Review:
Treasure Land:Questions
[Noise/T&T] 1997
It seems that Noise Records is somewhat changing the criteria based on which
they sign their new bands. It may be because of the fact that there's not
much those melodic speed metal bands around anymore, but I'm delighted to see
that the recent Noise releases have been pretty complex and progressive metal.
The Swedish quintet Treasure Land is one of these new Noise discoveries and
their material, once you get over the initial shock, is very refreshing. Now,
if a jazz combo starts to play metal, the result may be Dream Theater. But if
a metal band decides to go jazz, the result may very well be something like
Treasure Land.
The overall sound of Treasure Land is very much alike that of their
countrymen Heads or Tales, so the obvious Dream Theater influences are
audible, but TL is way more diverse than any other Swedish stuff than I've
heard recently. TL uses a lot of crunchy, even a bit thrashy powerchords,
but I can't help but mention that Treasure Land's music includes a healthy
dose of adventurousness and is full of surprises. There are Latin polyrhythms,
melodic speed metal in the best Helloween/Gamma Ray/Stratovarius tradition
and the sort of laid-back jazz you could hear on a car ferry's lounge bar,
all in one song. These guys get VERY jazzy from time to time. And for not to
forget any possible listeners, there's even a few seconds of your average
death metal growling on this cd as well.
It's very hard to find any distinct style in TL's songs so reviewing this disc
isn't the easiest thing in the world. At the first spin I didn't get anything
from this cd, but this stuff grows on you, it's better every time you listen
to it. Axeman Jonas H|rnqvist is obviously musically educated, the way he
manages to shine both in power metal and in lounge jazz proves that. Despite
it's diversity and maybe even weirdness, Treasure Land's playing is very
"balls-and-chunky" in toto. For some reason, their power metal reminds me of
an another Swedish band, Memento Mori.
The only really big problem I have this cd is the lack of a decent vocalist.
Zenny Gram is at his best in the piano ballad "To Live Again", but when it
comes to singing progressive metal, Gram's range is way too narrow, he sings
all the high-pitched parts either in falsetto or they come out as irritating
King Diamond-style shrieks. Moreover, Gram's voice doesn't resonate at all,
most of the singing sounds like rhythmic talking.
When TL decides what's the way they want to sound and the vocalist learns to
master his instrument even decently, we will hear a lot of great things from
Treasure Land.

Hey guys. I'm looking into buying another Blind Guardian album and I'd
like some suggestions. I've heard "Imaginations from the Other Side",
"Somewhere Far Beyond" and "Battalions of Fear". I like them all but
would like to get something that sounds along the same lines as
"Imaginations..." (One KICK ASS album!). If you can recommend an album
to me by these guys, please do. (Specifically, what do "Follow the
blind", "Tales from the Twilight World" and "The Forgotten Tales" sound
like?) Finally, I'm not interested in any live or acoustic releases.
Thanks for any help and please send all replies to glyde@scc.net.
Send to the list too if you feel people want to read about them.
Also, if you know the current exchange rate of Deutch Marks to Dollars,
please also let me know. Thanks again!
(Do NOT send to the address I'm sending this from. It's the work
computer. ;)

Hi, everybody
I've just got back from the JP-clinic in Go:teborg yesterday.
It was really amazing, and I order all of you who has a chance to see it to
do so. I'll give you some short comments, and maybe get back for more later
on ( this day is going to be a long and tough one, in my job, i can assure
you...)
He started with Purple Rain
gave some guitar-warming-up technics
played Burning my soul ( all w/ band, wo/ song)
Speak to me ( and the speaker took fire!)
that intersection of Metropolis, they made on Europe-Fix'es
Hollow Years
some intros and licks
Lines In the sand
+ more guitar-tecnincs
and closed it with the two SEGA-themes
Later He signed my X-mas CD with a great smiley Oohps! in his face. I asked
about DEREK and the blond (!) , and he replied that he'd better come over
here then.
He also told us about the CD-release, but that's old news.
I think that was more or less it, Jan.Melander of WM-Data will fill in the
blanks, with the same accuracy as when he conceived my entrance ticket.
So JUST GO SEE IT !!!
.. and, well, thanks a lot to IBANEZ, and Club DOJAN

Greetings ye 'jamanoids...
Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 23:33:48 -0500 Randall Braun tells us:
>>And now on the use of the Gustav Holst Mars riff at the beginning of DWT >>(the epic piece on the CD). Yes I still think it's there; It's quite >>distinct. And the 'tage song that uses the same riff is 'Prelude to >>Madness' on HMK.
Jeff Keifling then remarked:
>That 'tage Riff is a classical song by composer Greig, (died in 1908 or >something). "Hall of the Mountain King" is the name of it, but 'tage >renamed it and gave the subsequent song this title.
Close. Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) was invited by Henrik Ibsen to write the incidental music for his folk drama, "Peer Gynt." Though the music for "Peer Gynt" has 22 separate musical numbers, the two suites Grieg created for concert hall performances are the most familiar ones. "In the Hall of the Mountain King" is part 4 of the first suite, which also includes the commonly heard "Anitra's Dance" and "Morning Mood."
As to whether the riff matches "In the Hall of the Mountain King" or not: I can't say, 'cause I don't have any 'tage stuff. Yet. I'll pick some up someday, soon as I get enough cash back together...gotta stop going on these mad "prog-buying" jags....
New Fates tomorrow! (Technically, today, since it's 4 AM). I know I'll be out searching for it. Not that anybody around here's heard of it, but then again, it's not like I care what they think. :)
Cheers, Phil
