    Headliner: Dream Theater
    Opening Act: Enchant
    Date: April 10, 1997
    Venue: Forum -> Nuernberg, Germany
Attendance: 1500 (this is what I was told the capacity was at least,
and the thing was sold out!)

    Review by Jason Breitweg (breitweg@amzeus.desy.de)

My friend Doug and I took the 5 hour train ride down from Hamburg (in
the north of Germany) to Nuernberg (deep behind enemy lines in the
south *grin*). No sight of other crazy DT fans on the train. I was
tempted to hang up this big banner I made in our little train
compartment but I don't think that the old lady we shared it with
would have liked in. So the train ride was uneventful except for the
conductor yelling at me for having my feet on the seat (something
about this not being my house *laugh*).

Nuernberg is kind of a cool town. We had some good food (bratwurst
and BEER) and saw a cool castle and the old wall that used to surround
to city. Just makes you realise how damn old things are here!

We showed up at the Forum at about 6:30pm. As we were walking up to
the place there was a little crowd of young Germans. I wasn't sure
what they were doing. Upon a closer look they were surrounding Derek
    who was giving autographs.

So I pushed my way in an stood beside Derek. People asked him various
questions. Like "how many new songs are you going to play tonight?".
Derek replied "5 new ones" and I resisted listing off the names of the
songs *evil grin*. Or how about "Are you going to play Pull Me
Under?". Duh...I almost had to bust out laughing but once again
restrained myself. There were a couple more obvious questions but you
    get the idea.

Then I had Derek sign my "A Change of Seasons" liner notes. I told
him we came all the way from America (just a slight lie). He didn't
seem impressed. I guess it was because we weren't hot chicks *evil
grin*. Then he almost stole my pen before he left, but I got it back
    and then he left.

We then procceded to the front of the Forum. The doors weren't open
yet or anything. So we stood near the box office so I could get my
reserved tickets. And then I started to look for people with Ytsejam
shirts (and hoping some people would see mine).

I met about 5 people from the Jam. Steffen from the German fan club.
And those four crazy dudes from Poland (they had a 13 hour drive!).
Also a talked to a guy (didn't get his name) that was taking pictures
at the show for the fan club. And of course we also ran into some
Americans (they are everywhere you know *grin*).

Well the doors to the place opened before the box office so we didn't
get in until about a third of the people were in. There went our
hopes of being in the front row! Looks like the banner would go to
waste tonight since they wouldn't be able to see it with me standing
    in the back.

Enchant came on stage at 8pm. Very good musicians. They could be a
little heavier for my taste though. They only played 4 somes but it
still added up to 40 minutes *grin*. The crowd really didn't know
them but they still got a good response. My personal favorite was the
song "Oasis". I will have to pick up some of thier discs soon.

Then we had to wait about 20-30 minutes and then started "The Rooster"
by Alice in Chains. Of course you know what this means. At this
point I was going crazy. I think people just thought I like AiC or
    something *grin*.

When DT hit the stage it was pure magic! Everyone looked in great
shape and were playing their hearts out. Pretty much a flawless
performance I thought. No troubles by James on "Take Away My Pain".
But I think Derek did screw up a bit on "Learning to Live". He always
fucks up this one last part, you would think he would practice it more
*grin*. Of course who am I to talk.

    The set went like this:

    ACOS 1 & 2
    Mirror
    Lie
    Burning My Soul
    The Killing Hand
    Just Let Me Breathe
Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden
    Peruvian Skies
    Pull Me Under
    Lines in the Sand
    Take Away My Pain
    ACOS 4
    Ytsejam
    Learning To Live
    ACOS 6

    Enore: Metropolis I

All the songs were done just like in America on the Fix for `96 tour.
Basically lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes. The new songs rock each time
I hear them. Was I the only one singing along the new stuff *grin*?

James mentioned numerous times that they are going into the studio
once they finish this little tour of Europe. NO mention of a double
CD! I also thought James' voice was dead on for everything! Not like
somes of the times I have seen them. This time no cracking or
    anything. Sheer perfection.

JP was playing the white and black 7 string and the dark bluish 6
    string.

Portnoy had his TAMA kit which was brown fading into white. A bit
different than in America where I thought it was purple fading into
    white *shrug*.

Myung had his black 6 string bass.

Derek had 3 Korg keyboards. One a silverish color and the other with
a wooden cabinet (gets that good organ sound I guess *chuckle*).

The t-shirts were of the same design as the ones in America in
December. Just had different dates and on the front said Europe `97.
And the dark blue hat had been replaced by a bright blue one (nasty
    color if you ask me).

After the show we talked with the guys from Enchant for a while. You
could tell they were quite happy touring with DT. Their keyboarder
told me not only do they get to play in front of a lot of people but
they get to go to a DT concert each night *grin*.

Turns out that Portnoy is the one that got them the gig. He had met
them in California some time ago.

After this tour with DT they will join up on the Threshold tour in
Germany. Here they will get to play a 1.5 hour set. I can't wait for
    that tour to hit Hamburg.

Well we wanted to meet DT but they showed no signs of coming out of
their bus right away and we needed to catch a train. So we just hit
the road. We needed to get some sleep before we headed to Munich for
the second show on the tour. The banner would come in handy on that
    night. Stay tuned for details......

Boy, was my spring break timed perfectly. I was able to catch the
Nuremberg and Munich shows with Jason and Doug, and was at the Melkweg
last night. All the shows were great, each better than the previous
one. Thank God for ear plugs, or else I would be deaf, but this isn't a
    review.

    > Hrm. We've got a verification of the double album now, BUT what if
    > James was meaining the coming EP as the double thing?

No, no verification. I might have been too busy being the first one to
cheer when James said they were going back into the studio when they got
back to the States, but I heard nothing about a double album. And when
i talked to Mike after the show last night, he said they weren't going to
use all 2:30 of material they had, which just happens to fit perfectly on
two albums, leading me to believe it's just one album.

Other stuff: Mike's favorite boot is Lost in the Sky, fyi. JM said they
are looking at Kevin ____ as producer for the album. I thought I had it
locked away, but it slipped out. I think the last name began with an 'S'
though. This might be common knowledge, but i didn't see anthing when i
scanned the 1500 messages sitting in my inbox today about that topic. On
the forthcoming boots of the Nuremberg and Munich shows, if you listen
carefully (I don't think i was as loud as the guy in Bombay Vindaloo)
you'll here a single cheer when James mentions the band getting into the
studio before the rest of the audience joins in. That's me!! just for
    the record.

Thanks to everyone for the info about Local H- I'll be buying the CD as soon
as I get some money. Does anyone know anything about a band called Kilgore
Sludge? I'm getting the CD through Columbia House and am taking a risk
because I never heard of them before. Oh, yeah, Silent Lucidity review:

    Queensryche- Silent Lucidity (Metal Memory)

The first 5 songs off this are from MTV Unplugged. The first song (I Will
Remember) skips from a defect...luckily, thats the only one that does. Della
Brown makes for a much better acoustic version than album version while I
think the total opposite of Silent Lucidity. The Lady Wore Black has to be
one of the best songs on this disc. The next 8 tracks are live in Amsterdam
and the sound is not nearly what I expected. The sound quality would
probably get a B+ for these and I'm being nice about it while the Unplugged
songs would get an A with the exception of track 1. The live set starts off
with Anarchy X/Revolution Calling. Some of the highlights include Jet City
Woman (with decent sound), The Thin Line (although, only the keyboards part
came out crystal clear), and Empire. I wish Best I Can would have had better
sound because I do love that song but it just absolutely sucked on this
disc. Other songs on the disc The Killing Words (acoustic), Walk IN The
Shadows, Resistance and a song Geoff says they never played live before
(Roads To Madness). Okay, sorry about the garbage review--its the best I
    could do.

By the way, does anyone have info on a QR bootleg called Road To Promised
    Land??? Thanks much

Guess everyone here is quite familiar with the band on a more personal
level than I. Hello there jammers. I'm new to the listserv, and yes, I'm
scared. But, I'm sure I'll live. I'm afraid I don't have the access to
all the wondrous DT memorabilia that yall have. I only have WDADU, I&W,
Awake, & ACOS ep. Whew..abbreviations....anyways..for having all these
albums, you'd figure I am a big fan right? Well after reading a few
messages from here, I realize that I don't nearly have half of the DT stuff
that I thought that existed. Did that make sense? Guh, college drains the
    brain. :>

Their reviews make bad comparisons, so I don't generally trust it. Last

Kansas as the ad in HM claimed it sounded like.

I'd like to ask how they sounded? Can anyone give a detailed description

On a side note, I find it odd that some jammers think I will actually get

    Hello,
So Mr. LaRue, ya wanna know about the PL tour. Well aside from
the simple fact that it RULED!!!!!!! (#3 on my all time list) The songs
    went as follows:
all of PL, with full band Someone Else as encore #2
            Empire
            Jet City Woman
            Silent Lucidity (closed show)
            Eyes of a Stranger
            Real World
            I Don't Belive in Love
Spreading the Disease (??? not sure on this one)
            Revolution Calling
            Anarchy X
Take Hold The Flame (encore #1)
            Three other pre-Mindcrime songs

And that's what I can remember of the 2 hr 40 min show from two years
ago. I didn't have The Warning, EP, or Rage at the time, but I did know
Take Hold anyway. Those other three songs are a mystery. I was surprised
they played Real World, pleasantly so.
I think, however, the reason they played all of PL was because
it is a concept album of sorts. I think they won't play all of HitNF,
but probably at least 8-9 of the 14 songs, and spOOl is almost a
definite as I hear its Geoff's favorite on the album. Sign of the Times
is too because you have to play the single (though I've seen VH defy
    this truth TWICE).
            All right buddy:

    >Sorry, last december, when I was up there for the Birch Hill show, was
    >the first time this Atlanta boy had ever been up there and seen the
    >pitiful driving conditions you naaaaaaaaaatherners have to go through.

Though I know fully you're joking, one thing must be said: I am not from
New Jersey. I live there not by choice, but because its where the job is
(for now). And New Jersey people are not northerners. They are a
separate breed. Northerners are from New England and upstate New York. I
refuse to have my people (from Massachusetts, Vermont) lumped in with
    New Jersey people.
And the driving is only that bad in Jersey. Any state north of
New York is perfectly normal to drive in. Those silly left turns are
called "jughandles" and were created by Satan himself to punish Jersey
people for dumping all that toxic waste everywhere and creating homes
    for the Mafia.
Oh, and last time I was in Georgia (a month ago), I drove past a
store that had a sign reading "Dead People's Things For Sale." You
should not be criticizing the goings on of other states, my friend. :-)
            On Local H:
    > They have been opening for STP for the last couple of months.

Can anyone confirm for me that Cheap Trick will be playing with STP this
summer? I've heard it, but seen no confirmation. Apparently they've been
    demoted to opening act status...:P

    >I was just wondering something: If you can't dub the tapes for Pat, why

AAAARRRGGGHHHH!!! My eyes!!! They're burning from the sockets!!! I'm
blinded for life!!! In more certain terms, this is a question you
really shouldn't be asking, fella. :)

    Hi all!

I have a question for anyone to answer (e-mail directly to me) and then a
    reminder you EVERYONE.

    1) I want to know what are some other good Galactic Cowboy releases. I
got "Space in your face", and think it's great. Then I ordered "Feel the
Rage" (I think) from BMG, and I think it sucks compared to SIYF. If I'm
correct, then Feel the Rage is the short CD, with a couple live tracks as
well. Any suggestions for other GOOD GC CDs?

    2) A REMINDER TO ALL ON THE JAM: I still need more e-mails of top-ten
favorite CDs of all time. Just pick out your favorite CDs among your
collection, ranking them in order of 1 being your all-time favorite to 10
being your 10th all-time favorite. Eventually, I will compile EVERYONE's
lists and post them on my home page: http://rossby.ou.edu/~jcase
(I'll give you the exact address once it's all finished. Nothing
relating to the top ten list is up on my home page yet).

    Anyway, e-mail me at: jcase@rossby.ou.edu
with your top ten favorite CDs of all time.

I think I have 22 or 23 responses so far. Not bad!

    effect.

My thanks to all of you who made offers in the last few days!

You Brazilians deserve a bunch of DT shows! How many thousands of
    Brazilians are on that petition??

    > Adrian Legg as Special Guest! Only ... who's that? Anyone knows?
He's a super-excellent acoustic guitarist who likes to play with his
tuning knobs. :) Don't miss him!
Speaking of missing him, he played in Philadelphia friday - the same
day as Nuno. Doh! (Nuno smoked!)

    > Fucking, New Jersey? Is that like Flushing, New York?
Maybe you were thinking of Intercourse, Pennsylvania?

    > Also, other than Ozzy and Black Sabbath does anyone know who is
    > playing in the ozz-fest?
Type O Negative, Pantera, Machine Head, Fear Factory and at least
a half dozen others that i never heard of.

    Hello,
Okay someone needs a sense of humor:

    >Na, it's a mailing list for Dream Theater fans...for Dream Theater fans
    >to talk about whatever the fuck they want. Not whatever you want.

Good, then I can say fuck you! heheh... Hey friend, Ptacek was joking
(though I'm pretty sure he doesn't like No Doubt, can't blame him). Geez,
I think this guy Itchak is more bitter than I am! :-) But in truth
jammers are not allowed to talk about certain things. I would mention
them, but the signup note says I might get expelled if I do...:-)

    >I'd rather hear about some jammers' diverse musical tastes.

"I like coffee, I like tea, I like my Sanka, and it likes me. A cup, a
cup, a cup... Sanka and me!"

And Pat Griffin, you are a piss, in the good way. :-) Those
people are just looking to win the most frequent poster awards. heheh...
To the jammer looking for those G3 dates, they have to wait for
EJ to finish his spring tour, and I heard Vai was doing some dates too.
If I hear anything, I'll post, but you should keep an eye on the
TicketBastard website. Another nugget of info is that the G3 live album
is the very first time that Steve has let ANYONE mix his solo material.
    He's so understanding...:-)

G3 without Johnson plays Ahoy, Rotterdam, Netherlands, May 23rd (voorverkoop
started last Saturday so it might be too late already). Adrian Legg is an
acoustic guitar player, unaccompanied last time I saw him (which was supporting
Satch on the "Extremist" tour). He incorporated rapid tuning and detuning in
his songs. Quite interesting to behold.
