Well, Ozzfest is over in June, so if Deth and Pantera are supposed to
tour together, they still can for the summer.

Well, DMB does have their jazz influences, but not really. That's funny
you say that, being that the two are touring together this summer.

MD/QR is impossible, the QR tour starts before MD's album comes out. And if any of DT's
members saw the flame war that began with the idea of a DT/MD tour, I don't think they'd
chance losing all those dedicated fans. :P Besides, that Ratlhead guy would throw a
fit! :) Either of those combos would be killer though. I'd personally like to see
Megadeth and Saigon Kick (gee, wonder why? :P). But Dave, please: NO KORN!!!

Imagine, if you will, an Erotomania video with Alicia in it. Perhaps it's a way to get the listener to hang in there for a song that's over 3 minutes :)

    :)

I heard a rumor that Korg is coming out with a new line of reproductive organs. The web site doesn't mention the name of the organs, but a few come to mind...

    And speaking of organs:

    > Yeah, her and Rod Stewart. Another Urban Myth. (Although, my friend works in > a studio in L.A. and says Rod used to draw penises on the studio walls.)

I rememebr, in an old National Lampoon, an ad for a Rod concert. The mic he was, uh, holding - practically in his mouth - was shaped like Mr. Happy and had quite a leak...

Headliner: Dream Theater Opening Act: Enchant Date: April 11, 1997 Venue: Babylon -> Muenchen, Germany Attendance: 1500 (this is what I was told the capacity was at least, and the thing was sold out!)

    Review by Jason Breitweg (breitweg@amzeus.desy.de)

So after a good nights sleep after the Nuernberg show (except for those damn loud pigeons) we headed for the next DT show in Muenchen. Muenchen (otherwise known as Munich) is pretty cool. Nice pedestrian area with cool shops and many America fast food places. We were right at home *laugh*.

After getting a little bored with drinking vast amounts of beer and eating sausages I thought we should head over to the Babylon where the show was tonight. After dragging Doug away from his beer we made our way there.

Though it is called the Babylon is has Star Trek pictures painted on the outside of it. When we arrived (about 2 hours early) there were only 5 people there. So tonight it looked like we were going to be in the front row after all!

We saw some of the guys from Enchant coming and going from the place. They said hi to us, recognizing us from the previous night. The 2 hours went slow because of the huge wind storm that had started. But I met some people from the Nuernberg show. Even a young lady from Japan! Now that is devotion!

So the doors opened at 6:30pm and we were let into the foyer. Enchant's sound check was still going on so they didn't let us into the hall yet. So we stood there chatting with a couple of women from Nuernberg.

At this point the beer caught up with Doug and he had to go to the bathroom. Of course at this point they let us into the hall. Forgetting about friendship and such I ran in and got a place on the front barrier half way between Derek and the center of the stage. Everyone had tried to crowd in in front of John but this one fine by me. And this was a great place to hold my Ytsejam banner up at.

Finally Doug came in and pushed his way up by me and also Keith showed up. So we were all set. Of course I had to give a few swift sharp elbows to the two bitches behind us that were trying to push me out of the way. Music came first tonight not those wannabe fans!

So Enchant hit the stage at 7pm. The set list was different from in Nuernberg. And they played a new song called "Blind sided" I think. It rocked! Man, I have to get one of their CDs! Again they only played 40 minutes but the crowd was still very enthuiastic. Of course I think we were cheering the most.

Then we had to wait about 20-30 minutes and then started "The Rooster" by Alice in Chains. Of course you know what this means. At this point I was going crazy. I think people just thought I like AiC or something *grin*.

The damn bitches were pushing on me some more. But no way there were moving me. I don't care if Derek would like to see them more than me *laugh*.

Right in front of me was a security guard but he didn't care if I held up my banner or anything. So I just had to choose my time right for the maximum effect!

The set list was the same as in Neurnberg:

ACOS 1 & 2 Mirror Lie Burning My Soul The Killing Hand Just Let Me Breathe Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden Peruvian Skies Pull Me Under Lines in the Sand Take Away My Pain ACOS 4 Ytsejam Learning To Live ACOS 6

    Enore: Metropolis I

Lets see...what were some of the highlights. After Lie James was kind of walking near where I was and getting ready for the next tune. So at this point I held up the Ytsejam banner. James sees it and gets a smile on his face and says "cool, let me see that". So I hand it up to him. I think at this point time kind of slowed down for me *grin*.

James kinds of spreads the banner out to take a look for himself. Getting the nod of approval he holds it up for the whole crowd to see *grin*! Hey I got some applause from the crowd. At this point Mike remarks "Hey, from the back it says Majesty!". James then procedes to try and hang the banner on the drum set but the thing wouldn't stay put (in Bonn we shall get some tape!). So he threw it back to me and they went into "Burning My Soul".

During this song I was singing the whole thing. Don't ask me how I knew the song so well *evil grin*. After the song Mike points down at me and mouths the sentence "How do you know the words? You were singing them all.". I just gave him my innocent grin and a little shrug *chuckle*. Nice to see that he is watching the crowd.

The rst of the show up to "Learning to Live" went great. Near the end of LtL I glanced at Mike and saw that he only had one drum stick in his hand. And he proceded to bang his right hand against one of his toms. I thought that he might have a cramp or something. Then he picked up another stick and started to play.

He was in obvious pain at this point and threw his sticks in the air and said. "Fuck it, I can't play" and walked behind Derek's racks. Well the rest of the band kept playing although it is damn hard without Mike to keep the time. So for about 40 seconds we had the no drum version of LtL. All the while Mike was walking back and forth rubbing his right hand.

Finally he comes back on and just plays bass drums for a bit. To keep everyone in time. Then he grabs two sticks and continues playing. Even with the look of intense pain on his face they finished the song.

Of course Derek fucked up on the ending again. Missing the whole part where he was supposed to play. He just gave an "I sorry guys" look to JP before they went right into ACOS. During ACOS JP looks up at Mike and Mike says "I can't play anymore". But the show must go on.

After ACOS James goes to slap Mike's hand (what the hell was he thinking). And Mike pulls back his right hand and gives him a high five with his left.

Then they actually came back and did Metro. I was quite suprised at this considering the obvious pain Mike was in. When they came out after Metro to take their bows Mike had his hand in a bucket of ice (of course the bucket had the Jagermeister logo on it *grin*).

All in all a great show. Same instruments as I described for the Nuernberg show. And the same merchandise.

I saw some of the guys from Enchant outside afterwards. And went to the DT bus but someone told me there weren't going to come out because of the long ride to Milan. Plus I knew Mike would be hurting so I didn't want to bug them. So we left and hung out in some bars until we took the train back to Hamburg.

I guess I will just have to bring the banner to Bonn for the last show. I must get them to sign it. I have a spot on the wall ready for it now *grin*.

Last night I saw a TV ad for the movie soundtrack to "The Saint". The ad kept flashing the names of the bands who appear on the soundtrack, and 2/3 of the way through, I saw SUPERIOR flash on the screen. Is this Bernd's band? If it is, congratulations for getting on a movie soundtrack. If not, tough luck - and don't try to play in the states under that name.

    Yup!

    > Now, a question: Are we speaking of length? Of number of distinct musical parts? > How complex those parts are? How many stylistic switches one makes? I'd argue > that all of those go into a meaningful definition of progressive,

Certainly there are *parts* of a song which can be progressive, without the whole song necessarily being so. And still not take the progressiveness of it. A part that comes to mind is in "La Villa Strangiato." Not sure of the time index, but somewhere towards the end, Neil is going nuts on the bass and snare and Geddy is doing a run which modulates.

I don't think a certain quantity of the above is needed. I refer, again, back to that brilliant example: ACoS. Try playing the acoustic intro part during the section "I remember a time" or during the part right before where JP is on electric. Rhythmically, it's fairly straghtforward to make it fit like a glove. You can see the how the melody line has, for lack of a better word, progressed from one section to the next when set against the original line.

    > But I also did have a somewhat well-known knock-down drag-out on the old a.m.p > with a few folks who were arguing both that Rush isn't progressive and that Rush > isn't any good, anyhow, so who gives a shit?

That and they tend to lean a little more towards the jazz side of fusion, but the musicianship is first rate. Check out the song "Access to Data" (can't remember the album, perhaps Is There Anything About? or Masques).

Anyone else remember the day when whatshisname (was it hairball?) cut his hair off and there was a great many posts mourning his loss of locks.
