the audience came there to remind them of their youth. he,he....... So there's few reaction from the audience to their new songs. Well,to tell the truth, their new songs ain't better than what they used to play. Some nice new songs are on their new album, that's true. But those songs can't be compared with the songs like "(You Can Still) Rock In America","Don't Tell Me You Love Me". The high-light were "High Enough" (Damn Yankees), "Let Him Run","(You Can Still) Rock In America" ,"Don't Tell Me You Love Me". I think what they are doing right now will NOT affect music scene, but there's some place for them to survive......

Speaking of 80s band, have you ever heard new Dokken? I think I ain't the only one who think their new one (titled "Shadow Life") sucks. Any comment?

    Hey Mike,

What about Fashionable's Male favorite butt pirate, Shannon? I read that Kevin Smith wrote the script especially for him. I know there are some pictures from the movie on the View Askew web page, but I don't want to spoil any surprises. I liked what Time magazine said about CA: "If you liked Sleepless in Seattle, you'll hate CA". As long as I don't have to drive an hour to Michigan to see it, like MST3K: The Movie, I won't employ the Jedi mind trick.

    Sincerely,

    G. Jack Thetgyi

I've always thought that the Rush song "Dog Years" sounds just like Soundgarden. If you are a Soundgarden hater and you like this song, then I don't know where you're coming from.
