I wouldn't call it totally futile. Clark seems a decent fellow. Not as
effective as locking one up in a dark room and making him listen to Ivory
Gate at maximum volume a few dozen times, though :)

Yeah there are some Dokken fans here...I think the new album is gonna be
awesome because George Lynch will actually have some input on the making
of the tracks. Let me know what ya think..in private mail please!!

How wrong you are. Who wrote "Mailman"? Matt Cameron. Who wrote
"Rhinosaur"? Matt Cameron. Who wrote "Fresh Tendrils"? Again, the
word Cameron comes to mind. (He did the lyrics too). "Applebite"?
Cameron. "Limo Wreck"? Cameron and Thayil.
Now, let's see. "Head Down". Ben Shepherd. "Half". The same guy. Most
of "Down On The Upside"? Shepherd. Probably my all time favorite
Soundgarden song "Zero Chance", classic like "Dusty", an extremely
well written song like "Switch Opens".. "An Unkind"... Neo-punk "Ty
Cobb" with a mandola and a mandolin.
Damn, I'm not even *getting* into pre-Superunknown era. Cameron's
masterpieces like "Somewhere" or Shepherd's "Slaves & Bulldozers"...
That was the real thing. I haven't memorized all those, though. I
could go on, you see. :-)
Too bad Thayil wrote the least, though. I've always enjoyed "Room A
Thousand Years Wide" and "Never The Machine Forever" (9/8 sounds
awesome).
To the guy who said Cornell sings outta key. (Probably Vince.) Listen
again. Cornell has probably one of the most powerful rock voices out
there. He's come a really long way since "Louder Than Love".
I'm glad they broke up, though. They couldn't have added anything to
"Down On The Upside". To me, it was a masterpiece, like R.E.M.'s
"Automatic For The People".
Really had to get it out, I'm not really in the mood for flaming
anybody. :-)

I personally like Soundgarden, and if you don't, then that's your
opinion. I like music because *I* like it, and I wouldn't praise the
separation of another band because I dislike them. I'm not some
egotistical bastard that thinks only good music is progressive. I like
DT, Queensryche, and the Rush songs from Counterparts, but that's all I've
heard that I like. I like metal, alternative, and progressive metal. If
you don't like a band, don't piss people off by making it a major positive
moment for you. If you don't like them, you shouldn't have any reaction
to it, unless you are forced to listen to it. I'm proud of what I like to
listen to, and don't care if your almighty attitudes think of me as
inferior because SoundGarden isn't as complex as you would like. Give it
a try if you haven't, because you might surprise yourself. I didn't
originally like the rest of I&W excluding Pull Me Under, but I realized I
liked it after listening more. Just don't go praising the demise of
something that you don't like. I don't care if you flame me.

You know I comlpetely forgot about Dokken for a while there... forgive
me!!! I thoroughly enjoyed their latest, "Dysfunctional", to great
extent... I'll be looking forward to their next! I also enjoy George
Lynch's soloing style... there was one solo in Dysfunctional that I love, I
think its track 6 - Shadows of Light... the one that sounds like a bunch of
gospel singers are humming in the beginning... yeah, I know damn well it's
a bunch of gospel singers... but nevertheless.... that solo rocks!! He
seems to be quite fond of artificial harmonics in the majority of his
solos... I like that alot when it's used creatively, like George does....
plus Don Dokken looks a bit like Bruce Dickinson, so there's another
positive aspect to Dokken... as if there weren't enough!!

Hi Folks,
just to add to the Fates Warning thread:
I have been listening to them for a long time, and I agree that the
more recent releases with Ray Alder are less accessible to most listeners.
But I also do not agree that his vocal style lacks coherency or melody. His
vocals do tend to go everywhere, and at first it feels kind of awkward. But,
especially after listening to the discs countless times, they seem to
completely flow with the music and 'click' as someone previously said. This
band definitely does take quite a bit of getting used to in that respect,
but I must say that now their music is some of the most enthralling of any
band. I also wish everyone could get as much out of it as I do, but I don't
think they will ever gain as much popularity as DT or others because most
people don't seem to ever find the 'groove' or are even willing to look for
it. All of us Fates nuts know what the masses are missing out on, but hey,
I'm gonna remain content as long as they keep making the music for me. And
from what I hear, APSoG is going to be right up our alley once again. And I
must respect them for making the 55 minute epic on the new album that they
wanted to do, without worrying about radio accessability. Who really wants
to listen to hours of garbage music just to wait for something cool like
Fates anyway? Thats what tape decks and CD players are for right? Geez, look
at that long stinkin ramblathon. Sorry to waste space, just wanted to get my
$2.99 in.

The other night, I'm up at 3:00am to catch a Dennis Miller show on Comedy
Central (pointless since they bleep every other word, but not dick;
they never bleeped dick...), when my drunk housemate stumbles in and says
look outside. It was snowing. The high temperature for that day was 72
degrees. I know exactly what you mean D-Man. But at least you have
Burlington. We have *gag* Newark...
On the QR tour thing, I'm actually curious as to whther HitNF
haters will be going. There are a lot of songs on that album, and the
band played all of PL last time. Do you guys fear a repeat of the new
album exposure? I like it so I'm not too worried. Just sitting back and
praying Geoff doesn't say "Hey, ya know Get a Life would come across

New INXS album comes out Tuesday. Any jammers want reviews? :)
Didn't think so...
I'm glad to see the "Gather Hebrews..." guy has a sense of humor.
I'm even happier to see he's thoroughly read the FAQ. You are now a

I've been hearing a new Dokken song on the radio, "I Feel." Pretty good
song, but it's very comparable to the whole Queensryche switch, which
definitely doesn't need any rehashing (by the way, I like "Sign of the
Times," which is the only one I've heard). It was written by current
members of Deep Purple, by the way, so it's probably not much of an
indication of how the rest of the album will sound, song-wise. They
definitely took the music and production to a more basic level (not to say
they were ever complicated, but you know what I mean).

really directly related to DT, but all have excellent musicianship.
Niacin
------
If you haven't gotten this album yet, do so now. Not heavy in the common
usage of the term, but great grooves. All instrumental (bass, drums, and
B3) and jazzy/bluesy. Mmmm...
"Sometimes God Hides"
---------------------
If you've been wondering what the California Guitar Trio, or Tony Levin,
Trey Gunn, King Crimson, Gitbox, Los Gauchos Alemanes and other Discipline
artists sound like, go get the sampler "Sometimes God Hides: The Young
Persons' Guide To Discipline" (the record label, not the method of
preventing self-abuse). 78 minutes, 23 songs, all for the whopping price of
$5.99--can't beat that.
Tuatara, "Breaking the Ethers"
------------------------------
Tablas, bullroarers, marimba, saxaphones, dulcimers, upright bass and tons
more. Excellent "worldbeat" ambient/acid jazz-type stuff w/ subtle,
infectious grooves. The band consists of Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees
drummer), Skerik (sax for Sadhappy and Critters Buggin--two more bands you
should run out and buy), Peter Buck (REM), and Justin Harwood (sadly, I'm
not aware of his other works--sorry). Don't let anyone call it "Peter
Buck's side project"--it's Martin's creation.

Train of thought:
Well, I'm clearly in the minority here, but I'm going to miss Soundgarden
quite a lot. I'd offer that "Slaves and Bulldozers" is the best song that
the whole Alternative movement has produced (though I can dredge up a couple
other candidates). And I'm not one of those people who's casually tossing
out that whole musical movement in one fell swoop....I'm talking about a
great song here. And they had a broader impact...before there WAS a word
"grunge" being bandied about as a descriptor of music, Soundgarden was in
there, creating legitimately heavy and aggressive music. I'm not sure
they're all that progressive...I know they sure as hell wouldn't have
identified themselves as such. But they're really the interesection of the
MC5 and King Crimson. They certainly wrote in odd times, used interesting
chord progressions, and had a high level of musicianship (Matt Cameron, in
particular).
(Changing gears) I still don't understand all this griping about Ray Alder,
either. I don't know if he's consistent in a live setting (I've only seen
Fates Warning once), but, awesome as James is, I was more impressed with
Alder live. He just had a tremendous amount of power to go with his range.
And I actually LIKE the melodies he puts together, especially on the last
coupla records which are, of course, more commercial than previous efforts.
But I've said all this before....

I'll agree that Fates Warning doesn't "groove" in most cases (though there
are some parts -- the end of Point of View, for example) -- but
unemotional? You are a lucky person in that you have never been depressed,
then. Fates simply IS the mood music when things go wrong in my life. :)

(there is only one-right?) will be at Bohagers on Tuesday May 20th.
Bphagers has benn getting a lot of national acts recently while
Hammerjacks has had absolutely no one.
Bohagers has had Matthew Sweet. They will have groups like They Might Be
Giants and Crack the Sky, and now Eric Johnson.
I could really envision DT playing at Bohagers...

Went back into my collection again and pulled out Queensryche's disc Empire
and re-discovered some songs. For a while, I only liked the radio songs but
I'm starting to love Hand On Heart and Best I Can. BIC reminds me a very
little bit of Revolution Calling. My fave off the disc now is The Thin Line.
Something struck me though...the guitar part in it sounds all too familiar
like I heard it somewhere else..the part after "I walk the thin line for
you, do what your told to do"... I'm thinking Savatage but I doubt it seeing
that I own every Savatage CD. It just struck me as odd. I also love the
ending of TTL....that was too cool. I know to some, this CD was a sellout
but I won't ever stop loving it or any Queensryche disc for that matter
(including Promised Land and HITNF). PL is actually my fave disc by them.
Enough from me.

OK, there will be an update sometime this weekend, encompassing the
following changes:
* Mike Bahr's explanation of "The Silent Man." Thanks to Brian Kirk for
sending it to me! Mike, if you have a problem with this, let me know, but
I assume you're cool with it.
* New mirror site in Australia. Thanks Spiff!
* An explanation of "Mercy Fuck," et al. - I think we need it.
* I'm still waiting for a volunteer to mirror the site in Holland.
Anyone?
If anyone has any more ideas, please let me know! I ought to get to this
Sunday afternoon.

About the pick thing:
I don't think that there's a pick on the market that can improve
your precision. Why? Because just as many sick pickers out there use
full size regular picks as the special little ones that "improve XxX".
I've seen DiMeola use Dunlop jazz III's, and I've seen him use Fender
Extra Heavy picks. I've seen Gilbert and Yngwie only use full size
regular shape picks. Ron Thal and MICHAEL.ANGELO. too. So I decided that
the best thing to do was analyze the picks that feel best for me.
I find that what DOES make a difference in your picking, is the
flexibility of the pick. It's much less effective to play with a thin
pick than with a heavy pick, because the material flops around too much.
Metal picks seem to be TOO solid. I found that the thick purple dunlop
tortex and delrins got chewed up by my strings too fast (and I pick
parallel, not at an angle, so picks should last a while). I found two
picks that worked perfectly for me... Pickboy heavy picks, and Fender
Extra Heavy picks, in the normal pick shape. I hav since decided on all
Extra Heavy picks, because they're so readily available. Since choosing
one brand of pick, I think my playing has steadily improved, since I've
eliminated a variable.
The moral: Don't choose a pick because Petrucci uses it, or
because Friedman uses it (Friedman's are a little thinker than mediums).
Spend a whole $3 and get a bunch of different picks, and find out what
matches your style. No one can see your pick when you're playing... so
don't choose because "This pick has a cool bleeding skull with a horned
goat's ass pupping out of the eye!".

That was very insightful. I hadn't looked at it that way. When I
first listened to Fates, I just thought they were cool cuz they did guitar
harmonies, like Iron Maiden (I was young). One day, though, it really
clicked. I was hooked from then on. Since that point, no band has been
able to climb above FW on my favorite band list.
I understand Marillion is like this too... so I am not gonna sell
