As a huge fan of both of the aforementioned bands, I can empathize, but I
choose to differ. Pinnick, Tabor, and Tate are some of my favorite
vocalists, hands down. I'm glad you stated "In [your] opinion", because I
think both bands are geniuses. I get goosebumps when I listen to "Out of
Mind" _and_ "Dream In My Life".

Damn straight. Doug really pours his out into his performances, both
vocally and bass-wise. And Jerry is just nuts on the kit.

I remember the first time I saw the "Over My Head" video on Headbanger's
Ball (R.I.P.), and I couldn't figure out what all the buzz/hype was about.
Then I saw the "Summerland" video, and I was hooked instantly. BTW, who
picked up the inverse Hamer from that video?

Both bands are still ahead of their time. I love HITNF, and any
"regression doubts" by skeptics will be clearly washed away during the
summer tour.

I like the way QR uses their three-part harmonies. The guitars are much
more rawer on HITNF because they plugged out of their racks and straight
into amps. I still prefer an Empire-era drum sound, but overall, I think
the production is killer.

Someone wondered what school Kevin was going to. Well I talked to him about
it awhile ago and he is going to film school. The point he told me was to
help in making video, but espeically in the multimedia aspect. I figured
(and only figured I may be wrong) that he meant doing stuff to this music CD
i.e. popping them in your computer and cool things would happen. Anyway,
just thought it was interesting. Take the time.

That's right! That announcement is done by their label owner himself. And what he says are "Catch copy","Band Name" and "Album Title" in Japanese.

Well, I listened to the Symphony X samples on the web-page that somebody posted. I must admit that the guitarist has some pretty serious chops, and overall the music sounded pretty good. But I was wondering if someone that has their stuff could tell me if what I heard throughout all three of the song clips is to be expected in the majority of their tunes:
The rhythm section just _REALLY_ needs to get a clue. All three tracks I heard, the bass guitar was pulling down the bottom end with one pitch at a time that was played at breakneck speed... and the drummer was pretty much stuck on one or two 'fast' rhythms to go along with it.
I liked the tracks, I really did, but the drummer and bassist sound like they need to learn how to support the rest of the band instead of just doing their little thing throughout the song whether it's called for or not. That's the thing about DT: they know when to let it loose and when to hold back. Johnny Myung can play a serious groove when he needs to, or he can just hang loose and add a little bottom end to a song here or there. And Mike Portnoy does the same thing... he cuts loose when he needs to, but he knows when to back off and not ruin a song.
Anyway, just my initial thoughts based on the three sound clips... I did like the vocalist of DWoT a little better than the other guy, and I'll probably end up picking up that album at some point, but I hope that what I get is something with a little more variety and subtlety instead of a straight-forward in-your-face shredfest with a constant bassline and boring drums.

Listen, it shouldn't matter what a band looks like. Hell, I didn't even know what DT looked like when I first heard em, and I didn't care. And I didn't stop liking Metallica because of their image (maybe I didn't LIKE it), but because I didn't like the music. That's all that should matter. If DT want to crop their locks, paint their bodies, or stab their skin (as long as they don't get a Prince Albert), I say go for it.

sure but you dont count as one of the musically ignorant general public (or maybe you do but DT is a trend where you are or something:) regardless, it is all that should matter, but its not all that matters, because the music world is an entertainment industry and bands who are striving to make it in america like DT is need to be aware of marketing and being acceptable yet remaining true to their roots to the general public. i think a lot of people *did* say "FUCK METALLICA!!" when they cut their hair, because a lot of people view the bands and their traits (even what their guitars look like, video production, etc) as a whole. Not everyone is a musician, and many listen to be entertained. I'm even succeptable to this, even though i'm a musician. i'm certainly not going to listen to a guy who writes incredibly talented music if he's this incredibly nasty guy who masturbates onstage or something. i think DT *should* be conscious of their image if they want to appeal to the public, which i know they do. maybe in the process they'll appeal to people who dont appreciate the music fully, but in the process of gaining a fan base like that they're going to be heard by people who *will* appreciate it that wouldnt hear it otherwise. having a few trendy DT posers is a small price to pay for getting their music across to a wider variety of people, and saying you dont want them to go and get famous is just selfishness. i know a lot of people who like having "their own personal band" that no one has heard about, but when they get famous (and i did not equate that with changing their style, lets hypothetically say its the same style as before), they say "oh well fuck them, they sold out" as far as i see it maybe they were just selling out listening to them before.

Hi all, I was just curious if any of you had heard of a band called Defiance. As far as I know they have three albums and haven't recorded in a while. They were never really on a major label and I don't even know if they are still together. All I know is that I heard one of their albums through a friend of mine and I thought was the most mind-blowing thing I've ever heard. They are basically really fast, progressive thrash. They have two amazing guitarists and the drummer is one of the best I've ever heard. The vocals aren't too hot, but oh well. If anybody has any info about the current status of the band, opinions, or where I could find a copy of their album I would appreciate hearing about it.
One quick note, does anyone else think that it's morally wrong for a band that is still in existence to have a tribute band. "Jagged Little Pill"?, come-on folks! She's only had ONE freakin' album in the US. The same goes for "Itchy Fish" (Pearl Jam tribute band) and the numerous Alice in Chains tribute bands that I've heard about. These guys are pretty good. Their second CD ("welcome to the moonlight circus") is better than the first one "Diary of a blind angel." The singer is not bad, it's just that he's hard to understand. He should just sing in Italian instead of english.

Well, hi, but this exactly what I won't! I'll explain: Each and every time I buy a T-shirt, I wear it during the show, making it really sweatty. Then the next day, I'm still flying on those tiny white clouds, with the amusing white sound ringing in my head, wearing the same T-shirt, with PRIDE! Ok, I wash it, wear it some other time, then You all know what happens, at least those of you of 25+ with a job, this T-shirt is for Football-practice! Forever! And those $20 are in some way wasted.
What I'd like is a Dream_Theater WOOLSEY, with a smaller DT-logo on the chest. That would be something to wear in public, at parties, during dinners and you name it, and it would still be something to be proud of! Besides it wouldn't go out of style that fast. Of course it might get more expensive, but far more used, I'd say.=20
I saw the white T-shirts of Awake, with the little blue logo, and I liked those, even though it still was a T-shirt. But something like that would be perfect. What do you say, guys out there? Is this something you'd like to wear, and to be proud of, even when you've quitted school?
Hopefully this will be read by DT-management and then they'll have the first one seld! If they don't dare, I'd be happy to buy it from any virtual dealer! Have any of you seen anything like that from any band? I haven't, and think it would suit DT to be the first (def progression.)

This morning, I had a radio show to myself since my DJ was out of town. Dream Theater was the artist of the week (the DJ highlights one artist every week.) There were probably no listeners, but, just in case someone wants to hear (part of) besides me, it's on tape and available for dubbing. I violated at least two of the Digital Man's rules, partially due to time constraints and having to play rotation songs. Is it wrong to pay tribute to a band that's still in existence? No. "Power Windows," the Rush tribute band, is one of the best bands I've seen, period. (Besides, how else would you be able to see things like "Camera Eye" live for five bucks?) VH tribute bands, and stuff like that, are the same thing. Paying tribute to musicians that have shaped your musical life. That's what it's about.
An Alanis "tribute" band, however, is not (I would hope!) paying tribute to a lasting influence, but rather turning a quick buck. There *is* a difference.
