I couldn't even read it because when Juno condensed it and sent
it to me it just looked like a bunch of astriks (sp). If someone
could explain what it was I would appreciate it.

Your friend is right! Zappa was an original.
Now what I want to know is A) How good is his stuff?
It depends on what your tastes are. Zappa has albums of *all*
different styles.
B) Is it progressive?
Not all of it, but some of it is.
C) What is the best CD to start out with?
I would say to introduce Zappa's music I would start with "Strictly
Commercial." There's lots of great stuff there, but this is a good
start.

When I was on irc there was a guy on there who was in a band called
Metropolis which was a DT tribute band. I would argue the same thing.
A band with only three full length albums out doesn't seem like it would
qualify for a tribute band. But if their wasn't a market for it then
there
wouldn't be a tribute band in the first place.

YES!
It's *finally* here! Tonight and tomorrow I get to see one of the
great guitar players alive (I haven't seen DT live yet) when Prince,
yes you read me right, Prince plays at the San Jose State Events
Center. For those of you who know his music (and I know you're
out there) know he is truly one of the great musicians and songwriters
around. For those of you that are into the whole "image" thing then
there's nothing to say. But those of you that truly know great music
when you hear it know how great this shows gonna be.
Now I'll go into lurk mode and watch how many of you come up with
the most popular arguement on the jam. You know the one where
someone says they like a band and then someone chimes in with
the proverbial "they suck!"

Ok, thank you D-man. I seem to have mispoke again. As my
girlfriend will tell you, I have a nasty habit of doing that. Anyway, I
agree with you bands like Rush and Zepplin, blah, blah, blah do deserve
tribute bands. They are important figures in the history of rock music and
many people do idolize them. My point was that artists like Alanis Morisette
don't really deserve or need tribute bands. At this point in her career
it's hard to tell whether or not she's going to be anything more than a
trend. For any band to make a lasting impression on me or have a big
influence on my life they have to have a lot more to impress me with than
just one album.

PRINCE ROCKS!
thats not sarcasm. he's one of the most talented and ingenius guys out
there to listen to and watch. and if you really want to go and rip on this

Mm. I'd say 80% of the bands on there I'd never heard of, and I pride
myself on wide musical tastes.
Anybody else got some ideas for our fave prog bands?
Here's a couple I thought of:
DT chicken: Steps out into the road; is making some progress when it is
nearly run over by the Grunge Movement semi. Undaunted, the chicken keeps
moving relentlessly forward. The other side of the road is in sight when
the chicken suddenly runs up against a barrier labeled "Record Company".
The chicken tries its hardest to get through but gets nowhere. Frustrated,
it flaps around for a bit, returning periodically to the barrier to try again.
QR chicken: Slinks across the road unnoticed for a while. Spotlights
suddenly appear, trained on the chicken. It puffs itself up, unaccustomed
to all the attention, and begins to make real progress forward. It emits a
raw-sounding squawk, and suddenly hordes of screaming people appear,
shouting that "that isn't the way the QR chicken is supposed to sound!"
Chastened, the chicken retreats to the middle of the road, looking confused
and in search of a direction.
Jason Luscher remarked:
>One quick note, does anyone else think that it's morally wrong
>for a band that is still in existence to have a tribute band. "Jagged
>Little Pill"?, come-on folks! She's only had ONE freakin' album in the

>OWN MATERIAL FOLKS! - Jason, original song writer
So cover bands like 2112 (Rush), Strutter (Kiss), the Van Halen tribute
band, and A1A (Jimmy Buffett) are morally wrong? Rush, Kiss, VH, Jimmy
Buffett and several others I can think of offhand are still going strong;
what's wrong with somebody performing tributes to them?
I do think it's a bit ridiculous to create tribute bands to somebody when
they've only released an album or two, though. In my mind, such a band (or
artist) hasn't really proven they're worthy of tribute yet. :)
Michael Lafser then inquired:
>can someone answer this question without being
>a smart ass?
*Beavis voice* Uhh....no.
>if so, what makes something progressive rock as opposed to metal or
>alternative or whatever
>if you ask me i think dreamtheater and queensryche are two very different
>bands and they are both progressive (or so im told)
>someone please clarify for me
Hey, D-Man, is this in the FAQ yet? :)
Cheers,
Phil

Hi there!
I just returned from the show in Bonn. Some random highlights:
-The last song of Enchant's set was a cover version of Alice in Chains'
"Would?". On the drums: Mike Portnoy!
-In return, the singer of Enchant helped out during CIA9ITG.
-There's a new band in town and they can kick DT's ass! They're called
"Nightmare Cinema". Here's the lineup: Vocals: JLB; Keys: JM; Drums: JP;
Bass: MP; Guitar: DS. This awesome 'band' played "Perfect Strangers" and
words like 'hilarious' don't even begin to describe this perfomance!
Unbelievable!
There were tons of other cool stuff happening (MP got a cake with the Majesty
symbol for his birthday, they played a little bit of U2's "Discotheque" etc.
etc.), but I'm a bit tired and hungry right now, so I'll just say that this
was the fifth DT concert that I've been to and I've never seen them this good
before. They really seemed to have the time of their lives.
Two personal lowpoints:
-At the beginning of the show I was in the fourth row or so, but during "Lie"
the only thing I could think was "Just let me breathe" (which had nothing to
do with the song), so I wussed out and ended up somewhere in the middle of
the hall where I couldn't see everything, so who knows what I've missed...
-After the show all the merchandising was sold out. I want one of those green
shirts and one of those blue hats, dammit! I think it should be possible to
order that stuff via the Fan Club! Neil?
Oh yeah, I saw one guy taping the show, so if anybody gets a copy PLEASE
contact me...
Nightmare Cinema rulz!

Oh, and once again: Happy Birthday, Mike!

Consider yourself lucky. Someone please explain this to me. I go to
the Ticketmaster friday morning at 9:00 am. Rush tickets for June 10th
in Cincinatti go on sale at 10:00 am and there's a 15 minute block for
states OUTSIDE of OH, IN, and KY (I live in KY) so I figure I'm set,
right? Wrong. The lady's got me punched up into the computer before
tickets even go on sale. Something pops up on the screen and she goes
"wow!" Sections 100, 200, and 300 were ALREADY SOLD OUT. What the fat
is up with that? Did the freakin' radio stations get 'em or what? Does
anybody know how this shit works cause it really pisses me off. I'll
never get non-general admission tickets again (I've seen DT, FW, and
King's X twice all for ten bucks or less).

Is Zappa progressive? Well yes and no. Just put it this way... Zappa is a
composer... his main love is really writing music for orchestra. He started
playing rock because he knew he could make a living that way ( Don't think
he didn't like rock; he just preffered the orchestral stuff) He conducted
his 'band' like an orchestra ; wrote out all the parts, in didn't
necessarily play all the time. All I can say is that the guy did it all.
Simple R&B stuff, straightforward Rock, Fusion-jazz0type-of-stuff, and all
covered by his satirical (and critical) humor. A lot of his music is very
complex and could be categorized as progressive, but that depends what you
consider to be 'progressive'; diff. people have diff. opinions about that.
What CD to start out with? I'd recommend You Are What You IS... it's pretty
easy to get into and has a lot of cool arrangements ( not to mention the
Theme to Sinister Footwear :) )
A biased opinion from Ernie: a Zappa fan
and IMO yes, DT should record 'Resurrection of Ernie' again...just because
of the title
