    Hey Guys,

After all this talk, I decided to borrow my roomate's No Doubt CD so I'd
have a basis for judgement on the band. In short, IMHO, No Doubt's
musicality is nothing spectacular and seems to benefit more from great
production than great musicianship. This stuff is about as progressive as
Cyndi Lauper. To her credit Gwen Stefani has a very cool, albeit gimmicky,
vocal style...and I'd be a liar if I said I wouldn't want to date her.
Mmmm...a girlfriend that could sit in with my band.

To the guy who challenged someone to transcribe "Don't Speak," if you
really want the chords so desparately, then I'd be glad to transcribe it
for you. It's actually pretty basic ballad fare. It might be because I play
a lot of jazz, but the chords really aren't that weird at all. No Doubt's
biggest strength is that they're doing something different. But this isn't
the stuff of musical revolution like Guitar Magazine's sell-out columnist
Pete Brown wrote. Uh...Pete, weren't you hailing NIN as the "next big
thing" just a couple years ago.

Sorry for the NDTC guys. Also, this post is all IMHO, so keep that in mind.
They're a catchy band...they're just not my style.

    Greetings, Jam.

I went to a local record shop that my friend runs (he's not into prog) to see if they had a promo for APSoG... they didn't. They did, however, have a copy of Mike Keneally & Beer For Dolphins "Half Alive in Hollywood", a double album that was recorded half in the studio at MI, live (they were being guinea pigs for T.J. Helmerich's recording class), and half live on stage at MI a year later. Have you heard Mike Keneally? If you have seen G3, heard the band Z, or own any of Dweezil Zappa's albums, you probably have heard him. He has two other albums out (Hat, and Boil That Dust Speck). I have been a fan since Hat, and realized that I'd been appreciating his playing for years before that on other recordings. Mike Keneally is not a "shredder", but his music is technical and complex as hell. You WILL tie your fingers in knots as you play this stuff, if you try to learn it (he does play fast somewhat frequently, but it's not scalar or major/minor triad arpeggio based, as most shred is). He does sound a bit sloppy when he plays, but I think this is partially intentional. This double album (Half Alive) is incredibly progressive (NOT METAL, by ANY STRETCH of the imagination), fitting in along the lines of Frank Zappa, while more modern and technically capable. Brian Beller plays bass, and smashes on it. Totally great bass playing. Toss Panos (quickly becoming one of my favorite drummers) is an enormous talent on the drums... this could be his best recorded work. It will be hard for even Fates Warning or Dream Theater to make an album that I'll like more than this. If you have an open mind towards music, and want to experience some amazing experimental musicianship, you need this album. It won't cost you more than like $16 for a double album. **Disclaimer** If you judge music by "how fast can the guitarist play?" or by heavy chunking riffs, rather than sound, creativity, and uniqueness, don't bother buying this album. You have to truly have an open mind to dig Keneally and his bunch. While it is probably the most technical music I've heard in months (more so than DT, if you ask me), there are people on this list, who believe that only metal has talent. Take care!

IWINIWINIWIN!!!! :) I love the dinette set, but I would've been happy with just the year's supply of Rice-a-Roni :) In retrospect, Adam, I'm glad you didn't decide to put "Absolutely Free" in there, 'cause then I would have felt like a dummy.

On a DT note, I think I've got a new favorite moment, but I guess it's more like a memory until the new album comes out. Remember the lyric near the end of "Take Away My Pain" when the band drops out out? James says "...on the edge of the bed/Staring at the paper through the tears..." and then John does the little pre-bend-and-release thingie. That is the closest I have ever heard an electric guitar come to sounding like it's crying. I sure hope that particular part is similar on the album, because...it's perfect :)

    Hey guys,

I want to buy a couple shirts and stuff from the Fix merchandise page at rsabbs... however, I, like so many others, will not do so without being able to see the stuff first. Now I have a question or six:

Does anyone have a picture of themselves wearing fix merchandise? Would any Fix-stuff owners be willing to take a picture of their stuff (wearing it, or just lay it out on the floor)? I hav a color scannerm, and would be more than happy to scan any such pictures so people could see this stuff, and decide whether or not to buy it. Write me personally to let me know if you can help out. Thanks!!!

Is it just me, or do both the new Dokken an Queensryche sound more like you would expect Kings X or Saigon Kick to sound. Not that it is necessarily a bad thing. It just leaves me slightly in mourning for the sounds that I grew to love over the years. I must say that I am extremely happy to see Jeff Pilsons vocals recorded. In case anyone is interested, Rockabilia has a DT color poster flag of the Awake cover for $11. A DT button for $1. And a patch of the flaming heart for $3.50. The patches are on order and will be a couple of weeks. I ordered yesterday, and shipping was $7 for a credit card order.

Also, I gave Neil Elliot an email because the fix for '96 shirt that I ordered hasn't come yet. It has been over a month. Anyways, they are switching to the Euro shirts for whatever reason. That is the cause of the delay

This bothers me a lot, and not just because I'm not a fan of Ms. Morrissette's music. I've seen Pearl Jam and STP tribute bands too, and they have been around since the band's first or second album? What kind of a *tribute* can you do when the band hasn't even released enough material to do a full-length concert?

The reason I go to see bands like Diver Down (Roth-era VH) and Battery (Metallica) is to see performances of old material that the artists themselves rarely play. Diver Down in particular is great - it's as close as you're going to get to seeing Roth with VH in 1997. Battery is more of a cover band than a tribute, but it's still cool to be able to hear the full version of MOP in a live setting.

But really, how can any band tie themselves down to being a "tribute" to Alanis when it'll be 10 years before it can even be determined if she will earn the notoriety?

I say we try to flash back to the mid-80's and try to become the first "tribute" band to Dexy's Midnight Runners!

    Hi,

I haven't heard anyhting about a new album either. There was a rumored new album by Roger Waters, but it turned out to be a hoax. There have been alot of rumors about a tour next year, or in the year 2000, but none of them have been confirmed as either true or false. The newest pink Floyd related thing that you can get is the new Richard Wright album, Broken China, which is pretty interesting..Sorry I don't have more information...I am dying for a Floyd tour myself, so if you hear anything new about it, be sure to tell me!

take care, and sorry about the non-Dream Theater post....

    how do you know that?

I can't remember the last time I saw a video on MTV, but I digress... :)

    >its dedicated fans that boost the real bands up, not some stupid cheesy >video crap >why the hell would someone want JP to look like Kurt Cobain?

OK, here's where you lose me. I've seen several post like this that state that appearance/image doesn't matter, but in the same post, the person implies that they would be disappointed/upset if DT changed their image. Well, if image doesn't matter, then why would you be upset?

If DT comes out on their next tour and the lights go up and James has a shaved head painted half white and half blue, and JP's head is painted white, and Derek's is painted blue (Tool reference - for the uninitiated :)), will that make them better? Worse? Different in any way at all, musically? Of course not - because IMAGE DOESN'T MATTER. Don't you listen to the damn Sprite commercials?

Thefirst time I heard DT, I had no ideaa what they looked like. I just knew I liked the music. I *still* have no idea what the guys in Tool look like (other than the description above, which I read in a review), but Aenima is hands down the best CD I bought in 1996.

In summary: Music is not visual, it's aural. The only image that matters is auditory.

I'm pretty sure this was due to ignorance of the manufacturer. this recording was made long after When Dream and Day Unite was released. i'm curious though, as Kiss the Stone (makers of this boot) list the title as Status Seeker on their web page if i'm not mistaken. i dont own the boot, so i dont have too much more to add.. but if your friend wants to sell his copy..... ;)
