This has a lot more info on the Rush reissues and since there are KI$$
fans here (whether they admit it or not ;) ) I thought I'd keep that

Hey guys, long time since my last post. I was kind of bored today and
decided to decipher some DT lyrics instead of analyze their music which is
what I like to do (I play the geetar so it kind of goes together). I found
something which I found quite amusing... look at the "thank you's" on the
inner side of the liner notes (not the side with the wide pict. of the band in
the studio) and you'll see DT thanking Heaven's Gate. Just thought it was
something funny and for all you flamers out there... yes, I know, Heaven's
    Gate is also a band.

Just for the record, it's not on at the same time everywhere, tho'. Here in
the Pittsburgh area (Morgantown doesn't warrant its own TV station) it runs
at something like 2am, after a couple of those stupid Jerry Springer type
talk shows (and Nightline, of course), so you may want to check your local
listings, as they say, to see exactly when it's on in your area.

Just thought y'all'd like to know.

I just got the new Daedalus (echolyn) newsletter and Brett Kull explains why
Tom and Chris left. They were tired of getting dicked by the label. They
finished all the "As the World" songs and were waiting for it to be released
by Sony. Also, soon after they finished the songs, Tom and Chris were
changing in their musical interests. Brett reminices the days when they
would be locked in the studio and finish a song and be excited about it.
Those inspiring days are over now that Tom and Chris left. I don't think
that Chris Buzby was the driving force of the band; I think the all band
members had a chemistry that made echolyn what it was. Just by reading the
Gardener's Guide to As the World, you could see that there hearts were
really into making great music. "The Meaning and the Moment" has to be my
all time favorite song. That song and "Velveteen Rabbit" has put tears into
my eyes. (sorry for the sob story)

The rest of the band is releasing Still very soon, but I have a feeling this
    won't be remotely echolyn.

Peter Renfro was trying to get them to play ProgDay '96, but I think he
couldn't get through the band. He also was trying to get DT to play, but
didn't have time to get the contact info. Peter says he would love to have
them come. Thanks to my lobbying efforts and D-man's help, the might be
coming to this year's festival. Just wishful thinking for now. I'm trying
to egg on Peter to at least get a prog-metal band to play this year.

As for Savatage, they only played hometown (Tampa, FL) twice after DWD, and
went straight for Japan. That should indicate the success the have in the
    states.

    Walter.

    9/8 by definition means:
    9 beats per measure
    8th note gets one beat

while three groups of three (like a swing 3/4)is the most common, it is not the
only subdivision of 9/8. Another very common subdivision is 4/4 + 1/8. I have
seen this not only in prog, but in classical music as well. A good example is
the intro to Voices. Even 4/4 doesn't have to be counted as four even groups. In
latin music it is commonly divided into two groups of three 8th notes and a
group of two 8th notes. Flamenco music is often in two groups of three 8th notes
followed by three groups of two 8th notes. This can by counted in 6/8, 3/4, or
by alternating the two. I'm rambling now so I'll stop. The part in question can
be counted either way, use whatever works best for you, but Petrucci's
transciption of it isn't wrong (even though a lot of stuff in that book is :) he
just counts it differently than you.

It's been a particularly stressful week for me, being that one of my
co-workers is on vacation and I'm picking up the slack and I got into a huge
fight with someone I wish was my girlfriend. Gee, fat chance of that
    happening now...

So I've reached my breaking point. I stop by the local music store and find
an Ibanez JPM100 P2 in the original, "primary colors" color scheme. I knew
I had to do it... I apply for financing and get
    approved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bank may own it, but I still get to play it. :)

Okay, back to playing my new JPM100. Damn, that feels good to say - "*My*
    new JPM100."

According to Chris, that's not the whole story. I forget precisely why
Tom left, but Chris left because the other three were changing their
musical directions, and Chris didn't want to change. Basically, one of
the guys played Chris a grunge song he had written, under the pretense of
it becoming an echolyn song. Chris said, "That's not what echolyn is,"
    and left after some discussion.

    > I don't think

Oh, be careful about that one. I've had the chance now to hear Chris
(with Finneus Gauge, live) and the other three (as echolyn, but really as
Still, on the Tull tribute). Chris *was* echolyn, plain and simple. FG's
music (though not the lyrics) is almost like As The World II. Still, on
the other hand, has become a guitar band, almost veering off into that
grey area labeled with the g word. Not that that's bad - I happen to like
some grun - er, some of that music, but what Still is sure as shit isn't
what echolyn was. FG is *far* closer to what echolyn was.

    > The rest of the band is releasing Still very soon, but I have a feeling this

    *BZZZZZZZZZZZT* Try again!

No... BV was on volume three. That's part of why I bought it.

In the latest Entertainment weekly, it says that sales is below
expectations for Nine Lives: it sold under 140,000 copies its first week,
well below the 300,000-plus first-week figures for the new U2 and Live.
Also, I think the Notorious B.I'G.'s album (I know it's not rock) was the
highest selling new album the week HitNF came out, so it wouldn't have
been as easy to debut back in the days of Empire or Promised Land.

The remastered version will be cooler. Digitially enhanced green is even
    better ;)

This was my first exposure to the band, and I listened to it 6 or 7 times
in a row that night, about 4 years ago. I had never liked music that heavy
until I heard these boys play. I hated "Night of the Stormrider" the first
time I heard it, because I was expecting more of the first album. Later it
became an all time fave. I think that it isn't a band's change in style
that upsets us, but rather we come to expect a certain sound and don't
always get it. **** Still haven't heard their latest two.
